GIGLI (Girolamo).
Siena, Francesco Quinza, 1719. in-4. Frontispice. 2ff. 213pp.

Inscribed by Edward Gordon Craig (1957), Venice. Octavo. Original stitched wrappers. Sl. Staining. (a) - (b)8; 31, (1) pp. Four folding engraved plates (230 x 360 mm.), some typographic ornaments. Dampstains throughout from fore margin extending into 1" of text. Plates clean. An architectural essay on the Accademia Olimpica and its theater, with four folding engravings of the theater. The theater of the Accademia Olimpica was begun in 1580 by Andrea Palladio (1508?-1580), who died during construction, and finished by his son Scilla in 1584, while sets were designed by the great Venetian architect Vincenza Scamozzi (1552-1616). The building was renowned for its beauty, so much so that when Goethe first went to Venice in 1786 it was one of the first places he visited. The four engraved plates depict the theater from different architectural views: the plan, followed by an exterior elevation, a cutaway view, and an interior elevation of the rear of the theater showing the risers and the statue gallery above. All are signed "Ant. Mugnoni" or "A. M." for Antonio Mugnoni, and are dated 1788. This work was first published by G. Rossi at Venice in 1790, next by V. Mosca (or Giuliani??) at Venice in 1804, and later in 1842. It was reprinted in Venice in 1989 by the Accademia Olimpica, with a note by historian Loredana Olivato. AULNOY, Marie Catherine Junelle de Berneville, Countess d'
London: W. Wilkins for J Peele, 1719. First English Language Edition. 8vo, pp. (8),382pp. Woodcut device on title. Several woodcut head & tail pieces and historiated initials.Bound in Contemporary calf, ruled in gilt, nicely rebacked, red morocco spine label. First few leaves lightly soiled with an old water stain at blank bottom margin. Contemporary engraved bookplate of John Corbet on front pastedown and an ownership of Frances Corbet signature dated August 8, 1744. Very scarce. McBurney #106; ESTC (RLIN),; T143015. Aulnoy (1650-1705) is possibly one of the most enigmatic figures of her age. After framing her husband in an attempt to get rid of him, D'Aulnoy's accomplices were executed and she was forced to flee with her mother. Afterwards, she may have served as a double agent for the French and Spanish, only to reappear in Paris in 1685. After publishing her first novel, she gained respectability and established a salon in Paris. She published some of the first fairy tales and by the close of the 1600's, Madame d'Aulnoy stood at the height of her literary fame ... While Madame d'Aulnoy was not the leading literary figure of her day ... her works display linguistic talent, an unsettling sense of humor, a gift for rapid narration and parody, an ability to analyze emotions with finesse and delicacy, and a quick ear for coining arresting new words.[Wilson, p. 62].

Bauhin, Gaspard
Lyon, Nicolas De Ville, 1719. Esemplare in buone condizioni, lievi bruniture. On l'attribue à Gaspard Bauhin...

1719 - die Stadt des H. Augustin in Florida (St. Augustine, Florida- urban views- birds-eye prospect views of America) Issued Frankfort, Germany, 1719 for A. M. Mallet. Charming little early 18th century copper engraved miniature prospect view print, with pleasing full hand color. The Fort with Christian cross prominently seen in detail at right, urban view with many individual houses and church steeple, tall mast ship in foreground harbor, natives viewing scene across bottom of image. The image has a near folk-art feel, a representational style unique to this historical moment. Utterly unlike anything produced today and of modern aesthetic appeal for this very reason. Among the earliest published views relating to the state of Florida a collector can hope to acquire. Among the incunabula of Florida printed images. Mostly clean and well preserved example, trivial blank margin corner staining & edge toning which visually testifies to the age and patina. Sheet measures c. 5" x 8". Printed area measures c. 4 1/2" x 6". Tooley's Dictionary of Mapmakers, v. 3. p.196[R12747]

HARRIS, John (c.1667-1719)
London: Printed and Sold by D. Midwinter, 1719.. [Kent Topography/Cartography]. FIRST EDITION. Folio (40 x 29cm), pp.[2]; iv, Dedication; iv, Preface; ii, Ode to Kent; iv, List of Subscribers; 592; xl. Illustrated with 43 fine engravings, of which 39 are double-page and/or fold-out. Includes fine panoramas of Rochester and Tunbridge Wells, the map of Romney Marsh, the map of the Isle of Thanet and a latin version of the same. A county map of Beacons is included, but not the large folding county map. Elegantly bound in a late Georgian or Victorian polished and panelled calf with gilt-edges in the rough, by G.J. Andrews Binder of Bloomsbury. Contemporary ownership of David Polhill, many views exquisitely conserved at the time of rebinding, portrait frontispiece window-mounted at that time, subsequent repair to joint. Shows well. Volume One was all that was published, being issued shortly after Harris' death. A superb collection of views of the great Kentish houses, by Kip and Badeslade. Clearly given attention and expenditure in the nineteenth century, this is a well-preserved example.
