HARRIS, John (c.1667-1719)
London: Printed and Sold by D. Midwinter, 1719. [Kent Topography/Cartography]. FIRST EDITION. Folio (40 x 29cm), pp.[2]; iv, Dedication; iv, Preface; ii, Ode to Kent; iv, List of Subscribers; 592; xl. Illustrated with 43 fine engravings, of which 39 are double-page and/or fold-out. Includes fine panoramas of Rochester and Tunbridge Wells, the map of Romney Marsh, the map of the Isle of Thanet and a latin version of the same. A county map of Beacons is included, but not the large folding county map. Elegantly bound in a late Georgian or Victorian polished and panelled calf with gilt-edges in the rough, by G.J. Andrews Binder of Bloomsbury. Contemporary ownership of David Polhill, many views exquisitely conserved at the time of rebinding, portrait frontispiece window-mounted at that time, subsequent repair to joint. Shows well. Volume One was all that was published, being issued shortly after Harris' death. A superb collection of views of the great Kentish houses, by Kip and Badeslade. Clearly given attention and expenditure in the nineteenth century, this is a well-preserved example.

Catchpenny print. Children's print of the history of Robinson Crusoe, showing how through God's power Robinson survives his shipwreck on an island, and keeps himself alive by farming, hunting and gathering supplies. He saves a young man from cannibals, and when a ship appears, he manages to stop the mutiny and return home. The story of Robinson Crusoe was very successful with publishers of Dutch Children's prints. Already one year after the appearance of Defoe's The Life and strange surprising adventures of Robinson Crusoe (London 1719), a Dutch translation was made, and later Dutch versions of the story were published with a Robinson from Holland (1743), from Walcheren (1752) and The Hague (1758). Although neither the English nor the Dutch versions were intended for children, the story became a very popular topic for children's prints in the nineteenth century (De Meyer p. 519).Inscription in ink on verso: ‘Hedzer Fokkes Fokkema / Gekregen den 15 Mei 1832 / Leert met spoed dan gaat het goed'. The print was likely a gift for a Frisian boy, as a reward and encouragement for studying.Gorinchem, Jacobus Noorduyn (1819 - 1840), lettered ‘P' at the top right. 16 woodcut illustrations (each ca. 55 x 53 mm) on paper; hand coloured in blue and yellow; under each image a 4-line verse; total: 415 x 325 mm; Pro Patria Watermark; folded three times, some small holes on the folds, a red stain in the top margin and in the bottom margin.

On y trouve 102 vignettes à l'eau-forte (env. [Attributes: Hard Cover]

DARBY, John, Bookseller.
N.P. N.D, 1719. 18cm. 16pp, head & tail-piece, decorated capitals. Bound after James Torr's 'Antiquities of York City 1719', possibly indicating the issue year of Darby's catalogue. Contemporary full sprinkled-calf gilt, raised bands, new calf gilt spine label. Joints repaired. Bookplates of Joseph Sedgwick and Winchester College to front endpapers. This precise issue not apparent in ESTC, where two 16pp Darby catalogues are listed. Citation no. T168600 [1717?] looks a stong possibility since the two general notes conform; however the uncontrolled note does not apply since page 8 lists 'A Compleat History of the Turks . to the year 1718.' ARBUTHNOT, JOHN].
Printed for James Roberts in Warwick Lane., London, 1719. 4to. 4.75 x 7.5 inches. 22 pp. Half-title. Disbound pamphlet. Early practice of a copperplate hand and numerals, largely confined to the two blank pages on the verso of half-title and title. Decorated by printer's devices on half-title and headpiece vignette and initial. An answer to the satire on life a thousand years hence, entitled A Dedication to a Great Man, wrongly attributed at the time to Jonathan Swift, who disclaimed authorship and now considered to be the the work of Thomas Gordon (d. 1750). The reply is known to be the work of John Arbuthnot. An amusing satirical letter by one who 'can write a Pamphlet in half an Hour.' It concludes by the author 'foreseeing the day 'when it will be as unfashionable to be Witty, as 'tis now to be Good-natur'd or Sober.' John Arbuthnot (1667-1735), satirist and physician, was a Scot who moved to London, where he practised as a doctor, later becoming a physician-in-ordinary to Queen Anne. He compiled works on mathematics and was elected FRS in 1704. Arbuthnot was an intimate of Swift and Pope and author of the John Bull pamphlets, which satirised the War of Spanish Succession.
