Working in his official capacity, Bonne compiled some of the most detailed and accurate maps of the period. With regard to the rendering of terrain Bonne maps bear many stylistic similarities to those of his predecessor, Bellin. However, Bonne maps generally abandon such common 18th century decorative features such as hand coloring, elaborate decorative cartouches, and compass roses. While mostly focusing on coastal regions, the work of Bonne is highly regarded for its detail, historical importance, and overall aesthetic appeal.

Bonne Rigobert ( 1727 - 1795 ) Paris
Artist: Bonne Rigobert ( - 1795 ) Paris; issued in: Paris; date: ca 1780. - technic: Copper print; colorit: original colored; - condition: Very good; - size (in cm): 39,5 x 41; - description : Map shows Madagascar and the island France, Mauritius and Bourbon, Reunion. Madagascar- officially the Republic of Madagascar , and previously known as the Malagasy Republic, is an island country in the Indian Ocean, off the coast of East Africa. Madagascar was an important transoceanic trading hub connecting ports of the Indian Ocean in the early centuries following human settlement. The written history of Madagascar began with the Arabs, who established trading posts along the northwest coast by at least the 10th century. From about 1774 to 1824, Madagascar gained prominence among pirates and European traders, particularly those involved in the trans-Atlantic slave trade. Many European sailors were shipwrecked on the coasts of the island, among them Robert Drury, whose journal is one of the few written depictions of life in southern Madagascar during the 18th century. The wealth generated by maritime trade spurred the rise of organized kingdoms on the island, some of which had grown quite powerful by the 17th century. Among these were the Betsimisaraka alliance of the eastern coast and the Sakalava chiefdoms of Menabe and Boina on the west coast. The Kingdom of Imerina, located in the central highlands with its capital at the royal palace of Antananarivo, emerged at around the same time under the leadership of King Andriamanelo.; - vita of the artist: Rigobert Bonne (1727ñ1795) was … [Click Below for Full Description]

Buddei, Io. Francisci (Johann Franz Buddeus) (Text by); Johann Georg Mentzel (Engraved headpieces by)
Lipsiae (Leipzig): Thomae Fritschii, 1727. First edition. Hardcover. g+ to vg. Octavo (8 1/2 x 7"). [14], 730pp (Vol. 1); [731]-1844, [104]pp (Index), 150pp (Addenda) (Vol. 2). Contemporary full vellum. Publisher's device (a winged horse) on each title page. Engraved headpieces by Johann Georg Mentzel (1675-1730). Decorative tailpieces. Written by German Lutheran divine Johann Franz Buddeus (1667-1729), this first edition of "Isagoge historico-theologica ad theologiam universam" reflects the author's close affinity to pietism and purism: For instance, Buddeus states that the purpose of physics is to explicate the natural phenomena mentioned in the Bible (Vol. 1, Chapter 4, part XXIX). The book also deals with the problems methods, and history of theology in a rather revolutionary way for the time. Considered the most universally accomplished German theologian of his time (Schaff), Buddeus' fields of knowledge embraced all branches of theology, and frequently touched on philosophy, history, and politics. In philosophy he professed an eclecticism which rested on a broad historical foundation; but he recognized in Descartes the originator of a new period, and in attacking the "atheist" Spinoza followed especially the upholders of the law of nature, such as Hugo Grotius, Puffendorf, and Thomasius. His theological position was determined by the tradition of Johannes Musäus at Jena, partly through his close relations with Baier; but on another side he was inclined toward Pietism. In his Biblical criticism he did not get so f … [Click Below for Full Description]

(MENCKE, Otto & Johann Burckhard)
Engraved frontis. port. of J.B. Mencke. Title printed in red & black. 8 p.l. (incl. frontis.), 876 pp., [82] leaves. Thick 8vo, orig. limp boards (occasional minor foxing), uncut. Leipzig, J.F. Gleditsch & Son, 1727. Second edition, much enlarged (1st ed.: 1723) and a very lovely copy in original state; this was a very influential catalogue and was considered in its time to be the model of a universal bibliography. The Menckeniana is a catalogue of a specialized library particularly interesting to students of history and the history of learning. It was open to the public. The library was created by Otto Mencke (1644-1707), professor of moral philosophy at Leipzig University and founder of the Acta Eruditorum, the first great German scholarly journal. Mencke bequeathed the library to his son Johann Burckhard (1674-1732), professor of history at the same institution. The first edition of the Menckeniana was exhausted in two years, suggesting how important the catalogue was considered by other scholars. In the Preface to the second and larger edition of 1727 Mencken writes about serving scholars and complains about the difficulty of recovering books that had been lent. There is no suggestion at the time that he contemplated the sale of his library, but within a year he issued small priced catalogues and within five years he had disposed of his books. As we can see, an owner's catalogue can be an incidental means of selling a library. The largest part of the library was purchased in 1730 by Bünau and the remainder was auctioned in 1732. The catalogue contains … [Click Below for Full Description]
