Love in Several Masques. A Comedy, as it is Acted at the Theatre-Royal …

London: John Watts, 1728. First edition. [viii], 82, [2] pp. 8vo. Disbound. First three leaves detached. In a custom gray card folder. First edition. [viii], 82, [2] pp. 8vo. Fielding's First Play. First edition of the 20-year-old Fielding's first play and his second surviving publication. "Fielding's career as dramatist began auspiciously enough when, as an unknown author in his twentieth year, his first play, the comedy Love in Several Masques, was staged by Cibber at Drury Lane-an extraordinary favour due probably to the influence of Lady Mary, to whom Fielding dedicated the published version" (ODNB). In the Preface Fielding acknowledges the difficulty of competing for audiences with Gay's Beggar's Opera and Vanburgh's The Provok'd Husband. Love in Several Masques would run for only 4 nights, and Fielding would shortly depart for Holland to study, his next theatrical works not appearing until 1730. Cross III, p. 290

      - Horn & Schenkling 20145; Landwehr, Coloured plates 182 & 202; Nissen, ZBI 3808 & 3808a. One of the finest and best-illustrated works on butterflies and moths ever published, here together with the continuation by Snellen van Vollenhoven. Work on the publication probably began around 1728 and stopped only two hundred years later, when the author of the third series died in 1928, leaving his work unfinished: A. Brants, Nederlandsche vlinders beschreven en afgebeeld (The Hague, 1905-1928). He published only ten parts of the first volume of the third series, not included in the present set. That unfinished third series contained only 10 plates, while the present two series together contain 600 plates plus the 8 frontispieces where butterflies, moths, larvae and pupae on plants form a lovely frame around the title. Most plates show a single species of butterfly or moth in flight and on a plant, along with the larva and pupa, and many add the egg and further figures with anatomical details. "The most important work on Dutch lepidoptera" (Landwehr). Some annotations and inserted notes. With occasional spotting, but otherwise in very good condition and largely untrimmed, preserving most deckles and with some bolts unopened. Bindings rubbed, some spines damaged. A celebrated and beautifully illustrated lepidopterological classic.

Taferelen der Voornaamste Geschiedenissen van het Oude en Nieuwe Testament, en Andere Boeken, bij de Heilige Schrift Gevoegt, door de vermaarde kunstenaars Hoet, Houbraken, en Picart getekent. (Three volumes) Figures de la Bible

Pieter de Hondt, The Hague 1728 - Unique hand-colored copy of this early 18th Century collection of biblical illustrations. With 212 hand-colored copper engraved plates, 29 of which are double paged, and many hand-colored headpieces, tailpieces, vignettes and initials throughout the text. Folio, 44 by 28 cm. [2], 148, [2]; [2], [149]-280, 14; 160 pp. Engravings are based on paintings by Bernard Picart, Gerard Hoet and Jacob Houbrahen. Each plate has captions below rendered in five languages: Dutch, English, German, Latin, French, English and Hebrew. Accompanying each plate is also two pages of text, this given entirely in Dutch, which goes into greater detail the biblical story depicted in the plate. This work is thus not a bible per se, but rather, a compilation of the major biblical stories, each of which is shown in an elaborate, minutely detailed, often graphic illustration. Two volumes are devoted to the old testament, one, to the new. Of the contributors, the best known today is surely Bernard Picart, whose majesterial "Cérémonies et coutumes religieuses de tous les peuples du monde" was a landmark in a wider understanding of the world's religions and remains to this day a highly prized plate book. A half-title plate in the first volume bears the title of "Figures de la Bible" and is credited to Picart as the publisher, and sited in Amsterdam, 1720. We note one other anomaly: the title page spells "Taferelen", the Dutch word for "scenes", with a single "e" in its last syllable, while elsewhere in the text it is spelled as "Tafereelen". The half brown morocco binding is probaby from the nineteenth century. It remains impressive, notwithstanding some rubbing and minor abrasions. There is scattered light soiling within, and a few very minor corner chips. Overall, a stunning, and special, set.

