HOWARD (Sir Robert)
London Printed for the Company no date c, 1728. 12mo, 152 x 95 mms., pp. [4] 5 - 96], recently recased in quarter brown morocco, cream boards, gilt spine; title-page a little soiled, but a good copy. The playwright and politician Sir Robert Howard (1626–1698) seems to have negotiated the period before the Restoration with enough skill to acquire a small fortune, but his private life was enough to earn him the soubriquet "Sir Positive At-All," an arrogant and foolish knight in Thomas Shadwell's play, Sullen Loveers. The Committee was first performed in 1662 and proved to be the most popular of all his plays. The imprint is false, and ESTC suggests that the volume was probably printed in The Hague for T. Johnson. who might have moved to Rotterdam by 1728. Copies in BL; Folger, Harvard, McMaster, Memphis; and four European libraries. [Attributes: Hard Cover]

Robert Morris - An Essay in Defence of Ancient Architecture - 1728 UK first edition published by D. Browne, W. Bickerton, K. Pote and J. Walthoe Complete with the engraved frontispiece, fourteen plates, a table and a page of ads to the rear. The book is reasonably firmly bound in eighteenth century half calf, with brown paper covered boards, there is some splitting at the spine and much rubbing, bumping and staining. The text block is quite heavily age toned with some foxing and staining to all pages, more heavily so to the earlier and later leaves. Morris's first book, in which he is quite scathing in his criticism of the modern baroque style, comparing it unfavourably with buildings constructed on ancient lines. However, he is very happy to lavish praise on the quite recently deceased greats, Inigo Jones and Sir Christopher Wren. [Attributes: First Edition]

NEWTON (Isaac)
Paris, G. Martin, J.B. Coignard, H.L. ¶ Babson 214 "Newton was thus able to "prove" that the Jews were more ancient than the Greeks, as indicated in biblical chronology" - Quérard Fr. litt. VI.406.

LA RUE, Jean Baptiste de.
Second issue of the first edition (1728) of "the most accurate and complete work on the subject of stone-cutting for building" (BAL). An abundantly and clearly illustrated manual on cutting stone for architectural construction, with meticulously detailed instructions. The main text is divided into five parts covering doorways and entry vaults, other vaults, pendentives (sections of domes), rampant (asymmetrical) arches and spiral stairs. All five parts are extensively illustrated, mostly with one or two plates for every chapter, in total 120 full-page plates and 1 large folding plate (plate size 47.5 x 61 cm) showing plans, cross-sections and views of gates, doorways, halls, tunnels, vaults, domes, corridors, niches, windows, staircases, etc. along with some measuring tools. The present copy is said to be on large-paper: it is in any case about the same size as the BAL copy, giving it generous margins. With an 18th-century manuscript bookplate, partly torn away. The large folding plate is somewhat browned and tattered, with small tears around the edges (1 running into the image and 2 crudely repaired with tape, mostly in the margins), a couple text leaves are also browned, an occasional further plate or text leaf shows minor, mostly marginal browning or spots and the last few leaves have a marginal restoration in the upper outside corner, but the book is otherwise in good condition. The binding has been rebacked and the flaking leather stabilized, but most of the gold-tooled spine is clear and the book is now structurally sound. An essential source for the history of stone … [Click Below for Full Description]

Heirs of Hippocrates [324 (ed. 1714) : "With the intention of publishing an anatomical text, Eustachi had completed the drawings for his work and the plates had been engraved by 1552. The text, however, was never completed and Eustachi's notes to the plates were lost except for the eight which had been published in his lifetime. The plates were inherited by Eustachi's assistant and were eventually deposited in the Vatican Library, where they were uncovered a century and a half later and published by the papal physician, Giovanni Maria Lancisi (see No. 687 ff.), who added his elucidations and included the previously published eight plates with Eustachi's commentary. In all, there are forty-seven plates. Although from an artistic standpoint they are not as well done as the anatomical plates of Vesalius, … [Click Below for Full Description]

First edition in English; first printed in Leiden in 1727, as Matheseos universalis elementa. "This work, translated into Dutch (1728) and English (1752 [sic]), is of didactic rather than original merit, but it was significant for its invitation to mathematicians to elucidate systematically Newton's Universal Arithmetick, which 'sGravesande exemplified by his own explanation of two passages from Newton's book. 'sGravesande found the lighthearted treatment of infinitesimals and the infinite in Bernard de Fontenelle's Elemens de la geometrie de l'infini (Paris, 1727) unacceptable, and he maintained his objections in the Journal litteraire against Fontenelle's rejoinder (1730)." â€" DSB V, p. 510. Here he presented his poems to Marcus Aurelius, who was so pleased with them that he gave the author a piece of gold for each line, took him into favor and pardoned his father. Oppian subsequently returned to his native country, but died of the plague shortly afterwards, at the early age of thirty. His contemporaries erected a statue in his honor, with an inscription which is still extant, containing a lament for his premature death and a eulogy of his precocious genius" (wikipedia). Also included is the first Italian translation of the long poem on hunting, which, however, was written by another man who called himself Oppian (Oppian of Apamea), apparently after the "real" Oppian. This work was ".dedicated to the emperor Caracalla, so that it must have been written after 211. It consists of about 2150 lines, an … [Click Below for Full Description]

Jacques Estienne, Francois Babuty
France: Jacques Estienne Francois Babuty, 1728. Our Blue Ridge Home Welcomes you And thanks you for stopping by Description Antique book Explication Du Mystere De La Passion De Notre-Seigneur Jesus-Christ - The Passion of Christ. Book is dated 1728 (in Roman numerals), was published by Chez Jacques Estienne with Francois Babuty. It has some writing inside the front cover, written most likely with a quill pen and ink. I cannot really make out the words, but it looks like "celis re aparticut amorie cenaro de laurel" - on the opposite page there is a name which looks very much like Auguste Renard or Renoir and if it is, this book is worth WAY more than my asking price. However, I cannot attest to the name, it could be any Auguste of the period. I have shown you a photo of the signature. The book is written entirely in French. Printed on the first inside page, along with the name and authors names are the words "Suivant la Concorde. Premiere Partie" and other words. I am fairly certain the cover is sheepskin, given the date of the book. I have never been able to find another book like this, not even on the site that sells books by Jacques Estienne. You can find Part Two, but this is Part One. My opinion is that not only is this book rare, but it is scarce and possibly the only one or one of only a few remaining in existence. It shows the age, by the yellowing of the pages and wear to the cover and there are stains as well. However, given the fact that this book is almost 300 years old, I would say it has held up rather well. On the side of the binding is printed "Jesus Crvcif" … [Click Below for Full Description]
