CASTRONI Benedetto Maria (1668-1748)
GIOVANNI BATTISTA AICCARDO, 1728. La "horographia" in senso stretto viene definita "doctrina describendarum linearum in qualibet superficie, quibus lucente sole, tamquam in speculo, omnes tum annuae, tum diu … [Click Below for Full Description]

COLBECK, Jo[seph]
Sprotbrough, 1728. Sprotbrough,, 1728.. Survey'd for Godfrey Copley Esq. by Jo. Colbeck Ano. Dom. 1728. Large manuscript survey, fine original hand-colour, on two pieces of vellum, joined, some dust soiling. Large and detailed eighteenth century survey of the Copley Estate and its environs in the West Riding of Yorkshire. Surrounding the map are several tables providing information upon the owners of the land, outlined in the survey, together with table denoting the various parishes that bounded the estates. Numerous pencil sketches abound with deer depicted in 'New Park', the Sprotbrough Hall to right of Sprotbrough, and divisions within the fields. The plan is bounded at to the south by the River Dunn. Godfrey Copley (1706-1761), had inherited Sprotbrough Hall and estate after his father Lionel Copley passed away in 1719; who himself have inherited the estate in 1709 after the demise the 2nd Baronet Godfrey Copley (1653-1709), whom had built Sprotbrough Hall, in the late seventeenth century. The 2nd Baronet name would be immortalised by the Copley Medal. Instituted in 1731 by the Royal Society - after a bequest of £100 in Copley's will - the medal is award annually for "outstanding achievements in research in any branch of science". It would appear that the surveyor of the map, Joseph Colbeck was in the employ of Godfrey Copley - as he was named in two documents housed within the National Archives at Kew: Steward to Godfrey Copley, in 1749, and 1759. Scale: (approx.) 13 inches to statute mile. National Archives: DD/CROM/6/7; DD/CROM/6/8.

LA VARENNE
per Giovanni de' Paoli, 1728. In-24 gr. Cfr. Benporat "Storia della gastronomia italiana", pp. 184-89 - Westbury, p. 130 - Bitting, p. 276 un'ediz. del 1715. Esemplare con barbe, ben conservato.

Manuscript; Wanton, Joseph
1728. A Rhode Island Debt Claim from 1728 [Manuscript]. Wanton, Joseph [1705-1780]. [Autograph Legal Document, Signed, Bristol, Rhode Island, July 5, 1728]. Single 12-1/4" x 7-1/2" leaf, franked below signature, docketed on verso ("Joseph Wanton's Release"). Light browning, horizontal and vertical creases, wax seal at signature, some separation along fold lines. $950. * This document certifies that Nathanial Southworth, Jr., has transferred land and money to Wanton to settle a debt. Wanton was a successful Newport, Rhode Island merchant who was involved with privateers during the French and Indian wars. He was also one of the original trustees of the school that eventually became Brown University. He served as Governor of Rhode Island from 1769-1775, but was removed from office for refusing to swear an oath of loyalty to the Continental Congress. He had frequent business dealings with the Southworth family, prominent residents of Middleborough, MA.

Erfurth, Johann Michael Funcke, 1723, 1728. Folio (214 x 342 mm). 3 vols. bound in one. (4), 120 (instead of 124) pp. (2), 142 pp. 172, (4) pp. Two title pages printed in red and black. With a total of 97 (instead of 98) half-page woodcuts in the text. Period style dark brown calf, elaborately gilt decorated spine and boards, red morocco spine label, raised bands, marbled endpapers. First editions of three separately issued parts of the very scarce "newly-opened amphitheater", comprising the America, Asia, and Turkey volumes. The exceptional large woodcuts show the native inhabitants of the various parts of the world. Of special interest is the rare volume dedicated only to Ottoman society, as well as that on Asia: together, they cover the Islamic countries of the early modern period, including details on the Arabian Peninsula. Among the illustrations are various Muslim clerics, Northern Arabians and desert Arabians in Bedouin costume, coffee salesmen, sweetmeats salesmen, and a Turkish gentleman carrying the Qur'an on his head, as well as Persians, the Sultan, Janissaries, archers, dancers, etc. The Asia volume, produced later, repeats a single illustration but contains much new matter on Arabia, including a discussion of the Muslim religion, the Qur'an, ablutions performed with sand, and the trade in incense, coffee, and spices, as well as pearl fishing in Bahrain (p. 54). The America volume covers the discovery and exploration of America, with woodcut illustrations including portraits of Columbus, Vespucci, Magellan, and 30 depictions of Native Americans from throughout … [Click Below for Full Description]

