Pope, Alexander].
London: A Dod, 1729. 4to, engraved title page with vignette of book-laden ass, 16, (2), 6, 9-29, (3), 118, cxix-cxxiv pp. Engraved head-pieces, woodcut tail-pieces. Full polished calf by Bedford, triple gilt fillet borders, backstrip gilt with floral designs and green labels, inner dentelles gilt, top edge gilt, bottom edge untrimmed. Front joint skillfully repaired, a clean and attractive copy with the signature and bookplate of Maurice Baring, and the monogram bookplate of Charles C. Kalbfleisch. First variorum edition, first complete edition of the first three books of The Dunciad. Pope didn't openly avow his authorship until 1735 but this is the first edition to include several unambiguous hints. According to Griffith, the real publisher was Lawton Gilliver who used the fictitious imprint to suggest the publisher was A. Dodd who had published all the London editions of 1728. This edition of the Dunciad, newly expanded with pseudo-scholarly paraphernalia and extensive ironic footnotes, was a counter-counter-attack in the ongoing war between Pope and his outraged satiric targets. This copy once belonged to Maurice Baring OBE (1874-1945), the English writer, Catholic convert, and regular member of the upper class literary circles including Virgina Woolf, Hilaire Belloc, and G.K. Chesterton. From him it passed to the American collector Charles C. Kalbfleisch (d.1943), a member of the Grolier Club for 50 years; his books, including this one, were auctioned by Parke-Bernet in January 1944 in the sale "The Arts of the Book . . . The Splendid Library Formed by the Late Charles … [Click Below for Full Description]

VERY RARE, ORIGINAL 1729 EDITION OF "AN ACT FOR ESTABLISHING AN AGREEMENT WITH SEVEN OF THE LORDS PROPRIETORS OF CAROLINA, FOR THE SURRENDER OF THEIR TITLE AND INTEREST IN THAT PROVINCE TO HIS MAJESTY." This important 18th century treatise was printed by Henry Hills, London. Seminal monograph in the annals of the Carolinas was published within the British Acts passed during the second session of the Parliament of 1727-1728 (first year of the reign of George II). British acts of this period, although issued separately, were paginated continuously as is the present work. This landmark act resulted in the separation of the northern and southern parts of the original Province of Carolina, and thus, the founding of North and South Carolina. It is among the most significant laws relating to colonial America passed during this parliamentary session, and a significant piece of early American history. Volume is scarce. Sabin 87355. The division between the northern and southern Carolina governments was cemented in 1712, however both colonies remained in the hands of the same group of proprietors. A rebellion against the proprietors broke out in 1719 which led to the appointment of a royal governor for South Carolina in 1720. After nearly a decade in which the British government sought to locate and buy out the proprietors, both North and South Carolina became royal colonies in 1729. "The Government of Carolina, from the surrender in 1729, became regal; and the Province was divided into North and South Carolina, by an order of the British Council, which fixed the boundaries between t … [Click Below for Full Description]

A previous bookseller's pencil note on the front end paper from some years ago suggests this 'second' edition is unrecorded. It … [Click Below for Full Description]

Madrid: Francisco Martinez Abad, 1729. Second edition, edited, and brought up to date by Andres Gonzales de Barcia Carballido y Zuniga, who had resided twelve years as a missionary in America. Folio, pp. [32], 1, 8-336, [80]; vignette title-p. showing ships approaching a coast, engraved portrait of Thomas Aquinas, 5 small engravings in the text; contemporary and probably original full limp vellum, spine lettered in ms.; nice copy. With the letterpress bookplate on the verso of the title-p. of Dr. D. Miguel Tafur (i.e. Miguel Tafur y Zea, 1766-1833), the noted Peruvian medical doctor whose biography is given by Juan Lastres in Vida y obras del Dr. Muguel Tafur (Lima, 1943). One of the earliest compilations concerning the origin of the native American. Garciaís opinion was that the American Indians descended from various races of the old world, including Chinese and Tartars. "But all his learning on this subject is of less value than the positive facts concerning the native tribes, which he drew partly from his own experiences in the New World, and partly from a MS. work by Juan de Vetanzos (one of the companions of Pizarro, and a man specially skilled in the native languages), which was in the possession of Garcia, and which has never been published. The fifth book of Garciaís work contains the native Indian accounts of their origin, and is divided into sections which treat separately of the various distinct tribes of Mexico and Peru." VERY RARE, ORIGINAL 1729 EDITION OF "AN ACT FOR ESTABLISHING AN AGREEMENT WITH SEVEN OF THE LORDS PROPRIETORS OF CAROLINA, FOR THE SURRENDER OF THEIR TITLE AND INTEREST IN THAT PROVINCE TO HIS MAJESTY." This important 18th century treatise was printed by Henry Hills, London.

Vankuli, Mehmed ibn Mustafa
Constantinople, Ibrahim Muteferrika 1141 A.H (1729). 2 volumes. Folio. Turkish Incunabula. The first book printed by a Muslim, at the First Printing Press in the Muslim World, printed in a single column throughout, within a printed border. The work is an Arabic-Turkish Dictionary, sometimes called Jawhari’s Dictionary, written originally as an Arabic to Arabic dictionary by Jawhari (d. 1009-10), here adapted into an Arabic-Turkish dictionary by Vankuli (d. 1592) and printed by Ibrahim Muteferrika (1674-1745) with the approval of Sultan Ahmed III. Muteferrika was a Hungarian Calvinist captured by the Ottomans as a teenager. In Istanbul, he learned Turkish, converted to Islam, and completely assimilated into the society. A true polymath who valued culture and education, he contributes an essay in this work in which he argues the importance of the dissemination of knowledge through printing. This is the First of Seventeen books that Mutferrika printed at his press, often referred to as Turkish Incunabula and are the first books printed by Muslims. Extremely scarce, only 1000 copies were printed. We could only find one incomplete copy for sale at auction in 2014 (Boston) that sold for $9225. Ships from U.A.E.
