Daniel Defoe
Dublin, Ireland: Patric Dugan. First Irish edition of the sequel to the Adventures of Robinson Crusoe, regarded by many scholars as the first bona fide novel specifically written in English! No copies listed on Worldcat.org/OCLC! Possibly a scarce edition, none for sale at this writing, only a parody printed by the same printer/seller, Patrick Dugan. This book probably had a significantly lower print-run in Ireland than in England. TRINCANO, Didier-Grégoire.
Jordan 3824 (4 copies); Sloos, Warfare 08146; WorldCat (6 copies). Rare first edition of a work on fortification by the French engineer and mathematician Didier-Grégoire Trincano (1719-1792). It is divided into two parts, the first dealing with the building of fortifications, the second with defending and attacking fortifications. The engraved plates show different types of fortification, profiles, various tools, and even a cannon and mortar. Trincano was criticized by some of his contemporaries for favouring newer fortification methods over the classic ones described by Van Coehoorn and Vauban. Trincano worked as an military engineer in the French army and prepared the sieges of Freiburg (1744) and Bergen-op-Zoom (1747) during the War of the Austrian succession (1740-1748).With quire B included twice. First two leaves browned, with some spots throughout, and marginal water stain on page 19, otherwise in very good condition. Binding rubbed along the extremities, but otherwise good.

Matthias Flacius Illyricus; Theodor Suicerus
Frankfort: Pauli, 1719-01-01. Hardcover. Good. 2 volumes in one. Thick folio. Contemporary vellum. Covers soiled. Good, solid binding. All edges red. Title in red and black. Faint, old damp stain to edge. Folding table. <br> Matthias Flacius Illyricus (Matthias Flach) was a noted Lutheran theologian. Flacius?????s legacy can be seen in the survival of Lutheranism as a distinct, uncompromising theology. (Which was of course not a fait accompli, Luther had died in 1546.) It was the intellectual strength and emphasis on truth and scripture of 2nd generation Protestants, such as Flacius, that held together Luther?????s reforms in the face of Catholic opposition. During his life, his strong views and writings concerning the importance of the scripture, church freedom and reassertion of Lutheran criticisms of Roman Catholicism had an outsized influence on the views and success of the German reformation. These writings provided the spiritual and theological guidance that prevented Protestant accommodation with Catholic forces. His work, Clavis scripturae sacrae (A Key to the Sacred Scripture, of the Language of the Sacred Writings) was first published in 1567. Much of his work dealt with how we know the truth and come upon it. For Flacius, the scripture was the source of truth and the path to Christ. Paris: Grégoire Dupuis, 1719. 8vo (261 x 195mm). Engraved frontispiece, engraved vignette on title, and 101 engravings in the text by Cochin, Gillot, Edelinck, Picart, Simoneau and Tardieu after Coypel, Gillot, Edelinck, Picart and Ranc. 18th-century gilt-panelled sprinkled calf. FIRST EDITION, FIRST STATE of the vignette for L'Horoscope du Lion on p. 33, before letters. "The eighteenth century in France has often been called the age of the vignette... It was of Houdart de la Motte's Fables Nouvelles (1719) that Bouchot said 'the whole French school of the eighteenth century may have had its origin in this...book'" (Bland, The History of Book Illustration, p. 200). Modelling his fables after Jean de La Fontaine, Houdart de la Motte's introduction on the genre is of note, setting out rules to be followed based on classical ideals of true likeness, unity, and proper arrangement. The work introduces rococo miniatures and vignettes to book illustration, and the 62 by interior and costume designer Claude Gillon are among a small number of his works used as book illustrations. BERNOULLI, JOANNES [JOHANN]. - [THE FINAL SOLUTION TO THE BALLISTIC CURVE]
Leipzig, Grosse & Gleditsch, 1719. 4to. In: "Acta Eruditorum Anno MDCCXIX". The entire volume offered in contemporary full vellum. Hand written title on spine. A yellow label pasted on to top of spine. A small stamp to title-page and free front end-paper. Library label to pasted down front free end-paper. As usual with various browning to leaves and plates. Pp. 256-270. [Entire volume: (4), 539, four engraved plates.]. ¶ First printing of Bernoulli's exceedingly important paper in which he presented the final (and correct) solution to the ballistic curve. Newton had also occupied himself with the problem but had only solved the law of resistance. In 1718, English mathematician Keill had given Bernoulli the following challenge: "Find the curve which a projectile describes through the air on the simplest hypothesis of uniform gravity and density in the medium, the resistance varying as the square of the velocity". The challenge was more an attempt to humiliate Bernoulli, since it was supposed to be unsolvable, than it was an attempt to advance mathematics. "It was therefore natural the Bernoulli, when he published his solution of Keill's problem and an account of his conduct, should dwell at greater length upon his triumph over the English mathematician than upon his very considerable achievement in mathematics." (Hall, Ballistics in the seventeenth century, Pp. 155)."Bernoulli's criticism of Taylor's Methodus incrementorum was simultaneously an attack upon the method of fluxions, for in 1713 Bernoulli had become involved in the priority dispute between Leibniz and Newton. London 1704.", one of the great books in the history of science. "Newton's Optics did for Light what his Principia had done for Gravitation, namely, placed it on a scientific basis." (E.W. Brown). The translation was brought to light "At the request of Newton, Dr. Samuel Clarke prepared a Latin edition of his Optics which appeared 1706, and he was generously presented by Sir Isaac with GBP 500, or GBP 100 for each of his five children, as a token of the appreciation and gratitude of the author. DeMoivre is said to have secured and taken charge of this translation, and to have spared neither time nor trouble in the task. Newton met him every evening at a coffe-house, and when they have finished their work he took De Moivre home with him to spend the evening in philosophical conversation."(Brewster in his "Newton", … [Click Below for Full Description]

per Bartolomeo Soliani, 1719. In-4 gr. … [Click Below for Full Description]

Alcuni finalini incisi. Rade annotazioni di antica mano. I due volumi sono rilegati insieme.
