Thomas Fuller. MD
london, England: W. J. Innys, 1719. Copy is in used condition good text poor cover and pageblock; doctor hand-wrote other remedies on front end papers. This is a rare book with written-in remedies by a doctor who used the book, perhaps the previous owner who signs in the back dated 1760. Four hand-written pages of remedies on front endpapers. The book was found in Texas by his grandson, who is also a doctor, walled in an old office during a renovation. Calf-skin cover is worn with breaks front and back as shown, on edges, and on spine. The page block is worm eaten but doesn't go into text. The binding is secure but a front endpaper or two are mostly loose. Arranged by remedy, catalog of types on front and index in back. Not ex-library; scarce work that testifies to man's early efforts to document passed-down ideas of healing and Fuller seems to be skeptical of those who practice only for profit. Selling and shipping only in the US; Paypal. Please consult the photos and ask questions if you have them as the book may not be returned.

Expected folds; some tears on folds, discoloration, staining, but text is legible. Quite good for age. This collection of original documents from the eighteenth century focuses on that part of Massachusetts that later became Maine. Pearson commanded a company in the Siege of Louisbourg during King George's War in 1745, and was appointed treasurer to receive and distribute the spoils. He served as sheriff of Cumberland County from 1760 to 1768. From 1770 until the Revolution, he served on the bench of the Court of Common Pleas. TRINCANO, Didier-Grégoire.
Rare first edition of a work on fortification by the French engineer and mathematician Didier-Grégoire Trincano (1719-1792). It is divided into two parts, the first dealing with the building of fortifications, the second with defending and attacking fortifications. The engraved plates show different types of fortification, profiles, various tools, and even a cannon and mortar. Trincano was criticized by some of his contemporaries for favouring newer fortification methods over the classic ones described by Van Coehoorn and Vauban. Trincano worked as an military engineer in the French army and prepared the sieges of Freiburg (1744) and Bergen-op-Zoom (1747) during the War of the Austrian succession (1740-1748).With quire B included twice. First two leaves browned, with some spots throughout, and marginal water stain on page 19, otherwise in very good condition. Binding rubbed along the extremities, but otherwise good.Jordan 3824 (4 copies); Sloos, Warfare 08146; WorldCat (6 copies)..

[TAFEREEL DER DWAASHEID].
Collection of satirical plates and illustrated poems related to Het groote tafereel der dwaasheid, a famous collection of texts and plates satirizing the Englishman John Law, his Mississippi Company, and the international land and trading speculation in worthless shares, known as the South Sea Bubble of 1719-1720, which resulted in an international scandal. Nearly every copy or set has a different makeup. The present set of plates doesn't include the text, but does include a set of 10 very rare broadsheets with satirical poems and woodcut illustrations, according to Muller "the woodcuts especially are very rare, for some I have seen no other copy than the one described here". Other rare items in the collection are the 2 copies of a, non-satirical, engraved map of the coast of South America and the South Sea, in two parts with the titles "De Zuyd-zee" and "De Pacifische of Zuyd zee", not listed by Muller, and a series of 8 engraved prints, with letterpress text, by Jan de Ridder. Many items, including the rare broadsheets, untrimmed, with most deckles intact. Some items slightly worn, especially among the loose prints, but the others in very good condition, only occasionally restored at the folds.l Frans de Bruyn, "Het Groote Tafereef der Dwaasheid and the Speculative Bubble of 1720", in: Eighteenth-Century Life, vol. 24, no. 1 (winter 2000), pp. 62-87; Muller, Historieplaten, pp. 103-132.

Calligraphic specimen by the "Little Man from Nuremberg," Matthias Buchinger, displaying the digitless performer's extraordinary facility with the pen and his characteristic omni-directional and mirror-image calligraphy. The specimen, dating from Buchinger's time living in Ireland, comprises an ornamental head-piece encompassing the name "John Rochfort," with large capital "ABC" on left and on right in reverse, above the following text: "This is Written by / Mathew Buchinger [upside down] / born Without / Hands or Feet [in reverse] / 1719/20 / Dublin [in reverse]." Ricky Jay, in his monograph on Buchinger, surmises that the calligrapher would have prepared such specimens in advance, to be sold at his performances. A blank space would be left for the name of the eventual purchaser, in this case one John Rochfort. Matthias (or Mathew) Buchinger (1674-1740) was born without hands or feet and measured 29 inches tall. Despite this, he was an accomplished calligrapher, artist, magician, and performer. He also married four times and fathered some 14 children. In 2016 the Metropolitan Museum of Art exhibited examples drawn from the greatest private collection of Buchinger's work in Wordplay: Matthias Buchinger's Drawings from the Collection of Ricky Jay. LOCKE, John
1719. The third edition, one of about 800 copies printed (Nidditch). The text is a line-by-line reprint of the second edition with minor adjustments. Yolton 63. Wing L2741. PROVENANCE: 'Ralph Willett (b. 1719), book-collector . matriculated at Oriel College, Oxford, in 1736 but did not take a degree. On his father's death in 1740 estates in the West India islands came to him, and for the rest of his life he was able to gratify his taste for books and pictures. Willett's library was remarkably rich in early-printed books and in specimens of block-printing. Many works were on vellum, and all were in the finest condition. A description of the library was printed in octavo, in French and English, in 1776 [and] a catalogue of the books in the library was distributed by Willett among his friends in 1790. He died without issue in 1795 . His library was sold by Leigh & Sotheby on 6 Dec. 1813, and the sale occupied seventeen days' (ODNB). Inserted loose is a letter typed on Eton College notepaper from the schoolmaster Raef Payne to Oscar Wood, philosophy tutor at Christ Church, Oxford, about the bookplate: ". it would be nice to find a link with a philosophical forebear" (January 1984). 1719. [Click Below for Full Description]
