London: Printed for J. Tonson, 1728. FIRST EDITION . Hardcover. The Macclesfield Copy of a Rare and Important Anti-Locke Work On Cognition. 213 x 130 mm (8 3/8 x 5 1/8"). 4 p.l., 231 pp. FIRST EDITION. Pleasing contemporary sprinkled calf, double gilt-rule edging to covers, raised bands, spine panels with large complex gilt floral ornament, red morocco label. Decorative and historiated woodcut headpieces, tailpieces, and initials. First three leaves with small embossed armorial stamp of the Macclesfield Library and front pastedown with matching armorial Macclesfield bookplate. Buickerood, "Two Dissertations," in "1650-1850: Ideas, Aesthetics, and Inquiries in the Early Modern Era," VII, 51-86. Leather a bit dried, spine top slightly rubbed and with two small cracks, very minor nicks and spotting to covers, but the original unsophisticated binding completely solid and still quite appealing. A trace of foxing here and there, otherwise a nearly fine copy internally, the text very clean and fresh, and with quite ample margins as well as deep impressions of the type. Attributed, with some uncertainty, to Zachary Mayne, this is an important early work on cognition that was written in forceful response to the doctrines of John Locke's "Essay on Human Understanding," which the author calls "very dangerous and pernicious." Locke believed that all knowledge stemmed from an initial intake of data through the senses, thus contradicting Plato's theory of ideas, which posits a higher form of understanding independent of sentient perception. Our author objects that Locke puts humanity on the level of the animals. James Buickerood in his lengthy exploration of "Two Dissertations" says that our author's "ultimate purpose is to defend the dignity of human nature by way of establishing a sharp distinction between it and animal nature, which he effects by offering what he claims to be the first extended analysis of the concept of consciousness." Buickerood conceeds that, next to the influence of Locke's work, the present volume cannot measure up in importance, but he does say that in the 18th century "explicit use is made of its arguments and analyses in influential texts such as Edmund Law's English edition of William King's 'De Origine Mali' (which was closely studied by David Hume), and the second edition of Chambers's 'Cyclopaedia,' as well as publication of more restricted scope." In the 19th century, the work was used by philosophers and scholars such as Wilhelm Tennemann, Friederich Überweg, and Noah Porter, who "attributed considerable philosophic significance to" it. And, says Buickerood, Sir William Hamilton "understood its conception of consciousness to bear strong similarities to his own influential position." In general, Buickerood concludes, "the attention and regard [our book] has received has not been proportionate to its worth." The identity of the author is wrapped in uncertainty. Our best guess is that he was Zachary Mayne (1631-94), a clergyman and Oxford graduate who was described by Oliver Cromwell as "eminently godly." Mayne must have written the present work shortly after Locke's "Essay" was published in 1690, but for some reason Mayne's response was only published long after his death, in this first edition of 1728. Like a number of other little treasures from the Macclesfield collection, this is an early English work on an important subject that is of remarkable rarity, especially for a Tonson imprint: ABPC records no other copy at auction since at least 1975, and no other copy seems to be on the market at present.

Frontespizio in rosso e nero. (Lisa Saracco in D.B.I, LXX, 2007). Cfr. Graesse, IV, p. 415: "'Catalogue Bibliographique très rare".

A View of Sir Isaac Newton's Philosophy.

London: Printed by S. Palmer 1728 - FIRST EDITION. 4to, 288 x 218 mms., pp. [50], 407 [408 blank], engraved vignette on title-page, other engraved vignettes and illustrations in text (by John Pine after John Grison), 12 folding engraved plates, recently rebound in quarter calf, spine gilt in compartments to a floral motif, red morocco label, blue marbled boards. An attractive copy. Although Pemberton (1694 - 1771) had a medical degree, he practiced medicine only sporadically. His interest in mathematics led him to show some of his work to the mathematician John Keill, and that brought him into contact with Newton; this book was one of the results. Voltaire in his Letters concerning the English Nation (1733) made extensive use of Pemberton's commentary. The work also formed part of the mathematical tripos at Cambridge shortly after it was published. It is also notable for being the first book to use Caslon's Roman typeface. The poetic tribute by the sixteen-year-old Richard Glover, author of Leonidas (1737) and other epic poems, is usually dismissed as doggerel: raise your hands those who understood Newton at sixteen and had a command of classical literature and prosody. Pemberton returned the compliment in 1738 with one of his works on aesthetics, Observations on Poetry, especially the Epic, occasioned by the late Poem upon Leonidas; in 1753 he published Some Few Reflections on the Tragedy of Boadicea, also by Glover. Among the subscribers is one "Capt. John Price." [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]

