        The History of Japan: giving an account of the antient and present state and government of that empire; of its temples, palaces, castles, and other buildings; of its minerals, trees, plants, animals, birds and fishes; of the chronology and succession of the emperors, ecclesiastical and secular; of the original descent, religions, customs, and manufactures of the natives, and of their trade and commerce with the Dutch and Chinese. Together with a description of the kingdom of Siam...

      London: Thomas Woodward and Charles Davis, 1728. Two volumes, folio, with an engraved additional title (dated 1727) and 45 plates and maps, many folding; titles printed in red and black; contemporary panelled calf, spines gilt. An exceptionally important book on Japan and an enormous pioneering collection of facts by the "truthful and learned traveller" as Voltaire described Kaempfer, who had reached Japan in 1690 after sailing from Batavia via Siam as a physician with the Dutch East India Company. Although much of his two-year stay was spent on the island of Deshima, to which the Dutch merchants were confined by the strict orders of the Tokugawa regime, he was twice able to accompany the annual Dutch embassy from Nagasaki to the Shogun's court at Edo (Tokyo). After Kaempfer's death in 1716 Sir Hans Sloane bought his botanical collections and library, including his unpublished manuscripts. Sloane's librarian, J.G. Scheuchzer, translated everything in the manuscripts that concerned Japan and published it in this form in 1727 under the aegis of the Royal Society. This English edition is therefore its first appearance in print in any language.Subsequent French versions derived from this English original became the source from which the philosophes, from Montesquieu and Voltaire to the Encyclopedists, took a good deal of their information. Kaempfer's information became the principal source for the many entries in the Enyclopédie concerning Japan: as the Encyclopedia of the Enlightenment points out, Koseki Takeshi has written of 219 separate entries relating to Japan in the Encyclopédie, the most significant being Diderot's "Japonais, Philosophie des".The History of Japan was 'for more than a century the chief source of Western knowledge of the country. It contains the first biography of Kaempfer, an account of his journey, a history and description of Japan and its fauna, a description of Nagasaki and Deshima; a report on two embassies to Edo with a description of the cities which were visited on the way; and appendixes on tea, Japanese paper, acupuncture, moxa, ambergris, and Japan's seclusion policy' (DSB). The Second Appendix, present in this issue, recounts the unsuccessful attempt of the English East India Company in 1673 to re-open direct trade with Japan after a lapse of 50 years.This is an example of the first edition, in its second and best issue with the extra Second Appendix containing 'part of an authentick journal of a voyage to Japan, made by the English in the year 1673'. This was not included in the first issue of the book that appeared in 1727, here unchanged except for the new title-pages (dated 1728) which specify the addition of the journal. Both volumes of the present copy have a 1728 title-page; some copies of this issue have mixed title-pages retaining a 1727 title-page in the second volume. Here the engraved title to the first volume retains its 1727 date. A couple of clean tears to plates; old repairs to spines of bindings.

        Traité du nivellement, avec une relation de quelques nivellements faits par ordre du Roy. Et un abrégé de la mesure de la terre. Mis en lumière par les soins de M. de La Hire.

      Paris, Montalant, 1728. ____ Seconde édition. Jean Picard fut chargé par l'Académie des Sciences de mesurer un degré de méridien. Il trouva 57060 toises. Ce résultat, très voisin de la mesure exacte, a été pour la science d'une utilité extraordinaire, car elle permit à Newton de poursuivre ses recherches sur la gravitation universelle, alors qu'il avait été induit en erreur par les mesures défectueuses de Norwood. Cet ouvrage posthume, édité par La Hire contient: -La théorie du nivellement. -La description des instruments. [Picard utilisa pour la première fois des instruments à angles munis de lunettes et de réticules, ce qui devait donner à ses mesures une bien plus grande précision] -Les pratiques du nivellement. -La relation des nivellements de plusieurs endroits. Enfin, La Hire a placé à la fin du volume un abrégé de la "Mesure de la terre" de Jean Picard. Cet ouvrage "n'était entre les mains que de très peu de personnes, n'y en ayant eu qu'un petit nombre d'exemplaires qui avaient été destinés pour faire des présents." Illustrée par de nombreux bois gravés dans le texte et 4 gravures sur cuivre, disposées sur 3 planches hors-texte. Un accroc à la coiffe inférieure et au départ de la charnière avec deux petits manques de peau sur le plat à proximité, bon exemplaire par ailleurs. *****. In-12. [165 x 92 mm] Collation : (16), 212, (12) pp., 3 planches h.-t. Veau, dos à nerfs orné, tranches marbrées. (Reliure de l'époque.).

