        The Musical Miscellany

1729. WATTS, John. The Musical Miscellany; Being a Collection of Choice Songs, Set to the Violin and Flute, By the Most Eminent Masters. Six volumes. [14], 175, [1]; [10], 179, [1]; [14], 200; [10], 204; [14], 208; [10], 208 pp. With six frontispieces. 8vo., 174 x 105 mm, bound in early nineteenth-century half green morocco and marbled paper over boards, spines faded to brown, raised bands gilt, gilt lettering in spine compartments. London: Printed by and for John Watts, 1729 [-1731]. First Edition of this comprehensive collection of some 450 songs. For each song are printed the melody for voice and/or violin, the verses in full, and music for a contrasting flute accompaniment. An unfigured basso continuo has been added in volumes III to VI, which is reflected in the titles to those volumes: "with the Basses to each Tune." The work is illustrated throughout with engraved headpieces, tailpieces and vignettes. The pieces collected here represent a wide variety of contemporary English songs: love songs, comic and bawdy numbers, and solemn works alike. Eleven of these have been attributed to Handel, including two printed here for the first time: "Dull Bus'ness hence" and "As on a Sunshine Summer's Day" (Smith, p. 167). Also included are songs and settings by John Gay, Matthew Prior, Alexander Pope, Lewis Theobald, Richard Leveridge, John Ernest Galliard, Daniel Purcell and many others. Of special note, volume six contains early piece by Henry Fielding: "A dialogue between a Beau's Head and his Heels." Ownership signature clipped from title of volume one, but present in volume two: "J. Whatle[y?]." Lacks half-titles; some scattered foxing ; several tears in volume one affecting text; minor tears in other volumes, including the frontispiece of volume 4, expertly repaired. Leaves G4-5, K2-7, N7-8 supplied from another copy, probably in early nineteenth century when this copy was rebound. BUC II, 719. Cf. W. C. Smith, Handel: a descriptive Catalogue of the Early Editions.

