The Altar of Love. Consisting of Poems, And other Miscellanies. By the most eminent Hands. - Now First collected into a Volume

Printed for H. Curll, 1727. Leather Bound. Very Good. London: Printed for H. Curll, 1727. First edition, 8vo, pp. [7], 2-8, [1], 10-16, 1-22, [1], 2-40, [4], 5-56, [2], 1-52, [8], 2-11, [2], 14-26, [1], 28-30, [1], 32, [2], v-viii, [1], 2-12, [1], 14-20, [1], 22-27, [3], 31-39, [1], 1-24, [1], 2-37, [2], 2-17, [1], 19-22, [1], 2-16 (advertisements); illustrated with 3 copper engravings and numerous headpieces, tailpieces, borders, and ornamental capitals. Bound in contemporary calf with polished calf tooled panels on both boards, red spine label. Boards and spine worn with staining to the boards, corners worn through. Slight loss at the head and foot of the spine. A crosshatch pattern has been amateurishly scratched into portions of the polished panels. A few pencil notations on front pastedown. The leaves have occasional staining and toning, several corners turned, straightened. One leaf has bottom corner loss, verso text affected, taking part of "A" on the second to last line and part of "to" on the last line. An unsophisticated copy. This is a compilation of poetry and miscellany, the first of which appears for the first time and is addressed to Dean [Jonathan] Swift by Mr. [Alexander] Pope. The two authors were good friends and primary members in the Scriblerus Club of London. A frontispiece and another copper engraving, which itself appears to have once been a frontispiece, were engraved by Gerard Vandergucht (1696/7-1776). A third plate, also likely a former frontispiece, is uncredited. "This is a made-up miscellany, of which all the parts except the first and the last had a previous independent existence" (Case 340). Among these parts are "A Receipt for a Soup;" an oration first in Latin then translated in English by Joseph Addison; "An Apology for Mr. Moyle;" "The Pleasures of Coition; or the Nightly Sports of Venus" with associated Vandergucht engraving Venus & Adonis; "Popeana;" "The Art of Kissing;" the heroi-comical poem, "The Rape of the Smock;" and many others. While Case’s collation differs slightly from this copy, it appears complete. No recent auction records. OCLC locates 18 copies as of August 2014.

Engraved plan, inset views of Monument and Mary-le-Bow church, tear to old fold in upper margin skilfully repaired. Howgego 73. Attractive plan of London. To the left and right of the title is an explanation in French of London and its principal buildings. Below the plan are two views, one of Monument - the great doric column designed by Wren and Hooke to commemorate the Great Fire; and the other, St Mary-le-Bow church; another Wren masterpiece that was completed in 1680 and considered at the time the second most important church in London, after St Paul's. Also below the plan is a list of the most important streets, hospitals, churches, public buildings, and gateways. The plan bears grid lines for easy reference. Guillaume Danet was the son-in-law of the well-known cartographer Nicholas de Fer. However, Danet was far less prolific a mapmaker, and consequently his maps are rare. Questa importante storia del Giappone ?"gives an account of the ancient and present State and Government of that Empire; of its temples, palaces, castles and other buildings; of its metals, minerals, trees, plants, animals, birds and fishes; of the chronology and succession of the emperors, ecclesiastical and secular; of the original descent, religions, customs, and manufactures of the natives, and of their trade and commerce with the Dutch and Chinese. Together with a description of the kingdom of Siam?". "Prima edizione" di estrema rarità. Cfr.

A System of Magick or a History of the Black Art

London: J. Roberts, 1727. First Edition. Hardcover (Full Leather). Very Good Condition. Being an historical account of mankind's most early dealing with the devil; and how the acquaintance on both sides first began. Contemporary calf neatly rebacked some time ago with the original spine laid back down. Frontis and title slightly browned, scattered light foxing and browning. A clean, attractive copy of the first edition. An interesting work, embodying Defoe's late fascination with the spirit world. Amidst his discussion of the Devil's dealings with mankind, Defoe goes to great pains to separate the magicians of old - the scholars, mathematicians and astronomers of the ancient world - with the mountebanks and actual Devil dealers of the present day. Not marked as such, but from the great Sperber collection of magic books. (12), 403pp. Graesse D352 Size: Octavo (8vo). Previous owner's book-plate inside front cover. Quantity Available: 1. [72] p., engraved title page vignette, 1 leaf of a copper-plate engraved folded map: 4 in-text engravings; 36 cm. Signatures: A-I4 (4to). Modern grey and brown decorative paper over boards with a modern printed black-on-grey label on the front cover reproducing part of the title page as a smaller scale, within a double-ruled border. Text is in 130 numbered columns. Although there is no date of publication, this appears to be from the series of travel accounts printed by Pieter vander Aa in 1727, De Aanmerkenswaardigste en Alomberoemde See- en Land-Reizen. The author, Michael Heberer (1560-1623/33?), has been called der pfälzishe Robinson, or Robinson Crusoe of the Palatinate, because of his unlucky sea voyages recounted here. The engraved map shows Heberer's route around the Mediterranean Sea and the Black Sea. The other engravings depict a ship wreck, prisoners of the moors, the freeing of some prisoners in Alexandria, and the execution of others. Back cover of modern binding slightly soiled; otherwise in Fine Condition. Very scarce.
