REDELYKHEID, Cornelis.
Bierens de Haan 3892; Jordan 3069 (2 copies); Sloos, Warfare 8135; STCN (6 copies); for Jan Punt: Scheen, p. 413. Rare first and only edition, luxuriously executed and printed for the author, of a treatise on fortification by the Dutch engineer Cornelis Redelykheid (1728-1787). It centres on methods to improve the masonry and composition of strongholds against hostile artillery and mines, and on fortifying vaults against the most powerful bombs. The large engraved plates with measured drawings include a large fortification plan and several cross-sections, profiles and elevations, many showing vaults. Although the imprint is undated, the author's dedication is dated from Amsterdam, 1759. The present book seems not to have been a normal commercial production but a private publication of the author, probably printed in a small number of copies. With a library and deaccession stamp on the title-page. With some faint foxing in the margins of the plates, not affecting the illustrations. Very good copy, with generous margins and printed on heavy paper. Binding slightly rubbed along the extremities, front hinge slightly cracked, otherwise in good condition.

Ovalle, Alonso de
Extremely rare edition of Ovalle´s map of Chile, first published to illustrate the Historia relacion del Reyno de Chile (Rome, 1646), by far rarer than the Italian edition of the same year, easily recognisable for the Italian text, and the iconography utilised inside the map. This map, which is here found in a dark and strong impression, was printed in Verdussen´s edition of Herrera´s Historia general de las Indias Occidentales, itself a very rare book, which employed only this map rather than the usual 14. Ovalle´s work provides a description of the geography and natural history of the province of Chile, including Tierra del Fuego, and describes the native populations who inhabited the region. In particular, his work is a highly important source for the study of the Araucanian Indians, as it deals at length with their social structure, political organization, diet, and domestic life. Ovalle also discusses the early contact period between the Spanish and Indians, the ensuing conflicts, the Spanish settlement, the advent of Catholic missionaries, proselytization and conversion, the role of the Society of Jesus, miracles and apparitions of the Virgin, and numerous other topics. Overall, it is one of the most primary and richest sources of information on the physical and cultural reality of the country, and provides a remarkable amount of information of the Indian ethnology. Ovalle (1601 - 1651) was a Chilean born historian, educator and Jesuit; he lived in Rome from 1642 to 1650 where he had his work published. Complementing Ovalle's history was a wealth of visu … [Click Below for Full Description]

SEPP, Jan Christiaan.
Horn & Schenkling 20145 & 20733; Landwehr, Col. plates 182 & 202; Nissen, ZBI 3808, 3808a & 3808b. Complete set of one of the finest and best-illustrated works on butterflies and moths ever published, here together with the continuations by Snellen van Vollenhoven and Brants, and the rare supplement by Snellen with unpublished manuscript additions. Work on the publication probably began around 1728 and stopped only two hundred years later, when Brants, the author of the third series, died in 1928, leaving his work unfinished. He published only 10 parts of the first volume of the third series. Altogether the set includes 610 plates and 8 frontispieces, all coloured by a contemporary hand. Most plates show a single species of butterfly or moth in flight and on a plant, along with the larva and pupa, and many add the egg and further figures with anatomical details. With library stamp on flyleaf of ad 1 (1st vol.) and on the final pastedown mentioning the purchase at Asher in 1956. Some occasional foxing and browning in ad 1, 2 and 5, otherwise good; ad 3 untrimmed; Bindings and wrappers all somewhat rubbed, but otherwise in good condition and all still firm. A celebrated and beautifully illustrated lepidopterological classic.

