AULNOY, Marie Catherine Junelle de Berneville, Countess d'
London: W. Wilkins for J Peele, 1719. First English Language Edition. 8vo, pp. (8),382pp. Woodcut device on title. Several woodcut head & tail pieces and historiated initials.Bound in Contemporary calf, ruled in gilt, nicely rebacked, red morocco spine label. First few leaves lightly soiled with an old water stain at blank bottom margin. Contemporary engraved bookplate of John Corbet on front pastedown and an ownership of Frances Corbet signature dated August 8, 1744. Very scarce. McBurney #106; ESTC (RLIN),; T143015. Aulnoy (1650-1705) is possibly one of the most enigmatic figures of her age. After framing her husband in an attempt to get rid of him, D'Aulnoy's accomplices were executed and she was forced to flee with her mother. Afterwards, she may have served as a double agent for the French and Spanish, only to reappear in Paris in 1685. After publishing her first novel, she gained respectability and established a salon in Paris. She published some of the first fairy tales and by the close of the 1600's, Madame d'Aulnoy stood at the height of her literary fame ... While Madame d'Aulnoy was not the leading literary figure of her day ... her works display linguistic talent, an unsettling sense of humor, a gift for rapid narration and parody, an ability to analyze emotions with finesse and delicacy, and a quick ear for coining arresting new words.[Wilson, p. 62].

Bauhin, Gaspard
Lyon, Nicolas De Ville, 1719. Esemplare in buone condizioni, lievi bruniture. All'occhietto, leggiamo la seguente annotazione, di mano coeva: "Cet ouvrage est connu sous le nom trivial de Petit Bauhin. On l'attribue à Gaspard Bauhin...

1719 - die Stadt des H. Augustin in Florida (St. Augustine, Florida- urban views- birds-eye prospect views of America) Issued Frankfort, Germany, 1719 for A. M. Mallet. Charming little early 18th century copper engraved miniature prospect view print, with pleasing full hand color. The Fort with Christian cross prominently seen in detail at right, urban view with many individual houses and church steeple, tall mast ship in foreground harbor, natives viewing scene across bottom of image. The image has a near folk-art feel, a representational style unique to this historical moment. Utterly unlike anything produced today and of modern aesthetic appeal for this very reason. Among the earliest published views relating to the state of Florida a collector can hope to acquire. Among the incunabula of Florida printed images. Mostly clean and well preserved example, trivial blank margin corner staining & edge toning which visually testifies to the age and patina. Sheet measures c. 5" x 8". Printed area measures c. 4 1/2" x 6". Tooley's Dictionary of Mapmakers, v. 3. p.196[R12747]

Catchpenny print. Children's print of the history of Robinson Crusoe, showing how through God's power Robinson survives his shipwreck on an island, and keeps himself alive by farming, hunting and gathering supplies. He saves a young man from cannibals, and when a ship appears, he manages to stop the mutiny and return home. The story of Robinson Crusoe was very successful with publishers of Dutch Children's prints. Already one year after the appearance of Defoe's The Life and strange surprising adventures of Robinson Crusoe (London 1719), a Dutch translation was made, and later Dutch versions of the story were published with a Robinson from Holland (1743), from Walcheren (1752) and The Hague (1758). Although neither the English nor the Dutch versions were intended for children, the story became a very popular topic for children's prints in the nineteenth century (De Meyer p. 519).Inscription in ink on verso: ‘Hedzer Fokkes Fokkema / Gekregen den 15 Mei 1832 / Leert met spoed dan gaat het goed'. The print was likely a gift for a Frisian boy, as a reward and encouragement for studying.Gorinchem, Jacobus Noorduyn (1819 - 1840), lettered ‘P' at the top right. 16 woodcut illustrations (each ca. 55 x 53 mm) on paper; hand coloured in blue and yellow; under each image a 4-line verse; total: 415 x 325 mm; Pro Patria Watermark; folded three times, some small holes on the folds, a red stain in the top margin and in the bottom margin.De Meyer p. 260, Boerma p. 800 (Noorduyn P).
