Juvenal
London - Jacob Tonson and John Watts, 1716 Book. Very Good. Hardcover. A scarceearly eighteenth-century copy of Juvenal's Satires. Featuring an engraved frontispiece. In Latin. With an armorial bookplate to the front pastedown. The Satires are a collection of satirical poems by the Latin author Juvenal written in the late 1st and early 2nd centuries AD. Juvenal is credited with sixteen known poems divided among five books; all are in the Roman genre of satire, which comprised a wide-ranging discussion of society and social mores in dactylic hexameter. These five books were discrete works, and there is no reason to assume that they were published at the same time or that they are identical in theme or in approach. The poems are not individually titled, but translators have often added titles for the convenience of readers. Condition: In a full speckled calf binding. Externally, sound with some rubbing to the extremities. Spine label missing. Joints cracked but holding firm. Internally, firmly bound. Slight age toning butvery clean throughout. Ink number to front pastedown. The top corner of the front free endpaper has been clipped. Overall: VERY GOOD..

Giving such privileges to individuals was an added right that the Holy Roman Emperor enjoyed. In the same year he was also named a member of the Prussian Academy of Sciences in Berlin. Of particular significance to cartography were the imperial printing privileges (Latin: privilegia impressoria). These protected for a time the authors in all scientific fields such as printers, copper engravers, map makers and publishers. KATSU, Ju
16 full-page woodcut illus. in the text. 56 folded leaves. Three vols. in one. 8vo, orig. wrappers (rubbed, one leaf with about five characters obscured due to a stain), orig. block printed title label on upper cover (rubbed & frayed), newly stitched in the oriental style. Tokyo: 1716. An early Japanese edition of one of the most important Chinese texts on acupuncture. Katsu "was a Chinese physician whose years are uncertain but who lived prior to the time of the Ming dynasty. He wrote a book on the introduction of the moxa system into Japan from China, the original Japanese edition of which was published in 1684 with the title Jushikei (or Jushikyo) hakki [Mestler is in error here; there were earlier editions]...A theoretical discussion, by Katsu, chiefly on acupuncture but equally applicable to moxa, not on how to cure but on the more fundamental nature of the subject, comprised the first part of that work. The first part discussed the fundamental belief of the Chinese and Japanese in a relationship between the internal organs and their diseases, and curative treatment for them at specific sites on the outside of the body. The second part, written by an unknown co-author, was subtitled Juishikei ketsu chi-ho and gave practical instruction. Several illustrations in this work show relationships between moxa or acupuncture sites and specific internal organs (e.g. between the hands and the lungs). Two drawings are especially interesting as showing external measurements of the human body, anterior and posterior aspects, referring to differences between lean and fat individuals … [Click Below for Full Description]

[BURNET, THOMAS AND GEORGE DUCKETT]
Printed for J. Roberts. First edition.. Spine rebacked; red leather label chipped with some loss; edges a little rubbed; very good copy.. Not in Teerink. 8vo, contemporary Cambridge style calf, red leather label, gilt lettering. Engraved frontis; imprimatur leaf. An attack on the controversial English statesman Robert Harley, for whom Swift had worked, by the diplomat and pro-Whig pamphleteer Burnet and his sometimes partner George Duckett, friend of Addison and commissioner of excise. Burnet and Duckett also collaborated on two weeklies, Pasquin and The Grumbler, and a pamphlet critical of Pope's Homer, The Homerides (1716), which earned them a place in the Dunciad Variorum. Here they tell the story of manipulative, greedy puppeteer, descended from a Roman henchman which is obviously based on Harley, who had just been sent to the Tower. Though not traditionally considered prose fiction, A Second Tale of a Tub is an early example of collaborative fiction.

London: Printed by John Darby, 1716.. v,3-117,[2]pp. plus folding engraved map by H. Moll. 12mo. Modern antique speckled calf, spine gilt with leather label. Minor soiling and foxing. Near fine. "A reprint of the translation printed in 1698 of the Voyage of Sieur Accarrete to Buenos Aires, from Thevenot's Collection, without any acknowledgement of the source from whence it was taken" - JCB. The original was supposedly RELATION DES VOYAGES DANS LA RIVIERE DE LA PLATA (Paris, 1632), although EUROPEAN AMERICANA says this edition is "very possibly a ghost". The handsome folding map by Moll is "A New Map of Part of the Great River de la Plata, of Tucuman...." The dedication in this edition by Darby is addressed to the directors of the South Sea Company. In it Darby points to a profitable future in the South American trade: "I don't doubt but by your wise Direction, under the Patronage of your August Governour, our Wealth and Commerce will be vastly increas'd: this Way being evidently the easiest and speediest to convey the Product and Manufactures of Europe to Chili and Peru, and also the safest to bring Gold and Silver from thence into this part of the World." ANONYMOUS.
Amsterdam: Francois l'Honore, 1716. Duodecimo, contemporary vellum, titled in ink on the spine, ; a good copy. 'Nouvelle edition' (according to the title-page) of this imaginary voyage, an early work in the tradition of Fénélon's Avantures de Télémaque, and a continuation of its fourth book.Fénélon's Télémaque was an idealised account of the Roman Republic, and one of the most important books in the French classical tradition of the imaginary voyage. Although the authorship of Les Loix du Roy Minos remains unknown, it is one of the most inventive of the Fénélon imitations, a detailed investigation of the legal and political system of the utopian Minos: the focus on the courts and policing of the kingdom suggests an author associated with the legal system. The book is rare: OCLC notes a single copy (City University of New York Graduate Library). Old patch to lower cover.

First editions of two works on electricity by the Italian physicist Giambatista Beccaria (1716-1781), who was appointed to the chair of physics at the university of Turin in 1748 and was one of the scholars who helped transform electrology into a scientific discipline defending the theory of Benjamin Franklin.Ad 1: First edition, in the original Italian, of "Beccaria's last major contribution to the science of electricity" (DSB). It treats the theory of artificial electricity, especially in conducting bodies, deduced from the circulation of electricity in an ordinary apparatus. Beccaria explains and enlarges on Franklin's one-fluid theory of electricity. It contains descriptions of many experiments, with accompanying illustrations on the 11 engraved plates. It was translated into English, on Franklin's recommendation, in 1776.Ad 2: First edition, in the original Latin, of a collection of experiments and observations explaining the nature and properties of residual static electricity. Beccaria's interest in electricity "was reawakened by the work of a former student, G.F. Cigna, who in 1765 published an account of experiments that developed Nollet's elaboration of Symmer's famous manipulations with electrified silk stockings. Beccaria pursued these experiments with all his skill, inventiveness, and energy, largely because they seemed to favour the anti-Franklinian double-fluid theory. ... Beccaria, who would not admit action-at-a-distance, supplied this d … [Click Below for Full Description]

ANONYMOUS.