1728 - Paris, Martin, Coignard, Guerin, Montalant, 1728. NICE COPY. PICTURES AND MORE DETAILS ON REQUEST. [Attributes: First Edition]

The Deserts of Egypt , Arabia & Syria with Cyprus

Middle East: Augsburg, Seutter, Matthäus c 1728-42. Copper engraved map of Cyprus, Egypt and Syria from Seutter's "Atlas Novus". Original old colour; verso blank The map shows the the Eastern Mediterranean, Cyprus as it lies off the coasts of Egypt, Arabia & Syria. The map is oriented North east with Cyprus at the top centre and the Red Sea also in the centre of the map. The map is obviously a copy of the map by Sanson/Jaillot , re engraved but with most elements included, even to the pirate ships that appear in the sea off Palestine; the shape of Cyprus is slightly different from the earlier map. The decorative title cartouche, scale and the compass rose are re engraved. Good dark impression; slight dampstain to lower margin just entering the image at centrefold; lower centrefold split with repair. Seutter, Matthäus (The Elder): 1678–1757, Seutter was an engraver, globe-maker and publisher. Born in Augsburg in 1685, the son of a goldsmith. Seutter began his studies in Nuremberg in 1697, apprenticed as an engraver to Johann Baptist Homann. in 1707 later he returned to Augsburg subsequently working in the publishing house of Jeremias Wolff in the city. He founded the Seutter publishing house and print shop in 1710, producing maps, atlases, and globes., which became a primary competitor to Homann. Very few original maps were printed there, as Augsburg at that time had no university and none of the necessary connections to the fields of mathematics or the natural sciences. Therefore Seutter copied the work of other cartographers, making his own engravings based on their models (approximately 500 pieces). His "Atlas Geographicus oder Accurate Vorstellung der ganzen Welt' appeared in 1725 with 46 maps: the "Atlas Novus" various editions in 1728, 1730, 1736, 1742; the "Grosser Atlas" in 1734 with 131 maps, and the pocket atlas "Atlas minor in 1744 with 64 maps. After Matthäus Seutter died in 1757, his son, Albrecht Karl, his son-in-law Conrad Tobias Lotter, and his business partner Johann Michael Probst ran the business for five more years.         Medicina Statica:

London - J. Osborn and T. Longman, 1728 Book. Very Good. Hardcover. A scarce early edition of Medicina Statica: Being The Aphorisms Of Sanctorius, translated into English with large explanations to which is added Dr. Keil's Medicina Statica Britannica, with Comparative Remarks, and Explanations. As also Medico-Physical Essays on Agues, Fevers, An Elastick Fibre, The Gout, The Leprosy, Kings-Evil, Venereal Diseases. Illustrated with an engraving to frontispiece and a foldout plate of diagrams. Fourth edition. James Keill (1673 - 1719) was a Scottish physician, philosopher, medical writer and translator. He was an early proponent of mathematical methods in physiology. He applied himself to anatomy, and, moving to England, acquired a reputation by lecturing on anatomy at Oxford and Cambridge. With the degree, but without belonging to the College of Physicians, he settled in 1703 as a physician at Northampton, where he continued for the rest of his life. He was an active supporter of the mechanical or iatro-mathematical school of medicine; some of his ideas derived from his brother, a mathematician. He discussed by mathematical methods, combined with experiment, several physiological problems, such as secretion, the amount of blood in the body, muscular motion, and the force of the heart. On the latter point he corrected an exaggerated estimate of Giovanni Alfonso Borelli; but his own results were not satisfactory, and were criticised by James Jurin in the Philosophical Transactions. Keill's essays were, however, esteemed. He also made a series of physiological observations on himself, after the manner of Santorio Sanctorius, published as Medicina statica Britannica, in the third edition of his essays. With an ink annotation to verso of title. Condition: Handsomely rebound in quarter morocco with cloth covered boards. Externally, in a lovely condition with only minor shelfwear. Internally, firmly bound. Bright but with scattered background foxing and handling marks and a small institutional label to front pastedown. Overall: VERY GOOD INDEED.