Small 1mo (42 x 33 cm). With engraved title-page (including the coat of arms of Baron de Firmian) and 24 engraved plates. Contemporary half vellum.

Beitmann, Geschichte der Gartenkunst IX, pp. 417-425; Berlin Kat. 3333; Springer, p. 37; not in De Ganay; Dochnahl; Weinreb. First and only edition of an important, wholly engraved model book for German rococo gardens. "Danreitters Buch gilt als das wichtigste Musterbuch für die deutschen Rokokogärten .... Es enthielt in geschlossener Form seine gültigen Gestaltungsprinzipien. Selbst in Frankreich gab es nichts Vergleichbares" (Beitmann). Several of the plans are likely based on real gardens, for example the plan of the garden of Schloss Klesheim at the end of the 1720s.In 1728 Franz Anton Danreiter (1695-1760) was appointed court gardener and inspector to related buildings by the ducal bishop of Salzburg. He translated Dezallier's La theorie et la pratique du jardinage into German, helping introduce French garden design to German-speaking countries. Danreiter served five successive bishops in Salzburg. Between 1727 and 1735 he also engraved a number of large-scale views of the city which represent a unique documentation of Salzburg in its 18th century baroque glory. The title-page with a reinforced horizontal fold and some smudges, and a few leaves with minor thumbing and foxing; the plates in very good condition. Marbled sides of the binding discoloured and with stains near the outer edges, but still firm and good.

Lucan was the son of Marcus Annaeus Mela and grandson of Seneca the Elder; he grew up under the tutelage of his uncle Seneca the Younger. Born into a wealthy family, he studied rhetoric at Athens and was probably provided with a philosophical and Stoic education by his uncle. He found success under Nero, became one of the emperor's close friends and was rewarded with a quaestorship. During this time he circulated the first three books of his epic poem, Pharsalia (labelled De Bello civili in the manuscripts), which told the story of the civil war between Julius Caesar and Pompey. The editor; Franz van Oudendorp (1696 - 1761) was a Dutch philologist and professor for History and Rhetoric at the University of Leiden. He became famous for publishing the works of many Latin writers during his life. (Wikipedia) [Attributes: Hard Cover]

Compendio de Noticias Mexicanas... en la impression de las Gazetas de Mexico, que a imitacion de las cortes de la Europa, se imprimen cada mes, y estas corresponden desde el año de 1728, 729, 730

First edition. Extremely rare run of issues 1 to 37 of the Gazeta de Mexico, covering the period from January 1728 to December 1730; evidently intended as a volume in itself, it was issued with a collective title page, and preliminaries. These are the first numbers; itself, this volume is complete, as issued published under a general title, collating as the copy held at the Biblioteca Nacional de Mexico (OCLC 651344778) and the Universidad Complutense de Madrid. The newspaper, modeled after the European ones, ran with the title of Gazeta until 1739, when it changed it´s name -and printer- for Mercurio de Mexico, running from 1740 to 1742. This is only the second periodical of Mexico, and the first of substance, preceded only by a short run in the 1720´s: "Gaceta de Mexico, y noticias de Nueva España", which only lived through 6 numbers, during 1722; "First Mexican newspaper" (Medina, referring to the 1722 Gazette). Hogal makes a reference to the earlier version of the Gazette, claiming it´s author was Juan Ignacio de Castorena y Ursua. "Extremely rare and curious, being a collection of the first regular newspaper established in Spanish America" (Sabin). Provenance: from the library of Dr. Michael Mathes, small stamps "MM" on verso of title and pp. 52. Medina, Mexico, 2979. Palau, 285011. Sabin, 48483.

