Tanki yoryaku hikoben [trans.: Illustrated Instructions for the Correct Wearing of Armor]

Numerous woodcuts in the text. 23; 22; 21; 20; 25 folding leaves. Five vols. 8vo, orig. wrappers (rubbed, a few leaves with dampstaining), orig. block-printed title labels on upper covers, new stitching. Edo & Kyoto: Taheibei Noda, 1729. First edition and very rare; WorldCat locates only the 1837 edition. Murai (active 1729-54), was a mathematician and military tactician who wrote a well-known book on surveying - Ryochi shinan (1733) - which adopted European methods (see Smith, History of Mathematics, II, pp. 358, 359, & 614). This finely illustrated work was one of the earliest books on armor to be published in Japan. It describes all the elements of a samurai's armor and gives instructions on how to dress for battle. In the preface, the author laments that most samurai lack the knowledge of how to be properly equipped and protected when entering a battle. The author starts with undergarments, robes, trousers, foot gear, shin guards, armor for the body below the waist, hand guards, arm and shoulder armor, armor for the torso and upper body, how to tie the belt to secure the armor in place, shoulder guards, how to position the sword and its scabbard on the waist, head towels, helmets and masks (the masks are very scary), positioning the banners on poles of the soldiers and secured on their backs, spears, various other weapons like slings, clan vests to be worn over the armor, types of banners, ornaments for helmets, flotation devices, chairs for observing the battles, quivers, types of swords and daggers, armor to protect the throat, how to secure the helmet (many variations), how to dress quickly for sudden battles, etc. The final volume describes all the parts of the helmet and the front and back armor, how to take care of armor in inclement weather, etc. There is some limited worming, here and there, touching some text and images, but this is a nice set of an extremely rare work.

A Collection of Voyages. In Four Volumes. Containing: I. Captain William Dampier's Voyages round the World... New Holland &c. II. The Voyages of Lionel Wafer... III. A Voyage round the World: containing an Account of Capt. Dampier's Expedition into the South Seas in the ship St. George... By W. Funnell... IV. Capt. Cowley's Voyage round the Globe. V. Capt. Sharp's Journey over the isthmus of Darien, and expedition into the South-Seas. VI. Capt. Wood's Voyage through the streights of Magellan. VII. Mr. Roberts' Adventures and Sufferings amongst the Corsairs of the Levant...

London: Printed for James and John Knapton, 1729. Four volumes, octavo, with 63 plates, maps and coastal profiles (many folding); an attractive set in contemporary calf. The 1729 collected edition of Dampier, "considered by many to be the best edition" (Hill). Dampier's books were all but devoured by an enthusiastic reading public, meaning that the great majority of copies still in existence are very worn indeed, making this complete set in contemporary binding a rare survival. Dampier is best known as the first Englishman to land on the Australian continent, and along with his interesting observations on Shark Bay and the northwest coast of Australia his books are particularly good on the flora and fauna of the region (many of his bird, fish and flower discoveries are illustrated with charming woodcut illustrations). As James A. Williamson wrote in his introduction to the Argonaut Press's 1939 edition of the Voyage to New Holland, "Dampier's permanent service to his countrymen was to arouse their interest in the exploration of the Pacific. He did it so effectively that in the eighteenth century they took the lead in revealing the tropical islands and the coasts of Australia and New Zealand... ". The Australian emphasis should be seen in the wider context of Dampier's complete works as a major body of Pacific description, and of considerable importance for any study of the discovery and colonisation of the entire region. At the end of the seventeenth-century Dampier was petitioning the English and Scottish governments to colonise Panama as a stepping-stone to further exploration of the Pacific, leading to the ill-fated Darien colony: if Darien had succeeded, it is not an idle speculation to suggest that the British incursion into the Pacific might have taken place some 70 years earlier than Cook's famous voyages. And, of course, Dampier himself was bitterly disappointed by the fact that his ship HMS Roebuck became unseaworthy just at the point when he had hoped to sail for the east coast of New Holland.Dampier's first book was published in 1697, an account of his early voyaging in the Pacific and Indian Oceans, while his account of the famous voyage of HMS Roebuck appeared in two parts in 1703 and 1709. All of his works were issued by the enterprising published Knapton, who also issued the narratives of other buccaneers, many of whom were colleagues of Dampier. As a result, in 1729, with interest in Dampier unabated, Knapton decided to issue this collected edition, with three volumes devoted to Dampier himself, and a fourth containing Funnell's critical account of the Dampier voyage as well as the narratives of Cowley, Sharp, Wood and Roberts. Knapton used the latest editions of each of the four volumes with a new general title-page to produce the collected edition as it appears here; thus the first volume is in its "seventh edition, corrected" form, while the others are represented by third or fourth edition texts. Some moderate browning (as usual), two of the maps a bit creased; a very good set in contemporary calf, spines and joints restored with original backstrips retained, labels renewed, bindings showing wear at extremities but overall quite good.