A Canoe of the Sandwich Islands, the Rowers Masked

This outstandingly detailed copper-plate engraving depicting a scene in Captain Cooks Journey. Overall this print measures 21.5" x 16".Captain James Cook (1728-1779) was a British navigator, explorer and cartographer with the Royal Navy. In 1766, Cook began what would be three separate voyages to the Pacific, studying, charting and documenting the Pacific and island inhabitants. The engravings and images produced from these great eighteenth-century voyages presented the world with scientific and ethnographic data, pictorial representations, and cartographic discoveries of the pacific from its northern reaches to its southern extremities for the very first time. For his third and final voyage beginning July 12th 1776, Captain Cook commanded HMS Resolution in search of the Northwest Passage. This voyage was different to his previous two, however. Britain was at war as its American colonies fought for their own sovereignty. The Declaration of Independence had been signed on the Fourth of July, just eight days before the Resolution sailed, and the already perilous journey was now also in danger of capture from American pirates ready to hold the vessels hostage on their voyage home. It is notable that Benjamin Franklin, American Minister to the court of France, wrote a letter requesting free passage for Cook, as a mark of respect for the man himself and also in recognition of the importance of the journey's mission. We will not be knowingly undersold on this work of art.. Overall this print is in good condition with some light foxing/staining in margins.

John Stockdale, Scatcherd and Whitaker, John Fielding and John Hardy Captain James Cook (1728-1779) was a British explorer and navigator. He first went to sea as a teenager with the British merchant navy, and later joined the Royal Navy in 1755. In the course of his explorations, he achieved the first recorded European contact with Australia and Hawaii (which is where he died in a fight with natives on his third Pacific voyage). This set comprises 4 volumes, dated 1784-86. This is the first octavo edition of Cook's third voyage to discover a northwest passage linking the Atlantic and Pacific oceans. This set is remarkably clean and complete in the unrestored contemporary full calf bindings.  The set includes an engraved frontispiece portrait of Cook (and protective tissue cover), large engraved folding "General Chart" of Cook's three voyages in Volume I, one folding chart of the Sandwich Islands and a large folding plate of the "Death of Captain James Cook" in Volume III, as well as other 47 plates throughout all four volumes.  The contents are bright, clean, and tight.  We find no spotting and all charts and illustrations are present.  One plate with has a 3-inch tear, but all are otherwise in good condition with usual transfer browning to opposing text.  All bindings are intact except for Volume I, which has detached boards.  The hinges are cracked but holding on Volumes II - IV.  The contents of the four volumes are as follows: Vol I "Transactions from the beginning of the voyage, till our departure from New Zealand". It contains 22 chapters in 3 books, 370 pages. Vol II "Occurrences at Otaheite and the Society Isles; and Prosecution of the voyage to the coast of North America". The Decisions Of The Lords Of Council And Session, In Most Cases of Importance, For the Months of November and December 1714, And January, February, June and July, 1715. With an Alphabetical Abridgment, And the Acts of Sederunt Made in that Time. Edinburgh: Printed by John Moncur for James M'Euen, 1720. vi [i.e. iv], 178, 14 pp. Folio (11-1/2" x 7"). Contemporary speckled calf, raised bands, lettering piece and gilt ornaments to spine, free endpapers lacking. Some rubbing to extremities, joints starting at ends, light toning to text. Early owner signature to front free endpaper, interior otherwise clean. An appealing copy. * First edition. This was Kames's first publication and an auspicious beginning to a long and successful publishing career. Admitted to the Scottish Bar in 1724, Kames was initially "not very successful. In 1728, however, he published his 'Remarkable Decisions ...,' a carefully executed work, which drew attention to (his) abilities. From this time his progress was assured" (DNB). Some copies were issued with a 6-page preface; this one was not, nor were two other copies we have handled; the copy in the British Library and the entry in the NUC also omit the preface. Whether this represents the "normal issue" is undetermined, but by no means is it uncommon. Dictionary of National Biography IX:1126. Sweet & Maxwell, A Legal Bibliography of the British Commonwealth 5:57 (listing Kames's continuation of these reports to 1752). Wallace, The Reporters 553.
