Collegium curiosum ...

Miscellaneous Engravings in Color [Recueil D'Estampes D'Apres les Plus Beaux Tableaux et D'Apres les Plus Beaux Desseins qui sont en France]

Paris: Chez Basin, 1729-1742. Full Morocco. Fine. A set of spectacular hand-colored baroque wood engravings of mythological and allegorical scenes mostly. Large folio. Nine hand-colored copperplate engravings and mezzotints from an edition of Cabinet Crozat. Four of the plates are double sided. While this is far from the full complement of plates from Crozat's work, they are hand-colored, and meticulously so, and generally one does not encounter so. The paintings represented are "La Champestre", by Dominque Feti and from the Royal Collection, "Mars et Venus lies par l'Amour" by Paul Veronese from the Collection of the Duc D'Orleans, "Venus et Adonis" by Paul Veronese from the Cabinet de M. Dupille, "Portrait de Raphael" from the Royal Collection, "Erigone" by Guido Reni, "Venus Couchee" from the Palazzo Barberini in Rome, "Le Triomphe de Titus et de Vespasien" by Jules Romain from the Royal Collection, "Galatee" by Carle Maratte from the Collection of the Duc D'Orleans, and "Jupiter amoureux d"Antiope se transforme en Satire" by Titien in the Royal Collection. The collection might have been created by a print seller. There are many blank sheets upon which the compiler might have intended to add additional prints; there is evidence on only a single leaf that a print might have been removed. In any case, the binding is magnificent and for that reason, this collection deserves to remain as such. Full green Morocco ruled and lettered in gilt, with morocco doublures and silk endpapers. Even with some scuffs and wear on the binding, it is magnificent. The volume measures a massive 24.5 by 18 inches, or 62 by 49 cm.

Biblia sacra, cum universis Franc. Vatabli, [...] et variorum interpretum, annotationibus

Paris: Sumptibus Societatis, 1729-1745. Hardcover. Folio. 2 volumes. Volume I. pp. [4], 38, cxviii, [2], 856. Volume II. pp. [6], 830, 326. Latin text in two columns. Pages are generally clean with periodic mild to moderate age toning and occasional spots of light foxing. Title page to volume I is printed slightly off-center. A tear is very neatly sealed on p.95 (volume I). Bound in full period [spotted] calf with nicely gilt spines. Some wear present to extremities; small areas of darkening / discoloration to leather. Head and tail caps and outer hinges are neatly restored / strengthened. All edges are dyed red. An old institutional bookplate and a personal ownership ticket are present on the inside front cover. A new version of a Latin Bible published earlier in 1721 and based on R. Stephanus's 1545 edition of the Zurich Latin Bible. The text of the Vulgate and the new Latin translation produced by Leo de Juda and others (first published 1543) are printed in parallel columns. Stephanus included marginal notes which were taken during the lectures of French theologian Francois Vatable. The notes, however, appear to be colored by Stephanus's own religious opinions (See Darlow 6127) and they were subsequently condemned by the Theological Faculty of Paris. The preliminary sections of this edition include a "Chronologica sacra" with tables and an "Animadversiones in geographiam sacram" also with tables. These are heavy books; please inquire about postage. [Darlow & Moule 6261; Graesse I, p. 397].

Letter Signed ("Le Card. de Fleury) to Cardinal Corradini on matters relating to the Jansenists

[Paris?, 9 mai 1729. Folio. 7 pp. Tipped into a bound volumes with several other documents, engravings of the period, including engraved portraits of Cardinal Noailles, Louis XVI, a portrait of Fleury himself, of Phillippe d'OrlEans, regent of France, and a letter to Phillippe from a Carmelite order asking for charity. Full red morocco gilt, by SANGORSKI & SUTCLIFFE . A letter of great interest, relating to Jansenism and the reaction of the Church authorities to the challenge it posed. Fleury (1653-1743) was an extremely powerful advisor and minister to Louis XV, a member of l'AcadEmie FranÁaise. He wrote this immediately following the death of Cardinal de Noailles, the Archbishop of Paris who was closely associated with policy of the Papal Bull known as Unigenitus (1713), which had virtually banished Jansenists from the Church. In the years following the Bull, known as the period of 'appeal' because the Jansenists called for a new Church Council to resolve the issues, the clergy was divided. In his letter announcing the death of the Cardinal de Noailles, Fleury expresses his hopes for a period when Jansenism will diminish, and cites various cases of retraction among the dissidents. "

(Alexander) The Dunciad, Variorum. With the Prolegomena of Scriblerus.

London, Printed for A. Dod, 1729 . first edition, 4to., pp.[ii]+29+[3]+118+cxix-cxxiv, engraved vignette (ass with burden of books surmounted by owl) on title, contents in fresh state; well rebound in half calf antique, gilt, red morocco label Griffith 211; Foxon P771. First edition of the Dunciad Variorum, the version most often cited and read. Though the text of the poem was not changed greatly in length (1,014 lines compared with 920 lines in the editions of 1728) the size of the work was quadrupled by the addition of the "Prolegomena," apparatus criticus, notes and appendixes, in which Pope and his circle attacked his antagonists more directly and pungently than in the poem itself. The names of many of the dunces, previously left blank or indicated by initials, are here supplied.
