Robert WALPOLE (d. 1810, Clerk of the Privy Council, Ambassador to Portugal), for the War office, vellum, 1 side oblong folio with papered seal and revenue stamp, Court at St James's, 17th November Dunk Halifax, 'the Father of the Colonies', was 1st Lord of Trade, 1748-1761, promoting Nova Scotia, whose capital is named after him (1749), as are counties in Virginia and North Carolina. In 1741 he married the heiress of Sir Thomas Dunk. In 1763 he signed the famous 'Dunk Warrant' to search and apprehend the authors, printers and publishers of Wilkes 'North Briton', No. 45. After the officers arrested 18 people and seized a vast quantity of papers, the warrant was pronounced by the judges to be 'unreasonable search and seizure', and Halifax was mulcted in damages. It has been called 'the most important warrant in Anglo-American law', and the doctine overturning it is closely related to the Fourth Amendment. Robert Walpole's father was Horatio, 1st Baron Walpole of Wolterton, brother of the Prime Minister.

Georg Wolfgang Wedel (1645 - 1721) attended between 1656-61 the famous school in Schulpforta with a scholarship from the Elector of Saxony. In 1662 he entered the University of Jena, where he studied philosophy and especially medicine. In 1667 he qualified for his medical license and in 1669 took his M.D. while practicing medicine in Gotha. His affiliation was Lutheran and published on alchemy. Wedel was an extremely productive author. In 1673 he assumed the chair of anatomy, surgery, and botany at the University of Jena. Later he assumed the chair of theoretical medicine. Wedel was Rector of the university some ten times. In 1679 he became the personal physician to the Duke of Weimar, and in 1685 to the Prince of Saxony.

A Lover of Old England [Daniel Defoe
Printed for J. Morphew near Stationers-Hall, 1716. Original Sewn Wrappers. First Edition. One of Defoe's infamous pamphlets, published under his second period of employment by the British government as a literary fifth columnist. Defoe would publish political or current event pamphlets, either anonymously or posing as a Whig, Tory, Jacobite, whom he said "my very soul abhors" (DNB 738), or even a repentant double agent, all while writing revolutionary works that lacked their bite, incendiary news which proved incorrect, or polemical pieces with unsound arguments. In short, he worked a a pamphleteering agent of chaos, all in the service of the government, pacifying their erstwhile opponents. Defoe was seen as a renegade, traitor, and spy by a number of his contemporaries: "the little art he is truly a master of, of forging a story and imposing it on the world." (DNB 737). Mercurius Politicus was published in the years shortly before his fantastical Robinson Crusoe. The periodical ran from May 1716 to December 1720. This being the October, 1716 issue. With a section on "the new Alliance with France," likely for the War of the Quadruple Alliance against Spain, as well as "the rising of East-India Stock," a reference to the beginnings of the South Sea Bubble, and two perspectives on the raising of the Siege of Corfu, from the "ridiculous" Venetian side, and the "curious" Turkish angle. Sewn pamphlet, lacking original paper wrappers. 313-384 pp. An old price or catalogue sticker on the title page, not affecting the text; minor chipping to the edges of the textblock. A Lover of Old England
London: Printed for J. Morphew near Stationers-Hall, 1716. Condition: Good binding. (ESTC P2105. Mohawk Indians]
[New York State], 1716. [3]pp. Folio. Old fold lines. Central folds reinforced with later lined paper, some manuscript pencil notes. Minor soiling and wear. About very good. In a half morocco box. An early deed for land granted to the commander of Fort Hunter, which had been built at the request of the Mohawk ambassadors to Queen Anne. The transaction took place four years after the construction of Fort Hunter, which was situated on the banks of the Mohawk River at the mouth of the Schoharie Creek. Herein, eight Mohawk tribesmen gave a tract of land "unto Rebekea," the daughter of Captain John Scott (d. 1725), the first commander of Fort Hunter. The Mohawks granted the land only "in Consideration of the Great love, favour & affection which we have and do bear toward our great friend and Loving Acquaintance Capt John Scott." The land in question was located "opposite Over Against the Land we have given to the Wife of Capt John Colins and her son." Queen Anne had ordered the construction of Fort Hunter at the request of Hendrick Tejonihokarawa, one of the four "Mohawk Kings" who travelled to London in 1710, to counter French Catholic influence over the Iroquois Confederacy. The fort included a small Anglican chapel within, serving as a religious mission to the Mohawks. In return for the protection of the fort and the benefit of the Anglican mission, Queen Anne asked Tejonihokarawa to help settle Palatine German refugees fleeing religious conflict in Europe. The settlers provided an important buffer between the Iroquois, as well as the French and the English. The docum … [Click Below for Full Description]

Edward Ward
ont> John Morphew: London, 1716. Book. The first edition of Edward Ward's poem providing a commentary on his views regarding the Protestant church and their occupation of St. Paul's cathedral. The first edition of the work. A 47 page copy of this work was issued the same year by the same publisher, ESTC no T4852. A very scarce work, being ESTC no. T48541. Collated, complete. Originally published anonymously by the noted satirical writer Edward Ward, most famously known for 'The London Spy', featuring adventures from people of various origins exploring London. His exploration of London in these texts included the seedier side of life, like prostitution, burglary, and general felonies. He published many satires during his life, including 'Female Policy Detected', 'The Arts of Designing Woman Laid Open'. Ward was often involved in political and religious controversy with his satirical texts, including 'Ecclesia et Factio' and 'Hudibra Redivivus'. He was a high-church Tory who launched several attacks on the Whigs and also the queen on failing to support the Tories in parliament. With regards to the church, Ward often criticised low-church moderation and occasional conformity. In this poem, Ward describes the beauty of St. Paul's Cathedral and its rich history, 'The Place where Kings had knelt before'. He explains how 'A numerous throng frequent the place, /unwrorthy of God's House or Grace'. This poem demonstrates the turbulence and variety of religious views in early eighteenth century England.
