EUSTACHIUS, Barthol. (ca. 1510-1574). -
Roma, Pagliarini, 1728. In-folio (35,8 x 24,5 cm.). P. pergamena coeva. Choulant-Frank, Anatomical Illustration, p. 202. Wellcome II, 536. Cf. Blake 139 e Garrison & M. 391: «These plates are more accurate than the work of Vesalius; Singer was of the opinion that had they appeared in 1552 Eustachius would have ranked with Vesalius as one of the founders of modern anatomy. He discovered the Eustachian tube, the thoracic duct, the adrenals and the abducens nerve, and gave the first accurate description of the uterus. He also described the cochlea, the muscles of the throat and the origin of the optic nerves». Second edition. The copper plates remained unpublished for over 160 years until they were rediscovered in the Vatican Library by Giovanni Maria Lancisi, the papal physician, who published them with his own commentaries in 1714. Only the two Rome editions were printed from the original copper plates. … [Click Below for Full Description]

PICART (Bernard) ; BERNARD (Jean Frédéric).
Amsterdam, J.F. Bernard, 1728 - 1743. [Click Below for Full Description]

HUTCHESON, FRANCIS]
London: printed, and Dublin re-printed by S. Powell, for P. Crampton, and T. Benson, [Dublin], 1728. 172 x 97 mm. (6 3/4 x 3 3/4"). xv, [v], 216 pp. First Dublin Edition (printed the same year as the First Edition). Contemporary polished calf, raised bands, red morocco label. Title page with ink ownership inscription of Jo. Ballantyne, dated 1732. ESTC N9373. Short crack to head of front joint, leather on spine a bit crackled, extremities a little rubbed, but the binding sturdy and not displeasing, and A FINE COPY INTERNALLY, quite clean, fresh, and rather bright. In this essay, moral philosopher Francis Hutcheson discusses the motives for altruistic acts, attributing such benevolence to a sense of the public good and of honor. He refutes a contemporary's claim that such behavior is selfishly motivated by an individual's desire to avoid feelings of distress at the suffering of others, rather than a feeling of compassion for the sufferer. As DNB explains, Hutcheson (1694-1746) argued that "there are different classes of desires; that the desire to assist the afflicted or distressed or to act for the benefit of the public is entirely different from the desire to seek happiness or satisfaction or pleasure for oneself. He connected the desire to act in a spirit of kindness or benevolence to a public sense; this was a new sense, introduced together with a sense of honour for the first time in the Essay." According to the Internet Encyclopedia of Philosophy, "Hutcheson's importance comes from his theories of human nature, which include an account of an innate care and concern for … [Click Below for Full Description]

[Newton, Isaac]. Pemberton, Henry
London: S. Palmer, 1728 First edition. Contemporary full calf ruled in gilt, rebacked with gilt calf spine label. Edges sprinkled red. . Quarto. Engraved title-page vignette, twelve folding engraved plates, plus engraved headbands, tail-pieces, and historiated initials by John Pine after J. Grison. Pine, of course, is known for his wonderful, engraved edition of Horace. With a subscriber's list. Light foxing. Light offsetting from engravings, which are lightly foxed with some having a few small stains. Occasional minor ink and pencil marginalia. Ink initials and red ink stamp on verso of title page. A very good, large copy. "Dr. Pemberton studied under Boerhaave, preparedthe Fifth London Pharmacopoeia and was invited by Newton to edit the third (1726) edition of the Principia. This study of Newton's philosophy is interesting as being the account of a close friend. The preface contains the author's recollections of Newton, especially in his old age. There is also a poem on Sir Isaac by Richard Glover (poet and M.P., 1712-1785) written in his 16th year; the author's introduction on Newton's method of reasoning in philosophy; and a long list of subscribers" (Babson). John Pine (1690-1756) "...was our best native engraver during the first half of the century. His Horace...possesses the delightful unity that such [engraved] books always have. Its strokes may well have influenced Baskerville and Bodoni in their type design. Its vignettes make it one of the few English books that can be compared with French work of the time for delicacy and finish." (Bland, History of Book Il … [Click Below for Full Description]

Horn & Schenkling 20145 & 20733; Landwehr, Col. plates 182 & 202; Nissen, ZBI 3808, 3808a & 3808b. Complete set of one of the finest and best-illustrated works on butterflies and moths ever published, here together with the continuations by Snellen van Vollenhoven and Brants, and the rare supplement by Snellen with unpublished manuscript additions. Work on the publication probably began around 1728 and stopped only two hundred years later, when Brants, the author of the third series, died in 1928, leaving his work unfinished. He published only 10 parts of the first volume of the third series. Altogether the set includes 610 plates and 8 frontispieces, all coloured by a contemporary hand. Most plates show a single species of butterfly or moth in flight and on a plant, along with the larva and pupa, and many add the egg and further figures with anatomical details. With library stamp on flyleaf of ad 1 (1st vol.) and on the final pastedown mentioning the purchase at Asher in 1956. Some occasional foxing and browning in ad 1, 2 and 5, otherwise good; ad 3 untrimmed; Bindings and wrappers all somewhat rubbed, but otherwise in good condition and all still firm. A celebrated and beautifully illustrated lepidopterological classic.

DANCE OF DEATH].
, . . Oberlé, La Bibl. Bleue, 1; Nisard II, p. 284: "Le plus beau des livres de la Bibliothèque Bleue". 18th-century French chapbook edition of one of the most popular picture books in Europe since the Middle Ages. It depicts two Dances of Death: first the Dance of Death of men of all ranks and professions, followed by the Dance of Death of women of various ranks and stations in life. These Dances of Death were meant to remind people that everybody was mortal however powerful in life, and to warn people to be prepared to die at any moment.Browned throughout, some occasional foxing and a small piece torn from the margin of page 19, not affecting text or illustration. Overall a good copy.
