This is a historically significant mapping.

Printed for A. Roper ; R Gosling . ; and S. Butler, London, 1716. Fourth Edition. [6], 107, [7-index printed] pages plus [7 - manuscript index] pages tipped in. 4 x 6 inches. Full leather binding with simple double blind stamped ruled borders on front and rear panels. Spine with portions of early label at top. Several inked notations, including Johannes Woodman (at head of title page), Sarah Winfield (his book) on front pastedown, and "John Woodman Surgeon July e/y : 28 : 1728" (July the 28th, 1728), and finally John Woodman, July 1, 1728 on rear pastedown. After the Preface is (faintly) "John Woodman son of Phillip Wood" with an inscription below that I can't decipher but may be a prescription (starting with Rx?). Boards. This recipe/pharmacopiae went through several printings over time. This example is perhaps unique for how it was user adapted by a previous owner. The owner (perhaps surgeon John Woodman) added manuscript numbers next to each malady/solution and used these numbers to create a new tipped in manuscript index called Index Remediorum, or an index of cures. They also augmented the printed index to be more complete. In this way the work could be used as a reference in either "direction" - starting with a malady loooking for a cure, or a cure and working backwards. The preface is signed in print JW. It is tempting to say John Woodman is the author, and that this copy has updates for a potential future edition. While possible, the name is common enough that we aren't comfortable there. "John Woodman son of Phillip Wood." is interesting since there is a "Phil. Woo … [Click Below for Full Description]

Papier légèrement jauni, petits défauts notamment aux coins, accroc à trois coiffes, premières gardes du tome 3 absentes, mouillure foncée en bas des pages au milieu de chaque volume (sur une centaine de pages à chaque fois). 1716-1754 KENT with her Cities and Earles described and observed A superb exle of John Speed's decorative map of Kent with later hand colouring. This exle is from the later Henry Overton edition. Inset maps of Rochester and Canterbury with elaborate crests and cartouche and battle illustration. John Speed (1552-1629) is the most famous of all English cartographers primarily as a result of The Theatre of the Empire of Great Britaine, the first Atlas of the British Isles. The maps from this Atlas are the best known and most sought-after of all county maps. The maps were derived mainly from earlier prototypes fo Christopher Saxon and Robert Norden but with notable improvements include parish Hundreds and county boundaries, town plans and embellishments such as the coats of arms of local Earls, Dukes and the Royal Household. For this publication of this prestigious atlas, Speed turned to the most successful London print-seller of the day, George Humble 'in poles head Alley'. William Camden introduced the leading Flemish engraver, Jodocus Hondius Sr. to John speed in 1607 because first choice engraver William Rogers had dies a few years earlier. Work commenced with the printed proofs being sent back and forth between London and Amsterdam for correction and was finally sent to London for publication. This exle bears the imprint of Henry Overton, who probably acquired the Speed plates in c 1713. Imprints began to be changed from c 1716, all being revised by c 1720. The maps were issued as a complete Speed atlas under the title indicated, but also used with other stock in the colla … [Click Below for Full Description]

Berlin (?), 1716. 6 Bll. Geheftet. 4°. [Attributes: Soft Cover]

17. 1716, First edition. Hardcover. Book, A beautiful set of the famed 'Vinegar Bible' published by John Baskett of Oxford. Dibdin notes this Bible as 'the most magnificent' of the Oxford Bibles. A handsome edition, with this set bound in a binding with George III's monogram to the boards. The first edition of the 'Vinegar Bible' which is known as such due to the erroneous 'The parable of the vinegar' instead of 'vineyard' above Luke XX (the verso of G6) to the New Testament. This variant has the 1717 imprint to the Old Testament and the 1716 imprint to the New Testament. Printed by John Baskett, who was the King's printer. Baskett held a reputation for purchasing competing Bible printing business and absorbing them into his own. He wished to produce a high quality Bible, in a folio edition, that would become a presentation piece used in churches and aristocrats. This Bible was therefore produced. A scarce edition of The Bible, which holds important stature in the history of print and in the bibliography of The Bible. Particularly scarce in this contemporary Royal binding, which is possibly a presentation binding produced for this work. This edition has the red-ruling throughout both volumes. The 'Vinegar Bible' is noted for its beautiful head and tail pieces throughout. Harry Carter, in 'The History of the Oxford University Press' notes that 'only Baskerville's Bible is its equal among English Bibles for beauty of type, impression and paper' (Carter, p. 171). This copy has been skillfully rebacked, to both volumes, with the original spines laid down and boards preserved. W … [Click Below for Full Description]

HOMANN, Johann Baptist
1716. Nuremburg: Homann, Johann Baptist. unbound. Map. Engraving with hand coloring. Image measures 19 1/8" x 22.5". Early map of New England by Johann Baptist Homann dates to circa 1716. Extends from the Delaware Bay to Quebec and the St. Lawrence River and from Philadelphia east to Nova Scotia. Includes New York, New Jersey, all of New England and parts of Pennsylvania and Canada. The map notes American Indian as well as European settlements. Abound with interesting elements, the map is a beautiful example of the many speculations found in cartography at a time when the region was still being explored. Largely focused on fur trade, European settlements were mainly confined to coastal regions. The Hudson remains unmapped beyond Albany, and Lake Champlain is properly labeled. What most likely is modern day Lake George, is here labeled as Lake Iroquois - a name that was earlier associated with Lake Champlain based on the tribe that settled the area. The map also notes some depth soundings near the coast of Cape Cod and Nantucket. Shoals and other coastal features are also mapped here, referencing the regions cod fishery industry at the time. Sennecaas Lacus is what looks like a mismapping of Lake Erie. Zuyd Lac is most likely no more than the widening of the Delaware River while modern day Quakertown Swamp in Pennsylvania is largely exaggerated. The map first appeared in Homann's circa 1716 "Atlas Novus" and was reissued for several decades. Manhattan is identified as N. Loch, which helps identify this map as the second state. Beautiful decorative cartouche shows a … [Click Below for Full Description]
