John Spencer
C. Crownfield, E. Jeffrey and W. Thurlbourn. Condition: Good. Two volumes, complete. John Spencer, 1630 - 1693 , was an English clergyman and scholar, Master of Corpus Christi College, Cambridge. An erudite theologian and Hebraist, he is now remembered as the author of De Legibus Hebraeorum, a pioneer work of comparative religion, advancing the controversial thesis that Judaism was not the earliest of mankind's religions. He was educated at the King's School, Canterbury, and Corpus Christi, Cambridge. He graduated B.A. in 1648, M.A. in 1652, B.D. in 1659, and D.D. in 1665. He was chosen a fellow of his college about 1655. After taking holy orders he became a university preacher. In 1667 he was unanimously elected master of Corpus Christi College, a post he held for twenty-six years. He was admitted, on the presentation of the king, to the archdeaconry of Sudbury in the church of Norwich in 1677; and was instituted to the deanery of Ely in 1677. "Benefaction and writing characterized the last decade of Spencer's life. In 1683-5 he issued at Cambridge the first edition of his great work De legibus Hebraeorum ritualibus et earum rationibus, comprising three books 'on the ritual laws of the Hebrews, and the reasons for them'." In this work Spencer derived nearly all his data from classical writers of Greece and Rome, from the Christian Fathers, the works of Josephus, or from the Bible itself. (DNB) Leonard Chappelow, 1683 - 1768, was an English clergyman and orientalist. He was Sir Thomas Adams's Professor of Arabic at the University of Cambridge, from 1720, for life, and also … [Click Below for Full Description]

SWIFT, Jonathan] Lemuel Gulliver
London: Benj. Motte [Benjamin], 1727. Fourth octavo edition. Hardcover. Very good -. Octavo, 4 parts in 2 volumes. Though a stated "Second Edition," which comports with Teerink's second edition, this is understood to be the fourth octavo edition, with 24 leaves of verses preceding the first Part, understood to have been authored by Alexander Pope. Overall about very good in contemporary brown calf, with gilt borders and spines. Marbled endpapers and edges (though the marbling to the edges is almost entirely faded away). Spines heavily faded, with some of the leather dried out, but there are visible remnants of an armorial design on the spine, which very likely corresponds to the armorial bookplate on the front paste-down of each volume (that of "Courtown"). Corners slightly worn. Some outer joints tender, even almost cracked, but holding strong. Externally a somewhat worn, but apparently unrestored example, and uncommon thus. Frontispiece in second state (as called for here), and all other plates are present. Some mild and sporadic internal foxing, and a few very old, faint stains. Mild insect damage to the margins of Part IV, affecting perhaps a dozen pages, not approaching the text, and not visible externally. Altogether a handsome set in original, unrestored condition. This instant classic, having been for over two centuries an essential volume in great book collections (even in its later early editions), is often found with varying degrees of restoration, which this set has been graciously spared. Housed attractively in a custom-made red cloth clamshell box with felt … [Click Below for Full Description]

