I: Frontis, XII-1 h., 330 p., 6 láms.

The Koran Commonly called The Alcoran of Mohammed,

London: by C. Ackers for J. Wilcox,, 1734. Translated into English immediately from the Original Arabic; with Explanatory Notes, taken from the most approved Commentators. To which is prefixed A Preliminary Discourse. By George Sale. Quarto (248 × 190 mm). Contemporary calf rebacked to style, red morocco label, red speckled edges. Folding map, 4 diagrams of which 3 are folding. Binding rubbed, wear to corners, very short closed tear to map at stub, a few faint spots but contents generally quite clean and fresh. An excellent copy. First edition of the second and most authoritative English version of the Koran. Although a solicitor by profession, George Sale (c.1696–1736) was a leading orientalist, having acted as corrector to the SPCK's Arabic translation of the New Testament (1727). His translation is prefixed by a long "preliminary discourse", a compendium of all that was known about the religion of Islam, itself separately translated into and published in several languages. The 1734 edition was the only one that was published during his lifetime, but the translation was reprinted in 1746, 1764 and many times afterward, most recently in 1984. Sale was textually indebted to the 1698 Latin translation of Ludovico Marracci, confessor to Pope Innocent XI, but unlike Marracci, Sale was convinced of the sincerity of Muhammad's intentions, though he remained eager to secure the conversion of the Muslims to Protestant Christianity. Sale's presumed partiality to Islam earned him the criticism of his orthodox contemporaries, and probably led to a breach with the SPCK, but scholars like Gibbon (whose treatment of Arabian history and Islam in his Decline and Fall relies heavily on Sale), Voltaire, and Lessing valued him highly. In 1921 Edward Denison Ross claimed that Sale's version had not yet been superseded, and more than fifty years later Sale's objectivity still guarded him from criticism in Edward Said's Orientalism (1978).

This copy with Philip Carteret's armorial bookplate to the front pastedown, and his ownership inscription to the title page. Carteret was surely one of the most notable Jerseymen of the eighteenth century. He was on the Dolphin for Byron's circumnavigation, and accompanied Wallis's expedition to discover the great southern continent as commander of the Swallow, a sixth rate sloop of fourteen guns. Separated from the main party in the Dolphin, Carteret carried out a voyage of exploration in the Pacific making a number of important discoveries including Pitcairn Island, New Ireland and St. George's Channel. "Carteret was left with his health ruined and with scant reward from the Admiralty, in marked contrast to their treatment of Byron and his crew. Lacking effective patronage and having turned the Admiralty against him by his complaints about Swallow and by importuning them on his return for a new ship, he was left on half pay". He gave his journal to Hawkesworth for publication as part of An Account of the Voyages undertaken by Byron, Wallis, Carteret and Cook (1773), but was so outraged by the editor's "many ill-judged changes" that he prepared his own version for the press, which was not to be published until the Hakluyt Society's edition of 1965. Carteret's subsequent reputation was "marred by the fact that Hawkesworth's mangled version of his journal was the only account available, and particularly by the fact that his achievements were so soon eclipsed by the triumphs of Cook. Though he died disappointed and embittered, his contributions to Pacific geography were notable and a fitting testimony to his powers of observation and his courage". A nice association copy.

The Koran, commonly called the Alcoran of Mohammed.

London, Charles Ackers for John Wilcox, 1734.. Large 4to (25 x 19.5 cm). With title-page in red and black, and 5 engraved plates: a large folding map of the Arabian peninsula (with an inset view of the "Temple at Mecca"), a folding plan and view of the "Temple at Mecca" and 3 family trees (2 folding). "IX" [= XIII], [3], 187, [1 blank], 508, [15]. [1 blank] pp. Contemporary blind-tooled calf, sewn on 5 cords, each board in a panel design with the inner and outer areas darker than that inbetween, blind-tooled board edges, red sprinkled edges, later gold-tooled red morocco label.. First edition of the first English Quran to be translated directly from the Arabic: a landmark not only in efforts to bring an accurate version of the Quran to the English-speaking world, but also in Western Quranic studies in general. It also includes Sale's 7-page note to the reader, with criticisms of earlier translations into English and other languages, his 187-page preliminary discourse bringing together a wealth of information about Islamic culture, and valuable scholarly footnotes, including material from the Islamic commentaries of al-Baydawi and al-Suyuti. Holt notes his "enlightened and objective attitude" in sharp contrast with most Western Arabists of his day or earlier: "His freedom from religious prejudice , his obvious conviction that Arabic writers were the best source of Arab history, and Muslim commentators the fittest to expound the Quran, marks an enormous advance ". In addition to Arabic sources, Sale consulted the best Latin translation of the Quran, by Ludovico Marracci, published in 1698. Wynkyn de Worde had published a tiny piece of the Quran in English ca. 1519, but the first real Quran in English appeared in 1649, translated from Andre du Ryer's French translation of 1647. The French version already had serious faults and they grew worse in the English translation, so this version was never highly regarded by serious scholars. It long remained the only English Quran available, however, and further editions of it appeared in 1688 and 1719. George Sale (1697-1736), son of a London merchant, studied law at Inner Temple in London, but chose to work (intermittently) as a solicitor rather than a barrister. He originally took an interest in Arabic as a member of the Society for Promoting Christian Knowledge in London and helped prepare their Arabic New Testament of 1726. He became one of England's leading orientalists, and though he certainly hoped to convert people from Islam to Christianity he nevertheless viewed Islam sympathetically. He thought Mohammed did a service in bringing some form of monotheism to pagans. In fact contemporaries criticized him for presenting Islam too favourably, though Voltaire and Thomas Jefferson read his translation eagerly. Sale's English translation was also translated into German, French and Russian, and appeared in numerous further English editions from 1764 until after World War II. It remains highly regarded today. The book was well printed by the leading London printer Charles Ackers, with Arabic words transliterated in the Latin alphabet using various accents. The 4-page dedication to John Carteret, the future Earl Granville, is a nice example of the use in London of the remarkably modern Double Pica (21 point) roman (with a few words of italic) that Peter de Walpergen cut for John Fell of the University Press at Oxford in 1682. Originally exclusively for the use of the University, these types illicitly found their way into the London trade around 1706. The dedication was added at the last minute as a separate bifolium and is not included in the pagination. - With engraved armorial bookplate of "Rev. Richard Congreve" (with motto "Esse quam viderel"), possibly the Reverend Richard Congreve (1714-1782). Slightly browned throughout, last leaves with marginal water stain, hinges cracked, but most sewing supports intact. A good copy of a groundbreaking English translation of the Quran. - ESTC T146975. Fück, Die Arabischen Studien, p. 104. P.M. Holt, Studies in the history of the Near East (1973), pp. 57-60. McKenzie & Ross (eds.), A ledger of Charles Ackers, p. 41. Schnurrer, p. 429.

