Amsterdam by Wetsten, Smith and Waesberg 1734 - Albert Seba (1665-1736). Copperplate engraving with original hand color from Locupletissimi Rerum Naturalium Thesauri. Published in Amsterdam by Wetsten, Smith and Waesberg, 1734-1755. Paper size: 14"x20 3/4" Condition: Deckeled edge at bottom. Albert Seba’s magnificent “Thesauri” is a catalogue of his personal natural history collection, an immense conglomeration of specimens of a number of exotic plant and animal life. The son of a Frisian peasant who became rich in the service of the Dutch East India Company, Seba was an apothecary practicing in Amsterdam when he began to collect. His scientific interests and curiosity motivated him to amass this collection on a series of travels to the East and West Indies, and from purchases he made of specimens collected by travelers the world over. Many of the snakes, plants, fish and shells illustrated and described in his “Thesauri” were based on the specimens Seba collected in this “cabinet of curiosities.” In fact, many of the extravagant designs of the engravings were copies of the arrangements of the specimens in the drawers of his cabinet and the walls upon which he hung his collection, which in this way became a sort of predecessor of the modern museum. The collection was a valuable source to European natural historians, many of whom would not have had the opportunity to travel to the far flung destinations where the specimens originated. It is documented, for example, that Carolus Linneas visited the collection when he was in Amsterdam. These fine engravings made Seba’s unparalleled collection accessible to a much wider spectrum of enthusiasts, and modern viewers, too, can appreciate the stylized compositions and near-abstract quality of their fanciful compositions. ***If you frame up this item with Arader Galleries you can take a 50% discount off the listed price of this work of art.***

A General History of the Lives and Adventures of the Most Famous Highwaymen, Murderers, Street-Robbers Etc. To Which is Added a Genuine Account of the Voyages and Plunders of the Most Notorious Pyrates

      J. Janeway, London 1734 - [4], 484pp, [2]. Later full straight-grain morocco, raised bands, spine in six panels, author / title to second panel, place / date to third, remaining panels with central lozenge made up of flowers and leafy stem tools with volute and flower head corner pieces, covers with a triple fillet and dog-tooth roll border with a large armorial centrepiece with thistles to head and tail, double fillet to edges, elaborate roll to inner dentelles, a.e.g., with silk endpapers embossed with lions rampant and thistles. Slightly rubbed to extremities, upper cover with a two inch scrape beneath the gilt centrepiece. Internally very lightly browned but generally bright and clean. Title in red and black, engraved frontispiece and twenty-five full page engravings. A sumptuous copy of this classic work, the leading source for all subsequent piratical literature, much copied and pirated. Johnson's identity is unknown, the work is often attributed to Daniel Defoe, see Moore's 'A Checklist of the Writings of Daniel Defoe', but Furbank and Owens 'de-attribute' it in their critique of Moore's checklist. The first edition in this format, (Johnson's 'Lives of the Pyrates' was first published a decade earlier), much of the material was taken from Smith's 'Live's of Noted Highwaymen, Robbers, Thieves and Pickpockets' (1714), to which was added the chapters on pirates. Uncommon, especially complete and in such wonderful condition. Moore 458; Furbank and Owens, pg 133; NMM IV:274 [Attributes: Hard Cover]

Lettres, Ecrites de Londres sur Les Anglois et Autres Sujets.

[W. Bowyer? ], Basle [actually London?] 1734 - Hardcover. Small 8vo. French text. (viii) 228, (xx)pp. Contemporary half calf with marbled paper boards, leather spine label with gilt titling. The first edition of Voltaire's most important early works, the "Letters on the English." It comprises 24 "letters" on diverse subjects such as the Quakers, Religion, Philosophy, Learning, Politics etc., as well as discussions of the thought of various individuals including Locke, Bacon, Sir Isaac Newton, and Pope, based on observations made by Voltaire during a residence in Britain. This, the first French language edition, was the basis for most of the better later English translations. The author's name on the title page is "anonymised" as "Par M.D. V***" The imprint "A Basle" on the title page is false; the book is generally said to have been printed in London by W. Bowyer. This copy professionally, if rather stiffly, rebacked with original spine laid down, original boards retained. Boards rubbed, corners chafed and a bit rounded, edges rubbed with some light bumps, spine chafed. Replacement endpapers unevenly browned to match original. Author's name has been lightly added in ink to the title page, and there is an old owner's signature on the verso of the title page (both would appear to be eighteenth century). The pages appear to have been trimmed at some stage, but the margins are still generous. A few scattered pencil notes and checkmarks, and occasional light signs of age throughout. Still a solid, fresh about VG copy. [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]

Oraculum utriusque testamenti ad promiscuas in sacra Biblia interrogationes, servato literarum ordine, responsa reddens, & verbi divini Præconibus viam aperiens Ad innumerabiles argutas sententias. quas vocant Conceptus Prædicabiles, ex multiplici sacrarum literarum sensu, ac præcipuè literali, pro sermonis oppertunitate eruendas.