LOCKE, John
First German translation of Locke’s 'Essay concerning Humane Understanding', pre-dating the Tennemann edition by 40 years, and much rarer. Locke had been very keen to have the Essay available to a wider audience than would be reached by the English editions. Poleyen says his German translation is based on the text in the 1727 Works, but his arrangement of Book I follows Coste’s French translation of 1700. The 170 explanatory notes mainly refer to contemporary German authors. Through this translation Wolff, Mendelssohn, and the Neologians around Reimarus and Lessing were just as much influenced by Locke as by Kant, and indeed the German Enlightenment isn’t intelligible without taking it into account. Attig 378, Yolton 108D. PHYSICAL DESCRIPTION: 4to, engraved portrait frontispiece, [lviii], 768, [24] pp., contemporary half calf over speckled boards, rubbed and worn, uniform light browning throughout with scattered spots, final 100 pp. with a small light waterstain at the lower outer corner, no stamps or inscriptions, a reasonably sound copy of a rare and important book. John Spencer
C. Crownfield, E. Jeffrey and W. Thurlbourn. Bonne Rigobert (1727 - 1795) Paris
Artist: Bonne Rigobert ( - 1795) Paris; issued in: Paris; date: ca 1779. - technic: Copper print; colorit: colored; - condition: Very good; - size (in cm): 47 x 54; - description: Map shows total China with Corea. - vita of the artist: Rigobert Bonne (1727?1795) was one of the most important cartographers of the late 18th century. In 1773 Bonne succeeded Jacques Nicolas Bellin as Royal Cartographer to France in the office of the Hydrographer at the Depôt de la Marine. Working in his official capacity, Bonne compiled some of the most detailed and accurate maps of the period. Bonne?s work represents an important step in the evolution of the cartographic ideology away from the decorative work of the 17th and early 18th century towards a more detail oriented and practical aesthetic. With regard to the rendering of terrain Bonne maps bear many stylistic similarities to those of his predecessor, Bellin. However, Bonne maps generally abandon such common 18th century decorative features such as hand coloring, elaborate decorative cartouches, and compass roses. While mostly focusing on coastal regions, the work of Bonne is highly regarded for its detail, historical importance, and overall aesthetic appeal.

TURGOT, Anne Robert Jacques.
Goldsmith 14728; Kress B2230; Sabin 97456. First separate edition of a revolutionary treatise on the relations between the American colonies and the colonising countries by the French economist Anne Robert Jacques Turgot (1727-1781). He explains his theory that the colonising countries should withdraw from the colonies on a friendly basis allowing the colonies to have their own government and trade with other countries independently. If the colonising countries would grant the colonies independence, they could still have the benefit of trading and settling there. Turgot had composed the treatise already in 1776 at the request of King Louis XVI, who solicited his ministers' opinions regarding the proper French policy toward the American Revolution. It was first published as Reflexions rédigées... in Mazzei's Recherches historiques et politiques (1788).A very good copy, with only a few small spots.

MORELLET, André.
Einaudi 4024; Goldsmith 10507; Kress 6663; WorldCat (4 copies). Fine copy of an interesting and very extensive prospectus, by André Morellet (1727-1819), announcing a new commercial dictionary in 5 folio volumes and calling for subscriptions. He first explains why a new dictionary is needed, extensively describing the first commercial dictionary in Europe of Jacques Savary des Brûlons. He also mentions English dictionaries of commerce. He found all these dictionaries far from complete, omitting many interesting details and says they are not as universal as they claim. So in the present prospectus Morellet proposes a new, complete, universal commercial dictionary, and describes the differences between his planned dictionary and the existing ones. The prospectus is very detailed and well organised, no doubt because he needed to convince his public of the need for such an extensive and therefore probably expensive dictionary. Morellet worked on his dictionary for 20 years before the French Revolution interrupted him, but never published the dictionary itself. With a couple rust spots in the paper and occasional very minor foxing, but otherwise in fine condition. The binding shows a few scrapes and scratches on the boards and is slightly worn at the hinges, but still very good. A remarkably detailed record of a project that unfortunately never came to fruition.

Engraved folding map of France in vol. I. 18th-century armorial bookplate of James Dashwood of Northbrook. Joints expertly repaired with other discreet refurbishments, some light creasing and very occasional minor foxing to contents, tiny chip to vol. II p. 41. A tall, very attractive set. First edition, published posthumously, complete with the rare third volume. Boulainvillier's work, an administrative survey of France, provides an essential account of the political and social structure of the Ancien Régime. As with his other historical works, published in the years following his death in 1722, Boulainvillier strongly supports the right of the parlements and nobility against the absolutism of the king, political views which had led to controversy throughout his life. His work has recently been re-evaluated as an early work of French nationalism, focusing on the nation as opposed to the kingdom, and portraying an ancient, inalienable Frankish constitution which Bourbon absolutism was undermining (Bell, The Cult of the Nation in France, pp. 57–9).
