Lewis, whose complete history was first published in 1729, over a century after its author's death, by the antiquary Hugh Thomas, perhaps using the text still extant in Harleian MS 4872 in the British Library. Like earlier Welsh historians, for instance Humphrey Llwyd (whose Breviary of Britayne is appended to the 1729 edition of Lewis's book), Lewis was reluctant to part with the much-criticized legends of ancient British kings, from Brutus the Trojan to King Arthur, as recorded by Geoffrey of Monmouth. Title continues: last king of the Britains ; and of the Kings of Scotland to Eugenev. As also A short Account of the Kings, Dukes, and Earls of Bretagne, 'till that Dukedom was united to the Crown of France, ending with the Year of our Lord 68 ; in which are several Pieces of Taliessin, an antient British Poet, and a Defence of the Antiquity of the Scotish Nation: With many other Antiquities, never before published in the English Tongue: With a Compleat Index to the Whole. By John Lewis, Esq ; Barrester at Law. Now first published from his original manuscript. To which is added, The breviary of Britayne, written in Latin by Humfrey Lhuyd, of Denbigh, a Cambre Britayne ; and lately englished by Thomas Twine, Gent.

        Mathematical Principles of Natural Philosophy

1729. NEWTON, Isaac. The Mathematical Principles of Natural Philosophy. Translated into English by Andrew Motte. To which are added, the Laws of the Moon's Motion, according to Gravity [by John Machin].London: Benjamin Motte, 1729.Two volumes.First edition in English of Newton?'s landmark Principia, published two years after his death, with scarce copper-engraved frontispieces and three headpieces by the translator Andrew Motte, 47 engraved folding geometric plates, and two folding tables.First published in Latin in 1687, "the Principia is generally described as the greatest work in the history of science. Copernicus, Galileo and Kepler had certainly shown the way; but where they described the phenomena they observed, Newton explained the underlying universal laws. The Principia provided the greatest synthesis of the cosmos, proving finally its physical unity. Newton showed that the important and dramatic aspects of nature that were subject to the universal law of gravitation could be explained, in mathematical terms, with a single physical theory. With him the separation of the natural and supernatural, of sublunar and superlunar worlds disappeared. The same laws of gravitation and motion rule everywhere; for the first time a single mathematical law could explain the motion of objects on earth as well as the phenomena of the heavens. The whole cosmos is composed of inter-connecting parts influencing each other according to these laws. It was this grand conception that produced a general revolution in human thought, equaled perhaps only by that following Darwin's Origin of Species… [Newton] is generally regarded as one of the greatest mathematicians of all time and the founder of mathematical physics" (PMM 161).Babson 20. Gray 23. Norman 1587.Frontispiece in Volume I mounted and remargined, likely supplied from another copy of the same edition; text and plates clean and fine. Expert restoration to extremities of contemporary calf binding. An exceptionally attractive copy.

Done Into English by Basil Kennet. Carefully Corrected, with Two Tables. To Which Are Added All the Large Notes of Mr. Barbeyrac, Translated From the Best Edition; Together with Large Tables to the Whole. Carefully Corrected. To Which is Now Prefixed Mr. Barbeyrac's Prefatory Discourse, Containing an Historical and Critical Account of the Science of Morality, and the Progress It has Made in the World, From the Earliest Times Down to the Publication of This Work. Done Into English by Mr. Carew. London: Printed for J. Walthoe, R. Wilkin, [et. al.], 1729. [xxiv], 316, 321-480, 477-878; [iv], 39, 44-88, [4], [22] pp. Pagination irregular. Complete, but Barbeyrac's prefatory discourse is misbound at rear of text. Main text in parallel columns. Folio (13" x 8-1/2"). Nineteenth-century three-quarter calf over cloth, gilt fillets to boards, raised bands, lettering piece and gilt ornaments to spine, endpapers renewed, hinges reinforced with cloth tape. Moderate rubbing to extremities with some wear to spine ends and corners, joints cracked, later owner bookplate to front pastedown. Woodcut head-pieces, tail-pieces and decorated initials. Moderate toning to text, light foxing in places. Early owner corrections in a miniscule hand, to passages in a few leaves, interior otherwise fresh. * Fourth English edition. In 1662 Pufendorf was appointed to the first modern professorship in natural law (at the University of Heidelberg). In 1670 he became professor of natural law at the University of Lund in Sweden. First published in 1672, De Jure Naturae et Gentium is his principal work and a landmark in the history of natural and international law. It proposed a thorough system of private, public, and international law based on natural law. Beginning with a consideration of fundamental legal ideas and their various divisions, Pufendorf proceeded to a discussion of the validity of customs, the doctrines of necessity and innate human reason. The work is significant in part because it developed principles introduced by Grotius and Hobbes. Unlike Hobbes, Pufendo.

Full speckled brown sheepskin contemporary. Back tooled raised florets 4. Part of title in red morocco. Caps threadbare. Upper joint open tail 1cm. 3 corners bumped and bare. Although the book is presented solely as a satirical story today with key and an allegory of the Regency, all the figures are in oriental names; Mahmoud is a true oriental tale and contains many notes on the history of the caliphs and the manners and customs of the Arabs; Mahmoud also contains no recipes in vogue in Europe writing a story, but his writing borrows its methods in historical narrative, we see the evolution of a conqueror. DU 29. NOVEMBRE 1729.