Les Voyages de Glantzby dans les mers Orientales de la Tartarie: avec les Avantures surprenantes des Rois Loriman & Osmundar, Princes Orientaux...

Paris: Chez la Veuve Delaulne, 1729. Octavo, with a folding map; contemporary French sprinkled calf, spine banded and gilt, crimson morocco label. Early edition of an imaginary voyage to the Orient, purporting to be a translation from the Danish.Long recognised as one of the earliest imitations of Swift, most critics have also recognised this as one of the better attempts in the genre. Sailing from Copenhagen via the Cape of Good Hope the protagonist journeys past the newly discovered land of Japan, and into the imaginary lands of Norre and Arrimond, both situated on a land mass in the Bering Sea between latitudes 40° and 50°. Glanztby's adventures are numerous: he is party to a bloody revolution and its peaceful resolution, after which he assumes an ambassadorial role and journeys to the Court of China. A good copy lightly worn.

Rotterdam: Jean Hofhoudt, 1729. Octavo, woodcut vignettes; in contemporary sprinkled calf. First edition of this Oriental romance and utopian allegory by the economist Melon (d. 1738), an influential French intellectual, who, amongst other things, helped found a literary society under the protection of the Duc de la Force. His best known work was theHe became an important member of the Court, regularly consulted for advice on commerce and finance.Mahmoud, one of his earliest works, is an historical allegory which displays many of the classic traits of the utopian genre, in particular the spurious claim to have been translated from an Arabic original, and a Preface which gives a realistic frame to the work by introducing a sketchy history of the Caliphate. The work was quickly recognized as 'une satire de la régence' (NBG).This is an attractive copy, with the armorial bookplate of John West, first Earl de la Warr, eighteenth century English politician and soldier. Not in BL London, BN Paris - "Although passed over by the majority if the historians of mechanics, this work marks a significant step toward the elaboration of a modern manual of practical mechanics, suitable for engineers of various disciplines. On the theoretical plane, La Hire's treatise was already out of date at the time of its appearance because it ignored Newton's laws of dynamics... on the other hand... he furnished useful descriptions and put forth the suggestion following Desargues, of adopting an epicycloidal for gear wheels" (DSB).         The Mathematical Principles of Natural Philosophy... Translated... by Andrew Motte. To which are added, the lawes of the moon's motion, according to gravity. By John Machin... In two volumes.

