Bering, Vitus 1617-1675.
sumptibus Academicæ Soc. Jesu, Typographiæ Tyrnaviensis, 1716. 8vo. praefatio+593 ; Bound in full contemporary brown morocco richly gilt with the monogram IHS at the center oh both cover boards, Spine with 4 raised bands gilt. Bering was tasked with writing a general history of Denmark, a work on reignof Christian IV and a work on resent events such as the Assault on Copenhagen in 1659 and the institution of Absolutism in 1660. Neither of these were published proor to his death. His only publication was a critical work on England, Orosij Annilonis dissertalio de bello Dano-Anglico (1667), a defense of the Danish king's policy. His work on the Assault on Copenhagen, Obsidio Hafniensis, was published posthumously in 1676. His largest work, Floms Danicus, an account of Danish history in latin reaching back to 1448, was not published until 1698. Its style is inspired by that of Publius Annius Florus. Historically, it is of little interest, being a merely stylistical treatment of older sources. It was, however, praised in its own time. Few of Bering's poems have survived. They represent the transition from Bording to Thomas Kingo, who both were among his personal friends, in Danish Baroque poetry. [Attributes: Hard Cover]

Cassas, Louis Francois - (1756 Azay-le-Ferron/Indre Versailles 1827)

MACHADO, Ignacio Barbosa].
Lisbon, Na Officina de Joseph Lopes Ferreyra, 1716. 4°, disbound. Woodcut ornament on title page Six-line woodcut initial on p. 3. Large woodcut cornucopia tailpiece on p. 14. Overall good to very good condition. 14 pp., (1 blank l.). *** FIRST and ONLY EDITION. D. Luís da Câmara (1685-1723), 3º conde da Ribeira Grande, was godson to Louis XIV and had served with distinction in the War of the Spanish Succession, defending Campo Maior against the Spanish. He was a plenipotenciary at the negotiations resulting in the Treaty of Utrecht (1713) and, once Portugal was at peace with France, was sent to Paris as ambassador. The Count made his entrance magnificently, outshining all other embassies. Due to the discovery of gold in Brazil toward the end of the seventeenth century, and later (1730) diamonds, the Portuguese monarchs were perhaps the wealthiest rulers in Europe during the first half of the eighteenth century. Their attitude on occasions such as this one was, "If you've got it, flaunt it." This account describes in great detail the five coaches ("as melhores, que se virão em Paris excedendo o primor da arte ao precioso da material"), each coach ornamented with emblems and reliefs and drawn by 8 horses (pp. 4-8). Then the author moves on to describe the velvet and cloth-of-gold outfits heavily embroidered with gold, silver, and jewels that were worn by dozens of footmen, pages, secretaries, valets, Swiss guards, coachmen and postillions (pp. 8-10). The description of the actual entry occupies pp. 10-14.Louis XIV died on September 1, 1715; the Conde da Ribeira Grande served … [Click Below for Full Description]

- [FRENCH VERSION FOLLOWS] Edition originale.
