MONTFAUCON, Bernard de.
Paris, Delaulne, Foucault et al., 1719-1724. 15 volumes, folio, titles printed in red & black, engraved portrait, complete with 1380 engraved plates on 1379 sheets, approximately 200 double-page, a few plates lightly browned, occasional small, light water-stain to fore-margin, generally crisp, clean & fresh, contemporary sprinkled calf gilt, lightly rubbed, minor wear to extremities, a very handsome set. A magisterial work by Bernard de Montfaucon (1655 - 1741), a Benedictine monk, widely regarded as one of the founders of modern archaeology. It is a catalogue of ancient Egyptian, Greek, Etruscan and Roman artefacts, sculptures and art. Profusely illustrated it constitutes a pictorial encyclopaedia of gods, heroes, everyday life, domestic customs, religious customs, and military actions of the ancient world. With its imagery of the ancient goddess of Liberty, it came to the attention of Benjamin Franklin and he specifically recommended Montfaucon's guide to ancient images in his 1749 Proposals Relating to the Education of Youth in Pennsylvania. Complete sets in contemporary bindings are increasingly difficult to find. Brunet, III, 1862 - Cohen, 731.

RICHARDSON, Jonathan
London: Printed for W. Churchill, 1719. [16], 153, 174-220pp, 234pp, [2]. With the terminal advertisement leaf. Contemporary polished calf, spine richly gilt, matching morocco lettering-piece. Slightly rubbed, with chipping to lettering-piece, upper joint cracking. Internally a fine crisp copy. Presentation copy, inscribed 'Ex Dono Authoris 26. November 1718, J. Warner', with the slightly later ownership inscription of Robert Warner, 1727, both to blank-fly. Jonathan Richardson Senior (1667-1745), English artist and connoisseur. Intended to educate both aristocratic and middle-class readerships, Richardson's Two Discourses introduced, along with his popularized techniques for artistic appreciation and connoisseurship, clear guidelines for art criticism based upon empirical observations. This present copy was evidently presented by Richardson to John Warner (d. 1722), a prosperous goldsmith, banker and noted art collector. Warner's collection of pictures and prints, including works by Breughel, Pousin, Rembrandt, Rubens, Van Dyck, was explicitly excluded in his will from the remainder of his personal effects beqeathed to his wife, and thus sold by his executors in 1723. A sole surviving copy of the auction catalogue remains, at the British Library, with further excerpts preserved in the Houlditch Manuscript. Interestingly, the sale included as lot 168 'Sr. Rd. Steele, half Length' by the author of this present volume. Now housed in the NPG, this oil on canvas portrait was executed in 1712 by Richardson - perhaps the presentation of this volume thus reflects the gratitude of … [Click Below for Full Description]

CARERI, Giovanni Francesco Gemelli
A Paris : Chez Etienne Ganeau, 1719. First edition. 1719 1ed Careri Voyage Around the World Illustrated PERSIA Iran Shah Archaeology Gio Francesco Gemelli Careri was a 17th-century Italian voyager and traveler who is known to have been the inspiration for the famous ‘Around the World in Eighty Days’. He embarked on a world voyage beginning in Egypt, taking him through the Holy Land, Constantinople Persia, India, and finally in China, where he was assumed to be spying for the Vatican. The voyage then took him to Macau, the Philippines, and eventually to Mexican and Cuba – a true voyage around the world! Careri wrote ‘Voyage del Monde’ as an accurate description of the countries he visited, however, he also wanted to identify the differences between a true voyage and an imaginary journey – a criticism of those who simply fantasized over geography and maps. This volume covers Careri’s adventures in Persia. It deals with genealogies of Persian families, life in Isfahan, accurate descriptions of palaces and royal gardens, interactions among pagan idols, wedding and funeral ceremonies, and navigation on to India. This second tome (complete Persia) includes three illustrations including a plan of the Palace of Darius, Persian antiquities, and the King ‘Shah’ of Persia. Item number: #1196 Price: $399 CARERI, Giovanni Francesco Gemelli Voyage Du Tour Du Monde : Enrichi d'un grand nombre de Figures : tome second de la Perse A Paris : Chez Etienne Ganeau, 1719. Spine in six compartments, red leather