London: Benjamin Motte, 1729. First edition in English of the Principia. The first edition was published in Latin in 1687 and "is generally described as the greatest work in the history of science. Copernicus, Galileo and Kepler had certainly shown the way; but where they described the phenomena they observed, Newton explained the underlying universal laws. The Principia provided the greatest synthesis of the cosmos, proving finally its physical unity. Newton showed that the important and dramatic aspects of nature that were subject to the universal law of gravitation could be explained, in mathematical terms, with a single physical theory. With him the separation of the natural and supernatural, of sublunar and superlunar worlds disappeared. The same laws of gravitation and motion rule everywhere; for the first time a single mathematical law could explain the motion of objects on earth as well as the phenomena of the heavens. The whole cosmos is composed of inter-connecting parts influencing each other according to these laws. It was this grand conception that produced a general revolution in human thought, equaled perhaps only by that following Darwin's Origin of Species... [Newton] is generally regarded as one of the greatest mathematicians of all time and the founder of mathematical physics" (PMM 161). Although this book appears in the rooms with some regularity, only six other copies in contemporary bindings which, like the present copy, were not rebacked, have appeared at auction in the last 35 years, the last being Doyle, November 25, 2013, lot 463, $68,750. The first book, De Motu Corporum (On the motion of bodies), applies the laws of motion to the behaviour of bodies in various orbits. The second book continues with the motion of bodies in fluids and with the behaviour of fluids themselves. In the third book De Mundi Systemate (On the system of the world) Newton applies the Law of Universal Gravitation to the motion of planets, the Moon and comets. Newton derives Kepler's laws of planetary motion from this system and shows how a range of phenomena are governed by the same set of natural laws, including the behaviour of Earth's tides and the precession of the equinoxes, although Newton failed to account fully for the irregularities in the Moon's motion caused by the gravitational influence of the Sun. This first English translation, published two years after Newton's death, was prepared by Andrew Motte (1696-1734). The son of the well-known printer Benjamin Motte, who printed Andrew Motte's Treatise on the mechanical powers (1727), as well as the present work, Motte was very briefly a lecturer on geometry at Gresham College. The translation is based on the 1726 third edition of the Latin text, edited by Henry Pemberton, and is dedicated to Sir Hans Sloane as President of the Royal Society. John Machin's attempt to rectify Newton's lunar theory is appended to the main work. Babson 20; Norman 1587; Wallis 23; I. B. Cohen, "Pemberton's translation of Newton's Principia, with notes on Mote's translation", Isis 54 (1963), 319-51. See PMM 161. Two volumes, 8vo (195 x 118 mm) pp. [38], 320, [2], 393, [13], viii, 71, [1], with 2 engraved frontispieces by A. Motte, 2 folding letterpress tables, 47 folding engraved plates, and 3 engraved head-pieces by Motte. The frontispiece to volume I shows the apotheosis of Newton, and quotes four lines from Halley's liminary verses to the original edition of Principia, that to volume II shows a pendulum and has two references to the text, one in the scholium generale. Contemporary calf, some very well done surface restoration to boards and spines (not rebacked), internally crisp and clean.

(4 ll.), 65, (5), 39, (1 blank), 40-63 pp. *** FIRST EDITION, later issue of this important and very rare manual on lacquer work, gilding, and varnish preparation. It was intended for cabinetmakers, woodworkers, painters, sculptors, metalworkers, illuminators, and other artisans who apply decorative coatings to wood, metal, marble, and paper surfaces. Stooter's manual is of great interest, not only for recording trade secrets that were rarely committed to paper, but for what it may reveal about craft techniques that entered Europe via Portuguese contacts with Japan, China, and India. Intrigued by the beautiful lacquer ware he saw being made in Lisbon and elsewhere in Portugal, Stooter set out to discover the craftsmen's methods and here presents his findings in considerable detail. The manual begins with a section on the kinds of wood—particularly those available in Brazil, Angola, and Portugal—suitable as a base for lacquer work. Following are sections on preparing various surfaces for varnish coatings, mixing varnishes, and polishing lacquer surfaces. On pp. 37-65, Stooter provides detailed recipes for nearly two dozen kinds of clear and colored varnishes. In a second section (pp. 1-39 of the second group), further recipes are offered along with detailed instructions for gilding silver, copper, and iron through hot and cold chemical methods (most involving the use of mercury). Appended to this copy are two undated supplements. In the first (pp. 40-55 of the second group), Stooter relates how, after having bound and distributed 50 copies of the book, he chanced upon a German-language work by "J. K." (published Nuremberg, 1707 in 4°) that offered further recipes and instructions for silvering mirrors. Distribution of the work was halted until this addendum, with index and errata for the original work, could be prepared and printed. Pages 56-63 consist of an additional addendum of various secrets in working with gesso that Stooter learned while on a return visit to Porto in 1731 and 1732. Innocêncio mentions later editions of Lisbon, 1786 and 1825, without precise information. All the editions appear to be very rare. Stooter, a native of Antwerp, was a diamond cutter and merchant in Lisbon for more than 26 years. He also wrote (in Portuguese) a very rare manual for gunsmiths, Spingardeiro …, published in Antwerp in 1719 and embellished with 82 engraved plates (see Monteverde 5257). The owner of this copy obviously read and used it. He has made several manuscript corrections to recipes (pp. 2, 14, 15, 27), and corrected the table of contents and several cross references. *** Innocêncio IV, 44-5 (without any information on the author, giving the title as Arte de fazer vernizes, and without date or collation); X, 363: calling for xvi pp. of preliminaries. Cf. Avila–Perez 7506, citing a Lisbon, 1825 edition and Monteverde 5255 and 5256, for two copies of the Lisbon, 1786 edition. Not in Azevedo-Samodães or Ameal. Porbase locates only a single copy, at the Biblioteca Nacional de Portugal. Copac repeats the British Library. Not in Melvyl, Iris, Orbis. We know of a copy at Harvard University's Houghton Library. Not located in NUC.

