Popular garden book (and probably the most influential book in the history of pomology) by the leading French gardener of the seventeenth century. For more than 20 years, beginning in 1665, La Quintinie worked as gardener to Louis XIV, rising steadily with ever-expanding titles. The potager at Versailles, constructed from 1677 to 1683, is the most famous of the fruit and kitchen gardens he oversaw in all the royal houses to meet the needs of the court: asparagus in December and strawberries in April, as well as the King's favorite figs. This book, published posthumously by La Quintinie's son Michel, introduced his methods to a wide audience. Later editions, such as our copy, added to the directions for pruning and thinning out buds sections on melons and flowers, as well as advice on dealing with orange tress and La Quintinie's reflection on agriculture.

Leipzig: Lanckisch's heirs, 1716. Hardcover. Near Fine. 8vo - over 7¾ - 9¾" tall. (3) ff, 96 pp, plus 5 leaves of engraved plates. Bound in 18th century speckled boards, extremities rubbed and contents somewhat toned, very good overall. First edition of this curious 'natural history of the cat', with a focus on the 'insolito felino lipsiensi', or 'wonderous cat-birth of Leipzig' in 1713. Alongside other descriptions of similar monstrous births, the body of the work is dedicated to a solemn treatment of the cat from a biological, natural historical, gastronomical (!), and medicinal point of view. Carpazov begins his treatise by noting that many unusual, wonderful, and even astonishing things come to pass which are very much against the order and laws of Nature, which no one can deny, because such things are attested to "day-to-day experience" as well as by physicians and historians. Carpazov proceeds to give a comprehensive account of wonderous births and events in and around Leipzig from 1700 to the present time, by way of example. He is concerned not only with human births (illustrated on figs. I & II), but also with those of animals: a cat-bat is illustrated on fig, IV, alongside a cat-pig. Such monstrosities appear to have occurred with remarkable frequency, nearly every other year by Carpazov's account. As advertised on the titlepage, Carpazov later gives a full description, and illustration, of the conjoined birth of six kittens which occurred in Leipzig in 1713 - an event which seems to have had a profound impact on observers. Quoting sources as diverse as the Koran (p. 22) and the Acta Eruditorium of 1686, Carpazov distinguishes six different types of cat (including the Sea-Cat, apparently found off the coast of North America, and the Flying Cat, founding only in the province of Casmir in Hungary), before launching into a discussion of the medicinal properties of feline anatomy. The brains are held to be poisonous, but the rest of the animal is certainly edible, as the French prove by eating them as a delicacy in winter (p. 35). Carpazov even discusses the introduction of housecats to America by the Spanish (pp 62-3) - before which eg Darien was apparently overrun with rats. OCLC locates just 1 American copy, at Yale. * OCLC 54232076.

The True Nature of Imposture Fully Display'd in the Life of Mahomet [.]. The Sixth Edition, corrected.

London, for E. Curll, J. Hooke and T. Caldecott, 1716. - 8vo. XII, (2), 286 pp. Contemp. calf. All edges sprinkled in red. 6th edition of this "often reprinted" (DNB) treatise, first published in 1697. Its scholarship depended in particular on Pococke. "Prideaux's literary reputation rests on his ‘Life of Mahomet’ (1697) [. of which] the story has been told that the bookseller to whom he offered the manuscript said he ‘could wish there were a little more humour in it.’ No sign of humour was ever shown by Prideaux, except in his proposal (26 Nov. 1715) for a hospital in each university, to be called ‘Drone Hall,’ for useless fellows and students. The ‘Life of Mahomet’ was in fact pointed as a polemical tract against the deists. [.] Some of its errors were noted by Sale in the discourse and notes to his translation of the ‘Koran,’ 1734" (ibid.). From the library of the British philosopher of religion, David Arthur Pailin (b. 1936), with his bookplate and notes laid in. Cf. DNB 46, 353.