Paris: de l'Imprimerie Royale, 1729. - 20pp. Quarto. Contemporary inscription. Very minor foxing. Fine. A very rare decree confirming the privileges of the Compagnie des Indes. This Arrest was "prompted by the unloading from a Dutch boat coming from Alexandria and the public sale in Dunkirk, a free port, of a certain quantity of coffee. The interesting legal point is here raised as to the validity of the Company's privileges, in this case as regards its coffee monopoly, in a free port" - Maggs. Wroth does not cite any locations for this title, only mentioning that it had been reprinted in LE COMMERCE DE L'AMÉRIQUE (Avignon, 1764). From the library of Cardinal Etienne Charles de Lomenie de Brienne (1727-1794), Minister of Louis XVI, Archibishop of Toulouse and of Sens. A friend of Voltaire and a member of the Académie Française, Brienne wielded significant power as as head of the Finance Ministry, which earned him many enemies.       1729 - Extremely rare report on the Revolt of the Comuneros, the ideals that would forge the Independence a century later. N.d. [1729]. N.p. [Lima?] [bound after] Sommario di documenti autentici citati nel supplemento alle riflessioni e all' appendice de' portoghesi. parte prima. 1760. Genova. In 4to (180 mm x 125 mm). 2 ff. [blank] + 1 ff. + 136; 60 pp. Near contemporary grain long morocco, double gilt filets and interlacing fillets to boards, spine tolled, rubbed. Uniform browning, very good otherwise. First edition of the Copia del Ynforme, bound together with the first Italian translation. The Copia is exceedingly rare; we have been unable to trace any copies (not in WorldCat, CCPBE, JCB), except for the later edition, as part of the Colección General de Documentos (Madrid, Imprenta Real de la Gazeta, 1768/69). Angles y Gortari arrived in Paraguay in 1728 after being commissioned to investigate the Comunero Revolt; ostensibly, the revolt was based on the thought that the will of the King cannot be above the will of the common folk. The historical background is complex: in 1717 Reyes de Balmaceda was appointed as Governor of Paraguay. Soon after, complaints reached the Royal Audiencia of Charcas of his abusive conduct; Panamanian Jose de Antequera y Castro (1690 – 1731) was sent to study the case. In 1721, as a result of Antequera’s intervention, Reyes de Balmaceda was removed from his post –Antequera himself replacing Reyes in an arbitrary fashion- and a conflict emerged which included armies coming from Buenos Aires lead by Bruno Mauricio de Zabala and the retreat of the comunero forces. During the process, disobedience, partisanship and treason were common. In all, the revolt was unsuccessful and the participants executed with extreme prejudice, however the ideal of emancipation and rights for the people remained. This was one of the most important colonial attempts to reach the King requesting being heard and taken into account. These events would be well documented in a work by Pedro Lozano, ca. 1735 “Historia de las revoluciones de la Provincia del Paraguay en la América Meridional. Desde el año de 1721 hasta el de 1735”. Angles later wrote in 1731 the Ynforme del General sobre las causas delas diferencias en el Paraguay, en virtud del proceder de los Jesuitas en las misiones de este país. Provenance: this copy would appear to be the same offered by Otto Lange in 1938. Palau, 12657 & 12659. [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]

1729. PICART, Bernard. [4], 6 pp. Illustrations comprised of an etched title, engraved vignette on printed title and 42 etchings of lions on 36 leaves; 30 being full-page etched plates and 12 printed two etchings per page on 6 leaves. Oblong 4to., 197 x 255 mm, bound in full contemporary French crimson morocco, gilt triple fillet borders on covers, spine with gilt-floral ornaments in compartments with gilt-lettered title on beige morocco title-lable, a.e.g. Amsterdam: chez B. Picart, le Romain, à l'Etoile, 1729. |~||~||~||~||~| Suite of 42 etchings in their first state. This is an exceptional copy in contemporary French red morocco and from one of the great eighteenth-century bibliophiles, LeTellier de Courtanvaux. The engravings were all cut by master Dutch printmaker Bernard Picart; a number of the designs were based on lions depicted by painters such as Albrecht Dürer, Rembrandt van Rijn, Charles LeBrun, and others by Picart himself. Bernard Picart (Paris 1673 - Amsterdam 1733) was a well-known painter, draughtsman and engraver. He studied at the Académie Royale, worked in Paris for a time, then moved to Amsterdam, where he converted to the Protestant faith and opened a printing shop which issued some of the most refined and skilled graphic art produced in the Low Countries during the eighteenth century. The etchings attributed to Picart in the Recueil de Lion bear the inscription "ad vivam del." (drawn from life). The engraved title page designed and engraved by Picart incorporates a stone slab in a wooded forest with the title wording cut into the stone and the attributes of Hercules left in the foreground, i.e. the skin of the Nemean Lion draped over a rock and Hercules' long club set to rest against the title slab. A scarce album of prints, but almost never encountered in such spectacular condition. Without watermarks; the 36 leaves are all uniform laid paper. A reprint with the original date of 1728 was issued in Paris with paper watermarked 1742. PROVENANCE: Francois-César Le Tellier, Marquis de Courtanvaux, with his ex-libris on front inside cover and his oval ink stamp on printed title and final leaf. Le Tellier de Courtanvaux's sale - Paris, Nyon, 1782, Lot 595. Henri Gallice with his ex-libris; his sale Sotheby's . Henry Gallice (1853-1930) was the owner of the Chateau Perrier-Jouët which bore the Grandes Marques de Champagne and served as the president of the l'Association Viticole Champenoise from 1920-1931. He was also an "érudit bibliophile Champenois don't la superb collection cynégétique et sportive est universellement connue" was the author of "L'art darcherie, publié avec notes d'après un manuscrit du XVe siècle" Paris: Philippe Renouard, 1901.

Unlike Hobbes, Pufendo

Antonio Abri, Napoli 1729 - In-4, pp. (16), 353 [recte 359], (1 bianca). Legatura coeva in piena pergamena coeva. Tagli spruzzati. Bellissimo nitido esemplare impresso su carta forte. Edizione originale e unica.

[Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]
