DARBY, John, Bookseller.
N.P. N.D, 1719. 18cm. 16pp, head & tail-piece, decorated capitals. Bound after James Torr's 'Antiquities of York City 1719', possibly indicating the issue year of Darby's catalogue. Contemporary full sprinkled-calf gilt, raised bands, new calf gilt spine label. Joints repaired. Bookplates of Joseph Sedgwick and Winchester College to front endpapers. This precise issue not apparent in ESTC, where two 16pp Darby catalogues are listed. Citation no. T168600 [1717?] looks a stong possibility since the two general notes conform; however the uncontrolled note does not apply since page 8 lists 'A Compleat History of the Turks . to the year 1718.' ARBUTHNOT, JOHN].
Printed for James Roberts in Warwick Lane., London, 1719. 4to. 4.75 x 7.5 inches. 22 pp. Half-title. Disbound pamphlet. Early practice of a copperplate hand and numerals, largely confined to the two blank pages on the verso of half-title and title. Decorated by printer's devices on half-title and headpiece vignette and initial. An answer to the satire on life a thousand years hence, entitled A Dedication to a Great Man, wrongly attributed at the time to Jonathan Swift, who disclaimed authorship and now considered to be the the work of Thomas Gordon (d. 1750). The reply is known to be the work of John Arbuthnot. An amusing satirical letter by one who 'can write a Pamphlet in half an Hour.' It concludes by the author 'foreseeing the day 'when it will be as unfashionable to be Witty, as 'tis now to be Good-natur'd or Sober.' John Arbuthnot (1667-1735), satirist and physician, was a Scot who moved to London, where he practised as a doctor, later becoming a physician-in-ordinary to Queen Anne. He compiled works on mathematics and was elected FRS in 1704. Arbuthnot was an intimate of Swift and Pope and author of the John Bull pamphlets, which satirised the War of Spanish Succession. MONTFAUCON, Bernard de.
Paris Delaulne Foucault et al. -1724, 1719. 15 vol. Folio. Titles printed in red & black, engraved portrait, complete with 1380 engraved plates on 1379 sheets, approximately 200 double-page; a few plates lightly browned, occasional small, light waterstaining to fore-margin, generally crisp, clean & fresh. Contemporary sprinkled calf gilt; lightly rubbed, minor wear to extremities. Magisterial work by the Benedictine monk Bernard de Montfaucon (1655–1741), one of the founders of modern archaeology. The present work is a catalogue of ancient Egyptian, Greek, Etruscan and Roman artefacts, sculptures and art. Profusely illustrated, it constitutes a pictorial encyclopaedia of the gods, heroes, everyday life, religious customs, and military actions of the ancient world. The book's images of the ancient goddess of liberty brought it to the particular attention of Benjamin Franklin. Complete sets in contemporary bindings are increasingly difficult to find. 1719. Catchpenny print with the story of Robinson Crusoe, showing how the ‘foolish’ Robinson survives after his shipwreck, by farming, hunting and gathering supplies. Despite his hardship, all ends well when a ship appears to take him home. The story of Robinson Crusoe was very successful with publishers of Dutch Children’s prints. Already one year after the appearance of Defoe’s The Life and strange surprising adventures of Robinson Crusoe (London 1719), a Dutch translation was made, and later Dutch versions of the story were published with a Robinson from Holland (1743), from Walcheren (1752) and The Hague (1758). Although neither the English nor the Dutch versions were intended for children, the story became a very popular topic for children’s prints in the nineteenth century (De Meyer p. 519).Wijnhoven printed several fairy tales and stories that had become popular in the Netherlands at the start of the 19th century, such as Little Red Riding Hood (nr. 20).Rotterdam, T. J. Wijnhoven-Hendriksen (1819 - 1849); via T.J. Jansen, Sluis, mentioned on the print: ‘Te Sluis in Vlaanderen, bij T.J. Jansen.’ (Jansen is not mentioned in De Meyer and Boerma); numbered ‘No. 27.’ in upper right corner. 16 woodcut illustrations (each ca. 55 x 50 mm) on mechanically produced paper; hand coloured in blue and red; under each image a 2-line verse, narrating the story; total: 400 x 330 mm; folded twice; tape ghosts at the edges from previous mounting.Meyer p. 343, Boerma p. 839 (Wijnhoven 27). La Motte, (Antoine Houdard de)
