[Click Below for Full Description]

(BERETTA GIOVANNI GASPARE)
presso Gian-Maria Rizzardi, 1728. Pp. 94-314. Johann Amos Commenius - Jan Amos Comenius
Breverianis - Samuel Brewer, Place: Leutschoviae - Leutschau - Levoca, 1728. [28] pp 262 [actually 273] [pp] 11 index. Quadrilingual edition of Comenius' pioneering school reader with parallel Latin, German, Hungarian and Polish texts keyed to 153 woodcuts by Jonas Bubenka. The book is bound in half mottled sheep over decorative half paper covered boards in green and red, 'Orbis Pictus' in ink to the upper cover, speckled red edges to text block. Early ownership inscription in Latin on the first blank, 'Ex Libris Gabrielis. Hic Liber est.' surname scrubbed out. A long 1953 ownership inscription written in Cyrillic on the verso of the same page. The text and images are complete as called-for, the final leaf of text misprinted as page 262 but actually page 273. A very good copy of an enticing text that usually received heavy use. Percy Muir describes the significance of the Orbis Pictus thus: 'The father of all direct attempts to teach children by means of pictures is the German Comenius. its fundamental importance is not to be questioned.' Muir goes on to discuss the peculiar charm of the combination of didactic text with its everyday subject matter. This edition was printed by the prolific Brewer formerly of Wittenberg who made Leutschau - now Levoca in Slovakia - a significant force in printing within the Hungarian empire. Levoca's change in jurisdiction from Hungary to Austro-Hungary to Czechoslovakia to Slovakia perhaps mirrors Brewer's quadrilingual efforts to overcome national differences. Please contact Christian White at Modernfirsteditions if you would like more info … [Click Below for Full Description]

HUYGENS
Janssonio-Waesbergios, 1728. Titles in red and black. With 58 folding engraved plates. Contemporary calf; some occasional browning and offsetting of plates, otherwise a very nice wide-margined copy. FIRST EDITIONS First edition, edited by 'sGravesande. This set represents one of the most comprehensive collections of works by the great Dutch scientist Huygens. The present volumes contain his works on gravity and accelerated motion, the laws of elastic bodies, and the undulatory theory of light, perhaps his most important achievement. Also included are his tracts on optics, instructions on grinding lenses for telescopes, and a description of the Planetary Automate machine he constructed portraying the movements of the solar system. This machine, as well as a number of other innovations and discoveries, are all depicted in the finely engraved illustrations. Huygens (1629-1695), Dutch astronomer and physicist, was one of the greatest scientists of his century. He successfully used the pendulum to regulate clocks, improved the telescope, and developed a wave theory of light, which was first recognized and credited by Young a full century later. Huygens' light theories were opposed to Newton's corpuscular theory of propagation, and remained unaccepted for a century until they were successfully used to explain optical interference. The combined ideas of Huygens and Newton have been applied to the quantum theory by physicists such as Planck, Einstein, and de Broglie.

CUTLER, Nathaniel; HALLEY, Sir Edmond; HARRIS, John; SENEX, John; and DEFOE, Daniel
James and John Knapton, 1728. First. unbound. Sea Chart. Colored engraving. Sheet measures 21 1/4" x 25". Image measures 19 1/2" x 23 1/2".This stunning map of the western hemisphere depicts Guiana and Brazil in South America presented on Edward Wright's projection, also called a globular projection. It features rhumb lines to facilitate navigation. The map focuses more on the coastlines rather than the interiors. This chart was made for the 1728 issued of "Atlas maritimus & commercialis, or, A general view of the world, so far as relates to trade and navigation". The atlas which was meant to compete with Mount and Page's popular "English Pilot", was a collaboration between some of the leading cartographers of the time, including Sir Edmund Halley, John Senex, Nathaniel Cutler, Steven Parker and Daniel Defoe. The atlas unfortunately failed to achieve commercial success as great as its rival, making this a hard-to-find map. The map is in good condition with minor wear along the original folds and overall toning. Some toning over joint. Original plate mark is visible. John Senex (1678-1740) was a kind of Renaissance man of the 18th-century map world, working at times as a scholar, surveyor, engraver, astrologer, book seller and publisher of maps, atlases and globes. In a short period, he developed from an apprentice into one of the most important cartographers of the period and became a Fellow of the Royal Society of London, as well as Official Geographer to Queen Anne of Great Britain. Although well regarded for his pocket-size maps, Senex is probably best known for his gl … [Click Below for Full Description]

Its Commencement again after the Flood, and its Progress through several Nations to the Time of Cimabue, An. 1276. Duodecimo in 6s (158 x 100 mm). Contemporary panelled sheep, spine unlettered, remains of paper titling label tipped onto title fore edge. Title printed in red and black, woodcut initials and vignettes. Spine ends and corners worn, light surface abrasion to boards. Inner hinges cracked but sound. Ownership inscription of Ralph Forster dated 1735 to front free endpaper, with his annotations from chapter IV on. A few pen trials and the odd mark; an attractive copy. First edition of a scarce work on the history of painting. According to a manuscript note to page 34, presumably by Mr Forster, much of the work apparently derives from Dryden's Ancient Masters of Paintinge, Mr Forster supplying page references to Dryden's work to several pages here, with extensive cross-referencing to the Chronological Account of the Painters since the time of Cimabue at the end of the work, which the author ascribes to Mr Richardson's Essay on the Theory of Painiting of 1715, Mr Forster instead supplying numerous page numbers for Dryden's work instead.
