A System of Magick or a History of the Black Art

London: J. Roberts, 1727. First Edition. Hardcover (Full Leather). Very Good Condition. Being an historical account of mankind's most early dealing with the devil; and how the acquaintance on both sides first began. Contemporary calf neatly rebacked some time ago with the original spine laid back down. Frontis and title slightly browned, scattered light foxing and browning. A clean, attractive copy of the first edition. An interesting work, embodying Defoe's late fascination with the spirit world. Amidst his discussion of the Devil's dealings with mankind, Defoe goes to great pains to separate the magicians of old - the scholars, mathematicians and astronomers of the ancient world - with the mountebanks and actual Devil dealers of the present day. Not marked as such, but from the great Sperber collection of magic books. (12), 403pp. Graesse D352 Size: Octavo (8vo). Previous owner's book-plate inside front cover. Quantity Available: 1. Shipped Weight: Under 1 kilo. Category: Magic, Paranormal & Occult; Antiquarian & Rare. Inventory No: 044459.

Ongelukkige Voyagie van Michiel Heberer, Van Bretten: door verscheyde Gedeeltens van Asia en Africa, in het Jarr 1581, en vervolgens

[72] p., engraved title page vignette, 1 leaf of a copper-plate engraved folded map: 4 in-text engravings; 36 cm. Signatures: A-I4 (4to). Modern grey and brown decorative paper over boards with a modern printed black-on-grey label on the front cover reproducing part of the title page as a smaller scale, within a double-ruled border. Text is in 130 numbered columns. Although there is no date of publication, this appears to be from the series of travel accounts printed by Pieter vander Aa in 1727, De Aanmerkenswaardigste en Alomberoemde See- en Land-Reizen. The author, Michael Heberer (1560-1623/33?), has been called der pfälzishe Robinson, or Robinson Crusoe of the Palatinate, because of his unlucky sea voyages recounted here. The engraved map shows Heberer's route around the Mediterranean Sea and the Black Sea. The other engravings depict a ship wreck, prisoners of the moors, the freeing of some prisoners in Alexandria, and the execution of others. Back cover of modern binding slightly soiled; otherwise in Fine Condition. Very scarce.

Bibliotheca Menckeniana, quae Autores praecipue Veteres Graecos et Lat. Historiae item Literariae, Eccl. et Civilis, Antiquitatum ac Rei Nummariae scriptores, Philologos, Oratores, Poetas et Codices MSS. complectitur

      - Engraved frontis. port. of J.B. Mencke. Title printed in red & black. 8 p.l. (incl. frontis.), 876 pp., [82] leaves. Thick 8vo, orig. limp boards (occasional minor foxing), uncut. Leipzig, J.F. Gleditsch & Son, 1727. Second edition, much enlarged (1st ed.: 1723) and a very lovely copy in original state; this was a very influential catalogue and was considered in its time to be the model of a universal bibliography. The Menckeniana is a catalogue of a specialized library particularly interesting to students of history and the history of learning. It was open to the public. The library was created by Otto Mencke (1644-1707), professor of moral philosophy at Leipzig University and founder of the Acta Eruditorum, the first great German scholarly journal. Mencke bequeathed the library to his son Johann Burckhard (1674-1732), professor of history at the same institution. The first edition of the Menckeniana was exhausted in two years, suggesting how important the catalogue was considered by other scholars. In the Preface to the second and larger edition of 1727 Mencken writes about serving scholars and complains about the difficulty of recovering books that had been lent. There is no suggestion at the time that he contemplated the sale of his library, but within a year he issued small priced catalogues and within five years he had disposed of his books. As we can see, an owner’s catalogue can be an incidental means of selling a library. The largest part of the library was purchased in 1730 by Bünau and the remainder was auctioned in 1732. The catalogue contains one of the earliest instances of a frontispiece portrait in a library catalogue. The final leaves contain an author index, one of the earliest examples found in a private library catalogue. A very fine copy in original state. ? Folter 528.         Retained manuscript copy of an important letter written in French to the King of Sardinia reporting at length of his meeting with King George II and further meetings with English diplomats.

Londres 21 Juillet 1727 - Folio, written in one neat hand, 9 pages with 3 integral blank pages, final page docketed, has been folded, signed at end by the Count. An important letter written by Count Seyssel d'Aix, Ambassador to London of the King of Sardinia (Victor Amadeus II of Savoy), reporting at length on his meeting with George II only a month after his accession to the throne. The letter goes on to describe a meeting with Secretary of State Viscount Townshend who, remarkably, encourages Sardinia to annex the Austrian-held town of Vigevano in Northern Italy with Townshend implying that British military support would deter any Austrian reaction. This is important evidence of the serious differences of opinion in England concerning the policy to be adopted towards Austria at this time, with Townshend appearing to advocate a strike by Sardinia against Austria- advice for which there is no sense of either royal approval or of Sardinia taking heed. Townshend retired in 1730 after opposing improved relations with Austria, thus removing himself as the final obstacle to the sealing of the Anglo-Austrian Alliance which became the centrepiece of George II's foreign policy. The Kingdom of Sardina at this time included Savoy, the Piedmont and Nice. Vigevano was later ceded to Sardinia by the 1743 Treaty of Worms. [Attributes: Signed Copy]

        POEMS ON SEVERAL OCCASIONS

1727 - BROOME, William. POEMS ON SEVERAL OCCASIONS. London: Bernard Lintot, 1727. Octavo. xiii(3)248pp. First edition. Fine frontispiece portrait engraved by George Vertue. Three pages of publisher's ads. Broome, a country clergyman, contributed the notes to Pope's Iliad (1715-20), and wrote eight of the 24 Books of "Pope's" translation of the Odyssey, published in 1725-6, as well as the Notes. He felt he received insufficient credit or payment for his work, and Samuel Johnson (in Lives of the Poets) said there was "more than coldness" between him and Pope. Facing the first page of text here is Broome's rather caustic "Advertisement:" "The Author has not inserted into this Collection any part of his translation of the Odyssey, published by Mr. Pope: he thought it an Imposition on the Public to swell this volume with Verses taken from a Work that is in the hands of almost every Reader." Johnson quoted a comic verse current at the time: "Pope came off clean with Homer, but they say/ Broome went before and kindly swept the way." Pope lampooned Broome in The Dunciad and Bathos. Johnson called Broome an "excellent versifyer, his lines smooth and sonorous, his diction select and elegant," but admitted that he was not a great poet. Tipped-in on the flyleaf is a description of another copy of this edition from a Sotheby's catalogue of 1870, copied out in longhand. Contemporary calf boards, skillfully rebacked with black morocco spine labels. Scarce
