        Constitutiones Apostolicae

1728. (POPE BENEDICT XIV) (CATHOLIC CHURCH). Constitutiones Apostolicæ et Decreta Consistorialia Quae Jurantur, ac Formula JuramentiÂ… Urbini: Antonium Fantauzzi, 1728. Small folio (8-1/2 by 11-1/2 inches), contemporary full vellum, gilt centerpiece on covers, manuscript title on spine. $2500.18th-century Latin edition of this compendium of canonical law, in contemporary vellum-gilt with the arms of Pope Benedict XIV in gilt on the covers, indicating that it came from the PopeÂ’s library or was presented by him as a gift.Benedict XIV was elected Pope in 1740. The conclave that elected him had lasted for six months, and he is reported to have said to the cardinals: “If you wish to elect a saint, choose Gotti; a statesman, Aldrovandi; an honest man, me.” His Papacy began in a time of great difficulties, chiefly caused by the disputes between Catholic rulers and the Papacy about governmental demands to nominate bishops rather than leaving the appointment to the Church. He had a very active papacy, reforming the education of priests, the calendar of feasts of the Church, and many papal institutions. Engraved vignette of the arms of Pope Benedict XIII (Pope at the time of this bookÂ’s publication) on title page; engraved headpiece and initial. Occasional foxing and dampstaining; contemporary vellum-gilt quite nice. An excellent copy.

De nieuw uitgevonden sluis met in- en uitschuivende deuren. With: (2) REDELYKHEID, Cornelis. De nieuw uitgevonden diep-machine. The Hague, Hendrik Christoffel Gutteling; Amsterdam, Jacob Yntema & Jacob Tieboel; for the author, 1774. 2 works in 1 volume. Large folio (49.5 x 31 cm). Ad 1 with 6 large folding engraved plates and ad 2 with 3 large folding engraved plates. Contemporary half calf.

      - Bierens de Haan 3902 & 3900; Sloos, Gewapend met kennis, pp. 208-209; not in Roberts & Trent; for the author: NNBW VIII, cols. 1266-1268. Two rare first editions, in the original Dutch, containing detailed descriptions and illustrations of two new inventions in hydraulic engineering: a sluice with sliding gates and a dredging machine. They were designed by the accomplished engineer Cornelis Redelykheid (1728-1788), well-known in his time, but often overlooked in modern literature. The descriptions are accompanied by a total of 9 detailed large folding plates. The dredging machine looks especially ingenious.Redelykheid was already working on his sluice with sliding gates in 1772 and a model was built, one fourth its intended size. The model was inspected and tested by the hydraulic engineer Christiaan Brunings (1736-1805), then inspector general of rivers & waterways, who later founded the Dutch water management department now known as "Rijkswaterstaat". Brunings wrote an extensive and positive rapport on the sluice, which led Redelykheid to be awarded with 1,000 gold ducats by the States of Holland. The award enabled the inventor to publish the present two works at his own expense, both including a preface by Brunings. As a grateful gesture Redelykheid presented the present copy to Brunings, with an inscription on each of the two title-pages.With library stamp and tiny bookplate. Only some minor thumbing in the margins of a few leaves and the leaves facing the plates slightly discoloured where the leaves overlap the fold of the plates, otherwise in very good condition, text leaves untrimmed, leaving wide margins, and with the plates in very crisp impressions. Binding rubbed, with ends of the spine slightly damaged, but still firm and otherwise good.

With a different engraved vignette on the title-page of each volume by Jean Michel Moreau Le Jeune, an engraved frontispiece portrait of the author by Charles Nicolas Cochin and 12 folding engraved plates. Contemporary French mottled calf, spines richly gold-tooled.

DSB I, p. 527; Ferguson, Bib. Chem., I, pp. 83-84; Wellcome, p. 118; Mathew Boulton's fine copy of the first and best edition of a thorough handbook of practical chemistry by one of France's most distinguished 18th-century chemists, pharmacists and equipment makers, with 12 plates showing a wide variety of furnaces, boilers, distilling equipment and other glassware, crucibles, etc. Baumé (1728-1804) worked for decades as a pharmacist and designed and produced laboratory apparatus. The present book, his most important publication, grew out of a series of courses he taught in the years 1757 to 1772. At the end of the latter year he was elected to the Académie des Sciences. Distillation (including the distillation of wine) was one of his specialties. A fine copy, with the two-leaf cancel (volume I, pages 71-74), and with only a minor tear in the text of 1 leaf and an occasional minor spot. Bindings with minor damage to the spines, but still very good. With the18th-century letterpress bookplates of Mathew Boulton. A fine copy of a classic chemistry manual, especially interesting as a source for Watt and Boulton's steam engine.

