George Crawfurd
Edinburgh: Printed for the Author: Sold by George Stewart, at the Book and Angel, 1716 A very good copy of a scarce detailed account of the Scottish Peerage in the early eighteenth century. George Crawfurd was a Scottish genealogist and historian and this was his second work. This copy is in a newer, probably 20th century binding, copying contemporary binding style. With raised bands and title label to spine and a decorative border to the boards. It is in near fine condition with very slight wear to the top of the spine. Contents: new endpapers and new initial blank; title page in red and black; Preface pp iii-vii; list of subscribers pp i-iv; text pp 1-502; index pp i-iii; final blank. The pagination is somewhat odd: pages 46 and 462 both have additional starred pages - 46* and 46**; 462* and 462**; there is no 49/50 but the text is continuous; there are 2 x pp 53 and 181; and the numbering runs 286, 283, 385, 286, 291 - with continuous text. There are 2 small scholarly ink annotations; very small repaired bottom margin tears to pp 93 and 97; a minute hole in pp 11 and 237. The stitching is visible in the Preface at one point but the binding is sound. The paper tends to brown (sometimes quite dark) toning with some lighter sections. There is the occasional light mark.

[Petyt, George]
New York, 1716. 12mo. Contemporary American binding of calf over boards, ruled in blind in a double fillet windowpane pattern. Spine nearly perished, boards held tenderly by cords, calf on boards worn and stripped. Upper third of titlepage in facsimile. Age-toned. Two worm holes in lower margin, both beginning at start of text and one extending to the "G" signature, the other to the "I" signature. Withal, a very good copy. In a half morocco and cloth box. First American printing, and a very early New York imprint, of this treatise on the powers, procedures, and activities of the Parliament, originally published in London in 1690. A very thorough description on the workings of the English political system, which would have been of great interest in the colonies. This is one of the very few Bradford imprints that list the names of both father and son. "We are unable to trace the sale of any copy (except Mr W. Menzies') of this most rare book" - Sabin. The Menzies copy sold for a remarkable $27 in 1875. Authorship is ascribed by Evans. The North American Imprints Project locates twelve copies. Rare on the market, and in an early American binding, likely done by William Bradford's own shop.

BESLER, M. R.
- Leipzig and Frankfurt, Johann Herbort Kloss, 1716. Folio (386 x 264 mm). ff. 36, comprising title in red and black with engraved vignette, letterpress index leaf, and 34 engraved plates numbered (2-36, the title counting as plate one according to the index); a very good copy in contemporary sheep-backed speckled boards (skilful repair to hinges and edges worn). Second edition (first 1642). Basil Besler's Wunderkammer was inherited and added to by his nephew Michael Rupert, who here published a catalogue of his additions. This 'treasury of natural things from the vegetable, animal, and mineral kingdoms' exhibits such typical Wunderkammer contents as a unicorn horn, a hyoidal bone of a swan, a beak of a hornbill, a bird of paradise, a carved nautilus shell, an 'Arcimboldo' grotesque of shells, pyritised ammonites, asbestos, 'ruin' marble, engraved gems and antique coins, along with such unica as Johann Zizka's sword. Many rare plants and birds are figured, along with ethnographic objects such as a Brazilian Indian girdle made from the nuts of the Brazilian tree Cerbera ahovai. The image of this plate was used for the border of Valentini's Museum museorum, Frankfurt 1714. Michael Rupert (1607-61), a physician and pharmacist in Nuremberg, was a virtuoso scholar-collector, and also assembled an important collection of art and antiquities. These plates were first published in 1642, reissued in 1716, and again in 1733. The engraved title of the 1642 edition was replaced here by a letterpress title with engraved vignette. Apart from the index leaf there was no further text, and t … [Click Below for Full Description]

He was also general editor and organiser of the wellknown series of Delphin Classics. Among patrologists he is best known for his edition in 1668 in Rouen of Origenes' 'Commentaria in Sacras Scripturas'. In the preface to this history of ancient commerce Huet explains that it was commissioned by 'monsieur Colbert, ministre et sécretaire d'état'. HOMANN, Johann Baptist
Nuremburg: Homann, Johann Baptist. unbound. Map. Engraving with hand coloring. Image measures 19 1/8" x 22.5" Exquisite early map of New England by Johann Baptist Homann dates to circa 1716. Extends from the Delaware Bay to Quebec and the St. Lawrence River and from Philadelphia east to Nova Scotia. Includes New York, New Jersey, all of New England and parts of Pennsylvania and Canada. The map notes American Indian as well as European settlements. Abound with interesting elements, the map is a beautiful example of the many speculations found in cartography at a time when the region was still being explored. Largely focused on fur trade, European settlements were mainly confined to coastal regions. The Hudson remains unmapped beyond Albany, and Lake Champlain is properly labeled. What most likely is modern day Lake George, is here labeled as Lake Iroquois - a name that was earlier associated with Lake Champlain based on the tribe that settled the area. The map also notes some depth soundings near the coast of Cape Cod and Nantucket. Shoals and other coastal features are also mapped here, referencing the regions cod fishery industry at the time. Sennecaas Lacus is what looks like a mismapping of Lake Erie. Zuyd Lac is most likely no more than the widening of the Delaware River while modern day Quakertown Swamp in Pennsylvania is largely exaggerated. The map first appeared in Homann's circa 1716 "Atlas Novus" and was reissued for several decades. Manhattan is identified as N. Loch, which helps identify this map as the second state. Beautiful decorative cartouche shows a Europe … [Click Below for Full Description]

Antiporta allegorica inc. in rame, 10 illustrazioni inc. in rame e numerose inc. in legno n.t. (8, incl. l'antiporta), 248, (8) pp.; lieve uniforme arrossatura della carta. Prima edizione di questa raccolta di studi, esperimenti ed osservazioni compiuti dal noto erudito in vari campi delle scienze naturali. "This work, edited by one of Kircher's pupils, Johann Stephan Kestler, is a codification of Kircher's observations and experiments across the entire spectrum of his researches in physics. Naturally there are large sections in light and shadow, magnetism, acoustics, and music; but there are also experiments and observations in hydrolics, alchemy, and a myriad of other topics. This compendium was perhaps a response to entreaties from Kircher's fellow scientists, who appreciated his keen observations and experiments but did not care to wade through some 40 volumes to glean them. The book is an example of what Kircher's writings could have been like at the hands of a good editor. Kircher died the year the book was published, and it is uncertain to what extent he was involved in its publication. The Physiologia is not only a measure of Kircher's scientific curiosity and the vast range of his scientific researches, but also a barometer of his age, a catalogue of scientific concern of his time" (Merrill, Kircher, 29). Juvenal
London - Jacob Tonson and John Watts, 1716 Book. Very Good. Hardcover. A scarceearly eighteenth-century copy of Juvenal's Satires. Featuring an engraved frontispiece. In Latin. With an armorial bookplate to the front pastedown. The Satires are a collection of satirical poems by the Latin author Juvenal written in the late 1st and early 2nd centuries AD. Juvenal is credited with sixteen known poems divided among five books; all are in the Roman genre of satire, which comprised a wide-ranging discussion of society and social mores in dactylic hexameter. These five books were discrete works, and there is no reason to assume that they were published at the same time or that they are identical in theme or in approach. The poems are not individually titled, but translators have often added titles for the convenience of readers. Condition: In a full speckled calf binding. Externally, sound with some rubbing to the extremities. Spine label missing. Joints cracked but holding firm. Internally, firmly bound. Slight age toning butvery clean throughout. Ink number to front pastedown. The top corner of the front free endpaper has been clipped. Overall: VERY GOOD..