        Interesses de Inglaterra Mal Entendidos en la Guerra Presente con España

      Joseph Bernardo de Hogal, Mexico 1728 - [32], 196pp. Woodcut arms on dedication leaf, title within elaborate typographic border. Contemporary limp vellum First edition in Spanish and the first edition published in the Americas. Written in the midst of the War of Spanish Succession, the work was first published in French in 1703, falsely claiming to be a translation of an English work. The author represented the French at The Hague in peace negotiations and here anonymously (and posing as an Englishman) reviews English trade in Europe and the West Indies and, to better encourage his counterparts at The Hague to end the war, argues that the conflict greatly benefitted Great Britain's commercial interests. Of particular note is Dubos's prophesy that once the American colonies learned that they could operate independently from their mother country, that there would be a revolution. The work wasn't published in Spain until 1741 and never published in England. Sabin 98172; Medina 3030; Palau 346110. [Attributes: First Edition]

        Cyclopaedia: or, an universal dictionary of arts and sciences;

      London: London: printed for James and John Knapton, John Darby, Daniel Midwinter [& 15 others in London],, 1728. containing the Definitions of the Terms, and an account of the Things signified thereby, in the several Arts, both Liberal and Mechanical, and the several Sciences, Human and Divine: the figures, kinds, properties, productions, preparations, and uses, of things natural and artificial; the rise, progress, and state of things ecclesiastical, civil, military, and commercial: with the several systems, sects, opinions, &c. among philosophers, divines, mathematicians, physicians, antiquaries, criticks, &c. The whole intended as a course of antient and modern learning. Compiles from the best Authors, Dictionaries, Journals, Memoirs, Transactions, Ephemerides, &c. in several languages. In two volumes. 2 volumes, folio (393 × 244 mm). Recently stoutly bound in red cloth boards, morocco spines lettered and numbered gilt, raised bands. Double-page engraved frontispiece, and 19 engraved plates (of which 6 are folding; title pages printed in red and black, woodcut vignettes and illustrations in the text. Modern ex libris to front pastedowns. Corners slightly rubbed, a few marginal tears repaired and one small stain; two plates strengthened along fold, the anatomy plate browned as usual, occasional light spotting and dust soiling; a very good set. First edition. "Though to Harris must go the honours of compiling the first true English encyclopaedia, Chambers is clearly the father of the modern encyclopaedia throughout the world" (Collison, p. 103). Ephraim Chambers (c.1680-1740), apprenticed to a London cartographer, "was seized by the idea that Harris's Lexicon needed bringing up to date and that he was the man to do this 'work so seemingly disproportionate to any single person's experience.' A good French scholar, he adopted Moreri and Bayle to the common-sense climate of the English Enlightenment. Moreover, he has produced a novel device that has proved indispensable to every subsequent lexicographer and encyclopaedist, namely, cross-references; so that 'a chain may be carried on from one end of an art to the other'" (PMM). Walsh has written, "Although the Cyclopaedia is now but a landmark in the history of encyclopaedia publishing, its impact and influence upon later generations was incalculable. It directly influenced the famous Encyclopédie of Diderot, and the new Encyclopaedia compiled by Abraham Rees and published between 1802 and 1820 ? Less directly, the pioneering example of Cyclopaedia stimulated the publication of the Encyclopaedia Britannica and many subsequent works" (Anglo-American General Encyclopaedias, quoted in Alston).

        Observations on the Small Pox: or, An Essay to discover a more Effectual Method of Cure

      - 4 p.l., xix, 164 pp. 8vo, cont. mottled calf by John Brindley, single gilt fillet round sides, the four corners of each cover elaborately gilt with Brindley's characteristic dolphins surmounted by crowns within circular wreaths, spine divided into six compartments, five of which with the golden fleece device in gilt, green morocco lettering piece in remaining compartment. London: J. Brindley, 1728. First edition; an extraordinary "illuminated" copy with the title-page, initials, and section headings all heightened in gold, and bound by John Brindley, bookbinder to Frederick, Prince of Wales and Queen Caroline. The initials along with the vignettes and typographical ornaments at the beginning and end of each chapter have also been skillfully decorated in blue, red, and yellow. This remarkable book, with all the decorations contemporary, comes from the library at Marble Hill House, the Palladian villa constructed 1724-29 at Twickenham which was built by Henrietta Howard (ca. 1688-1767), countess of Suffolk and mistress of George II. Pope helped design the gardens and he, Gay, and George Berkeley were frequent visitors. Henrietta Howard was an intimate of Queen Caroline, who encouraged the countess in her sexual relationship with King George II. The present book is dedicated to Queen Caroline and clearly there is some connection, because of its special illuminations and binding, between the Queen and Henrietta Howard. Could this have been the Queen's copy or one specially prepared for her close and useful friend? This book was printed by William Bowyer and his records show that 350 ordinary copies and 150 large-paper copies were printed. Richard Holland (1688-1730), was born in London and educated at St. Catharine's College, Cambridge, where he received his M.D. in 1723. He became a fellow of the College of Physicians in 1725 and was elected a fellow of the Royal Society in 1726. This is his only book, which provides many case histories. A fine and special copy. With a contemporary inscription on the leaf facing the title "Removed from Marble Hill House." Later engraved bookplate of M. General Sir Charles Stewart. This copy was sold Sotheby's, 20 July 1959, part of lot 749. ? ODNB for Holland and Howard. [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]

        Nouveau voyage autour du monde