Geburth, Leben und Todt des berühmten Scaramuzza, neopolitanischen Comödianten. Ins Teutsche übersetzet auf Begehren des Oratio Romantino, Sprach-Meistern. Nascita, vita e morte del famoso Scaramuzza.

Ohne Ort, 1728. - Kl-8°, circa 13,6 x 8,5 cm. 2 Kupferstiche (Marinetta und Scaramuzza), 5 Bll., 191 SS., 5 Bll. Halb-Leder d. The History of Japan: giving an account of the antient and present state and government of that empire; of its temples, palaces, castles, and other buildings; of its minerals, trees, plants, animals, birds and fishes; of the chronology and succession of the emperors, ecclesiastical and secular; of the original descent, religions, customs, and manufactures of the natives, and of their trade and commerce with the Dutch and Chinese. Together with a description of the kingdom of Siam...

London: Thomas Woodward and Charles Davis, 1728. Two volumes, folio, with an engraved additional title (dated 1727) and 45 plates and maps, many folding; titles printed in red and black; contemporary panelled calf, spines gilt. An exceptionally important book on Japan and an enormous pioneering collection of facts by the "truthful and learned traveller" as Voltaire described Kaempfer, who had reached Japan in 1690 after sailing from Batavia via Siam as a physician with the Dutch East India Company. Although much of his two-year stay was spent on the island of Deshima, to which the Dutch merchants were confined by the strict orders of the Tokugawa regime, he was twice able to accompany the annual Dutch embassy from Nagasaki to the Shogun's court at Edo (Tokyo). After Kaempfer's death in 1716 Sir Hans Sloane bought his botanical collections and library, including his unpublished manuscripts. Sloane's librarian, J.G. Scheuchzer, translated everything in the manuscripts that concerned Japan and published it in this form in 1727 under the aegis of the Royal Society. This English edition is therefore its first appearance in print in any language.Subsequent French versions derived from this English original became the source from which the philosophes, from Montesquieu and Voltaire to the Encyclopedists, took a good deal of their information. Kaempfer's information became the principal source for the many entries in the Enyclopédie concerning Japan: as the Encyclopedia of the Enlightenment points out, Koseki Takeshi has written of 219 separate entries relating to Japan in the Encyclopédie, the most significant being Diderot's "Japonais, Philosophie des".The History of Japan was 'for more than a century the chief source of Western knowledge of the country. It contains the first biography of Kaempfer, an account of his journey, a history and description of Japan and its fauna, a description of Nagasaki and Deshima; a report on two embassies to Edo with a description of the cities which were visited on the way; and appendixes on tea, Japanese paper, acupuncture, moxa, ambergris, and Japan's seclusion policy' (DSB). The Second Appendix, present in this issue, recounts the unsuccessful attempt of the English East India Company in 1673 to re-open direct trade with Japan after a lapse of 50 years. This is an example of the first edition, in its second and best issue with the extra Second Appendix containing 'part of an authentick journal of a voyage to Japan, made by the English in the year 1673'. This was not included in the first issue of the book that appeared in 1727, here unchanged except for the new title-pages (dated 1728) which specify the addition of the journal. Both volumes of the present copy have a 1728 title-page; some copies of this issue have mixed title-pages retaining a 1727 title-page in the second volume. Here the engraved title to the first volume retains its 1727 date. A couple of clean tears to plates; old repairs to spines of bindings.

*****. In-12. [165 x 92 mm] Collation : (16), 212, (12) pp., 3 planches h.-t. Veau, dos à nerfs orné, tranches marbrées. (Reliure de l'époque.).

Interesses de Inglaterra Mal Entendidos en la Guerra Presente con España

Joseph Bernardo de Hogal, Mexico 1728 - [32], 196pp. Woodcut arms on dedication leaf, title within elaborate typographic border. Contemporary limp vellum First edition in Spanish and the first edition published in the Americas. Written in the midst of the War of Spanish Succession, the work was first published in French in 1703, falsely claiming to be a translation of an English work. The author represented the French at The Hague in peace negotiations and here anonymously (and posing as an Englishman) reviews English trade in Europe and the West Indies and, to better encourage his counterparts at The Hague to end the war, argues that the conflict greatly benefitted Great Britain's commercial interests. Of particular note is Dubos's prophesy that once the American colonies learned that they could operate independently from their mother country, that there would be a revolution. The work wasn't published in Spain until 1741 and never published in England. Sabin 98172; Medina 3030; Palau 346110. [Attributes: First Edition]
