Jacques Estienne, Francois Babuty
France: Jacques Estienne Francois Babuty. Our Blue Ridge Home Welcomes you And thanks you for stopping by Description Antique book Explication Du Mystere De La Passion De Notre-Seigneur Jesus-Christ - The Passion of Christ. Book is dated 1728 (in Roman numerals), was published by Chez Jacques Estienne with Francois Babuty. It has some writing inside the front cover, written most likely with a quill pen and ink. I cannot really make out the words, but it looks like "celis re aparticut amorie cenaro de laurel" - on the opposite page there is a name which looks very much like Auguste Renard or Renoir and if it is, this book is worth WAY more than my asking price. However, I cannot attest to the name, it could be any Auguste of the period. I have shown you a photo of the signature. The book is written entirely in French. Printed on the first inside page, along with the name and authors names are the words "Suivant la Concorde. Premiere Partie" and other words. I am fairly certain the cover is sheepskin, given the date of the book. I have never been able to find another book like this, not even on the site that sells books by Jacques Estienne. You can find Part Two, but this is Part One. My opinion is that not only is this book rare, but it is scarce and possibly the only one or one of only a few remaining in existence. It shows the age, by the yellowing of the pages and wear to the cover and there are stains as well. However, given the fact that this book is almost 300 years old, I would say it has held up rather well. On the side of the binding is printed "Jesus Crvcif" in gol … [Click Below for Full Description]

HUTCHESON, Francis.
London: Printed by J. Darby and T. Browne, for John Smith and William Bruce, Booksellers in Dublin, and sold by J. Osborn and T., 1728. London: Printed by J. Darby and T. Browne, for John Smith and William Bruce, Booksellers in Dublin, and sold by J. Osborn and T. Longman and S. Chandler,, 1728. With Illustrations on the Moral Sense. Octavo (197 x 116 mm). Contemporary calf, gilt motifs to spine compartments with later morocco label. Final advertisement leaf and pasted errata present. Slight wear to spine ends and tips, joints beginning to split but still firm, inked mathematical jotting on rear cover, a few trivial interior blemishes and instances of miniscule worming. A very good copy. First edition. The philosopher Francis Hutcheson (1694-1746), a seminal figure in the Scottish enlightenment, wrote the work with the aim to refute the arguments of John Clarke, who had contended that benevolence is the result of self-love. Hutcheson respected his adversary, indeed stating in the preface that Clarke's deductions "seem'd more ingenious than any which [he] ever yet saw in print", yet instead argued that benevolence was entirely separate from self-love, coming instead from a sense of public service. The essay, which underwent seven London and Dublin editions by 1769, proved an important influence on David Hume's Treatise of Human Nature. Provenance: Contemporary bookplate of John Smith de Burgh, 11th Earl of Clanricarde (1720-1782), late 19th-century bookplate of Auchlochan country house; note of purchase signed Michael Mackin's and dated 1828 to front free endpaper, late 18 … [Click Below for Full Description]

This work remains one of the most valuable contemporary printed sources on Newton, the account of a close friend. The work also includes a poem on Sir Isaac Newton by Richard Glover (1712-1785, poet and Member of Parliament, written in Glover's 16th year), Pemberton's introduction on Newton's method of reasoning in philosophy, and a long list of subscribers. ERASME
"Prima edizione". Cfr. Cordier “Bibliogr. Sinica”,I, pp.918-19 - Biographie Universelle,XLVI, pp. 382-82.

Choulant-Frank, Anatomical Illustration, p. 202. Wellcome II, 536. Cf. Blake 139 e Garrison & M. 391: «These plates are more accurate than the work of Vesalius; Singer was of the opinion that had they appeared in 1552 Eustachius would have ranked with Vesalius as one of the founders of modern anatomy. He discovered the Eustachian tube, the thoracic duct, the adrenals and the abducens nerve, and gave the first accurate description of the uterus. He also described the cochlea, the muscles of the throat and the origin of the optic nerves». Second edition. The copper plates remained unpublished for over 160 years until they were rediscovered in the Vatican Library by Giovanni Maria Lancisi, the papal physician, who published them with his own commentaries in 1714. PICART (Bernard) ; BERNARD (Jean Frédéric).
Amsterdam, J.F. Bernard, 1728 - 1743. [Click Below for Full Description]

London: printed, and Dublin re-printed by S. Powell, for P. Crampton, and T. Benson, [Dublin], 1728. 172 x 97 mm. (6 3/4 x 3 3/4"). xv, [v], 216 pp. First Dublin Edition (printed the same year as the First Edition). Contemporary polished calf, raised bands, red morocco label. Title page with ink ownership inscription of Jo. Ballantyne, dated 1732. ESTC N9373. Short crack to head of front joint, leather on spine a bit crackled, extremities a little rubbed, but the binding sturdy and not displeasing, and A FINE COPY INTERNALLY, quite clean, fresh, and rather bright. In this essay, moral philosopher Francis Hutcheson discusses the motives for altruistic acts, attributing such benevolence to a sense of the public good and of honor. He refutes a contemporary's claim that such behavior is selfishly motivated by an individual's desire to avoid feelings of distress at the suffering of others, rather than a feeling of compassion for the sufferer. As DNB explains, Hutcheson (1694-1746) argued that "there are different classes of desires; that the desire to assist the afflicted or distressed or to act for the benefit of the public is entirely different from the desire to seek happiness or satisfaction or pleasure for oneself. He connected the desire to act in a spirit of kindness or benevolence to a public sense; this was a new sense, introduced together with a sense of honour for the first time in the Essay." According to the Internet Encyclopedia of Philosophy, "Hutcheson's importance comes from his theories of human nature, which include an account of an innate care and concern for … [Click Below for Full Description]

Light offsetting from engravings, which are lightly foxed with some having a few small stains. Occasional minor ink and pencil marginalia. Ink initials and red ink stamp on verso of title page. A very good, large copy. "Dr. Pemberton studied under Boerhaave, preparedthe Fifth London Pharmacopoeia and was invited by Newton to edit the third (1726) edition of the Principia. This study of Newton's philosophy is interesting as being the account of a close friend. The preface contains the author's recollections of Newton, especially in his old age. There is also a poem on Sir Isaac by Richard Glover (poet and M.P., 1712-1785) written in his 16th year; the author's introduction on Newton's method of reasoning in philosophy; and a long list of subscribers" (Babson). John Pine (1690-1756) "...was our best native engraver during the first half of the century. His Horace...possesses the delightful unity that such [engraved] books always have. Its strokes may well have influenced Baskerville and Bodoni in their type design.