Copper engraved map of Greece after Ortelius from Pieter van der Aa's " La Galerie Agreable du Monde." Original old colour; folded; verso blank. This scarce map from van der Aa's monumental work is even more rare with original colour. The area of Greece is with full wash colour whilst the surrounding countries have outline colour. Decorative title cartouche on blank pedestal, with ornamented scale [ both black and white as issued]. A version of the map also appears in the " Thesaurus Graecarum Antiquitatum" of J.Gronovius published by van der Aa between 1697 & 1702 [ Zacharakis Map 49] but with a different title, therefor sole edition thus. Dark impression; general toning ; bright original old colour; folded with short split on fold [10mm] below scale. Pieter van der Aa 1659-1733 Pieter van der Aa was a publisher, editor and bookseller of Leiden. He started as a bookseller at the age of twenty-three. In 1682 he is mentioned as the owner of a bookshop and auction house and by 1692 was one of the High commissioners of the Booksellers' Guild. As a publisher his output was varied and prodigious though his main interest was the production of maps and atlases, which he printed in all sizes. He published two extensive works in multiple volumes; the "Naaukeurige versameling der Gedenkwaardigste see-enland-reysen"[ "Collection of memorable sea and land voyages"] published 1706-1708 in 28 volumes and" La Galerie Agreable du Monde" 66 parts in 27 volumes, completed in 1729 and containing over 3 000 maps of which it is said only 100 sets were published (Tooley, p. 1) ;as well as various atlases such as the "Atlas Nouveau" completed circa 1710 and other illustrated books, Acquiring the map plates of earlier cartographers and map mappers, van der Aa was famous for re-issuing several important maps in the eighteenth century. Many of these maps were engraved by well-known Dutch engravers such as Luiken, Goeree and Stoopendael, and are typical examples of early eighteenth-century map production. Rebacked preserving original spine, neat restoration to extremities, a fine copy. The rare first edition of the first book with coloured plates to include American birds. Bird books were popular in eighteenth century England, both as works of scholarship and as splendid collectables for the libraries of wealthy connoisseurs. The naturalist Mark Catesby (1683-1749) born in Essex, produced one of the most lavish of these with this magnificent work, the result of a series of voyages to North America. "He seems to have been educated locally in spite of having affluent parents, forgoing a university education, but benefiting from the antiquarian and botanical knowledge of his grandfather Nicholas Jekyll, who was acquainted with the naturalist John Ray. Ray greatly influenced Catesby; Samuel Dale, an apothecary at Braintree, not far from Sudbury where Catesby lived, was also of great importance to him. Catesby raised the means for starting on a voyage in 1712 to Virginia where he stayed with his aunt Elizabeth Cocke and her physician husband. He studied botany and wildlife there for seven years. Catesby returned to England in 1719 with a collection of dried plants, reported to have been the most perfect ever brought into the country, which attracted the attention of men of science, especially Sir Hans Sloane and Dr Sherard. Catesby remained in England for some time, arranging and naming his specimens, a considerable number of which passed into Sloane's museum (thereafter into the British Museum and ultimately the Natural History Museum). With assistance from Sloane and others, Catesby went again to America in 1722 and sent from Carolina to his English subscribers large quantities of biological material. He also prepared for himself large drawings of birds, reptiles, fish, and plants, and explored the Bahama Islands in 1725" (ODNB). Returning to England in 1726, he studied etching to make the illustrations for his own works. As well as birds, Catesby also depicted flowers and the coralline reefs of the Bahamas. The Natural history of Carolina ... became the most authoritative treatment of the natural history of British North America before the American Revolution. A self-taught naturalist, he not only drew all the plates bar two by Ehret, he also coloured all 156 sets himself, a total of some 34,320 plates! Apart from his fame as an author and illustrator, Catesby's name lives on in the modern name for the bullfrog, Rana catesbeiana, and Lilium catesbaei, the Southern Red, or Catesby's Lily. His is a beautiful book, not as polished as the later works of the great age of bird illustration, or the botanical works of the great continental artists such as Ehret, but it is the first book to cover the subject in such depth and presents a powerful ecological view of nature: "Catesby played in identifying and recording botanical varieties previously unknown to English audiences Moreover, his birds, snakes, and squirrels all seem to reflect human personalities as they are placed side-by-side with the novel botanicals that captured his attention. These thoughtful portrayals emphasize Catesby's ecological aesthetic - his work cannot be viewed as rigid still-lives - for he presented his subjects with powerful fluidity and he depicted them within interdependent environments. With an understanding of Catesby's ecologically-sensitive vision, the dedication that led him to document these natural wonders so carefully, and the intricate hand-colouring process he employed for almost two decades to produce such exquisite prints, we see his emphasis on the interdependence of all species and the symbiotic nature of the environment he attempted to capture" (Milwaukee Art Museum). "Mark Catesby made a valuable and important contribution to ornithological illustration. He was confident enough to break new ground to portray his birds more naturally than before, with foliage backgrounds, and to adopt the folio format. He depicted the natural history of one area in its entirety, and often drew from living models. He was the first in a long line of ornithologists to teach himself to translate his drawings into a medium that produced multiple copies. As his was the earliest published natural history of a part of the New World, he has been called 'the father of American ornithology'" (Jackson).

Sharp's Journey over the isthmus of Darien, and expedition into the South-Seas. VI. Capt. Wood's Voyage through the streights of Magellan. VII. Mr. Roberts' Adventures and Sufferings amongst the Corsairs of the Levant

