III, p.156). Esemplare puro, ampi margini (qualche fioritura della carta).

The text, however, was never completed and Eustachi's notes to the plates were lost except for the eight which had been published in his lifetime. The plates were inherited by Eustachi's assistant and were eventually deposited in the Vatican Library, where they were uncovered a century and a half later and published by the papal physician, Giovanni Maria Lancisi (see No. 687 ff.), who added his elucidations and included the previously published eight plates with Eustachi's commentary. In all, there are forty-seven plates. Although from an artistic standpoint they are not as well done as the anatomical plates of Vesalius, … [Click Below for Full Description]

EUSTACHIUS, Barthol. (ca. 1510-1574). -
Roma, Pagliarini, 1728. In-folio (35,8 x 24,5 cm.). P. pergamena coeva. Choulant-Frank, Anatomical Illustration, p. 202. Wellcome II, 536. Cf. Blake 139 e Garrison & M. 391: «These plates are more accurate than the work of Vesalius; Singer was of the opinion that had they appeared in 1552 Eustachius would have ranked with Vesalius as one of the founders of modern anatomy. He discovered the Eustachian tube, the thoracic duct, the adrenals and the abducens nerve, and gave the first accurate description of the uterus. He also described the cochlea, the muscles of the throat and the origin of the optic nerves». Second edition. The copper plates remained unpublished for over 160 years until they were rediscovered in the Vatican Library by Giovanni Maria Lancisi, the papal physician, who published them with his own commentaries in 1714. Only the two Rome editions were printed from the original copper plates. … [Click Below for Full Description]

Bartolomeo Eustachi
Rome, 1728. In Latin. Bound in the original pigskin binding. With some ink scribbles and other marks to the covers. Faint title visible to spine. Bumping to corners. Pigskin has split along front edge. Binding fairly tight, though the stitching has stretched. Ink splashes and previous owner's neat inscriptions to front endpaper. Minor browning to first few pages, although they remain legible. Liberally illustrated throughout with full-page anatomical drawings in great detail. Light foxing and browning throughout, though the pages remain legible and clear. Overall, this book is in remarkably good condition, given its age. The illustrations are very well rendered and accurate, and the binding has remained resilient. This is a particularly large book of folio size.

[Pope, Alexander]
[London]: Dublin, Printed, London Reprinted for A. Dodd, 1728. First edition. Engraved frontispiece (Griffith Variety 1 with "Dunci-" on second line of pendant). viii, [ii], 51, [1] pp. Collation: A-E^6 F^2. 12mo. Full red morocco gilt, a.e.g. by Riviere. First edition. Engraved frontispiece (Griffith Variety 1 with "Dunci-" on second line of pendant). viii, [ii], 51, [1] pp. Collation: A-E^6 F^2. 12mo. The distinguished Hagen-Pforzheimer-Slater copy of the first edition of Pope's satirical masterpiece, a mock-epic reply to his critics (primarily Lewis Theobald) and other hack writers, as well as a broader critique of George II and Walpole. Published anonymously under a misleading imprint suggesting a Dublin first edition (which does not exist). Editions followed in 1729 (Dunciad Variorum), 1742 (A New Dunciad), and 1743 (Dunciad in four books). This 12mo impression is the first and precedes the 8vo printing of the same year. Bound with the second edition of Edmund Curll's Key, which spells out Pope's allusions and provides full names where Pope only supplies a first initial. Thus the close of the first stanza ("Still Dunce the second reigns like Dunce the first?") is glossed as "Meaning Mr. Theobald succeeds Mr. Settle, if he has not a worse Meaning," which of course he has, referring to the accession of George II the previous year. Also bound with the first edition of The Progress of Dullness, which takes Pope's original title to The Dunciad and the one used to announce a sequel on the final leaf of the first edition. Fielding, Henry
London: John Watts, 1728. First edition. [viii], 82, [2] pp. 8vo. Disbound. First three leaves detached. In a custom gray card folder. First edition. [viii], 82, [2] pp. 8vo. Fielding's First Play. First edition of the 20-year-old Fielding's first play and his second surviving publication. "Fielding's career as dramatist began auspiciously enough when, as an unknown author in his twentieth year, his first play, the comedy Love in Several Masques, was staged by Cibber at Drury Lane-an extraordinary favour due probably to the influence of Lady Mary, to whom Fielding dedicated the published version" (ODNB). In the Preface Fielding acknowledges the difficulty of competing for audiences with Gay's Beggar's Opera and Vanburgh's The Provok'd Husband. Love in Several Masques would run for only 4 nights, and Fielding would shortly depart for Holland to study, his next theatrical works not appearing until 1730. Cross III, p. 290

Seutter Matthias (1678 - 1757) Augsburg
Artist: Seutter Matthias ca ; issued in: Augsburg; date: ca1728 - - technic: Copper print; - colorit: original colored; - condition: Very good; - size (in cm): 49 x 57; - description: Map shows Lombardia with Milano and Liguria with Genua; - vita of the artist: Matthias Seutter (1678- 1757) Augsburg was the son of a goldsmith in Augsburg. In 1697, Seutter began his studies in Nuremberg and subsequently worked in the publishing house of Jeremias Wolff in Augsburg. In 1710, he established his own publishing house and print shop. The Seutter publishing house produced a great number of maps, atlases, and globes. However, very few original maps were printed there, as Augsburg at that time had no university and no connection to the fields of mathematics or the natural sciences. Seutter therefore copied the work of other cartographers, making his own engravings based on their models. Over 500 maps were produced in his studio. Seutter's most well-known works are the 1725 "Geographical Atlas or an Accurate Depiction of the Whole World" ("Atlas Geographicus oder Accurate Vorstellung der ganzen Welt") with 46 maps, the 1734 "Large Atlas" ("Grosser Atlas") with 131 maps, and the 1744 pocket atlas "Small Atlas" ("Atlas minor") with 64 maps. Matthäus Seutter died in 1757. Seutter's son Albrecht Karl, his son-in-law Conrad Tobias Lotter, and his business partner Johann Michael Probst ran the printing business for five more years.

Four Items Relating to the Proposal to Encourage a Volunteer Navy [Anti-Pressing]. 1. Abstract of the Bill for the Encouragement of Seamen, to Enter Voluntarily into His Majesty's Service. 2. A Letter From a Gentleman of the City of London, to a Member of Parliament, Relating to the Bill for Encouraging Seamen to Enter Voluntarily to Serve in the Navy. 3. To the Honourable the Representatives of Great Britain in Parliament Assembled, the Following Proposal is Most Humbly Offer'd. 4. Observations on Articles for the Encouraging of Voluntier-Sailors, Published Some Months Since in a News-Paper. J. Roberts and others, 1728. 4 items, 4to and 3 single broadsheets. pp. 3: 11: 3: 1. Nice fresh copies, the first item a little wormed in the left hand margin, the third item with a closed cut to the left margin. The Royal Navy was almost entirely crewed by pressed men who were irregularly paid; this bill and case was an attempt to convert the Navy into a volunteer force. However when carefully studied, it did nothing to rectify the poor pay and conditions "...out of every six months, two months shall be punctually paid to Voluntiers, but there is no provision made for the payment of the four remaining months."
