A New & Correct Map of the Whole World

London: Herman Moll, 1719. Large engraved map measuring 715 x 1205 mm., comprising several conjoined sheets with contemporary handcolouring; strengthened at a few points along old folds, a most attractive map in a handsome timber frame. By a associate of Dampier and Rogers. Splendid map of the known world by Hermann Moll, the renowned mapmaker famous for his personal contact with English buccaneers including William Dampier. Accordingly, this map reflects contemporary knowledge of the Australian continent during the early eighteenth-century.Of German ancestry, Moll migrated to England around 1675 to escape regional warfare in the Hanseatic States. A skilled engraver by trade, he commenced working for established mapmakers including Moses Pitt and Greenville Collins. In 1688 Moll opened his first London store and relied less upon the patronage of other cartographers as his reputation grew. Over the coming decades his output was impressive, including numerous separately issued maps, geographical handbooks, atlases, and pocket globes. By the early eighteenth-century British maritime trade and expansion had assumed unprecedented global significance and required increasingly accurate cartography. Moll is justly famous for his personal contact with famous mariners of the era, including Woodes Rogers and William Dampier, both actively engaged in raiding Spanish gold on the Pacific coast of Mexico and South America (significantly, Dampier served as pilot for Rogers on his ambitious Pacific expedition of 1708-1711).Dampier's knowledge of the farthest regions of East Asia and New Holland was unparalleled, being the first Englishman to set foot on Australian soil in 1688. Moll engraved charts for the published accounts of both Rogers and Dampier; in return they supplied him with valuable first-hand geographical information, especially concerning Australasia, the South Pacific and East Indies. This gave Moll a competitive advantage over his competitors and contributed greatly to his reputation. Some of this rivalry is evident in the note engraved upon this map attacking Moses Pitt, the London mapmaker who had employed Moll many years earlier after his arrival in London. By 1719 there was clearly little affection between the two men, and Moll demolishes the New English Atlas recently published by Pitt with vitriolic enthusiasm: 'Notwithstanding the vast incouragement Pitts had by the subscriptions of Persons of Quality and others; he had so little regard to do 'em iustice...he purchased an impression of old and incorrect maps for his Pretended new atlas; adding only a few poorly perform'd Plates to it which I hope will be a sufficient caution to everybody, not to take anything of this kind for the future upon Trust and unexamined.' Indeed, Moll has since acquired a following amongst cartographic collectors for the verbose - and sometimes eccentric - commentaries he engraved upon his maps.In addition to its historical and cartographic significance, this world map is unusually attractive with a splendid large cartouche featuring African and Ottoman warriors, a native American archer and a European knight clustered around a cantankerous old lion.

His Principes de l'accompagnement was no less successful, and its approach was apparently considered useful enough to merit a thorough updating according to Rameau's advances by an unknown hand as late as 1777." David Fuller in Grove online This volume was successively part of three of the largest and most famous private music libraries of all time. Prior to 1910, it was in the collection of Jean-Baptiste Weckerlin (1821-1910), director of the library of the Paris Conservatoire. When Weckerlin's library was auctioned in March of 1910, only two months before his death, Werner Wolffheim (1877-1930) purchased a large share of it, including the present item. Wolffheim's collection was then auctioned in 1927, at which time André Meyer (1884-1974) purchased it and brought it back to Paris. The Meyer collection was dispersed after its owner's death.

A New and Exact Map of the United Provinces, of Netherlands &c.

. . Large map by Hermann Moll shows the Netherlands. In the upper left part in-set map of the North Sea between the Netherlands and South England, on the right-hand side views of Amsterdam, Rotterdam, Middelburg, Utrecht, Groningen, Het Loo Palace and a plan of the ancient Roman Castle at the mouth of the Rhine river Arx Britannica (Huis Britten, Brittenberg). This magnificent map was printed by John Bowles of Cornhill, London and published in Moll's 1719 New and Complete Atlas, but it may also have been separately issued earlier. Moll came to London from probably from Bremen around 1678 and by 1688 he had his own shop in Vanley's Court in London's Blackfriars, between 1691 and 1710 at the corner of Spring Gardens and Charing Cross, and when he moved to Beech Street where he remained until his death. In1701 he published his first work A System of Geography. He was publishing atlases and separately issued maps, and from 1710 was also known as a maker of pocket globes. Printed from two plates and joined together in the middle, repaired tears and tiny holes in folds, tiny tears in white margins, colouring slightly pale, otherwise in a good condition. - ********** See www.pahor.de for larger photos! ********** - LANDKARTEN UND ANSICHTEN / MAPS AND VIEWS

