Augsburg, Johann Andreas Pfeffel, [1744]. Small 1mo (42 x 33 cm). With engraved title-page (including the coat of arms of Baron de Firmian) and 24 engraved plates. Contemporary half vellum.

Beitmann, Geschichte der Gartenkunst IX, pp. 417-425; Berlin Kat. 3333; Springer, p. 37; not in De Ganay; Dochnahl; Weinreb. First and only edition of an important, wholly engraved model book for German rococo gardens. "Danreitters Buch gilt als das wichtigste Musterbuch für die deutschen Rokokogärten .... Es enthielt in geschlossener Form seine gültigen Gestaltungsprinzipien. Selbst in Frankreich gab es nichts Vergleichbares" (Beitmann). Several of the plans are likely based on real gardens, for example the plan of the garden of Schloss Klesheim at the end of the 1720s.In 1728 Franz Anton Danreiter (1695-1760) was appointed court gardener and inspector to related buildings by the ducal bishop of Salzburg. He translated Dezallier's La theorie et la pratique du jardinage into German, helping introduce French garden design to German-speaking countries. Danreiter served five successive bishops in Salzburg. Between 1727 and 1735 he also engraved a number of large-scale views of the city which represent a unique documentation of Salzburg in its 18th century baroque glory. The title-page with a reinforced horizontal fold and some smudges, and a few leaves with minor thumbing and foxing; the plates in very good condition. Marbled sides of the binding discoloured and with stains near the outer edges, but still firm and good.

The author; Marcus Annaeus Lucanus (39 AD - 65 AD), better known in English as Lucan was a Roman poet, born in Corduba (modern-day Córdoba), in Hispania Baetica. Despite his short life, he is regarded as one of the outstanding figures of the Imperial Latin period. His youth and speed of composition set him apart from other poets. Lucan was the son of Marcus Annaeus Mela and grandson of Seneca the Elder; he grew up under the tutelage of his uncle Seneca the Younger. Born into a wealthy family, he studied rhetoric at Athens and was probably provided with a philosophical and Stoic education by his uncle. He found success under Nero, became one of the emperor's close friends and was rewarded with a quaestorship. During this time he circulated the first three books of his epic poem, Pharsalia (labelled De Bello civili in the manuscripts), which told the story of the civil war between Julius Caesar and Pompey. The editor; Franz van Oudendorp (1696 - 1761) was a Dutch philologist and professor for History and Rhetoric at the University of Leiden. He became famous for publishing the works of many Latin writers during his life. (Wikipedia)

First edition. Extremely rare run of issues 1 to 37 of the Gazeta de Mexico, covering the period from January 1728 to December 1730; evidently intended as a volume in itself, it was issued with a collective title page, and preliminaries. These are the first numbers; itself, this volume is complete, as issued published under a general title, collating as the copy held at the Biblioteca Nacional de Mexico (OCLC 651344778) and the Universidad Complutense de Madrid. The newspaper, modeled after the European ones, ran with the title of Gazeta until 1739, when it changed it´s name -and printer- for Mercurio de Mexico, running from 1740 to 1742. This is only the second periodical of Mexico, and the first of substance, preceded only by a short run in the 1720´s: "Gaceta de Mexico, y noticias de Nueva España", which only lived through 6 numbers, during 1722; "First Mexican newspaper" (Medina, referring to the 1722 Gazette). Hogal makes a reference to the earlier version of the Gazette, claiming it´s author was Juan Ignacio de Castorena y Ursua. "Extremely rare and curious, being a collection of the first regular newspaper established in Spanish America" (Sabin). Provenance: from the library of Dr. Michael Mathes, small stamps "MM" on verso of title and pp. 52. Medina, Mexico, 2979. Palau, 285011. Sabin, 48483.

Rare first and only edition, luxuriously executed and printed for the author, of a treatise on fortification by the Dutch engineer Cornelis Redelykheid (1728-1787). It centres on methods to improve the masonry and composition of strongholds against hostile artillery and mines, and on fortifying vaults against the most powerful bombs. The large engraved plates with measured drawings include a large fortification plan and several cross-sections, profiles and elevations, many showing vaults. Although the imprint is undated, the author's dedication is dated from Amsterdam, 1759. The present book seems not to have been a normal commercial production but a private publication of the author, probably printed in a small number of copies. With a library and deaccession stamp on the title-page. With some faint foxing in the margins of the plates, not affecting the illustrations. Very good copy, with generous margins and printed on heavy paper. Binding slightly rubbed along the extremities, front hinge slightly cracked, otherwise in good condition.

