Keulen, Gerard Van: [Saint Thomas]: [Dutch West Indies]
[Amsterdam], 1719. Sheet map, 22 1/2 x 38 1/2 inches. Modern color. Handsomely matted and framed. Old fold lines, some minor wear. Very good. Large and handsome chart of St. Thomas, now in the U.S. Virgin Islands but then a Dutch colony, made by the famed Van Keulen cartography firm. This map was originally published as part of a 1720 edition of Van Keulen's DE GROOTE NIEUWE VERMEERDERDE ZEE-ATLAS..., a significant work containing one hundred maps and charts (see Phillips). The chart shows the entire island on a very large scale, with its topographical features and harbor depths, as well as the forts and settlements. Two insets on the right show a detailed view of the harbor of St. Thomas and the harbor of the neighboring island of St. John. Along the bottom are five profile elevations, showing the island from different angles. The map is one of the handsomest maps of the island made in the colonial period. Johannes van Keulen enrolled in the Dutch booksellers' guild in 1678 and began publishing sea charts and atlases. That same year his son, Gerard (1678-1726), was born, and he would go on to become a skillful engraver and a significant asset to the firm. "This son was endowed with talent. He was a skillful engraver and proficient in mathematics and navigational science. Gerard was responsible for establishing the scientific basis of the firm of Van Keulen" - Koeman. Gerard van Keulen took over the family business in 1704 and would go on to become the hydrographer for the East India Company in 1714, a prestigious and important office. His son, Johannes, took up … [Click Below for Full Description]

Sabin states the work consists of six regular volumes plus two additional volumes of twenty-nine treaties with separate titlepages for each. This set includes the first of these additional volumes, but not the second. An important collection of treaties, with much material relating to French possessions in America. Frances Davenport identifies eleven treaties for which the Leonard set gives the first or first French printing between 1556 and 1684, as follows: 1) Davenport 20. Treaty between France and Spain, 1556, by which the French agreed to stay out of Spanish America and the Spanish agreed to leave alone French fisheries off the North American coast. 2) Davenport 22. Treaty between France and Spain, 1585. A similar agreement to keep France out of the Indies. 3) Davenport 26. Treaty between France and England, 1603. Bible. N.T. Gospels. English. 1796. Campbell.
Three American "firsts" here, counting that of our caption! For while being additionally the uncommon first printing in America of the Gospels in English in any translation other than the King James or the Douai-Rheims version, this is alsothe first privately accomplished translation of the Gospels printed in America. George Campbell (1719-96) was a minister of the Church of Scotland, theologian, and principal of Marischal College. He wrote a number of theological works, including a defense of miracles in response to David Hume, and was noted for originality of argument as well as charity towards his opponents. This translation of the Gospels was first published in England in 1789; the work consists of a preface and preliminary dissertations, the actual translation, and the notes, with the whole being very scholarly, resorting frequently to the Greek in the dissertations and notes. Provenance: Title-page and contents leaf with early inked inscriptions reading "Jas. Booth."

DESAGULIERS, Jean Theophile
Printed for B. Creake . . .J. Sackfield, and sold by W. Mears 1719 Including two title pages, leaf advertising the English translation of Boerhaave?s work facing the first title, 2 pages of errata, 2 separate publisher?s catalogues, and 10 fine folding engraved plates. Contemporary Cambridge binding, rebacked; generally a very good copy with a few contemporary annotations. Ownership signature of James (?) Hardy on paste - down and first title. First edition of this enlarged account of Desaguliers important mechanical lectures and experiments. He issued his Physico - mechanical lectures in 1717 as an 80 - page tract containing brief abstracts of his lectures. This present work, edited by his student, Paul Dawson, has been noted as a spurious copy and published without the consent of the author. According to the dedication, he states that he had collected these lectures with the author's acknowledgment. The DNB notes that Desaguliers disavowed this; however, he writes in his preface, or advertisement to the reader (as well as including a revised title page) that he "looked over the whole book and corrected every error." Some of the remarkable accounts include "a description of the Air - Pump Mr. Boyle made use of"; different species of barometers, thermometers, and hydrometers; and his work on Isaac Newton. Desaguliers (1683 - 1744) was a noted French scientist who was brought to England as a child. He studied at Oxford under John Keill, spending a good deal of his time reading Newton's Principia. He was an ardent Newtonian and attended a course of lectures given by Gravesan … [Click Below for Full Description]

MOLL, Herman
London: Herman Moll, 1719. Large engraved map measuring 715 x 1205 mm., comprising several conjoined sheets with contemporary handcolouring; strengthened at a few points along old folds, a most attractive map in a handsome timber frame. By a associate of Dampier and Rogers. Splendid map of the known world by Hermann Moll, the renowned mapmaker famous for his personal contact with English buccaneers including William Dampier. Accordingly, this map reflects contemporary knowledge of the Australian continent during the early eighteenth-century.Of German ancestry, Moll migrated to England around 1675 to escape regional warfare in the Hanseatic States. A skilled engraver by trade, he commenced working for established mapmakers including Moses Pitt and Greenville Collins. In 1688 Moll opened his first London store and relied less upon the patronage of other cartographers as his reputation grew. Over the coming decades his output was impressive, including numerous separately issued maps, geographical handbooks, atlases, and pocket globes. By the early eighteenth-century British maritime trade and expansion had assumed unprecedented global significance and required increasingly accurate cartography. Moll is justly famous for his personal contact with famous mariners of the era, including Woodes Rogers and William Dampier, both actively engaged in raiding Spanish gold on the Pacific coast of Mexico and South America (significantly, Dampier served as pilot for Rogers on his ambitious Pacific expedition of 1708-1711).Dampier's knowledge of the farthest regions of East Asia and New Hol … [Click Below for Full Description]

Teilkolorierter Kupferstich v. Herman Moll, ca 1720, Darstellung: 100 x 60 cm
. . Large map by Hermann Moll shows the Netherlands. In the upper left part in-set map of the North Sea between the Netherlands and South England, on the right-hand side views of Amsterdam, Rotterdam, Middelburg, Utrecht, Groningen, Het Loo Palace and a plan of the ancient Roman Castle at the mouth of the Rhine river Arx Britannica (Huis Britten, Brittenberg). This magnificent map was printed by John Bowles of Cornhill, London and published in Moll's 1719 New and Complete Atlas, but it may also have been separately issued earlier. Moll came to London from probably from Bremen around 1678 and by 1688 he had his own shop in Vanley's Court in London's Blackfriars, between 1691 and 1710 at the corner of Spring Gardens and Charing Cross, and when he moved to Beech Street where he remained until his death. In1701 he published his first work A System of Geography. He was publishing atlases and separately issued maps, and from 1710 was also known as a maker of pocket globes. Printed from two plates and joined together in the middle, repaired tears and tiny holes in folds, tiny tears in white margins, colouring slightly pale, otherwise in a good condition. - ********** See www.pahor.de for larger photos! ********** - LANDKARTEN UND ANSICHTEN / MAPS AND VIEWS
