ROEMER, Friedrich Adolph.
BMC NH, p. 1719; DSB XI, pp. 501-502; Richter, p. 270; Ward 1894. First and only edition of a work on North-German oolite, written by the German geologist Friedrich Roemer. "It provided the first insight into the fossil riches (over 250 new species) and stratigraphic subdivisions of the northwestern German Jurassic, as well as a comparison with the southern German and English Jurassic" (DSB). In his extensive descriptions, Roemer distinguishes the oolite rock from other rocks in the area, and describes the different sorts of oolite, where they can be found and what fossils they contain.Friedrich Adolph Roemer (1809-1869) was a geologist, or geognosist as he called himself, and government official. Although an amateur geologist, his numerous monographs on the Jurassic and Cretaceous in north-western Germany "provided the foundation for knowledge of the faunas and for the present stratigraphy of these geological periods in northern Germany" (DSB).With library stamp. Binding worn at the edges, spine damaged at the head and foot; some browning and foxing; but still in good condition.

CHÂTELAIN, Henri Abraham.
Amsterdam, 1719. Coloured. 380 x 440mm. A fine, dark impression. A map of Japan based on Reland's landmark map of 1715, with Japanese script naming the sixty-six provinces. Under the map is a large cartouche with the shields of the noble families of Japan and a text describing the Japanese sources for his map (although not mentioning Reland). To the right is an inset chart of Nagasaki Harbour. The map was published in the 'Atlas Historique' a seven-volume atlas that is usually attributed to Henri Abraham Châtelain; however Hubbard and other recent writers posit that it was his brother Zacherie who compiled the work. Economia-Jesuítica] Cabrera, Juan de. (Jesuita).
Boerhaave, Herman
London, 1719. Boerhaave, Hermann (1668-1738). A method of studying physick . . . translated into English by Mr. [Robert] Samber. 8vo. [48], 331, [1], [28, index]pp. Text diagrams. London: H. P. for C. Rivington [etc.], 1719. 194 x 119 mm. Gilt-ruled calf ca. 1719, minor repair to spine extremities, hinges a bit tender. One or two corners creased, otherwise fine. First "Official" Edition in English of Boerhaave's Institutiones medicae, originally published in Latin in 1708. Samber's translation is not the first appearance of this work in English, as it was preceded by Joseph Browne's Institutions in Physick (1714; 2nd ed. 1715), a plagiarism of the Institutiones that does not acknowledge Boerhaave as the author.Boerhaave, a member of the faculty of medicine at the University of Leiden, exerted an enormous influence upon the teaching and practice of medicine in Europe. He is credited with systematizing medical knowledge, synthesizing the older Greek medical heritage with the discoveries of the seventeenth century to build a comprehensive contemporary medical doctrine. He also introduced the modern method of clinical instruction, which has remained the basis of medical education to the present day. He was an excellent teacher, attracting many illustrious students, including Albrecht von Haller and Alexander Monro, who helped to spread Boerhaave's methods throughout Great Britain and Europe. Institutiones medicae, Boerhaave's first book, was soon being used in every medical school in Europe, going though numerous authorized and unauthorized editions and translations. It was … [Click Below for Full Description]

Jessnitz, ohne Druck, 1719. Zwei Teile in 1 Band. Titel in typographischer Bordüre, 56 Seiten. "Abraham Jagel`s "Leqah Tov" (Venice, 1595) is the first catechism written by a Jew. In style and format it was modeled on the Catholic catechism of Peter Canisius. Originally, Jagel intended that his work, based on Maimonides` Thirteen Articles of Faith, would be used to educate youth. "Leqah Tov" was translated into Yiddish, German, Latin and English by the end of the 17th century and reprinted more than twenty times in Western and Central Europe by the middle of the 18th century. Beginning at the end of the 18th century it was printed in Eastern Europe another seven times by anonymous maskilim. Many of these editions were bilingual and in one case even trilingual. Jews, Christian Hebraists, and Christian converts from Judaism all published the work. This article endeavors to examine and understand the popularity of the "Leqah Tov" among these diverse groups. The value of the "Leqah Tov" for both Jews and Christians was as a compendium of basic Jewish theological ideas expressed in a form that was accessible and recognizable to Christians. Both Jews and Christian converts used it as a resource to demonstrate to Christians the theolo … [Click Below for Full Description]

POETICAL MISCELLANY.]
London: printed for W. Taylor 1719 - 12mo, engraved frontispiece and pp. xii, 256, [5] contents, [3] advertisements; margin of frontispiece slightly short, and a bit browned at beginning and end of the volume, else a fine clean copy, in contemporary panelled red morocco, spine nicely gilt, gilt edges, marbled endpapers (upper marbled endpaper missing). Third edition: first published in 1704, then with a new edition in 1707 (reissued in 1709). This edition seems genuinely to be a longer and larger selection, with a long poem at the end, Death's Vision, said to be written at the request of John Locke; this appears to be by the Presbyterian minister John Reynolds (1668-1727), and was first printed in 1709. Among the poets not named on the title, there are contributions by Richard Blackmore, Samuel Wesley, Sir Henry Wotton, Nahum Tate and Mr Bowden. The female poets are quite numerous and include, apart from Katherine Philips and Elizabeth Singer Rowe, several unnamed 'young ladies' and Anne Wharton. Provenance. Inscribed on the upper endpaper: 'Eliz. Alicia Brooke her Book the Gift of my Dear Brother Richard Brooke'. This is Elizabeth-Alicia Brooke (later Wilbraham, d. 1737), daughter of Sir Thomas Brooke (1664-1739), 3rd bt, of Norton Priory, Cheshire; she had an elder brother Richard, who died in 1720, so this must have been given to her almost on publication. Below this, in a later but still early hand: 'I suppose this Affectionate Sister is Dead by finding this Book on a Publick Stall. TAYLOR, Brook.
London: R. Knaplock, 1715; 1719. First edition of Taylor's important work on perspective, here bound with its second edition which contains significant new material. "Despite the impulses he received from other mathematicians, Taylor's contribution to the theory of perspective remains highly original. He plucked from the works of others the ideas that were mathematically the most fruitful, and taking these as a starting point, he built up a theory that was far more general, comprehensive and systematic than anything seen before" (Andersen, p. 498). "Like all Taylor's writing, his book on linear perspective was so concise that Bernoulli characterized it as "abstruse to all and unintelligible to artists for whom it was more especially written." Even the second edition, which nearly doubled the forty-two pages of the first, showed little improvement in this matter. Its effect, nevertheless, was very substantial, since it passed through four editions, three translations, and twelve authors who prepared twenty-two editions of extended expositions based on Taylor's concepts. He developed his theory of perspective in a formal and rigorous fashion in a sequence of theorems and proofs. The most outstanding and original of his ideas in this field were his definition and use of vanishing points and vanishing lines for all lines and planes, and of his development of a theory and practice for the inverse problem of perspective that later served as a basis for work by Lambert and for the development of photogrammetry. Taylor also made free use of the idea of associating infinitely distan … [Click Below for Full Description]
