[WUNDERKAMMER] / CARPAZOV, Christian Benedict
Leipzig: Lanckisch's heirs, 1716. Hardcover. Near Fine. 8vo - over 7¾ - 9¾" tall. (3) ff, 96 pp, plus 5 leaves of engraved plates. Bound in 18th century speckled boards, extremities rubbed and contents somewhat toned, very good overall. First edition of this curious 'natural history of the cat', with a focus on the 'insolito felino lipsiensi', or 'wonderous cat-birth of Leipzig' in 1713. Alongside other descriptions of similar monstrous births, the body of the work is dedicated to a solemn treatment of the cat from a biological, natural historical, gastronomical (!), and medicinal point of view. Carpazov begins his treatise by noting that many unusual, wonderful, and even astonishing things come to pass which are very much against the order and laws of Nature, which no one can deny, because such things are attested to "day-to-day experience" as well as by physicians and historians. Carpazov proceeds to give a comprehensive account of wonderous births and events in and around Leipzig from 1700 to the present time, by way of example. He is concerned not only with human births (illustrated on figs. I & II), but also with those of animals: a cat-bat is illustrated on fig, IV, alongside a cat-pig. Such monstrosities appear to have occurred with remarkable frequency, nearly every other year by Carpazov's account. As advertised on the titlepage, Carpazov later gives a full description, and illustration, of the conjoined birth of six kittens which occurred in Leipzig in 1713 - an event which seems to have had a profound impact on observers. Homann here juxtaposes two opposite parts of Asia: the Capsian Sea, which forms part the western border of Asia and Europe, and the Peninsula of Kamchatka, the easternmost known point in continental Asia. This is a historically significant mapping.

Prideaux, Humphrey.
1716. 8vo. XII, (2), 286 pp. Contemp. calf. All edges sprinkled in red. 6th edition of this "often reprinted" (DNB) treatise, first published in 1697. Its scholarship depended in particular on Pococke. "Prideaux's literary reputation rests on his 'Life of Mahomet' (1697) [... of which] the story has been told that the bookseller to whom he offered the manuscript said he 'could wish there were a little more humour in it.' No sign of humour was ever shown by Prideaux, except in his proposal (26 Nov. 1715) for a hospital in each university, to be called 'Drone Hall,' for useless fellows and students. The 'Life of Mahomet' was in fact pointed as a polemical tract against the deists. [...] Some of its errors were noted by Sale in the discourse and notes to his translation of the 'Koran,' 1734" (ibid.). From the library of the British philosopher of religion, David Arthur Pailin (b. 1936), with his bookplate and notes laid in. Chauvin XI, 658. Cf. DNB 46, 353. Gay 3623 (1st. ed.).

Folio (386 x 264 mm). ff. 36, comprising title in red and black with engraved vignette, letterpress index leaf, and 34 engraved plates numbered (2-36, the title counting as plate one according to the index); a very good copy in contemporary sheep-backed speckled boards (skilful repair to hinges and edges worn). Many rare plants and birds are figured, along with ethnographic objects such as a Brazilian Indian girdle made from the nuts of the Brazilian tree Cerbera ahovai. The image of this plate was used for the border of Valentini's Museum museorum, Frankfurt 1714. Michael Rupert (1607-61), a physician and pharmacist in Nuremberg, was a virtuoso scholar-collector, and also assembled an important collection of art and antiquities. These plates were first published in 1642, reissued in 1716, and again in 1733. The engraved title of the 1642 edition was replaced here by a letterpress title with engraved vignette. A previous owner has written his name in very tiny writting under the main title this reads 'William Landen, 1719.' The full title of the book reads as follows but with the 's's being 'f's. "The Whole Art of Surveying and Measuring of Land, Made Easie, shewing By plain and Practical Rules, how to Survey, Protract, Castup, Reduce or Divide any Piece of Land whatsoever; with New Tables for the Ease of the Surveyor in Reducing the Measures of Land. msr. le baron de Müllern, ministre d'etat du roy de Suède au sr. Sternhöck, secretaire de sa majesté, au sujet des differents presents entre le roy de Prusse & la Suède avec des remarques. Sr. Excell. des Herrn Baron von Müllern, königl. Schwedischen Staats-Ministri Schreiben an den Herzn Sternhöck, sr. Mayest. Secretarium, betreffend gegenwärtige Differentzien zwischen denen Königen von Preussen und Schweden mit Anmerkungen begleitet. Utan ort, 1716. 4:o. (72) s. Tagen ur band, med rester av ryggremsa. Ur Ericsbergs bibliotek. Warmholtz 5834, not. Fransk-tysk parallelltext. [Click Below for Full Description]

Internally occasional brownspotting, but overall a very nice copy. Title-page in red an black, full-page engraved portrait of Hadrianus Carafa, full-page engraved portrait of Antonius Carafa, six beautiful large engraved vignettes, and six beautiful large engraved initials. Tissue-guards inserted later. (2) ff. (being half-title and title-page), portrait, (12) ff. (dedication), portrait, 501 pp. ¶ The very rare first edition of Vico's intriguing account of the deeds of Antonius Carafa, the historical biography which the highly influential Enlightenment philosopher, historian, and jurist was commissioned to write about the important seventeenth-century statesman. The work is more than a beautifully printed work by a highly influential thinker about an important Italian statesman, though; it is a rich and enlightened reconstruction of many major historical events and aspects of the contemporary history of Vico, mixed with numerous of Vico's personal opinions. As such, the work is of the greatest interest to historians, philosophers, jurists and political historians, as well as anyone interested in early modern European history; it furthermore gives us a unique insight into the thought of a thinker, whose ideas and opinions, both philosophical and political, have greatly influenced the likes of Marx, Hegel, Goethe, etc. The commission of the work is also that which caused Vico to become interested in the question of the law of nati … [Click Below for Full Description]

Warmholtz 6835, not. Carlander II, 775f.
