Jonson, Ben
S. Powell, Dublin, 1729. Please see listing for details. Very Rare Antiquarian Set of Ben Jonson's Plays in Two Volumes S. Powell; Dublin; 1729 16mo size hardcovers with full calf leather bindings. Ben Jonson (1572-1637) was a British playwright and poet, considered one of the greatest English playwrights of all times. Extremely rare set of both volumes. This two volume set shows the ravages of its almost 300 year history. Volume I: Contains: Volpone; or, the Fox; Catiline his Conspiracy; Bartholomew Fair; Sejanus his Fall. Condition: Disbound: front and rear boards detached; book is split at pages 142/143. Pencilled date (1818) inside front cover, with pencilled note (2 vols) fep has name and date (not sure if it's 1810 or 1870); bookseller's pencilled notations. Condition: pencilled price on fep; initials on title page; Disbound: front cover detached; book split at pages 188/189; rear cover is attached. We noted some pencilled brackets, line and marginalia on page 189. Full calf bindings have five raised bands on spine, worn corners and considerable rubbing. Volume one has half of the title block on spine with gilt titles (helpful to know what was there if you choose to restore these rare books), the stamped title block is missing from volume two although you can see and read the impressions of the missing stamped title block. There are some tanned bands to inside of cover edges and edges of fep; we speculate that this tanning was caused from a brown pap … [Click Below for Full Description]

Mathurin Cordier
Edinburgh: Thomas Ruddiman, 1729. Unrecorded edition of an abridged version of the French-born author's Colloquia. The third edition edited by English grammarian William Willymott (d. 1737), following a London edition of 1716 and Edinburgh edition of 1724. Cordier's grammar was immensely popular across Europe, ESTC alone recording more than 150 editions, all of which are scarce. CONDITION: Contemporary leather with an attached overcover of suede and alum-tawed skin, stitched together along the spine by an 18th-century owner. ¶ Occasional light staining throughout; minor worming to rear endpapers. PROVENANCE: Inserted at end is a 25-page English translation of Cordier's admonition to his students (the final chapter of the present book) prepared by Ebenezer Knibloe in his own legible hand and dated 2 June 1746. Knibloe, an ordained minister of the Church of Scotland, supported the losing side in the 1745 Jacobite uprising. Possibly on account of Charles Stuart's failed attempt to secure the British throne, Ebenezer came to America in the late 1740s or early 1750s, settling in Amenia Union, NY as a Presbyterean pastor. A loyalist during the American Revolution, he chose the losing side in yet another rebellion and reportedly retired from his pastorship as a result. This book was evidently among his possessions when he emigrated to America. ¶ Ownership signatures of Bo. Slosson and J.W. Slosson on front fly-leaf. REFERENCES: Not in ESTC; not in COPAC ¶ The Prindle Genealogy, p. 51-53 (on Ebenezer)

Innes, Thomas
London: Printed for William Innys, 1729. FIRST EDITION, 2 vols., 8vo. pp. li, [xiii], 400; [ii], 401-839, [1] + one folding table in each vol. Contemporary sprinkled calf. Title-pages toned, a touch of spotting elsewhere. Sometime rebacked with lighter leather, red labels, preserving earlier endpapers, now a little rubbed, a few corners a touch worn. Shelfmark label of Newbattle Abbey Library to pastedowns, small armorial label in each vol. along with an ownership stamp and inscription of H. Ancram. The first edition of this important critical history of Scotland, which, despite the author's own biases, offered a necessary corrective to the myths which had formed the basis of previous histories. 'In this work he used precise historical methods to refute the mythic history of Scottish kings. Yet Innes had his own agenda, to vindicate primogeniture in the interest of the Jacobite cause, and his substitution of the Pictish line of kings is exceedingly suspect' (ODNB). ESTC T146374.

F. [Francis] Midon
Printed for C. Davis and T. Green, 1729. 12mo. Full Leather. First Edition. Francis Midon notes in the dedication that Masaniello received poor and biased treatment by earlier commentators and historians. Indeed, the major contemporary work by Giraffi treats the man as a tyrant and madman, and English accounts of the time read more like dramatic tragedy than historical treatise. Midon consciously seeks a less biased telling, and criticizes his predecessors for their injustice; this may be the first favorable account of the revolutionary found in the English canon. A First Edition copy, which collates complete against the ESTC. [2], xii, 226, [2]. Title page in red and black; with a final advertisement leaf. Uncolored portrait frontispiece of Masaniello. Full Calf, with tooling in blind on the front and rear boards; raised bands. Discreetly rebacked by a conservator with Japanese tissue. (ESTC T125465 ). Very Good binding. [Attributes: First Edition]

He appears to have served for some time in the Royal Navy, and to have been a midshipman in 1745. Passages in his own writings show that he was employed in Indian waters from 1753 almost continuously. He implies that during part of the Seven Years' War he was on the Elizabeth, in the squadron under Admiral Charles Steevens but this cannot be verified from the pay-book. In 1762 Forrest had command of a Company ship. In 1770 he was engaged in forming the new settlement at Balambang … [Click Below for Full Description]