Jacques Estienne, Francois Babuty
France: Jacques Estienne Francois Babuty. Our Blue Ridge Home Welcomes you And thanks you for stopping by Description Antique book Explication Du Mystere De La Passion De Notre-Seigneur Jesus-Christ - The Passion of Christ. Book is dated 1728 (in Roman numerals), was published by Chez Jacques Estienne with Francois Babuty. It has some writing inside the front cover, written most likely with a quill pen and ink. I cannot really make out the words, but it looks like "celis re aparticut amorie cenaro de laurel" - on the opposite page there is a name which looks very much like Auguste Renard or Renoir and if it is, this book is worth WAY more than my asking price. However, I cannot attest to the name, it could be any Auguste of the period. I have shown you a photo of the signature. The book is written entirely in French. CHIUSOLE di Roveredo, Adamo.
, . . Cicognara 978; Morazzoni, p. 233; Schlosser-Magnino, p. 6832. First and only edition of an extensive Italian poem on the history and techniques of painting, by Count Adamo Chiusole (1728-1787). A second issue with the date 1769 is mentioned by Morazzoni. Count Ciusole was a rather well-known painter himself and wrote several works on painting and other art historical subjects. After the dedicatory poems to members of the Venetian noble family Correr and the introduction follow the eight books of the Art of painting: Il desegno (on design), Il colorito (on colouring), la prospettiva (on perspective, 4 books, pp. 78-97), l'inventzione (on invention) and le diverse maniere dei pittori (on the different ways or manners of painting). No less than 87 painters are mentioned and discussed, making the poem a kind of who's who of the art of painting, including many Italian artists (including Mantegna, Del Sarto, Cimabue, Giotto, Da Vinci, Rafael, Titian, Tintorretto and Vasari), but also foreign ones (including Dürer, Rubens, Van Dyck, Rembrandt and Callot). In very good condition and wholly untrimmed, with deckles intact, point holes preserved and some bolts unopened, with only a tiny marginal worm hole in the corner of a few leaves. Binding also very good, with only a couple light water stains.

VICO, Giambattista.
Venice: Cristoforo Zane, 1728. Octavo (147 x 80 mm). Contemporary sheep, twin spine labels lettered in gilt, spine elaborately gilt with raised bands, edges sprinkled red. Head of spine and top edges of boards repaired, gutter of front free endpaper repaired with Japanese tissue. Some patches of wear to boards, corners bumped, contents lightly foxed with occasional instances of mild dampstain, overall a very good copy. Engraved headpieces. 3 plates, of which 2 folding, to pp. 90-3. First edition of Vico's autobiography, argued by Croce to be "the application of the Scienza Nuova to the life of its author, the course of his own individual history" (p. 266), printed as pages 145-256 in the first volume of Calogerà's Raccolta d'opusculi scientifici e filologici, a quarterly miscellany. "A Proposal to the Scholars of Italy", written by Count Gian Artico di Porcía in 1721 and printed in this volume as pages 127-43, encouraged intellectual figures "to write their autobiographies for the edification of young students and with a view to the reform of school curricula and methods. This proposal, animated by a desire 'for the advancement of learning in Italy our illustrious fatherland', is followed by much the longest article in the volume, the autobiography of Giambattista Vico, which is offered as a model While he was waiting for [The New Science] to go to press, [Vico] composed Part A of his autobiography and sent it to Porcía's Roman agent Abbé Esperti, who forwarded it to Porcía on June 23. Nicolas De FER (1646-1720 circa)
Rara. Nice example of De Fer's wall map of the world, first published in 1700. The text notes that the map is a reduction of De Fer's 4 sheet wall map of the world, first issued in 1695. De Fer states that this map is the first map to be prepared based upon the astronomical observations of the Royal Academy of Sciences. In fact, it would appear that different sources entirely have been consulted for California, Japan and Australia. Australia is shown as substantially incomplete and still attached to new Guinea. New Zealand appears in partial outline. The conjectural land bri … [Click Below for Full Description]

Printed on the first inside page, along with the name and authors names are the words "Suivant la Concorde. Premiere Partie" and other words. I am fairly certain the cover is sheepskin, given the date of the book. I have never been able to find another book like this, not even on the site that sells books by Jacques Estienne. You can find Part Two, but this is Part One. My opinion is that not only is this book rare, but it is scarce and possibly the only one or one of only a few remaining in existence. Browne, for John Smith and William Bruce, Booksellers in Dublin, and sold by J. Osborn and T. Longman and S. Chandler,, 1728. Octavo (197 x 116 mm). Contemporary calf, gilt motifs to spine compartments with later morocco label. Final advertisement leaf and pasted errata present. Slight wear to spine ends and tips, joints beginning to split but still firm, inked mathematical jotting on rear cover, a few trivial interior blemishes and instances of miniscule worming. A very good copy. First edition. The philosopher Francis Hutcheson (1694-1746), a seminal figure in the Scottish enlightenment, wrote the work with the aim to refute the arguments of John Clarke, who had contended that benevolence is the result of self-love. Hutcheson respected his adversary, indeed stating in the preface that Clarke's deductions "seem'd more ingenious than any which [he] ever yet saw in print", yet instead argued that benevolence was entirely separate from self-love, coming instead from a sense of public service. The essay, which underwent seven London and Dublin editions by 1769, proved an important influence on David Hume's Treatise of Human Nature. Provenance: Contemporary bookplate of John Smith de Burgh, 11th Earl of Clanricarde (1720-1782), late 19th-century bookplate of Auchlochan country house; note of purchase signed Michael Mackin's and dated 1828 to front free endpaper, late 18th/early 19th-century ownership signatu … [Click Below for Full Description]

It appeared in 1728; the preface contains Pemberton's recollections of Newton, especially in old age, and assures the reader that the master had read and approved the work. This work remains one of the most valuable contemporary printed sources on Newton, the account of a close friend. The work also includes a poem on Sir Isaac Newton by Richard Glover (1712-1785, poet and Member of Parliament, written in Glover's 16th year), Pemberton's introduction on Newton's method of reasoning in philosophy, and a long list of subscribers. Dedicated to Sir Robert Walpole with Walpole's engraved arms. ERASME
"Prima edizione". Cfr.