Duodecimo, title page slightly damaged at inner margin; a few stains but a good copy in old quarter calf. First edition of this allegorical satire on French society, an orientalist fantasy with Malabar princesses and many of the usual props including sultans and harems. Its author is believed to have been de Longue, an obscure writer who does not make an appearance in Nouvelle Biographie Générale, but it has also been attributed variously to the abbé Lenglet Dufresnoy, and to one Quesnel, who is mentioned in the preface, and who died in the Bastille. This is an odd book, its most curious feature the use of the anagram. Most of the satire remains allegorical (rather than directed at individuals or institutions): thus for example there are critiques of 'Raison' and 'Religion,' but they become 'Rasoni' and 'Roligine.' The subterfuge may seem redundant when the satire is of a concept, but anyway these rather blatant anagrams are explained in a key at the end of the book. Nonetheless, this enigmatic style did not save the book from the fire: its allegorical satire on French society together with its alleged atheism, meant that it was condemned to be burnt by an arrêt du Parlement in 1734, which adds to its rarity.

Voyages et Avantures de Jacques Massé

Cologne: Jaques Kainkus, c., 1734. Duodecimo, frontispiece, title-page printed in black and red; contemporary sprinkled calf, spine gilt in compartments; bookplate and armorial gilt stamp on front board of F. Lachêvre. Third edition. A handsome copy of the third edition (Rosenberg edition 'C'), with frontispiece portrait of Massé and title-page vignette of Mercury. Friederich comments that the importance of mining and irrigation to the Australians makes it the only work 'to foreshadow what has actually come to pass in modern Australia'. Tyssot de Patot was a well-known Huguenot free-thinker, whose writings were a continual source of scandal: Voltaire thought that he had 'carried the torch of discord into their homeland'. Certainly the antagonistically anti-religious stance of this novel created much ill-feeling. Atkinson comments that because 'open criticism of the Bible is so frequent' he will have to content himself with listing just a few of the more extreme examples. Massé shipwrecks on the Southern continent at '44 South latitude, almost at the point where Kerguelen Island will be found to be on modern maps' (Atkinson). Whilst most of the survivors of the wreck are content to maintain a large presence on the coast, Massé and his friend Moret travel inland where they settle in an enormous and well-organised utopia, 'a plentiful, fruitful country, a land of blessing and peace … where human blood is sacred and safe from the rage and tyranny of great men'. They become so enamoured of their Australian hosts that they abjure their faith and their European heritage, and it is only when Moret is betrayed by his liaison with a treacherous queen that they reluctantly flee, escaping rather fortuitously by a subterranean river which deposits them close by the original settlement. They remain besieged in the camp for another twelve years before they are finally picked up by a Portuguese ship. Rosenberg argues for a date of around 1734 for this edition, to coincide with the renewed interest in Tyssot's work at the time (he cites 1733 English and 1737 German editions). His theory is that this renewal of interest 'arose because it was confused with Mandeville's Fable of the Bees which, by 1730, had achieved considerable notoriety'.

An Essay on Man. In Epistles to a Friend

      J. Wilford, 1733 -, London 1734 - Four volumes in one, small folio; a few upper margins cut close touching one or two page numerals; a good set in crushed red-brown morocco gilt by Morrell. Pope's great poem. A beautifully bound edition of one of the greatest long poems in the English language. Second edition of the first part, the others first editions. An Essay on Man is one of the best known poems by the poet and satirist Pope. It was widely read on publication, and occasioned a response from Voltaire, La Loi Naturelle of 1756. Pope was very attached to the work, and crushed by some of the negative responses it engendered, in particular its demolition by a Swiss professor, Jean-Pierre de Crousaz. Not until the 1735 publication of his Works did Pope firmly claim authorship of the work, commenting: 'If I could flatter myself that this Essay has any merit, it is in steering betwixt the extremes of doctrines seemingly opposite, in passing over terms utterly unintelligible, and in forming a temperate yet not inconsistent, and a short yet not imperfect system of Ethics'.         Kort beskrifning, om eld- och luft-machin, wid Dannemora grufwor dedicerad til respective herrar interessenterne, utaf samma importanta wärck.

Sthlm, B. G. Schneider, 1734. 4:o. (8),52 s. & 1 stor utvikbar grav. plansch. Frihetstidens optimistiska utilitarism personifieras i Mårten Triewald (1691-1747).

Editio sexta Tomus pmrimus (... secundus). Folio. (I) Titelblatt mit Vignette in Rot-Schwarz-Druck, (20), 974 (61)S.; (II) Titelblatt,1180,(64)S. 2 zeitgenössische, ausgebesserte Lederbände.. Vgl.