London: Printed for James and John Knapton, 1729. Four volumes, octavo, with many engraved plates and maps; bookplate in each volume; contemporary sprinkled calf, maroon leather labels; spines very lightly rubbed, but a most attractive set. FINISHED. A fine set of the collected edition of Dampier. The 1729 collected edition of Dampier, "considered by many to be the best edition" (Hill). Dampier's books were all but devoured by an enthusiastic reading public, meaning that the great majority of copies still in existence are very worn indeed, making this handsome set in contemporary binding a rare survival.Dampier is best known of course as the first Englishman to land on the Australian continent, and along with his interesting observations on Shark Bay and the northwest coast of Australia his books are particularly good on the flora and fauna of the region (many of his bird, fish and flower discoveries are illustrated with charming woodcut illustrations). As James A. Williamson wrote in his introduction to the Argonaut Press's 1939 edition of the Voyage to New Holland, "Dampier's permanent service to his countrymen was to arouse their interest in the exploration of the Pacific. He did it so effectively that in the eighteenth century they took the lead in revealing the tropical islands and the coasts of Australia and New Zealand...". This Australian emphasis should be seen in the wider context of Dampier's complete works as a major body of Pacific description, of considerable importance for any study of the discovery and colonisation of the entire region. In fact, at the end of the seventeenth-century Dampier was petitioning the English and Scottish governments to colonise Panama as a stepping-stone to further exploration of the Pacific, leading to the ill-fated Darien colony: if Darien had succeeded, it is not an idle speculation to suggest that the British incursion into the Pacific might have taken place some 70 years earlier than Cook's famous voyages. And, of course, Dampier himself was bitterly disappointed by the fact that his ship HMS Roebuck became unseaworthy just at the point when he had hoped to sail for the east coast of New Holland.Dampier's first book was published in 1697, an account of his early voyaging in the Pacific and Indian Oceans, while his account of the famous voyage of HMS Roebuck appeared in two parts in 1703 and 1709. All of his works were issued by the enterprising published Knapton, who also issued the narratives of other buccaneers, many of whom were colleagues of Dampier. As a result, in 1729, with interest in Dampier unabated, Knapton decided to issue this collected edition, with three volumes devoted to Dampier himself, and a fourth containing Funnell's critical account of the Dampier voyage as well as the narratives of Cowley, Sharp, Wood and Roberts. Knapton used the latest editions of each of the four volumes with a new general title-page to produce the collected edition as it appears here; thus the first volume is in its "seventh edition, corrected" form, while the others are represented by third or fourth edition texts.

Mahmoud le Gasnevide, histoire orientale Fragment traduit de l'Arabe, avec des Notes

Rotterdam: Jean Hofhoudt, 1729. Octavo, woodcut vignettes; an attractive copy in contemporary sprinkled calf, professionally rebacked. First edition of this Oriental romance and utopian allegory by the economist Melon (d. 1738), an influential French intellectual, who, amongst other things, helped found a literary society under the protection of the Duc de la Force. His best known work was theHe became an important member of the Court, regularly consulted for advice on commerce and finance.Mahmoud, one of his earliest works, is an historical allegory which displays many of the classic traits of the utopian genre, in particular the spurious claim to have been translated from an Arabic original, and a Preface which gives a realistic frame to the work by introducing a sketchy history of the Caliphate. The work was quickly recognized as 'une satire de la régence' (NBG).This is an attractive copy, with the armorial bookplate of John West, first Earl de la Warr, eighteenth century English politician and soldier.

The History of the rise and fall of Masaniello the fisherman of Naples, containing an exact and impartial relation of the tumults and popular insurrections, that happened in that Kingdom (in the year 1647) on account of the tax upon fruits.

Davis- Green 1729 - Londres, Davis- Green, 1729. In 8 de [2]-XII-226-1 f. n. ch. [Attributes: Hard Cover]

Minor damp-staining from end of preface to page 22. The books original owner was one, Lemuel Pierson, of Southampton, located in Suffolk County, New York. It was purchased circa 1740 and remained in the same family for over two centuries. The author, Anthony Horneck was a German Protestant clergyman and scholar who made his career in England. He became an influential evangelical figure in London from the later 1670s, in partnership with Richard Smithies, curate of St. Giles Cripplegate. A student of the Bible and religious literature, and a casuist consulted in cases of conscience. he was well read in Arabic, Hebrew, and rabbinical literature. He wrote little of controversy, though he took an anti-Catholic stance during the reign of James II. His books are chiefly devotional, and went through many editions until 1730; some reprints appeared from 1846. This is the 11th and final original printing of his first written work. A well-preserved volume in very good condition, this interesting piece is a fine example of traditional Protestant devotional literature.