VERY RARE, ORIGINAL 1729 EDITION OF "AN ACT FOR ESTABLISHING AN AGREEMENT WITH SEVEN OF THE LORDS PROPRIETORS OF CAROLINA, FOR THE SURRENDER OF THEIR TITLE AND INTEREST IN THAT PROVINCE TO HIS MAJESTY." This important 18th century treatise was printed by Henry Hills, London. Seminal monograph in the annals of the Carolinas was published within the British Acts passed during the second session of the Parliament of 1727-1728 (first year of the reign of George II). British acts of this period, although issued separately, were paginated continuously as is the present work. This landmark act resulted in the separation of the northern and southern parts of the original Province of Carolina, and thus, the founding of North and South Carolina. It is among the most significant laws relating to colonial America passed during this parliamentary session, and a significant piece of early American history. Volume is scarce. Sabin 87355. The division between the northern and southern Carolina governments was cemented in 1712, however both colonies remained in the hands of the same group of proprietors. A rebellion against the proprietors broke out in 1719 which led to the appointment of a royal governor for South Carolina in 1720. After nearly a decade in which the British government sought to locate and buy out the proprietors, both North and South Carolina became royal colonies in 1729. "The Government of Carolina, from the surrender in 1729, became regal; and the Province was divided into North and South Carolina, by an order of the British Council, which fixed the boundaries between t … [Click Below for Full Description]

The plate of The American Goldfinch [Cardulelis Americanus] is Plate 43 from Volume I; The Parus Luteus or Yellow Titmouse is Plate 63. The plates are nicely presented in maple frames with painted glass mats. The muted coloring and the paper suggest that these Catesby birds are almost certainly from the First Edition, issued between 1729 and 1746.

Garcia, Gregorio
Francisco Martinez Abad, 1729. Second edition, edited, and brought up to date by Andres Gonzales de Barcia Carballido y Zuniga, who had resided twelve years as a missionary in America. Folio, pp. [32], 1, 8-336, [80]; vignette title-p. showing ships approaching a coast, engraved portrait of Thomas Aquinas, 5 small engravings in the text; contemporary and probably original full limp vellum, spine lettered in ms.; nice copy. With the letterpress bookplate on the verso of the title-p. of Dr. D. Miguel Tafur (i.e. Miguel Tafur y Zea, 1766-1833), the noted Peruvian medical doctor whose biography is given by Juan Lastres in Vida y obras del Dr. Muguel Tafur (Lima, 1943). One of the earliest compilations concerning the origin of the native American. Garciaís opinion was that the American Indians descended from various races of the old world, including Chinese and Tartars. "But all his learning on this subject is of less value than the positive facts concerning the native tribes, which he drew partly from his own experiences in the New World, and partly from a MS. work by Juan de Vetanzos (one of the companions of Pizarro, and a man specially skilled in the native languages), which was in the possession of Garcia, and which has never been published. The fifth book of Garciaís work contains the native Indian accounts of their origin, and is divided into sections which treat separately of the various distinct tribes of Mexico and Peru." Medina IV, 2713; Borba de Moraes I, 346; Sabin, 26567: "a work of vast erudition. All that has ever been imagined as to the origin of the Americans, … [Click Below for Full Description]

A rigorous distillation of all psychological disturbances as symptoms of physical changes to the nerves and brain. "Drawing from the major scientific advances of the seventeenth century, particularly Newtonian physics and Willis's neuroanatomical studies, Robinson devised a rigorously somaticist theory of mental illness, which reduced all psychological processes to mere symptoms of physical events in the nerves and brain. To Robinson, mental diseases were no imaginary whims and fancies, but real affections of the mind, arising from the real, mechanical affections of matter and motion, whenever the constitution of the brain warps from its natural standard" (Norman). "Robinson was one of the first to argue that nerve fibers could control behavior, and that their pathological laxity led to one of the primary causes of melancholy. While he was a bit far off on the last, he was on target in arguing that insanity was a genuine … [Click Below for Full Description]

John Freind
T. Cox, London, 1729. SIGNED in period ink on the front pastedown, ffep and title page by Major John Walker, North Carolina Revolutionary War Office and Planter (more below). 216 pp. + index. Full calf leather binding. Nice condition. Not Ex-Lib. Contemporary bookplate on front pastedown. First edition in English of the first text on menstruation which appeared during the eighteenth century. This was the author's first book, originally published in Latin in 1703. Freind believed menstruation resulted from a plethora of the body, and because of erect posture the blood escaped via the uterus and vagina. Though his views on menstruation were not very popular, he provided some significant medical insight into the subject, such as proving by a calculation that the amount of blood passing through the umbilical cord would be sufficient for the needs of an embryo. Freind (1675-1728) was the first English medical historian. He was committed to the Tower, where he plotted in detail his History of Physick (1725-26), still considered a classic I've done my best to describe the book, but if you have additional questions, please don't hesitate to send me an e-mail.Walker, John (Jack) by William S. Madrid: Pedro Joseph Alonso de Padilla. Published 1729, 3 volumes, oflten referred to as Quevedos's 'Obras' although he wrote quite a bit more. First published in the mid-17th century. Large 8vo, original limp vellum, (20), 645 [misprinted as 585] (17); (4) 5-315 [misprinted as 316] (10); (16) 301, folding epitaph plate (16) pp, with frontispieces for first two volumes and 6 other woodcut images, mainly of the muses. Good to very good, usual wrinkling and stains to vellum, first volume has slight wear and edge loss to preliminary pages, one repaired tear, lacks rear flyleaf, second volume has slight indented loss to fore edge of front cover else very good; third volume also has slight loss to upper fore edge of front cover, text very good. All texts show light age toning and tanning but free of marks, and all bindings show the stumps where there used to be leather ties. A very handsome set of Quevedo, the foremost poet of the Spanish Enlightenment, who, with his myopic vision and attendant pince nez, looks very much like the kind of hipster you'd see on the streets of Brooklyn. No one would give him a second glance. Good.