[TRAVEL - BRAZIL - EUROPE - AFRICA].
Sabin 7500; Tiele 1242; cf. Borba de Moraes, p. 728 note; European Americana 729/2 (2 copies); STCN (1 copy); WorldCat (same copy). Surprisingly rare manual for travellers, soldiers and merchants by an anonymous traveller, describing the history and most important provinces and cities of Holland, Italy, Spain, Portugal, Brazil, several countries in Africa such as Morocco, Ethiopia and Algeria, and the island Jersey. The author mentions the persons who played an important role in the history of these particular areas, and assesses each city according to the quality of its buildings, roads and fortifications. The chapter on Brazil is especially of interest as it deals with the discovery of the country, and with the customs and traditions of its people. The first edition, in French, was published at The Hague by M. G. de Merville in 1728. The last ten pages of the preliminaries give a table of contents and an alphabetical list of cities, provinces and countries. In very good condition, with only some very minor worm holes in the gutter margin and spine, and the paper very slightly browned. A rare and informative travel guide with a chapter on Brazil.

Reverend Edw. Combe, ( Godefroy Estrades )
J Clarke at the Bible under the Royal Exchange, London. Published in London in 1728 this is the First Edition of this book on the Sale of Dunkirk at the end of the Anglo Spanish War , The Anglo-Spanish War was a conflict between the English Protectorate of Oliver Cromwell and Spain, between 1654 and 1660. It was caused by commercial rivalry. Each side attacked the other's commercial and colonial interests in various ways such as privateering and naval expeditions. In 1655, an English amphibious expedition invaded Spanish territory in the West Indies. The major land actions took place in the Spanish Netherlands. In 1657, England formed an alliance with France, merging the Anglo-Spanish war with the larger Franco-Spanish War. The war between France and Spain ended with the signing of the Peace of the Pyrenees on 28 October 1659. Cromwell's death in 1658 left England in political turmoil that would result in the return of the Stuarts to the throne of England. After the Restoration of Charles II in England, the Anglo-Spanish War was formally terminated in September 1660. Charles sold Dunkirk to Louis XIV of France in November 1662 - though less than £300,000 of the promised half million was ever paid THE BOOK The book is bound in an old full calf leather binding, 180 pages including unpaginated contents pages at rear, contains decorative woodcut chapter headers CONDITION loss to leather covering on spine back with some mild edge wear else binding is in solid condition, internally a few creased corners else contents generally nice and clean A GOOD EXAMPLE OF THIS VERY RARE BOOK … [Click Below for Full Description]

Two variants of the first edition have been recorded. In one variant page 53 contains three bars of music, the text ends on page 59 and is followed by advertisements on page 60. In the other variant, which omits the bars of music on page 53, the text ends on page 58 and is followed by advertisements on pages 59 and 60. This copy belongs to the latter group, which research on the variations in press numbers by Walter E. Knotts, Philip Gaskell and W. B. Todd has identified as the earliest variant. Gay's satire of the royal court was an immediate triumph which ran for a record 62 consecutive performances at the Theatre Royal where it premiered in January 1728.

SEPP, Jan Christiaan.
Horn & Schenkling 20145; Landwehr, Coloured plates 182 & 202; Nissen, ZBI 3808 & 3808a. One of the finest and best-illustrated works on butterflies and moths ever published, here together with the continuation by Snellen van Vollenhoven. Work on the publication probably began around 1728 and stopped only two hundred years later, when the author of the third series died in 1928, leaving his work unfinished: A. Brants, Nederlandsche vlinders beschreven en afgebeeld (The Hague, 1905-1928). He published only ten parts of the first volume of the third series, not included in the present set. That unfinished third series contained only 10 plates, while the present two series together contain 600 plates plus the 8 frontispieces where butterflies, moths, larvae and pupae on plants form a lovely frame around the title. Most plates show a single species of butterfly or moth in flight and on a plant, along with the larva and pupa, and many add the egg and further figures with anatomical details. "The most important work on Dutch lepidoptera" (Landwehr). Some annotations and inserted notes. With occasional spotting, but otherwise in very good condition and largely untrimmed, preserving most deckles and with some bolts unopened. Bindings rubbed, some spines damaged. A celebrated and beautifully illustrated lepidopterological classic.