A French royal decree merging the Compagnie des Indes Orientales with the Compagnie d'Occident, and granting the "new" Compagnie d'Occident exclusive and extensive trade rights. "Wroth 680 knows of no copy of this decree, which orders the fusion of these two companies, owing to the great success of the latter compared with that of the Compagnie des Indies Orientales, which had been very badly mismanaged.By this decree the Compagnie d'Occident is granted the exclusive right of trading 'depuis le Cap de Bonne-Esperance, jusques dans toutes les Mers des Indies Orientales, Isles de Madagascar, Bourbon & France, Coste de Sofola en Affrique, Mer Rouge, Perse, Mogol, Siam, la Chine & la Japon, mesme depuis le Détroit de Magellan & le Maire dans toutes les Mer du Sud'" - Maggs. No copies on OCLC. Rare. From the library of Cardinal Etienne Charles de Lomenie de Brienne (1727-94), Minister of Louis XVI, Archbishop of Toulouse and of Sens. A friend of Voltaire and a member of the Académie Française, Brienne wielded significant power as head of the Finance Ministry, which earned him many enemies. He died in prison during the French Revolution, despite having renounced Catholicism in 1793 (presumably as an attempt to save his life). WROTH, ACTS OF FRENCH ROYAL ADMINISTRATION 680.         The Newlyweds and their Baby's Comic Pictures for Painting and Crayoning

Akron/New York/Chicago: The Saalfield Publishing Co.. Very Good+. (c.1917, 1907). Stiff wrappers. NOISBN . [moderate edgewear to covers, internally Fine except for the expected and inevitable age-toning to the pages]. (cartoon strips and panels) A remarkably well-preserved example of this rare vintage coloring book (OCLC reports only four library holdings), containing mostly undated reprints of George McManus's newspaper comic strip, "The Newlyweds," generally considered the first American "family" strip. Created by the then 20-year-old McManus for Joseph Pulitzer's New York World in 1904, the strip ran for twelve years, at various times as both a daily and Sunday feature; when McManus left the World for the New York American (a Hearst paper), he began a new strip called "Their Only Child" ("a perfect clone," in the words of one historian), while "The Newlyweds" continued in the World, drawn by Albert George Carmichael. Dating the strips in the book would be a major research task, not helped by the mishmash of dates provided: the 1917 date is on the front cover; the title page reads: "Copyrighted 1907 by the Press Publishing Co."; and several of the individual color strips bear a 1916 copyright date, also credited to the "Press Publishing Co. (N.Y. World)." All appear to all be Sunday strips, although some are in B&W (for "coloring-in" purposes, I suppose) and others in color, and despite McManus's sole by-line on the title page, Carmichael's work is also well-represented. (On quite a few, either McManus's or Carmichael's signature is visible; generally speaking, the color versions appear to be by Carmichael and the B&W ones by McManus.)To my eyes, the 1917 publication date signals the publishers' attempt to wring a few more drops of revenue out of a feature that had ended the previous year; the seemingly anomalous 1907 copyright date would seem related to the "birth date" of baby Snookums (yes, that was his name), who was introduced into the strip in that year. [Either that or it's just a "holdover" from an earlier book incarnation, "The Newlyweds and Their Baby," published the same year by the New York World, but not to be confused with the present volume.] But relax: it's not so much a collection (let alone a chronicle) as it is a sampler of "The Newlyweds," and as such is utterly charming. McManus's most successful and best-remembered strip, "Bringing Up Father" (aka "Jiggs & Maggie"), debuted in 1913 and had an amazing 87-year run -- outliving its creator by 46 years! .

