Kirchner, Paul Christian / Jungendres, Sebastian Jacob (ed.)
Nürnberg, Peter Conrad Monath, 173[0?]. 4to. (10), 226, (26) pp. Title page printed in red and black. With engraved frontispiece (J. G. Puschner del et sc.), engr. separate double-page-sized title, and 28 double-page-sized engraved plates. Contemp. half vellum with ms. spine title; all edges coloured blue. A later edition of Kirchner's important manual of Jewish ceremonies and rites, first published in Jauer in 1716 (while Jungendres's expanded and well-illustrated edition first appeared in 1724). The plates show Rosh Chodesh, the Sabbath, Passover, Shavuot, Rosh Hashanah, Yom Kippur, Sukkot, Chanukkah, Purim, circumcision, engagement, marriage, divorce, burial, etc., as well as liturgical objects, costumes, and rooms. The Polish-born Kirchner had been a rabbi in Fürth before converting to Protestantism in 1713, giving up his birth name Gumpel Mardochai (though Jungendres's preface suggests that he later returned to his old faith). Many of his descriptions are representative of the stricter Polish rites, rather than those observed by the more lenient German community. The engravings by the Nuremberg artist Johann Georg Puschner (commissioned by Jungendres) depict scenes from the Jewish congregation and synagogue of Fürth. "Today most libraries offer merely the reprint published in 1974. This reproduces the Erlangen University Library's copy of an edition of which the exact year of printing is not known, as it is not fully printed, reading only '173...'. Thus, it is only known that another edition was produced in the 1730s - likely in 1730, and certainly in 1735" (cf. Herz … [Click Below for Full Description]

Montagu, Lady Mary Wortley, with Alexander Pope and John Gay.]
London: printed for J. Roberts, 1716. (2), iii(1), (2), 23 pp. 8vo, sewn, as issued; in a brown cloth folding case. First edition. Pope and Gay first met Lady Mary Wortley Montagu early in 1715. Three years before she had achieved notoriety by eloping with the Whig politician Edward Wortley Montagu, after a courtship marked by intrigue and parental disapproval; she was now beginning to "repent at leisure." Her new friendship with Pope and Gay led to the writing of these three mock-pastorals, satirizing, sometimes with a rather daring explicitness, the fashionable world of the day, and alluding to the comparative unpopu-larity of the new German monarchy with the English aristocracy. "The authorship of these poems has been a problem ever since their publication, but the greatest share is Lady Mary's." -- Foxon. John Gay was largely responsible for "The Toilet;" Pope's contributions, if any, are difficult to determine. For a time these scandalous poems circulated in manuscript, and they inevitably fell into the hands of Edmund Curll, who immediately printed them without allowing his name to appear in the imprint. Curll did, however, write a preliminary "advertisement," in which the triumvirate is revealed: "The reader is acquainted, from the title-page, how I came possess'd of the following poems. All that I have to add, is, only a word or two concerning their author. Upon reading them over at St. James's Coffee-House, they were attributed by the general voice to be the productions of a lady of quality. When I produc'd them at Button's, the poetical jury there brought in a dif … [Click Below for Full Description]

HERMANN, Jacob.
Amsterdam: Apud Rod. & Gerh. Wetstenios, 1716. <p>First edition of the first textbook on theoretical mechanics based on the Leibnizian calculus, important for containing the first published discussion of the kinetic theory of gases. "This textbook concerned advanced mechanics in the modern sense and was considered an important work, very favorably reviewed by Leibniz himself in the <em>Acta Eruditorum</em>" (Fellmann in DSB). "The beginning of the kinetic theory of gases is usually assigned to the year 1738, when Daniel Bernoulli's 'Hydrodynamica' appeared at Strasbourg. The famous tenth section of this book pursued some of the consequences of the assumption that 'elastic fluids' consist of innumerable tiny particles in rapid motion. [However an] earlier attempt dates from 1716, and is to be found in the 'Phoronomia' of Bernoulli's compatriot Jacob Hermann ... For us the importance of Hermann's chapter XXIV is that it is, as far as I know, the first attempt to deal mathematically with the relations between heat and motion. The intuition that the speed of the particles must be squared is especially noteworthy, but perhaps not more so than the assumption that their speeds will not all be the same, so that an average must be taken" (Knowles Middleton). "In 1716, the Swiss mathematician Jakob Hermann (1678-1733) published his book on theoretical mechanics, <em>Phoronomia</em>, in which he proposed the first definite measure of the heat of molecular motion. In Proposition LXXXV he wrote: <em>Calor, caeteris paribus, est in composite ratione ex densitate corporis calidi, & dupli … [Click Below for Full Description]

Hauksbee (Francis)
Nella Stamperia Di Sua Altezza Reale. Per Jacopo Guiducci e Santi Franchi, 1716. FIRST ITALIAN EDITION, with 7 folding engraved plates and 1 smaller on different paper (not numbered), numerous bold woodcut decorations, plates a bit browned, pp. [xvi], 162, [2], large 8vo, contemporary green vellum, spine gilt in compartments, russet morocco lettering piece, shelf number to foot of spine, overlapping fore-edges, front joint cracking, good. The first translation of Hauksbee's 1709 'Physico-Mechanical Experiments' (which was 'Sold only at the Author's House'), and in fact the second edition of the text: Henry Guerlac in DSB points out that this edition was the one chiefly read in France, and the one used by the pioneer electrician C.F. de Cisternay Duffay. A French translation did not appear until 1754. In the main article Guerlac describes Hauksbee's experiments, and the 'unique collaboration between the venerable dean of English science [i.e. Newton] and the vigorous, gifted experimenter. From Newton, Hauksbee came to understand the theoretical import of some of his discoveries; and for his part the older man relied on Hauksbee's practiced hands to test some of his conjectures. What particularly interested Newton we learn from the changes he made during this period in new editions of his principal works, the Opticks and the Principia.' 'Hauksbee's important experiments on electroluminescence, static electricity, and capillarity, described in the present wok, mark the beginning of sustained experimentation in the field of electricity' (Norman 1020). PEDAGOGIE)
A Amsterdam, Aux dépens d'Estienne Roger, 1716.
