Fiske I, 63. Seutter Matthias (1678 - 1757) Augsburg
Artist: Seutter Matthias ca ; issued in: Augsburg; date: ca1728 - - technic: Copper print; - colorit: original colored; - condition: Very good; - size (in cm): 49 x 56; - description: Map shows total Asia; - vita of the artist: Matthias Seutter (1678- 1757) Augsburg was the son of a goldsmith in Augsburg. In 1697, Seutter began his studies in Nuremberg and subsequently worked in the publishing house of Jeremias Wolff in Augsburg. In 1710, he established his own publishing house and print shop. The Seutter publishing house produced a great number of maps, atlases, and globes. However, very few original maps were printed there, as Augsburg at that time had no university and no connection to the fields of mathematics or the natural sciences. Seutter therefore copied the work of other cartographers, making his own engravings based on their models. Over 500 maps were produced in his studio. Seutter's most well-known works are the 1725 "Geographical Atlas or an Accurate Depiction of the Whole World" ("Atlas Geographicus oder Accurate Vorstellung der ganzen Welt") with 46 maps, the 1734 "Large Atlas" ("Grosser Atlas") with 131 maps, and the 1744 pocket atlas "Small Atlas" ("Atlas minor") with 64 maps. Matthäus Seutter died in 1757. Seutter's son Albrecht Karl, his son-in-law Conrad Tobias Lotter, and his business partner Johann Michael Probst ran the printing business for five more years.

MASON, Francis
1728 1st ed Consecration of English Bishops Vindication Church of England Mason Includes a 1549 English Printing on Bishops Francis Mason was a 16th-century English priest who is mostly remembered for his written defense of the Church of England and rebuttal to the Nag’s Head Fable. This work, originally titled “Of the Consecration of the Bishops” first saw publication in 1613 and is written in the form of a dialogue between two bishops. It was profusely attacked by the Roman Catholic Church, but because of this Mason was all-the-more prepared to reissue his book. In his book, Mason helped codify what the consecration of bishops should look like within the Church. He states the difficulties that bishops face within the church, particularly temptations, as well as the importance of spiritual foundations through prayer and scripture. According to Drowden, it is because of this work that the Catholic attacks on the English consecration of Bishops ceased. “Mason’s ‘Vindication’ is thorough and effective; and the merit of the work is testified to by the success of its republication. It is an excellent specimen of sound workmanship; and it is largely due to Mason that assaults upon Anglican at an earlier period have been silently abandoned.” (Drowden, 93-94) This first 18th-century English translation includes a lengthy introduction by John Lindsay which provides a complete account of the entire controversy between Mason and the English Catholics. This particular edition was retranslated out of the Latin edition, back into English. Item number: #1384 Price: $499 MASON, Francis A … [Click Below for Full Description]

Locke John
Bittesworth Pemberton and Simon, London 1728 - fifth edition, app.6pgs. preface 308pp + 4p contents,: published anonymously in 1689 by John Locke. The First Treatise attacks patriarchalism in the form of sentence-by-sentence refutation of Robert Filmer's Patriarcha and the Second Treatise outlines a theory of political or civil society based on natural rights and contract theory. In the Second Treatise Locke develops a number of notable themes. It also covers conquest and slavery, property, representative government, and the right of revolution. Brown calf, spine with raised bands, gilt lettering very worn to edges and corners, rear board hinge loose, front board disconnected but present partly stained and worn to edges, stamp to front flyleaf and inner front page , text very clean and bright for the age, needs restoration, but complete and in the original binding. GAY, John (1685-1732)
London: John Watts, 1728. From the Collection of Arthur & Charlotte Vershbow. 8vo (197 x 116 mm). Table of 69 songs, overture "Compos'd by Dr. Pepusch," typographic music throughout the text, woodcut head- and tailpieces. Full speckled calf, gilt ruled, spine with two gilt lettering-pieces, by Riviere & Sons. Provenance: purchased from Goodspeed's Book Shop, 1984. THE FIRST EXPANDED EDITION TO INCLUDE THE MUSIC PRINTED IN THE TEXT. Gay's highly successful "ballad opera," satirizing popular Italian opera was an immediate triumph and ran for a record 62 consecutive performances at the Theatre Royal where it premiered in January 1728. The first edition printed earlier the same year had 16 pages of engraved music at the end. Here the music is printed in the text in woodcut. It featured such memorable low-life characters as Polly Peachum, Jemmy Twitcher, Filch and Sukey Tawdry. For some lyrics, Gay borrowed from Allan Ramsay's Gentle Shepherd (1725). The music was composed by the German born Johann Christoph Pepusch (1667-1752), a contemporary of George Frederick Handel, and also resident in England. It became the model for The Threepenny Opera by Bertolt Brecht and Kurt Weil (1928). There are at least six variant printings of this "second edition." In this copy there are: press figures, p. 45 is correctly numbered, and there are two books advertised on the verso of the title-page; the "names of the Lilliputians" are not listed on the recto of the fourth preliminary leaf. For details of the variants, see the edition of the Beggar's Opera edited by P. E. Lewis (Edinburgh, 1973), … [Click Below for Full Description]
