VERY RARE, ORIGINAL 1729 EDITION OF "AN ACT FOR ESTABLISHING AN AGREEMENT WITH SEVEN OF THE LORDS PROPRIETORS OF CAROLINA, FOR THE SURRENDER OF THEIR TITLE AND INTEREST IN THAT PROVINCE TO HIS MAJESTY." This important 18th century treatise was printed by Henry Hills, London. Seminal monograph in the annals of the Carolinas was published within the British Acts passed during the second session of the Parliament of 1727-1728 (first year of the reign of George II). British acts of this period, although issued separately, were paginated continuously as is the present work. This landmark act resulted in the separation of the northern and southern parts of the original Province of Carolina, and thus, the founding of North and South Carolina. It is among the most significant laws relating to colonial America passed during this parliamentary session, and a significant piece of early American history. Volume is scarce. Sabin 87355. The division between the northern and southern Carolina governments was cemented in 1712, however both colonies remained in the hands of the same group of proprietors. A rebellion against the proprietors broke out in 1719 which led to the appointment of a royal governor for South Carolina in 1720. After nearly a decade in which the British government sought to locate and buy out the proprietors, both North and South Carolina became royal colonies in 1729. "The Government of Carolina, from the surrender in 1729, became regal; and the Province was divided into North and South Carolina, by an order of the British Council, which fixed the boundaries between t … [Click Below for Full Description]

John Freind
T. Cox, London, 1729. SIGNED in period ink on the front pastedown, ffep and title page by Major John Walker, North Carolina Revolutionary War Office and Planter (more below). 216 pp. + index. Full calf leather binding. Nice condition. Not Ex-Lib. Contemporary bookplate on front pastedown. First edition in English of the first text on menstruation which appeared during the eighteenth century. This was the author's first book, originally published in Latin in 1703. Freind believed menstruation resulted from a plethora of the body, and because of erect posture the blood escaped via the uterus and vagina. Though his views on menstruation were not very popular, he provided some significant medical insight into the subject, such as proving by a calculation that the amount of blood passing through the umbilical cord would be sufficient for the needs of an embryo. Freind (1675-1728) was the first English medical historian. He was committed to the Tower, where he plotted in detail his History of Physick (1725-26), still considered a classic I've done my best to describe the book, but if you have additional questions, please don't hesitate to send me an e-mail.Walker, John (Jack) by William S. Madrid: Francisco Martinez Abad, 1729. Second edition, edited, and brought up to date by Andres Gonzales de Barcia Carballido y Zuniga, who had resided twelve years as a missionary in America. Folio, pp. [32], 1, 8-336, [80]; vignette title-p. showing ships approaching a coast, engraved portrait of Thomas Aquinas, 5 small engravings in the text; contemporary and probably original full limp vellum, spine lettered in ms.; nice copy. With the letterpress bookplate on the verso of the title-p. of Dr. D. Miguel Tafur (i.e. Miguel Tafur y Zea, 1766-1833), the noted Peruvian medical doctor whose biography is given by Juan Lastres in Vida y obras del Dr. Muguel Tafur (Lima, 1943). One of the earliest compilations concerning the origin of the native American. Garciaís opinion was that the American Indians descended from various races of the old world, including Chinese and Tartars. "But all his learning on this subject is of less value than the positive facts concerning the native tribes, which he drew partly from his own experiences in the New World, and partly from a MS. work by Juan de Vetanzos (one of the companions of Pizarro, and a man specially skilled in the native languages), which was in the possession of Garcia, and which has never been published. The fifth book of Garciaís work contains the native Indian accounts of their origin, and is divided into sections which treat separately of the various distinct tribes of Mexico and Peru." Quevedo Villegas, Francisco de
Madrid: Pedro Joseph Alonso de Padilla, 1729. Hardcover. Good. Published 1729, 3 volumes, oflten referred to as Quevedos's 'Obras' although he wrote quite a bit more. First published in the mid-17th century. Large 8vo, original limp vellum, (20), 645 [misprinted as 585] (17); (4) 5-315 [misprinted as 316] (10); (16) 301, folding epitaph plate (16) pp, with frontispieces for first two volumes and 6 other woodcut images, mainly of the muses. Good to very good, usual wrinkling and stains to vellum, first volume has slight wear and edge loss to preliminary pages, one repaired tear, lacks rear flyleaf, second volume has slight indented loss to fore edge of front cover else very good; third volume also has slight loss to upper fore edge of front cover, text very good. All texts show light age toning and tanning but free of marks, and all bindings show the stumps where there used to be leather ties. A very handsome set of Quevedo, the foremost poet of the Spanish Enlightenment, who, with his myopic vision and attendant pince nez, looks very much like the kind of hipster you'd see on the streets of Brooklyn. No one would give him a second glance.