Paris, (Jean Baptiste Coignard for) Grégoire Dupuis, 1719. - With engr. frontispiece, after Coypel by Tardieu, engr. title-vignette, and 101 engr. vignettes in the text by Gillot, Picart, a.o. XLII, 358, (2) pp. Royal 4to. Contemp. calf over 5 raised bands. Spine gilt with label. Marbled end-papers (front hinge starting). First edition (large paper copy) of La Motte’s 100 fables, divided into five books, together with his theoretical "Discours sur la fable". La Motte (1672–1731), a progressive exponent in the second so called "querelle des anciens et des modernes", can be considered the most important fabulist after La Fontaine. His personal aim was to achieve the renown of both Aesop and La Fontaine at the same time. With the introducing dedicatory fable "La Belle et le miroir", La Motte tries not only to honour and advise the young King Louis XV but also to give an example of his own stilistic ideals like "vraisemblence", "unité", and "bienséance". The copper vignettes of which two thirds are designed and engraved by Watteau’s master Claude Gillot (1673–1722) are an early highlight of French rococo illustration. "The unerring taste, the originality of composition, and a great ability to create with a few strokes a background and a mood, all these acted together to bring forth one of the most beautiful illustrated books of the 18th century" (Fürstenberg, Das französische Buch im 18. Jahrhundert, p. 53). In some later copies an index printed on different paper is found at the end of the preface. Our copy has a title index in a contemporary hand at the en … [Click Below for Full Description]

RICHARDSON, Jonathan
London: Printed for W. Churchill, 1719. [16], 153, 174-220pp, 234pp, [2]. With the terminal advertisement leaf. Contemporary polished calf, spine richly gilt, matching morocco lettering-piece. Slightly rubbed, with chipping to lettering-piece, upper joint cracking. Internally a fine crisp copy. Presentation copy, inscribed 'Ex Dono Authoris 26. November 1718, J. Warner', with the slightly later ownership inscription of Robert Warner, 1727, both to blank-fly. Jonathan Richardson Senior (1667-1745), English artist and connoisseur. Intended to educate both aristocratic and middle-class readerships, Richardson's Two Discourses introduced, along with his popularized techniques for artistic appreciation and connoisseurship, clear guidelines for art criticism based upon empirical observations. This present copy was evidently presented by Richardson to John Warner (d. 1722), a prosperous goldsmith, banker and noted art collector. Warner's collection of pictures and prints, including works by Breughel, Pousin, Rembrandt, Rubens, Van Dyck, was explicitly excluded in his will from the remainder of his personal effects beqeathed to his wife, and thus sold by his executors in 1723. A sole surviving copy of the auction catalogue remains, at the British Library, with further excerpts preserved in the Houlditch Manuscript. Interestingly, the sale included as lot 168 'Sr. Rd. Steele, half Length' by the author of this present volume. Now housed in the NPG, this oil on canvas portrait was executed in 1712 by Richardson - perhaps the presentation of this volume thus reflects the gratitude of … [Click Below for Full Description]

CARERI, Giovanni Francesco Gemelli
A Paris : Chez Etienne Ganeau, 1719. First edition. 1719 1ed Careri Voyage Around the World Illustrated PERSIA Iran Shah Archaeology Gio Francesco Gemelli Careri was a 17th-century Italian voyager and traveler who is known to have been the inspiration for the famous ‘Around the World in Eighty Days’. He embarked on a world voyage beginning in Egypt, taking him through the Holy Land, Constantinople Persia, India, and finally in China, where he was assumed to be spying for the Vatican. The voyage then took him to Macau, the Philippines, and eventually to Mexican and Cuba – a true voyage around the world! Careri wrote ‘Voyage del Monde’ as an accurate description of the countries he visited, however, he also wanted to identify the differences between a true voyage and an imaginary journey – a criticism of those who simply fantasized over geography and maps. This volume covers Careri’s adventures in Persia. It deals with genealogies of Persian families, life in Isfahan, accurate descriptions of palaces and royal gardens, interactions among pagan idols, wedding and funeral ceremonies, and navigation on to India. This second tome (complete Persia) includes three illustrations including a plan of the Palace of Darius, Persian antiquities, and the King ‘Shah’ of Persia. Harris, John
London: T. Wood for Benjamin Cowse, 1719. First edition. Hardcover. Very good. 8vo. vi, 184pp. Contemporary paneled calf. Spine in six compartments, red leather lettering label, gilt; board tooled and stained in a 'Cambridge' design. Illustrated with 5 numbered plates, three of them folding, illustrating the solar system, a globe, eclipses, etc. And with an additional folding plate of the Orrery. Harris (1666-1719) was a cleric and lecturer in science and also a member of the Royal Academy. Clock makers George Graham and Thomas Tompion built the first modern orrery around 1704 in England. Graham gave the first model, or its design, to the celebrated instrument maker John Rowley of London to make a copy for Prince Eugene of Savoy. Rowley was commissioned to make another copy for his patron Charles Boyle, 4th Earl of Orrery, from which the device took its name in English. WE note a nearly imperceptible tidemark extending about half an inch. The hinges are cracked but strong, and seem to have been repaired internally at an early date. A 1723 ownership signature is on the front free end paper, and a second signature, partially cut away, but dated 1816, is across the top margin of the title page. Otherwise this is in very good condition. ESTC T113347.
