DELISLE, G
Carte de Normandie ousont marquez exacteme Les Pays ou Contrees enferm ees dascette Province aussi bien que les Villes Bourgs Paroisses...Finely detailed map of the Normandy region of France by Guillaume de L'Isle. Shows the coastline along the English channel, along with the towns and villages, forests, abbeys and mountains of the region.Beautifully outlined with original color.Guillaume de L' Isle was the leading French cartographer of the early 18th century. He was known for both his strong belief in the importance of accuracy, as well as his prolific output of over 100 maps during his lifetime. Guillaume de L'Isle was born into a family of French cartographers, and was the pupil of mathematician and astronomer Jean Dominique Cassini. It is said that de L'Isle drew his first map at the age of nine. His first atlas, which he published at the age of 25, made an unprecedented effort to both correct fallacies of earlier maps, such as the depiction of California as an Island, and to add current data to maps. De'Isle was elected to the French Academie Royale des Sciences at the age of 27 and was later appointed to the highest honor as Premier Geographe du Roi (1718). His critical approach to the maps of his predecessors, backed by his training under J. D. Cassini, earned him recognition as the first scientific cartographer and the foremost geographer of his age. Isaac Bickerstaff, Jonathan Swift, Richard Steele.
London-J N, 1716. Book. Four Volumes ofIsaac Bickerstaff's accounts inThe Tatler. Scarce early edition and we were unable to find a collation, though pagination is consistent and appears complete. Direct from the Regency library of Elizabeth Greenly, later Lady Elizabeth Coffin Greenly. Elizabeth Greenly, born at Titley Court, Herefordshire, was a noted and varied collector. She kept prolific diaries from 1784 until her death in 1839 which included her responses to current events and occasions in her daily life. Among the diaries many names and anecdotes of celebrities of the time appear, including Lord Byron, Marie Atoniette, Mary Wollstonecraft and Hannah More. She was known to comment on customs of foreign countries to which she and her friends had travelled, and had a keen interest in scientific discoveries and advancements including medicine and archaeology. The Greenly library contents show Elizabeth Greenly's numerous interests including: Welsh causes, Science, topography, travel, Bibliana and literature, particularly female poets. The library contains many first editions of contemporary works, and many are signed or contain her bookplate. The library contained over 1000 volumes which show the diversity and depth of her interests and give an insight into the life of this fascinating collector. Isaac Bickerstaff was a pseudonym used by Jonathan Swift, initially for a death-hoax he placed on Almanac maker and astrologer John Partridge. Swift and Steele then decided to use thenamefor the editor of The Tatler, a journal published over two years consisting of the gossip a … [Click Below for Full Description]

LEMERY, M Nicolas
A Leyde: Chez Theodore Haak, 1716. [20], 937pp, [31]. With an engraved frontispiece and eight woodcut plates (one folding). Title in red and black. Contemporary speckled calf with contrasting red morocco lettering-piece, spine richly gilt. Rubbed with significant loss to lettering-piece and head of spine, surface scratches to upper board. First published 1675, his Cours de chymie went through 13 French editions, numerous foreign translations, and proved to be the standard work for over a century during the scientific Enlightenment. . Onzie'me edition. 8vo.

Ellis Walker
London - W Bowyer, 1716. An English translation of the teachings of Epictetus. Epictetus was a Greek-speaking Stoic philosopher. He believed that all external events are beyond our control and should accept calmly and dispassionately what happens in life. The teachings are told through poetical paraphrase by Ellis Walker. The work begins with a poem in praise of Epictetus before going on to his enchiridion. His enchiridion is a manual of advice. From the antiquarian library of Christopher Rowe. Christopher Rowe was a schoolmaster in Norwich and then in Bristol. Throughout his career he inspired many to love literature, history and music. He was a specialist on 17th century printer and bookseller, Humphrey Moseley and began his, unfortunately unfinished, PhD dissertation on him. With an engraved frontispiece. Collated, complete. Condition: In a full calf binding. Rebacked with original boards preserved. Externally, generally smart with patches of rubbing to boards and extremities. Prior owner's bookplate to front pastedown. Another prior owner's inscription to front pastedown and title page. Internally, firmly bound. Pages are age toned withlight spotting throughout, heavier to the first and last few pages. Overall: VERY GOOD. [Attributes: Hard Cover]

Dearing (ed), John Gay. Poetry and Prose 546. Fine ¶ Trivia (after the goddess of streets, not the modern meaning, of trifles or unimportant matters) takes Virgil's Georgics as an ironic model for a mock account of outdoor life in London to satirise the noise, stench and danger of contemporary life on its streets. "Though there had been imitations of Virgil's didactics, there had been nothing of the scope, nor any that had hit upon the real idea, of Trivia: to imitate in mock, not just one or another of Virgil's prescriptions, but the entire work." (Dearing). "Gay's satiric thrust is aimed both at idle aristocratic Londoners of the day, at one extreme of the class system, and at loud and a … [Click Below for Full Description]
