M Glanvill; Fontenelle
ont> William Forrest : Dublin, 1728. A scarce English translation of Bernard le Bovier de Fontenelle's important scientific work. A smart copy of what is considered to be one of the first major writings of the Age of Enlightenment. The fifth edition of this Glanvill translation. John Glanvill's translation was first compounded in 1687. Glanville was an English barrister by profession, who also wrote poetry and published many translations. Fontenelle's 'Plurality' is one of the earliest works to popularise astronomy for the layman. This work describes a heliocentric model of the universe, which was first suggested by Copernicus in his work 'De Revolutionibus Orbium Coelestium'. This translation has additions of a sixth conversation and a discourse concerning the 'antients and moderns' by Fontenelle which is translated here by 'Mr Hughes'. Illustrated, with a frontispiece. A smart copy of this work. Condition: In a speckled calf binding. Externally, generally smart with rubbing to the joints and extremities. Small loss to the head of spine. Front joint is cracked, with the hinge tender and held by one cord only. Prior owner's inscription to the recto of front endpaper, dated 1904. Internally, firmly bound. Pages are very bright.
[Click Below for Full Description]

BOND, William.
London: for E. Curll, 1728. 8vo (194 × 120 mm), pp. ix, [5], 33, 320, [1], plus 16 pages of Curll's adverts. Engraved frontispiece and 3 engraved plates. Contemporary sprinkled calf, spine with 5 raised bands, label renewed to style. Rubbed, joints starting, head of spine chipped and mostly absent, traces of an old armorial bookplate removed. A very good copy. The Supernatural Philosopher is a reissue of The History of the Life and Adventures of Mr. Duncan Campbell (1720) with the addition of 'Verses to Mr. Campbell. On the History of his Life and Adventures' and 'A remarkable passage of an apparition. 1665'. The author evidently lodged for a while in the same London house as the Scots-born soothsayer Duncan Campbell (d. 1730), who was a well-known figure in the city. Deaf and mute, he was probably educated at Glasgow using the finger system devised by John Wallis in the seventeenth century. The History of the Life was persistently attributed until relatively recently to Defoe even though it was reissued here under Bond's name. . HUTCHESON, Frances (1694-1746)
London: J. Darby and T. Browne, 1728. 8vo. xxii,[2],333,[3]pp. Publisher's ads. Contemporary panelled calf, expertly rebacked to style, spine gilt with raised bands, red morocco lettering pieceFirst edition of a noted work of the Scottish Enlightenment which would have a profound effect on the philosophy of Thomas Jefferson. The philosopher Francis Hutcheson (1694-1746), a seminal figure in the Scottish enlightenment, wrote the present work with the aim to refute the arguments of John Clarke, who had contended that benevolence is the result of self-love. Hutcheson instead presents a system of moral philosophy which delineates the nature and proper functions of government. "Men" he writes in this work "are necessarily determined to pursue their own happiness."ESTC T61154; Kress 3756.

Redi, Francesco.
Lucca, Italy: 1728. fourth edition. Small octavo in vellum with substantial damage and loss; title page vignette; text block stained throughout (perhaps from its proximity to the beverage that constitutes the subject of the book!) but clear and readable; this is an early rendition of Francesco Redi's famous poem on wine; in Italian; from Catholic Encyclopedia: "Redi's poem is thought to have its beginning in a drinking session at the Academia della Crusca in 1666. The situational irony of this learned body in a state of inebriation is transferred to Redi's verse as the praises of solemn literati are sung by a drunken Bacchus. The poem is filled with references to classical as well as contemporary wine-making practices." In 1654 [Redi] went to Florence, where he acted as physician to the Grand dukes Ferdinand II and Cosimo III. He was constantly engaged in experiments intended to improve the practice of medicine and surgery, and yet found leisure for much literary work..."; shelved in Case 0.

Stock value quickly rose incredibly high, as a result of insider trading and speculation on debt consolidation, before crashing in 1720 to just about its original flotation price; the event was subsequently known as the South Sea Bubble. The results were catastrophic - many people were ruined, the national economy suffered, and a parliamentary inquiry followed. The state restructured the company and seized property and assets from disgraced company directors, and several government officials were impeached for corruption. In this appeal Surman maintains he was only a junior officer with the company, serving as Deputy Cashier and that he did not benefit directly from the bubble. … [Click Below for Full Description]
