New Reflexions on the Fair Sex. Written originally in French, by the celebrated Marchioness de Lambert, (and by her suppress'd)...Translated into English by J. Lockman

London: Printed and sold by N. Prevost .... 1729. First. First edition in English. xxviii, 72pp. Bound in old, but later unprinted wrappers. A little soiling and very light foxing, a handsome, near fine copy. An important book by a woman about women, the Marchioness de Lambert bridges the gap between the 17th and 18th Centuries, and the salon she presided over was at the center of Parisian literary and intellectual life. In this book she reproaches men with "spoiling the dispositions nature has given to women, neglecting their education, filling their minds with nothing solid, and destining them solely to please, and to please only by their graces or their vices." It was doubtless these unpopular opinions, and her aversion to the publicity of authorship, that led her to buy the entire edition of her Reflexions sur les Femmes, which was published without her consent. The book has been almost continuously in print since originally published, and has gained new life in women's studies programs. OCLC locates but three copies worldwide -- two at the University of California, and one at Princeton. .

Bon ensemble. In-12° [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]

15000 gr. [Attributes: Hard Cover]

The Secrets of the Invisible World Disclos'd. Or, an Universal History of Apparitions Sacred and Prophane, Under all Denominations; Whether, Angelical, Diabolical, or Human Souls departed. [previously: 'History and Reality of Apparitions']

      J. Clarke A. Millar and J. Green, London 1729 - Hardcover, 8vo, [xii +] 396 pp, Contemporary calf boards, with later (nineteenth century?) leather spine raised bands and blind tooling and leather spine labels with gilt titling between bands. Frontis, and five full-page engraved plates. The third issue of the first edition of the last of Defoe's treatises on the supernatural. It was also the last issue published during the author's lifetime. The book was first published anonymously in March 1727 under the title "An Essay on the History and Reality of Apparitions " but perhaps because of the anonymity sales were slow. In November 1728 it was reissued using the same sheets as the first edition, but with a new title-page which identified the author as "Andrew Moreton" (a pseudonym which Defoe had used several times previously) a different title and a different publisher ("J. Peele"). In February of the following year it was reissued once more, using the same first edition sheets, but again with a different title page, the details of which was essentially the same as those of the second issue, except that it had yet another publisher's imprint (J. Clarke, A. Millar and J. Green). This, the third issue of the First Edition, was also the final issue of that edition. The Second Edition, which was a complete new printing, did not appear until 1735, four years after the author's death. The book itself is essentially a lengthy argument attesting to the existence of beings of "the invisible world." The waning of belief in witchcraft during the seventeenth century had been accompanied by a broader rejection of the supernatural, a viewpoint against which Defoe argued vehemently, suggesting that disbelief in apparitions was tantamount to religious unbelief. In this work he explores the nature of ghosts, angels, and other supernatural beings, arguing that while they may not be as we imagine them (he did not, for example, believe ghosts to be the spirits of departed people) they existed nonetheless, as had been well attested throughout history. The full subtitle gives a fair summation of its contents: Or, an Universal History of Apparitions Sacred and Prophane, Under all Denominations; Whether, Angelical, Diabolical, or Human Souls departed. Shewing I. THEIR various Returns to this World; with sure Rules to know, by their Manner of Appearing, if they are Good or Evil ones. II. The Differences of the Apparitions of Antient and Modern Times; and an Enquiry into the Scriptural Doctrine of Spirits. III. The many Species of Apparitions, their real Existence, and Operations by Divine Appointment. IV. The Nature of seeing Ghosts before, and after, Death; and how we should behave towards them. V. The Effects of Fancy, Vapours, Dreams, Hyppo, and of real or Imaginary Appearances. VI. A Collection of the most Authentic Relations of Apparitions, particularly that surprizing One attested by the learned Dr. Scott. The spine has been sympathetically rebacked, probably during the nineteenth century, preserving the original boards, which are rubbed and rounded at the corners. Old pencil notes to rear blank and pastedowns, clipping from a bookseller's catalogue advertising a different edition on the front pastedown. Title page a little grubbing, a few spots of browning and a few faint discolored patches to the margins here and there, but the over all the pages are clean and supple, and generally the books is an attractive VG+ copy. Letter Signed ("Le Card. de Fleury) to Cardinal Corradini on matters relating to the Jansenists

[Paris?, 9 mai 1729 - A letter of great interest, relating to Jansenism and the reaction of the Church authorities to the challenge it posed. Fleury (1653-1743) was an extremely powerful advisor and minister to Louis XV, a member of l'Académie Française. He wrote this immediately following the death of Cardinal de Noailles, the Archbishop of Paris who was closely associated with policy of the Papal Bull known as Unigenitus (1713), which had virtually banished Jansenists from the Church. In the years following the Bull, known as the period of 'appeal' because the Jansenists called for a new Church Council to resolve the issues, the clergy was divided. In his letter announcing the death of the Cardinal de Noailles, Fleury expresses his hopes for a period when Jansenism will diminish, and cites various cases of retraction among the dissidents. " Folio. 7 pp. Tipped into a bound volumes with several other documents, engravings of the period, including engraved portraits of Cardinal Noailles, Louis XVI, a portrait of Fleury himself, of Phillippe d'Orléans, regent of France, and a letter to Phillippe from a Carmelite order asking for charity. Gilt extremities. Boards concave. A small stain of rust on the title page, but apart from that, a clean copy. From the library of Biby manor. The original, "Astro-theology: or, a demonstration of the being and attributes of God" was published for the first time in 1715 and translated into French by François Bellenger. The English clergyman and scientist William Derham (1657-1735) was a fellow of the Royal Society and an important representative of the physico-theological school of thinking, in which teleological arguments was put forth for the being and attributes of God. This work accounts for several newly identified nebulae, some of which we now know as star clusters. Derhams 16-feet long telescope was placed at the top of the tower of St Laurence's Church and was also used when he made his famous estimate of the speed of sound. [Attributes: Hard Cover]

Musschenbroek (1692-1761), professor of natural philosophy and mathematics at Utrecht and, later, professor of experimental physics at Leyden, was one of the most celebrated physicists and most important investigators of his time. The experiments described in his books have become classics in elementary instruction. "Underlying Musschenbroek's lectures demonstrated with experiments was the experimental philosophy...the principal source of inspiration was Newton, but Galileo, Torricelli, Huygens, Réaumur, and others were important to this school."-D.S.B., IX, p. 596. Very good copy, preserved in a box. Ex Bibliotheca Mechanica. .

        Die Geduld. ("Patience").

. Kupferstich in Punktiermanier, in mehreren Farben, von W.W. Ryland (1729 oder 1732-1783), auf Bütten. Darstellung im Hochoval. 37,7:29 cm. Published London 1777. Literatur: Nagler 19; Le Blanc 25; Boerner 1979, vgl. 185; vgl. Ausst. Katalog: Angelika Kauffmann. Ein Weib von ungeheurem Talent. Hrsg. von T.G. Natter. Bregenz 2007, Nr. 150 (Rotdruck).