First Edition. 4to: xiv,298,[2]pp, with 35 (of 37) maps, plans and plates (18 of which are folding); ornamental engraved vignettes, and woodcut musical notation in the text (never bound in were the map of Détroit de le Maire, no. v, and the plate of Indiens en habits simples, no. ix); plate xvi was bound in twice). Contemporary calf, spine richly gilt in six compartments, brown leather lettering piece gilt, "Caissotti" in gilt script on upper board, all edges stained red, marbled end papers, red silk page marker. An exceptional, wide-margined copy, text, maps and plates fresh and clean, marred only by a stain in the gutter of first three leaves. Provenance: copper-engraved bookplate, "Il Cittadino / Carlo Giac. Caissotti." Sabin 25924. Borba de Moraes I 328. Hill, p. 115. Leclerc 1736. Palau 94964. Gibson's Library, p. 128.& First Edition of this classic in the literature of South American voyages of exploration. Frézier set sail in 1712 with a French commission to assess the strength of Spanish settlements on the Pacific coast and to revise existing charts. According to Hill, Frezier "brought back information of considerable geographical and scientific value" to later navigators, and his account is today appreciated for its keen observations of the customs, commerce, and natural history—including the cotton and strawberry plants—of Chile, Peru and Tierra del Fuego. (It's interesting to note that Frezier's surname was itself derived from fraise, the French for strawberry.) The chapters on Indian and Creole life include descriptions of costume and architecture, as well as musical instruments. The folding plans of cities visited are often enhanced by panoramic views, as in the case of Callao, Concepción, Valparaíso, La Serena, Salvador de Bahía, and Angra (Azores). Amongst the most important plates are the general map of the expedition, the Strait of Lemaire, Valdivia, Bahía de an Vicente, Santiago de Chile, Lima and Bahía de Todos los Santos. An immediate success, the work was soon translated into English and German and republished several times in the eighteenth century.

Histoire de la decouverte et de la conquete du Perou. Traduite de l'Espagnol...par S.D.C

Paris: La compagnie des libraires, 1716. 8vo (17 cm, 6.75"). 2 vols. I: Frontis., [40], 360 pp.; 13 (2 fold.) plts., 1 fold. map. II: [8], 479, [1 (blank)] pp. Early French printing of this very successful Peruvian history, which went through numerous editions in languages including Spanish, Italian, Dutch, German, and English. Zárate arrived in Peru as part of the retinue of the first viceroy, and served there from 1543 until 1548. His work was first printed in its original Spanish in 1555, but did not appear in French until 1700; the present translation was done by S. de Broë, Seigneur de Citry et de la Guette. The first volume is illustrated with an oversized folding map and fourteen engraved plates, including the well known depiction of a nattily dressed European gentleman, reclining on a raft-like cushion, borne across a stream by two Indians. Married set: The two contemporary bindings are similar but not identical; both are of mottled leather, one more coarsely grained (and acid-etched) than the other, while one has floral and the other pomegranate motifs gilt-stamped in spine compartments. The match was made by a previous, Spanish-speaking collector, who has left pencilled notes in Spanish in both volumes. Sabin 106261; Palau 379641. Contemporary mottled sheep and calf as above, corners and edges worn, all joints cracking, both volumes with minor worming to front covers and pinholes to spines; vol. I with loss of leather over spine head (half of top compartment). Pencilled check marks scattered throughout; front free endpaper and recto of last text page of vol. II with annotations.

With the fur trade in crisis, La Compagnie du Castor shows signs of panic. Manuscript document, signed

Montreal: August 27, 1716. Good/In 1715, the Compagnie du Castor, directed by Nicolas de la Lanouillier, retained the monopoly on the beaver trade in Canada. The company failed to honor its bills of exchange that year, and failed in all of its payments the following spring. The company scrambled to hire intermediary suppliers to deal with the rough trappers and traders at the bottom of the fur trade, but the middlemen refused to function without guarantees of payment. The present document is a declaration made by the company director in the presence of (no less than!) the acting governor of New France, Claude de Ramezay, that a certain supplier named Brire, "who does not know how to write," delivered 190 packs of dry beaver weighing 120 pounds each, and that it was duly noted in the Bureau of Beaver Inventory (Bureau de la Recette des Castors) in Montreal. The document is signed by Lanouillier, Ramezay, and several prominent merchants. There is a note of panic in the assembly of big shots to guarantee a transaction between the monopoly and an illiterate trader. By 1720, the Compagnie du Castor was amalgamated into the Compagnie des Indes. . 1 leaf folio (35cm); torn at bottom edge with loss of text at lower right of recto and damage to signatures at lower left of verso. Repaired with blank white paper, which has toned to tan. Main text and signatures still present and legible. Condition noted. Reference: Lande, Political Economy of New France, #214.
