Relation du voyage de la mer du Sud aux côtes du Chily et du Perou, fait pendant les annees 1712, 1713 & 1714.

Paris, J. G. Nyon, E. Ganeau & J. Quillau, 1716. - 4to. xiv + 298 + [2]p. With 24 maps and plans (17 folding) by A. Bercy le fils and Fonbonne, and 13 plates (1 folding) engraved by N. Guerard le fils and J. B. Scotin; ornamental engraved vignette and historiated initials preceding dedication, some musical notation in the text. Ornamental woodcuts and initials. 19th century half calf; spine gilt with armorial stamp gilt-stamped on tailend of spine. First edition of a classic in the literature on South American voyages of exploration. Frézier (1682-1737), a military engineer from Savoy, sailed to Chile and Peru in 1712 with a French commission to assess the strength of Spanish settlements on the Pacific coast. His account of the expedition was much valued as an early contribution to the hydrographical knowledge of the region, but is today of interest for its keen observations on the life, customs, commerce, and natural history of Chile, Peru, and Brazil. The author was the first Frenchman to accomplish an accurate chart of the Straits of Magellan and of the region round Cape Horn, and his work served as a guide to later navigators. The folding plans of the cities visited are often enhanced by inset panoramic views, as in the case of Callao, Concepción, Valparaíso, La Serena, Salvador de Bahía, and Angra (Azores). The chapters on Indian and creole life include descriptions of costume and architecture, music and dancing (pp232-233), food and drink, and pastimes, with plates showing male and female costume, the ritual of drinking maté (Paraguayan tea), Chilean Indians playing the ‘Sueca’, a game resembling hockey, flour-making, etc. On pp241-246 the author describes the cruel and mean treatment of the Indians by the creoles, who were not permitted to have Indians as slaves, and therefore favoured their African slaves imported from Angola and Guinea via Portobello and Panama; these in turn were not allowed to mix with the Indians and adopted their masters’ condescension towards them. The Indians consequently nurtured an implacable hatred of both the creoles and their slaves, and hid away provisions and any mineral riches they might discover. The section on Brazil treats the island of Santa Catharina (pp17-27), and Bahia, (pp272-279), then the country’s capital, where the author comments on the African slave trade and on the large population of Jews; a folding plate represents two negro slaves carrying a passenger in a sedan chair. Frézier’s studies of natural history are only remembered today for bringing back Chilean strawberry plants which were successfully propagated in France by Bernard de Jussieu, and here illustrated life-size on plate XI. There are descriptions of the maté tea plant (pp228-230), of the coca plant (pp246-247), of guano (p137), and plates representing the cotton plant, exotic fishes and llamas. Light foxing at beginning and end, otherwise a good copy. Borba de Moraes 328; Hill, p115; Leclerc 1736; Palau 94964. [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]

THE HOLY BIBLE, CONTAINING THE OLD AND NEW TESTAMENTS. Newly translated out of the original tongues: and with the former translations diligently compared and revised. One volume in two.

Edinburgh: Printed by James Watson 1716 - 12mo, (120x62mm), [501 leaves, ?of 502], general title and separate title to the New Testament present, both with the printer's device; the former soiled and mounted on Japanese paper, a small piece torn from the head-fore corner of 2M8, some marginal tears repaired to several leaves. Slightly browned at the edges throughout and with the margins occasionally cut close to the text or, on a very few leaves, shaving the text. Contemporary dark blue calf, the centre of each cover decorated in gilt to a design formed from several individual tools within a frame of an ornamental roll with corner arabesques, backstrips gilt tooled in 5 compartments with raised bands; the whole slightly rubbed and a small area of wear at the head of the first volume, and with surface cracking of the leather on the backstrips; marbled paper endleaves, the front free endleaf of volume one replaced with near-contemporary marbled paper of a similar pattern and colour. Signature of Miss [Sarah] Campell dated 1770, partly obscured at the head of the general title and on the pastedown endleaf of the second volume and a gift inscription to Margaret Forbes 'from her affectionate mother' Sarah Forbes; another previous early owner's signature totally obscured to either side of the printer's device on volume one. (Herbert Historical catalogue of printed editions of the English Bible 940) The text ends on Tt10 (as accords with ESTC which locates 20 copies of this edition in the British Isles and 4 in the USA), this copy appears to lack A2 but the text begins at Genesis so presumably is wanting either a separate title to the Old Testament or a prefatory or dedicatory leaf.         Elettricismo artificiale ... (Colophon: Turin, royal printing office [of the King of Sardinia], 1 June 1772). With 11 engraved folding plates. With: (2) [BECCARIA, Giambatista]. Experimenta, atque observations, quibus electricitas vindex late constituitur, atque explicatur.(Colophon: Turin, royal printing office [of the King of Sardinia]), [1769]. With letterpress folding table and 1 engraved folding plate. 2 works in 1 volume. 4to. Contemporary mottled half calf, gold-tooled spine.