Full brown morocco gilt, gilt edges, by Root. Bookplate of Joseph Turner in vol. 2. Fourth edition of vol. 1, first edition of vol. 2, probably issued together. All early editions of this classic are now scarce. The first part was originally published on 25 April 1719; the fourth edition was published after 6 June, probably at the same time as the sequel and thus as found here. The sequel, ?'Farther Adventures?", was published in August the same year. Hutchins gives a detailed account of the printing and publishing of the two parts of Robinson Crusoe, including a number of variants within the first editions. These are not issue points, as the variants are found in different combinations. In this copy, the second part has verso of A4 with the announcement of the fourth edition and p. 295 correctly numbered. Copies of the book with both volumes in first edition are rare and now prohibitively expensive for most collectors.         Amerique Septentrionale Divisee en Ses Principales Parties . . . François, Castillans, Anglois, Suedois, Danois, Hollandois Tirée des Relations de toutes ces Nations Par le Sr. Sanson

Paris 1719 - Copper-engraved map by Cordier on laid, watermarked paper, hand-coloured in outline, in very good condition. A fine copy of Burden's 5th issue of Jaillot's map of North America, revised to incorporate the best available information from Guillaume De L'Isle and others. Hubert Jaillot's son Bernard carried on the family cartography business upon the death of his father in 1712, and in 1713, he issued a much revised and improved map of North America, incorporating the new geographic knowledge procured by De L'Isle and De Fer. In 1719, he issued what would be the fifth state of the map on which California ceased to be an island and the Carolinas were shown as part of the French territory: Floride. It is interesting to look at maps of North America at this period in terms of ambition competing with objectivity. One feels the emotional, political ambitions of England and France to have been boundless and liable to provoke quite pugnacious reactions, even though neither side really knew very well the geography of what they were claiming. The trials of exploration to ascertain actual facts were harsh and often not well rewarded, nor were the explorers always able to know: note LaSalle's account of the Mississippi wandering into Texas before finding the Gulf. Nevertheless, this revised edition of Hubert Jaillot's 17th century map incorporates a great deal of important geographical information: greatly improved delineation of the Great Lakes, the addition of tributary rivers to the Mississippi, the re-routing of the Colorado River to the Gulf of Mexico and, of course, the re-attachment of California to the continent. All these additions and changes were essentially correct. Burden, The Mapping of North America II, 709 (5th state); Karpinski, L.C. (MI) XXI; McLaughlin, The Mapping of California as an Island 113, state 2; Wheat, Mapping the Transmississippi West 74.

Moreni I, p. 433. Peignot, Dictionnaire historique et bibliographique, passim.: "Son ''Collegio Petroniano' où il prétend que les nourrices doivent enseigner le latin aux enfants, est très-curieux".

The Life and Strange Surprizing Adventures of Robinson Crusoe, of York, Mariner:

Taylor,, 1719. who lived eight and twenty years, all alone in an un-inhabited island on the coast of America, near the mouth of the great river of Oroonoque; Having been cast on Shore by Shipwreck, wherein all the Men perished but himself. With An Account how he was at last as strangely deliver'd by Pyrates. Written by himself. [With:] The farther adventures of Robinson Crusoe; being the second and last part of his life, and of the strange surprizing accounts of his travels round three parts of the globe. Written by himself. To which is added a map of the World, in which is Delineated the Voyages of Robinson Crusoe. 2 volumes, octavo (190 × 122 mm). Sympathetically bound in 19th-century russia by Clarke & Bedford, triple-fillet border, gold-stamped supralibros of a cock standing on a trumpet encircled by the motto "Vigilantibus," spine gilt, dentelles, edges gilt, in a calf slipcase; rebacked with original spines laid down. Part 1 with engraved frontispiece; part 2 with folding double hemisphere world map. From the libraries of Archibald Acheson, 3rd Earl of Gosford (1806?-1864), with his gold-stamped supralibros; and Archibald Philip Primrose, 5th Earl of Rosebery (1847?-1929), his embossed stamp on both titles "The Durdans, Epsom" and his bookplates. Fold-tears and another small tear in map neatly mended without loss, occasional light marginal spotting in first vol., first title and preface leaves a bit short at fore-margin, tiny mend in lower outer corner of title vol. 2. First edition, first issue of both parts, of the book that is widely accepted as the first novel in English, which was an immediate success, widely translated, and which inspired a huge number of imitations and adaptations across the world since publication. The first part was published on 25 April 1719 in an edition of 1,000 copies; the sequel, Farther Adventures of Robinson Crusoe, was published in August the same year. Rousseau recommended it as the first book which ought to be studied by a growing boy; Coleridge praised its depiction of "the universal man" and Marx used it to illustrate economic theory in action. The first English novel was modelled along the existing lines of hugely popular travel books and distantly inspired by the true story of Alexander Selkirk, yet Robinson Crusoe was "novel", as Defoe claimed in the preface to the second part, in supplying a "surprising variety of the subject". "The special form of adventure that [Defoe] chose, and even the name of his hero, have been adopted by countless imitators … This influence is not yet dissipated, for much of science fiction is basically Crusoe's island changed to a planet. At least equally relevant to the present purpose is the figure of the lonely human being subduing the pitiless forces of nature; going back to nature, indeed, and portraying the 'noble savage' in a way that made the book required reading for Rousseau's Emile" (PMM). "Defoe's immortality will always rest … especially on Robinson Crusoe, that immensely subtle, complex book with its simple plot and a character of compelling reality who appears in one archetypal incident after another. Embedded in world cultural consciousness, Robinson Crusoe has never been out of print. Most people still encounter Crusoe in childhood and never forget him. Only the Bible has been printed in more languages. From the very beginning Defoe's impact was international, as was the recognition that Robinson Crusoe was a new literary form with revolutionary power to 'instruct and delight'" (ODNB). A third part, "Serious Reflections of Robinson Crusoe", was published in 1720, not included here. It is not a continuation of the novel but rather a collection of essays on religious and moral subjects, ostensibly written by Robinson Crusoe in old age.

        Mispelzweig.

. Aquarell und Pinsel in Grau, auf Velin. 15,8:20,2 cm.

Lex Constitutionis: Or, The Gentleman's Law, Being, a Compleat

1719. A Legal Guide for "Gentlemen of All Ranks" Jacob, G[iles] [1686-1744]. Lex Constitutionis: Or, The Gentleman's Law. Being, A Compleat Treatise of All the Laws and Statutes Relating to the King, And the Prerogative of the Crown; The Nobility, And House of Lords; House of Commons; Officers of State; The Exchequer and Treasury; Commissioners and Officers of the Customs; Of the Excise; Of the Post-Office; Stamp-Office; Forfeited Estates; Publick Accounts; The Navy-Office; War-Office; Lieutenancy of Counties; Justices of Peace, &c. Wherein Near One Hundred Authors of the Best Reputation, Both Ancient and Modern, On the Subject, Have Been Consulted, And are Referr'd to. And also, An Introduction to the Common Law of England, With Respect to Tenures of Lands, Descents, Marriage-Contracts, Coverture, &c. Of Property, Creation and Forfeiture of Estates; Trials of Offenders, Courts at Westminster, &c. To Which are Added, Under Their Proper Heads, The Manner of Passing Bills in Both Houses of Parliament, the Judicature of the Lords; Variety of Adjudg'd Cases; And some Curious History of Antiquity. [London]: Printed by Eliz. Nutt and R. Gosling, (assigns of Edward Sayer, Esq;) for B. Lintot, 1719. [ii], [v]-xiv, 360, [12] pp. Octavo (7-1/2" x 4-3/4"). Recent period-style calf, blind panels to boards, raised bands and lettering piece to spine, endpapers renewed. Moderate toning to text, faint dampspotting in places, internally clean. A handsome copy. * First edition. In his preface, Jacob indicates that he did not write this treatise on England's Constitution for the landed gentry exclusively, but for "gentlemen of all ranks," that is, the literate general public. This distinction is significant. Jacob, though certainly interested in boosting sales by attracting the widest audience possible, was an idealist who believed that widespread knowledge of the law would help create a more just society. This is also evident in his other publications, such as, A Treatise of Laws (1721), The Common Law Common-Placed (1726), Every Man His Own Lawyer (1736). Another edition of the Lex Constitutionis was published in 1737. Sweet & Maxwell, A Legal Bibliography of the British Commonwealth 1:102 (48). English Short-Title Catalogue T137002.