Tabla Geographica del Reyno de Chile

1728 - Extremely rare Spanish edition of Ovalle´s famous map of Chile, and one of the most important ones of the 17th century. 1728. Antwerp. Juan Bautista Verdussen. 495 x 330 mm. Short tear restored, folded, flattened; strong, and dark impression. 6,000 $ Extremely rare edition of Ovalle´s map of Chile, first published to illustrate the Historia relacion del Reyno de Chile (Rome, 1646), by far rarer than the Italian edition of the same year, easily recognisable for the Italian text, and the iconography utilised inside the map. This map, which is here found in a dark and strong impression, was printed in Verdussen´s edition of Herrera´s Historia general de las Indias Occidentales, itself a very rare book, which employed only this map rather than the usual 14. Ovalle´s work provides a description of the geography and natural history of the province of Chile, including Tierra del Fuego, and describes the native populations who inhabited the region. In particular, his work is a highly important source for the study of the Araucanian Indians, as it deals at length with their social structure, political organization, diet, and domestic life. Ovalle also discusses the early contact period between the Spanish and Indians, the ensuing conflicts, the Spanish settlement, the advent of Catholic missionaries, proselytization and conversion, the role of the Society of Jesus, miracles and apparitions of the Virgin, and numerous other topics. Overall, it is one of the most primary and richest sources of information on the physical and cultural reality of the country, and provides a remarkable amount of information of the Indian ethnology. Ovalle (1601 – 1651) was a Chilean born historian, educator and Jesuit; he lived in Rome from 1642 to 1650 where he had his work published. Complementing Ovalle's history was a wealth of visual images, with renderings of natives, architecture and city life. In the text are fourteen engravings showing Indian customs, Catholic religious imagery, and a map of the city of Santiago. The engraved map, " Tabla Geographica del Reyno de Chile " shows the entire region discussed in the book and is considered one of the most relevant cartographic productions on Chile of the 17th century; it is, additionally, quite a beautiful map. The importance of the geographical information provided, combined with the iconography, make the map one of the most coveted of the region. Alonso de Ovalle (1601 – 1651) was a Chilean born Jesuit Priest, historian, and educator, member of a prominent colonial family; his studies were carried out in Cordoba (Argentina) and finished in Chile, where he would work until the Society sent him to Rome, to solve matters for the Vice-Province of Chile with the General of the Order, staying for several years. His fame was gained through his seminal history of Chile “Historica relacion del reyno de Chile” (1646), immediately translated into Italian. His perilous return to Chile was undertaken in 1650, sailing back from Spain through Panama; at Paita Ovalle missed his ship, so he “set out overland for Lima, over an almost trackless region, with little preparation to meet his need for food and water. He arrived in Lima suffering a violent fever from which he died a few days later” (Maggs). Sabin, 31545 (for the book).

TABULAE ANATOMICAE clarissimi Viri Bartholomaei Eustachii Praefatione ac notis illustravit Joh Maria Lancisius

Rome: Rochus Bernabo at the expense of Laurentii & Thomae Pagliarini, 1728. Hardcover. Very Good. Copperplates (47 full-page numbered but with pl 35 & 37 replaced in good facsimile) + nice large plate of public dissection on TP + 50 large woodcut initials with country & hunting scenes etc. Folio (378x251mm) newer calf with 5 raised bands, spine compartments gilt, gilt rules, black label with gilt titling. Titlepage in red & black XXVIII +79pp +[x] index & publisher's catalogue + 47 leaves of plates ex collation but numbered in the plate 1-47 (a4 mistakenly bound after b4). Bookplate of Dr.F.A. Sondervorst on marbled endpapers. A clean wide margined copy, no tears, very unobtrusive pale foxing to a few pages, some pages rehinged at gutter, a few with marginal dusting/damp marks but not affecting printed area except in index. Pl.20 minor offsetting from facing text page. As usual without the unnumbered page meant to be cut out and used to rule the scale. Fine thick quality paper, impressions clear & dark, and the binding of plain but sympathetic quality. *A splendid anatomical atlas with few equals. The plates were probably engraved in 1552 by Eustachius in collaboration with Agostino de Musis but only the first few were published in his lifetime. They lay forgotten and lost until rediscovered by Giovanni Maria Lancisi but without any accompanying text. Lancisi wrote text and had them published at Rome in 1714. The accuracy of the design & detail of these plates greatly surpass the woodcut drawings of Vesalius as Eustachius used copperplates which allowed for greater precision. The progress of anatomy might have been accelerated had these plates appeared in the 16th century. Eustachius was considered the most scientific anatomist of his time and unlike Vesalius his plates show a composit of anatomical types based on the study of many cadavers where as Vesalius showed the anatomy of one body. Unique to Eustachius' anatomy was the marginal graduated scale which gave the key to the explanatory text. He also juxtaposed anterior and posterior views (see Garrison & Morton 391, Wellcome II 536, Heirs of Hippocrates 201).

      - Beitmann, Geschichte der Gartenkunst IX, pp. 417-425; Berlin Kat. 3333; Springer, p. 37; not in De Ganay; Dochnahl; Weinreb. First and only edition of an important, wholly engraved model book for German rococo gardens. "Danreitters Buch gilt als das wichtigste Musterbuch für die deutschen Rokokogärten .

Jahrhundert ersetzt. Ebert 5583. Brunet II, 459.

Istoria Fiorentina di Dino Compagni dal MCCLXXX al MCCCXII

Firenze: Presso Domenico Maria Manni, 1728. Hard Cover. 99 pages; 24.5 cm. Compagni was an active partisan politician during the contentious period of Florentine history that saw Dante's exile. His history is an important record for the era, 1280-1312. A bookworm started eating the bottom of the back but margins are so wide that he got nowhere near the text before exiting. Bound in contemporary paper boards; very good. Stock#OB642.