Ad 1: DSB I, p. 548; ICCU TO0E 000864; Wheeler Gift 435bis; ad 2: DSB I, pp. 547-548; ICCU TO0E 000867; Wheeler Gift 424. First editions of two works on electricity by the Italian physicist Giambatista Beccaria (1716-1781), who was appointed to the chair of physics at the university of Turin in 1748 and was one of the scholars who helped transform electrology into a scientific discipline defending the theory of Benjamin Franklin.Ad 1: First edition, in the original Italian, of "Beccaria's last major contribution to the science of electricity" (DSB). It treats the theory of artificial electricity, especially in conducting bodies, deduced from the circulation of electricity in an ordinary apparatus. Beccaria explains and enlarges on Franklin's one-fluid theory of electricity. It contains descriptions of many experiments, with accompanying illustrations on the 11 engraved plates. It was translated into English, on Franklin's recommendation, in 1776.Ad 2: First edition, in the original Latin, of a collection of experiments and observations explaining the nature and properties of residual static electricity. Beccaria's interest in electricity "was reawakened by the work of a former student, G.F. Cigna, who in 1765 published an account of experiments that developed Nollet's elaboration of Symmer's famous manipulations with electrified silk stockings. Beccaria pursued these experiments with all his skill, inventiveness, and energy, largely because they seemed to favour the anti-Franklinian double-fluid theory. ... Beccaria, who would not admit action-at-a-distance, supplied this deficiency with a complicated scheme of electrical atmospheres and "vindicating," or regenerating, electricity. These ideas ... subsequently led Volta, while seeking alternatives to them, to the invention of the electrophorus" (DSB).Bookblock cracked, with some leaves a bit loose, a few leaves slightly browned and some occasional spots. Binding heavily rubbed, with much of the gold lost in the tooling on the spine. Good copy of two important works on electricity.

Les Loix du Roy Minos , ou continuation de quatrième livre des avantures de Telemaque fils d'Ulisse?

Francois l'Honore, Amsterdam 1716 - Duodecimo, contemporary vellum, titled in ink on the spine, old patch to lower cover; a good copy. Law and politics in Fenelon's Minos utopia. 'Nouvelle edition' (according to the title-page) of this imaginary voyage, an early work in the tradition of Fénélon's Avantures de Télémaque, and a continuation of its fourth book. Fénélon's Télémaque was an idealised account of the Roman Republic, and one of the most important books in the French classical tradition of the imaginary voyage. Although the authorship of Les Loix du Roy Minos remains unknown, it is one of the most inventive of the Fénélon imitations, a detailed investigation of the legal and political system of the utopian Minos: the focus on the courts and policing of the kingdom suggests an author associated with the legal system. The book is rare: OCLC notes a single copy (City University of New York Graduate Library).

Preface and index. Full contemporary mottled sheep (rubbed, corners lightly bumped, head & foot of spine chipped, lower back joint cracked). Red morocco title shield. The present catalogue was first published in 1716. When the supplement was completed in 1741 a newer and fuller titlepage was substituted in the copies then unsold, but still dated 1716. The supplement has a separate titlepage: Supplementum Catalogus librorum tam impressum quam manuscriptum Bibliothecae publicae Universitatis Lugduno-Batavae. Leiden (Samuel Lugtmans & Cornelius Haak), 1741, but the pagination is continuous (the supplement occupies pages 501-534). Incidentally there is a substantial unpaginated index placed between them of 60ff. The Catalogue of the University Library at Leyden has a certain air of modernity in its carefully listed holdings in theology, jurisprudence, medicine, philosophy, philology, political economy, history, belles-lettres, classics, numismatics, etc. A single chapter enumerates the celebrated collection of 1993 Oriental manuscripts in Persian, Turkish, Hebrew, Armenian, Coptic, etc. Separate chapters list the special collections donated by Huygens, Vossius, Perizonius, De Smet, and others. Rare [Brunet 31496 says that this is one of the most representative sources of Oriental manuscript holdings].