lettering label, gilt; board tooled and stained in a 'Cambridge' design. Illustrated with 5 numbered plates, three of them folding, illustrating the solar system, a globe, eclipses, etc. And with an additional folding plate of the Orrery. Harris (1666-1719) was a cleric and lecturer in science and also a member of the Royal Academy. Clock makers George Graham and Thomas Tompion built the first modern orrery around 1704 in England. Graham gave the first model, or its design, to the celebrated instrument maker John Rowley of London to make a copy for Prince Eugene of Savoy. Rowley was commissioned to make another copy for his patron Charles Boyle, 4th Earl of Orrery, from which the device took its name in English. WE note a nearly imperceptible tidemark extending about half an inch. The hinges are cracked but strong, and seem to have been repaired internally at an early date. A 1723 ownership signature is on the front free end paper, and a second signature, partially cut away, but dated 1816, is across the top margin of the title page. HOUDART DE LA MOTTE, Antoine (1672-1731)
Paris: Grégoire Dupuis, 1719. 8vo (261 x 195mm). Engraved frontispiece, engraved vignette on title, and 101 engravings in the text by Cochin, Gillot, Edelinck, Picart, Simoneau and Tardieu after Coypel, Gillot, Edelinck, Picart and Ranc. 18th-century gilt-panelled sprinkled calf. Rebacked; P4 with small tear with loss in corner not affecting text, S4 with short marginal tear with early repair, a few leaves lightly spotted. Provenance: William Cavendish, VII Duke of Devonshire (armorial bookplate on verso of flyleaf); purchased from Christie's London, 30 September 1981, lot 236. FIRST EDITION, FIRST STATE of the vignette for L'Horoscope du Lion on p. 33, before letters. "The eighteenth century in France has often been called the age of the vignette... It was of Houdart de la Motte's Fables Nouvelles (1719) that Bouchot said 'the whole French school of the eighteenth century may have had its origin in this...book'" (Bland, The History of Book Illustration, p. 200). Modelling his fables after Jean de La Fontaine, Houdart de la Motte's introduction on the genre is of note, setting out rules to be followed based on classical ideals of true likeness, unity, and proper arrangement.
The work introduces rococo miniatures and vignettes to book illustration, and the 62 by interior and costume designer Claude Gillon are among a small number of his works used as book illustrations. Castel de Saint-Pierre, l'Abbé
Amsterdam, chez Du Villard & Changuion, 1719. One volume in 12mo ; pp. (20), 21-265, (6) table des matières, (13) catalogue ; recently bound to style in full brown calf, raised bands, two red gilt lettering-pieces, no rubbing or bumping, sprinkled edges, title printed in red and black, pages age-toned but clean and crisp, a nice copy. Scarce second edition, first published in 4to in 1718. He immediately encountered a massive reaction that affected his membership in the Académie Française. This second augmented edition contains Saint-Pierre’s responses to thirty-seven objections raised by his opponents and two letters he wrote to protest his exclusion from the Academy. JAILLOT, Alexis- Hubert (1632-1712). - Bernard Jean Hyacinthe JAILLOT [1673-1739, publisher]
Paris 1719 - Copper-engraved map by Cordier on laid, watermarked paper, hand-coloured in outline, in very good condition. A handsome copy of Burden's 5th issue of Jaillot's map of North America, revised to incorporate the best available information from Guillaume De L'Isle and others, and with strong outline color Hubert Jaillot's son Bernard carried on the family cartography business upon the death of his father in 1712, and in 1713, he issued a much revised and improved map of North America, incorporating the new geographic knowledge procured by De L'Isle and De Fer. The trials of exploration to ascertain actual facts were harsh and often not well rewarded, nor were the explorers always able to know: note LaSalle's account of the Mississippi wandering into Texas before finding the Gulf. Nevertheless, this revised edition of Hubert Jaillot's 17th century map incorporates a great deal of important geographical information: a greatly improved delineation of the Great Lakes, the addition of tributary rivers to the Mississippi, the re-routing of the Rio Grande (R. del … [Click Below for Full Description]
