[Attributes: First Edition]

Robert Morris - An Essay in Defence of Ancient Architecture - 1728 UK first edition published by D. Browne, W. Bickerton, K. Pote and J. Walthoe Complete with the engraved frontispiece, fourteen plates, a table and a page of ads to the rear. The book is reasonably firmly bound in eighteenth century half calf, with brown paper covered boards, there is some splitting at the spine and much rubbing, bumping and staining. The text block is quite heavily age toned with some foxing and staining to all pages, more heavily so to the earlier and later leaves. Morris's first book, in which he is quite scathing in his criticism of the modern baroque style, comparing it unfavourably with buildings constructed on ancient lines. However, he is very happy to lavish praise on the quite recently deceased greats, Inigo Jones and Sir Christopher Wren. [Attributes: First Edition]

CELLINI Benvenuto
[1728?]. 4to (257 x 180m.) [16], 318, [2(blank)]p., title printed in red and black, contemporary Italian vellum, red morocco label, some leaves a little soiled at edges, binding somewhat grubby Colonia, Pietro Martello [Naples, 1728?] First edition of this important work which had a considerable impact on men of letters and artists. Antonio Cocchi (1695-1758) lurks behind the pseudonym Sebastiano Artopolita who published the book from the autograph manuscript which had since the late 17th century belonged to the Cavalcanti family of Florence, and from which various manuscript copies had been made and were in circulation. Cocchi had been to London in the mid-1720s and would have come within the circle of those known to Burlington like Paolo Rolli (1687-1765) translator of Milton and established in London from 1715. In 1771 the work was published in English in the translation of the Irishman Thomas Nugent, and in 1803 Goethe's German translation appeared. Richard Boyle, earl of Burlington, and the great amateur of architecture, was in fact nominated to the Order of the Garter on 18 May 1730 and he was installed as such a month later on 18 June. However here he is described on the title-page as being Knight of the Garter, which in [1728], the date normally given to the book, he could not have been. The use of the false imprint 'In Colonia per Pietro Martello' is an old trick well established in the 17th century for books which are either contrefaçons or somehow of questionable content likely to offend. It might be suggested (as indeed it was by Cicognara) that [Florence] is th … [Click Below for Full Description]

Jacques Estienne, Francois Babuty
France: Jacques Estienne Francois Babuty. Our Blue Ridge Home Welcomes you And thanks you for stopping by Description Antique book Explication Du Mystere De La Passion De Notre-Seigneur Jesus-Christ - The Passion of Christ. Book is dated 1728 (in Roman numerals), was published by Chez Jacques Estienne with Francois Babuty. It has some writing inside the front cover, written most likely with a quill pen and ink. I cannot really make out the words, but it looks like "celis re aparticut amorie cenaro de laurel" - on the opposite page there is a name which looks very much like Auguste Renard or Renoir and if it is, this book is worth WAY more than my asking price. However, I cannot attest to the name, it could be any Auguste of the period. I have shown you a photo of the signature. The book is written entirely in French. Printed on the first inside page, along with the name and authors names are the words "Suivant la Concorde. Premiere Partie" and other words. I am fairly certain the cover is sheepskin, given the date of the book. I have never been able to find another book like this, not even on the site that sells books by Jacques Estienne. You can find Part Two, but this is Part One. My opinion is that not only is this book rare, but it is scarce and possibly the only one or one of only a few remaining in existence. It shows the age, by the yellowing of the pages and wear to the cover and there are stains as well. However, given the fact that this book is almost 300 years old, I would say it has held up rather well. On the side of the binding is printed "Jesus Crvcif" in gol … [Click Below for Full Description]