Lisbon, Miguel Rodrigues, 1734. - Title in red and black, woodcut vignette on title-page, elegant large woodcut headpiece and initial on leaf *ii recto, another woodcut headpiece and ititial, typographical headpieces. (8 ll.), 830 pp. Volume I [all published]. Folio (30.2 x 21.3 cm.), contemporary sheep (scraping to covers, some other minor binding defects), spine richly gilt with raised bands in seven compartments, red leather lettering and numbering pieces, gilt letter, edges sprinkled brown, blue and white, marbled endleaves. Internally clean, crisp and very fine. Overall in very good to fine condition. Volume I [all published]. ---- FIRST and ONLY EDITION of this handsomely printed erudite work, based on biblical scholarship, that aims to help preachers prepare more lively and erudite sermons. The preface (pp. 1-115) explains dozens of rhetorical figures such as metaphor and allegory, as well as the less familiar diezeugmenon, aposiopesis, prosopeia, etc.: for each Bluteau provides a definition and examples, sometimes quite lengthy. Then he moves on to an alphabetical list of terms that might be chosen as themes for a sermon, with a summary of the meaning of the term, the biblical passages in which it appears, and an outline of points to cover in a sermon focused on it.Bluteau died the year this volume of the @Oraculum appeared. No further volumes were published, and aspiring preachers were left to choose from sermon topics beginning with the letters "A" or "B". Though the work was never completed, the @Oraculum?s very structure emphasizes Bluteau?s fascination with language and lexicons: he is best known for the Vocabulario portuguez e latino, in ten volumes, which appeared in ten volumes, 1712-1728.Born of French parents in London, Rafael Bluteau (1638?1734) spent over fifty years in Portugal, including his late childhood and adolescence, and died in Lisbon. He became fluent in Portuguese, and his ten-volume @Vocabulário Portuguez e Latino, in effect the first Portuguese lexicon, is a work still of immense influence today. Passing from England to France, from France to Portugal, from Portugal to Italy, etc., he could also speak and write in English, French, Italian, Spanish, Latin and Greek. He served on a diplomatic mission to Italy under Duarte Ribeiro de Macedo. When Ribeiro de Macedo died along the way, Bluteau became chief of the mission. A favorite of Queen D. Maria Francisca Isabel of Savoy, wife of D. Afonso VI and then of his brother D. Pedro II, Bluteau participated in the "Conferencias discretas e eruditas" of the third Conde da Ericeira, later becoming close as well to Ericeira's son, the fourth Conde. Bluteau participated in diverse literary Academies favored and sponsored by the Ericeiras, such as the Generosos, Aplicados, etc., and was later nominated to the Real Academia de História by the king himself.---- Monteverde 559.       Presso Giovambatista Albrizzi Q. Gir, Venice 1734 - [6], 469, [3]. Black & white illustrations - 7 fold-out plates, including 2 maps by Isaac Tirion. Book is nicely produced on quality stock, elaborate tinted headpiece at beginning. An occasional page has ink notes. Previous owner signed rear endpaper. This volume is one part of a 23-volume series on history and geography of places in the world. Illustrations in this copy include a fold-out map of Borneo, tri-fold of Batavia, "Orang-Oetang" de Bosco, Pepe, fold-out map of Indo-China, fold-out Vestito, and a fold-out of a Siamese convento. Occasional insignificant traces of bookworm activity. Originally written in English and published in 1727, this was republished in Dutch, Italian, and German in succeeding years. This, a very early Italian translation, is in amazing condition for its age.

Les dons des enfans de Latone. La musique et la chasse du cerf. Tons de chasse et fanfares d'une et deux trompes.#

Prault, Desaint et Guérin, Paris 1734 - 2 vols. I: Frontis, XII-1 h., 330 p., 6 láms.

The Koran Commonly called The Alcoran of Mohammed,

London: by C. Ackers for J. Wilcox,, 1734. Translated into English immediately from the Original Arabic; with Explanatory Notes, taken from the most approved Commentators. To which is prefixed A Preliminary Discourse. By George Sale. Quarto (248 × 190 mm). Contemporary calf rebacked to style, red morocco label, red speckled edges. Folding map, 4 diagrams of which 3 are folding. Binding rubbed, wear to corners, very short closed tear to map at stub, a few faint spots but contents generally quite clean and fresh. An excellent copy. First edition of the second and most authoritative English version of the Koran. Although a solicitor by profession, George Sale (c.1696–1736) was a leading orientalist, having acted as corrector to the SPCK's Arabic translation of the New Testament (1727). His translation is prefixed by a long "preliminary discourse", a compendium of all that was known about the religion of Islam, itself separately translated into and published in several languages. The 1734 edition was the only one that was published during his lifetime, but the translation was reprinted in 1746, 1764 and many times afterward, most recently in 1984. Sale was textually indebted to the 1698 Latin translation of Ludovico Marracci, confessor to Pope Innocent XI, but unlike Marracci, Sale was convinced of the sincerity of Muhammad's intentions, though he remained eager to secure the conversion of the Muslims to Protestant Christianity. Sale's presumed partiality to Islam earned him the criticism of his orthodox contemporaries, and probably led to a breach with the SPCK, but scholars like Gibbon (whose treatment of Arabian history and Islam in his Decline and Fall relies heavily on Sale), Voltaire, and Lessing valued him highly. In 1921 Edward Denison Ross claimed that Sale's version had not yet been superseded, and more than fifty years later Sale's objectivity still guarded him from criticism in Edward Said's Orientalism (1978).