The large engraved plates with measured drawings include a large fortification plan and several cross-sections, profiles and elevations, many showing vaults. Although the imprint is undated, the author's dedication is dated from Amsterdam, 1759. The present book seems not to have been a normal commercial production but a private publication of the author, probably printed in a small number of copies. With a library and deaccession stamp on the title-page. With some faint foxing in the margins of the plates, not affecting the illustrations. Very good copy, with generous margins and printed on heavy paper.         Tabla Geographica del Reyno de Chile

1728 - Extremely rare Spanish edition of Ovalle´s famous map of Chile, and one of the most important ones of the 17th century. 1728. Antwerp. Juan Bautista Verdussen. 495 x 330 mm. Short tear restored, folded, flattened; strong, and dark impression. 6,000 $ Extremely rare edition of Ovalle´s map of Chile, first published to illustrate the Historia relacion del Reyno de Chile (Rome, 1646), by far rarer than the Italian edition of the same year, easily recognisable for the Italian text, and the iconography utilised inside the map. This map, which is here found in a dark and strong impression, was printed in Verdussen´s edition of Herrera´s Historia general de las Indias Occidentales, itself a very rare book, which employed only this map rather than the usual 14. Ovalle´s work provides a description of the geography and natural history of the province of Chile, including Tierra del Fuego, and describes the native populations who inhabited the region. In particular, his work is a highly important source for the study of the Araucanian Indians, as it deals at length with their social structure, political organization, diet, and domestic life. Ovalle also discusses the early contact period between the Spanish and Indians, the ensuing conflicts, the Spanish settlement, the advent of Catholic missionaries, proselytization and conversion, the role of the Society of Jesus, miracles and apparitions of the Virgin, and numerous other topics. Overall, it is one of the most primary and richest sources of information on the physical and cultural reality of the country, and provides a remarkable amount of information of the Indian ethnology. Ovalle (1601 – 1651) was a Chilean born historian, educator and Jesuit; he lived in Rome from 1642 to 1650 where he had his work published. Complementing Ovalle's history was a wealth of visual images, with renderings of natives, architecture and city life. In the text are fourteen engravings showing Indian customs, Catholic religious imagery, and a map of the city of Santiago. The engraved map, " Tabla Geographica del Reyno de Chile " shows the entire region discussed in the book and is considered one of the most relevant cartographic productions on Chile of the 17th century; it is, additionally, quite a beautiful map. The importance of the geographical information provided, combined with the iconography, make the map one of the most coveted of the region. Alonso de Ovalle (1601 – 1651) was a Chilean born Jesuit Priest, historian, and educator, member of a prominent colonial family; his studies were carried out in Cordoba (Argentina) and finished in Chile, where he would work until the Society sent him to Rome, to solve matters for the Vice-Province of Chile with the General of the Order, staying for several years. His fame was gained through his seminal history of Chile “Historica relacion del reyno de Chile” (1646), immediately translated into Italian. His perilous return to Chile was undertaken in 1650, sailing back from Spain through Panama; at Paita Ovalle missed his ship, so he “set out overland for Lima, over an almost trackless region, with little preparation to meet his need for food and water. He arrived in Lima suffering a violent fever from which he died a few days later” (Maggs). Sabin, 31545 (for the book).

Complete set of one of the finest and best-illustrated works on butterflies and moths ever published, here together with the continuations by Snellen van Vollenhoven and Brants, and the rare supplement by Snellen with unpublished manuscript additions. Work on the publication probably began around 1728 and stopped only two hundred years later, when Brants, the author of the third series, died in 1928, leaving his work unfinished. He published only 10 parts of the first volume of the third series. Altogether the set includes 610 plates and 8 frontispieces, all coloured by a contemporary hand. Most plates show a single species of butterfly or moth in flight and on a plant, along with the larva and pupa, and many add the egg and further figures with anatomical details. With library stamp on flyleaf of ad 1 (1st vol.) and on the final pastedown mentioning the purchase at Asher in 1956. Some occasional foxing and browning in ad 1, 2 and 5, otherwise good; ad 3 untrimmed; Bindings and wrappers all somewhat rubbed, but otherwise in good condition and all still firm. A celebrated and beautifully illustrated lepidopterological classic.