Tarih-i seyyah der beyan-i zuhur-i Agvaniyan ve sebeb-i inhidam-i bina-i devlet-i Sahan-i Safeviyan [A Traveller's Chronicle Concerning the Emergence of the Afghans and the Cause of the Collapse of the Safavid Dynasty.]

Istanbul: Dar al-Tiba'ah al-Ma'murah, 1142 AH [1729] - Octavo (215 × 152 mm). Contemporary dark red quarter morocco, marbled sides, catch-title (Tarih-i Agvan) to bottom edge in black ink. Housed in a black quarter morocco solander box by the Chelsea Bindery. Four Ottoman ownership stamps to ff. 1 and 21, later (1189 AH) ownership inscription to f. 1 by "Ahmad", possibly the owner of the seal directly below; additional inscriptions to f. 66 and verso of final blank. Minor loss to head and foot of spine with short split to head of front joint, earlier leaves with very faint damp-staining to bottom edge and slight finger-marking to bottom corners, very occasional light spotting to margins as usual, minute worm hole to gutter ff. [7]-10 and 72-97, old repair to f. 97v. with no loss of text, neat double incision to fore edge f. 66, ink-smudge to f. [5] r. and margin of f. 39 to no loss, f. 95 misbound between ff. 93 and 94. Overall a nice, crisp copy. A scarce title in a pleasing contemporary binding, this copy bearing several distinct Ottoman ownership seals yet with little real sign of wear. First edition in Turkish (printed with Arabic types) of this eyewitness account of the Afghan invasion of Persia in 1722 by Father Judasz Thaddeus Krusinksi (1675-1756), first published in French as Histoire de la dernière révolution de Perse in Paris, 1728. Krusinski, "the best known of the Polish Jesuits active in Iran" in the early 18th century, lived in Isfahan from 1707 to 1728 and again in the 1740s, serving as court translator, ambassador of French kings Louis XIV and XV and intermediary between the Safavids and the Papacy (Encyclopaedia Iranica). The Afghan invasion saw the Safavid ruler Shah Sultan Husayn executed and the capital Isfahan sacked, precipitating the eventual downfall of the once-great empire in 1736 following a brief period of Safavid reconquest. Originally composed in Latin, Tarih-i seyyah was translated into Turkish by the Ottoman diplomat Ibrahim Müteferrika and became only the third text to be printed on his new printing press, the first press established under Muslim auspices. Following a long struggle against conservative religious sentiment, Müteferrika was finally granted permission for his project by Sultan Ahmet III in 1729. The first book printed was Kitab-i Lügat-i Vankulu, an Arabic-Persian-Turkish dictionary based on the Sihah of al-Jawhari, with the second being Katib Çelebi's Tühfet ül-kibar fi esfar il-bihar (Concerning Naval Expeditions), followed by the present title in the same year. The press was discontinued 1742, with the consequence that any such "Turkish incunabula" are uncommon. Burrell 165 for the first edition and 448 for the first in English. Not in Blackmer or Atabey.         Scheepvaart in het Y, voor Amsterdam.Amsterdam, Abraham Allard, [ca. 1720/29]. Large engraving (image size: 49.5 x 58 cm) printed on 1 sheet, with the arms of Amsterdam at the head, below the title in a banderole with the publisher's information on the left, surrounded by 9 putti on and around clouds. In passepartout and framed (77 x 84 cm).

      - Koeman, AA 9, v.17 no. 13; not in De Groot & Vorstman. Engaging engraving of ships in the IJ (waterway) before Amsterdam, showing two galleons and two smaller ships in the foreground and Amsterdam with its harbour in the background. Amsterdam is depicted from 's Lands Zeemagazijn - then the arsenal of the Admiralty of Amsterdam and now the Dutch Maritime Museum - on the left and the Oosterkerk ("east church") on the right. The two galleons in the foreground could be either merchant or war vessels: since merchant ships also had to be well armed the two were sometimes used interchangeably. The two shown are three-masted with about 32 and about 18 cannons. The print was also issued in 1729 in Van der Aa's extraordinary La galerie agréable du monde, the most extensive map- and print-book ever published. With an old vertical fold just visible in the centre of the print, a horizontal fold hardly visible, minor wear where they cross and some minor ink smudges from the printing in the corners of the margins. Still a very good copy.
