Thomas Baston
London Printed for the Author 1716. 8° (189x114 mm). [16], 212 pages. Woodcut decorated initials, head- and tailpieces. Contemporary English mottled calf, over pasteboards. Boards within gilt fillets, spine with five raised bands, underlined by gilt fillets. Title in gold on lettering-piece. Upper joint split at the head, corners lightly damaged. A very good copy, somewhat spotted and browned; waterstaining on the last leaves, a few fingermarks. The lower blank corner of fol. C3 is lacking, without any loss. Two marginal notes on fols. G6v and I1r referring to the Appendix. The first edition of this essay by the Tory Thomas Baston, dedicated – as the title-page states – 'to all Lovers of their Country'. Thoughts on Trade is one of the most interesting works on political economics in Early Modern Britain: an invective against stock-jobbers, projectors, fraud, financial degeneracy or corruption, and an acute warning about stock market bubbles: the South Sea Bubble occurred in 1720, owing to the financial exploits of John Law (1671-1729) and the failure of his system, causing bankruptcy and ruin especially in France, England, and the Netherlands. The work was issued entirely anonymously, although it was entered into the Stationers' Register under Baston's name. In 1732 the work was published under the author's name, with the new title Observations on Trade and a Publick. Baston was active in London as a printmaker. In 1710 he was incarcerated for six years in the Kings Bench prison for debt. Thoughts on Trade contains a large section entitled Case of the poor Debtor … [Click Below for Full Description]

AUBIN, Nicolas
1716. I am limited to 12 photos on eBay, but I have many more photos on my website...just ask. 'Cruel Effects of Diabolic Possession' is a famous work on the accused demon possession of Ursuline nuns, now known as the Loudon Possessions. Jean Mignon, the nun's confessor, made a plan for the nuns to fake being possessed and denounce Urbain Grandier, who was accused of summoning evil spirits. Nicolas Aubin's account of this 17th-century event covers the topics of witch burning at the stake, exorcisms, torture, accusation of sorcery, and flagellation. [Attributes: First Edition]

HOMANN, Johann Baptist.
Homann Johann Baptist, Norimberga, 1716.

BIBLIA HEBRAICA] MAIUS, Johann Heinrich & BURCKLIN, Georgius Christianus (editors).
Frankfurt am Main Johann Ioannis Philipp Andreas, 1716. One volume bound in two; 8vo, (215 x 160 mm); text in Hebrew and Latin; contemporary morocco binding with gilt raised bands, twin labels and fine ornamental gilt tooling to spine and boards, gilt gauffred edges; I - [13], 2-333 ll; [1], 335-686, [2] llpp. A scholarly edition of the complete Old Testament (Hebrew Bible), edited by Maius and Burcklin, the third and last of a series of the Frankfurt editions called by Masch 'Biblia Clodiana'. According to Darlow and Moule (5143) 'The text is mainly based on the Athias-Leusden edition of 1667,66 (No. 5134)'. Beautiful full-page copper plate engraving to frontispiece depicts Moses, Aaron, King David with a harp kneeling in front of the Ark of the Covenant, the sky with God's name suggested by the three 'Yod' letters in the glowing triangle (also appears underneath together with a reference to Ezekiel 1:28, which explains the mythical creatures depicted in the cloud). The engraving also includes the title in Hebrew and name Maius as the editor. The magnificent early 18th century binding was most likely custom-made for a wealthy patron, bearing his armourial crest on the front cover. Darlow & Moule 5143. [Attributes: Hard Cover]

William Hawkins
London: Excellent condition. Original leather binding. Some foxing on back pages of first volume. This is an exceptionally rare 1st edition set of legal scholar Sir William Hawkins's two-volume work A Treatise of the Pleas of the Crown. The first volume was published in 1716 and the second in 1721, making this set of books older than the United States. Hawkins's treatise was the first treatise in English published specifically on criminal law, covering prosecutions (aka "pleas of the crown"), defenses, and criminal procedure. Reprinted in numerous editions afterward, it is highly readable today and covers all manner of current and historical crimes such as treason, murder, assault, burglary, piracy, and even witchcraft. Hawkins's work was highly influential and continues to be cited by the Supreme Court in cases touching on crimes and criminal procedure at the time the Constitution was drafted. See, e.g., Crawford v. Washington, 541 U.S. 36 (2004) (citing Hawkins's Pleas of the Crown on the law of confessions). These books were purchased at an estate sale in England. They have their original leather bound covers and the original owner's name is written into the front interior covers of both volumes. There is no insect or water damage to either book and no missing pages. There is some light foxing on the back pages of the first volume. Otherwise, the books are in remarkable condition for being almost 300 years old. This set would make an excellent gift and conversation piece for an attorney who practices, or has an interest in, criminal law. [Attributes: First Edition]

2 volumes, 8.5 inches tall. A remarkable early 18th century full crushed morocco binding with gilt raised bands, twin labels and fine gilt tooling to the panels. All edges gilt with delightful gauffering. The boards have fine gilt tooling with rolls, fillets and corner tools framing an armorial crest. We can not identify the I I I (J J J?) at the foot of the spines or the armorial crest bearing a dog sitting upright on its haunches. We think the binding is probably German Protestant but would welcome any opinion on its origin. The endpapers are gorgeous with some relief and silver that does not appear in the photograph. Christopher Rowe was a schoolmaster in Norwich and then in Bristol. Throughout his career he inspired many to love literature, history and music. This work is an anthology of poetry from the classic poetry as well as more recent poets including some of Dryden's own poetry. Poets featured include Mr Philips, Mr Rowe, Alexander Pope, Ovid, King Charles the First, Joseph Addison and more. John Dryden was an English poet, literary critic, translator and playwright.