Amhurst (Nicholas)]
Printed by R. Francklin, 1729. broadside, folio (485 x 150 mm), printed on recto only, text in 3 columns, engraved vignette at the top of the middle column, a few creases, several times folded, with minor loss to 1 line of text in the central column (sense recoverable) and to the centre of the engraving, a few spots, minor fraying and dustiness at edges, good . An issue of 'The Craftsman' which had originally been published on the 7th December 1728 and is here published as a broadside. In essence, this is an attack on the notion that 'there is no such thing as Society', given the wholly selfish pursuit of Government pensions and positions. The author brings forward the example of the Huguenots, who had settled in England, and by dint of industry had greatly increased the nation's Riches: some who came were too old to work, and King William established a Pension of £15,000 for their maintenance, but even that was now being grubbed up by greedy politicians. Amhurst is best known for his satires on the Univeristy of Oxford. 'That Amhurst, after the success of the Terrae-filius, with its whig sympathies, should then edit (for Bolingbroke and Pulteney) the leading anti-Walpole newspaper, The Craftsman, epitomizes not only a mercurial element in his personality but also a tendency to self-destructiveness and a rigid opposition to governing authorities. He conducted (under the pseudonym Caleb D'Anvers) The Craftsman from its inception in December 1726 until the Pulteney circle was accommodated to the government in 1737. Estimates of The Craftsman's circulation vary from an improba … [Click Below for Full Description]

Kultugeschichte. - Portrait. - After Peter Paul Rubens by James McArdell (Irish, Dublin 17291765 London).
174265. Mezzotint second state (of 2). plate: 20 1/16 x 14 1/16 in. (51 x 35.7 cm) Mounted on carton, one waterstain on the lower corner (5 x 7 cm). Overall in good condition, very fresh print. He was born in Cow Lane (later Greek Street), Dublin, around 1729. He learnt mezzotint-engraving from John Brooks. When Brooks moved to London about 1746, MacArdell and other pupils followed. He opened a print shop at the Golden Head in Covent Garden, where in 1753 he published six views of Dublin. MacArdell died on 2 June 1765, in his fifty-seventh year, and was buried in the churchyard at Hampstead, where a stone bore an inscription to his memory. ---- His earliest work appears to be a head of Archbishop Hugh Boulter in an engraving, altered from one by Brooks of Bishop Robert Howard. A head of Dr. Birch is stated to have been done by MacArdell in London. A portrait of Bishop Thomas Secker, engraved by MacArdell, was published in London in 1767, and also a humorous plate, entitled Teagues Ramble. In 1748 he engraved a portrait of John Cartwright, after S. Elmer, and a small portrait of Charles Bancks, a Swedish painter, for the Chevalier Descazeaux, an eccentric confined in the Fleet Prison, of whose portrait MacArdell made two etchings. In 1749, he engraved the picture of Lady Boyd, after Allan Ramsay, and the portrait by William Hogarth of Thomas Coram in 1750, the Duke of Dorset, after Kneller, and The Sons of the Duke of Buckingham, after Anthony van Dyck. In 1754 he engraved his first plates after Sir Joshua Reynolds these plates were the Earl and Countess of Kildare, compa … [Click Below for Full Description]

BROOKING, Charles]
Henry Overton and John Hoole, at the White Horse, Without Newgate Hannah Madocks at the Red Lion, in New Row, in Thomas Street, [c1729]., London and Dublin. mean pyratical Practices Engraved map on two sheets joined. The pirated Overton edition of Charles Broooking's seminal plan of Dublin. Brooking's work is not only "the first major map of Dublin since John Speed" (O'Cionnaith), but it is also the earliest to portrayal Dublin on such a large and detailed scale. The Plan The plan, on a scale of seven yards to an Irish perch, stretches north to south from the Linen Hall to St Stephen's Green, and west to east from the Royal Hospital to Ringsend. The bottom left bears an inset of the Poor House, together with an extensive text. Above is a view of Dublin from the north, with an explanatory key to the upper right. Curiously Brooking has decided to orientate the plan south to north, presumably to correspond with the orientation of the view. Publication and Piracy When Brooking completed the work in 1728, his manuscript consisted of a large plan below a view of the city, flanked by 20 vignette views of major public buildings and statues, together wi … [Click Below for Full Description]
