OVERTON, Henry.
1714. London: Overton, 1713. Original colour. 345 x 490mm. A scarce map of Nottinghamshire, from Overton's county atlas, 'England Fully Described in a Compleatt Sett of Mapps of ye County's of England and Wales'. It is unusual in that the map takes up less than half the area: a large plan of Nottingham fills the top left half of the sheet, not based on that by Speed but apparently a new survey. Under that is the title cartouche and a text box with a few statistics and sundry information, ending 'the most noted rivers are the Trent and Erwash, its cheif Comõdities the best Liquorice, Plaster like that of Paris, Malt'.

Pieter VANDER AA (1659 - 1733)
Incisione in rame, con coloritura coeva, perfette condizioni. Grandissima rarità cartografica." Alexander Pope
1714. Condition: Very Good. SIGNED BINDING by Lloyd and Wallis. Slim 12mo, late 19th century full navy crushed morocco gilt, raised bands, gilt dentelles, marbled endpapers, all edges gilt. First complete edition and first separate publication of Pope's mock-heroic masterpiece; the 1st edition to contain all five cantos of the poem. Illustrated with an engraved frontispiece and five plates, as well as a later portrait of Arabella Fermor Inserted opposite the dedication. Pope was initially inspired to compose The Rape of the Lock in order to resolve a quarrel that arose between the Fermor and Petre families after Robert lord Petre snipped a lock of Arabella Fermor's hair. Hoping to ease the animosity between the two families through playful humor, Pope, with Arabella Fermor's permission, first published The Rape of the Lock in two cantos in Lintott's "Miscellaneous Poems and Translations" in 1712. Pope's genius, however, is fully displayed in the five-canto version of the poem in which he expands the sketch to include divine machinery, albeit on the miniature scale of sylphs and gnomes. "One of Pope's most brilliant performances, it has also been one of his most popular" (DFrabble, 810). Rothschils170. Bookplates. Early owner inscription, dated 1766, and a few other small ink marks on washed title page. A lovely copy, beautifully bound in full morocco by Lloyd and Wallis. Photos available upon request. Mandeville, Bernard de
London: J. Rorerts [Roberts], 1714. First edition. Duodecimo (155 x 93 mm). 18th-century calf, rebacked to style, boards panelled in blind with floral corner pieces. Engraved head- and tailpieces, initials. Armorial bookplate of William Graves to front pastedown, with their motto, "Aquila non captat muscas". Extremities worn, some cracks and marks to boards, endpapers browned from turn-ins, hinges cracked but firm, first two leaves a little chipped, a few small punctures to top edge of title leaf repaired with japan paper, contents browned and foxed with a spot of minor dampstain to the fore edge of gathering K, L4 slightly shorter at fore edge and a chip to L5, overall a very good copy. Rare first edition, first issue, of this "celebrated work, which through Adam Smith, had an immense influence on political economy" (Foxwell), and the first edition to contain the Remarks, with 18th-century marginalia reflecting its controversial reception. The first issue has a fleuron on the title, leaf I3 mis-signed I2, and "rejoyning" instead of "rejoicing" on p. 36, line 26. The second issue corrects the error on page 36, has leaf B3 mis-signed B5 as well as I3 mis-signed I2 and is issued with a cancel title-page removing the fleuron and adding additional text in its place. The alteration to the title was presumably intended to attract a wider readership, the shorter title being extended to explain the moral or philosophical merits of the work. The poem was originally published in 1705 as "The Grumbling Hive", but this is the first edition to contain the twenty "Remarks" which purporte … [Click Below for Full Description]

Gay, Mr. J. [John]
R. Burleigh, London, 1714. Scarce and important "Ordinary Paper Copy," bound in plain gray laid paper wrappers (not original). 7 etched plates by Louis du Guernier. The date on the title-page is possibly a misprint: the exact bibliography of this scarce edition is not fully understood, but textual evidence and the plates show it precedes the 1721 edition and the ornaments of John Watts suggest a date not before 1716. No copy of this edition in the British LIbrary. With signature of "Chris Gunby. Coll. Joh." on the title-page, admitted to John's College, Cambridge 1714, later Vicar of Sowerby. This copy from the Braikenridge Collection (handwritten label on inside of slipcase. With Alfred Matthew Hale armorial bookplate and other interesting booklabels of provenance and consequence. Very light soiling and staining, mostly to last few leaves, later wrappers, uncut, a little soiled and creased, near fine internally. Preserved in later cloth folder and red morocco-backed cloth slip-case with pull-off top. Most scarce thus.

FULLER, Thomas.
, . . ESTC T121458; Blake, p. 163; Wellcome III, p. 76. Second edition in English of a popular pharmacopoeia, based on the fifth Latin edition of 1714. According to the introduction, the author had originally compiled "a very great Collection of the best, and neatest Medicines" for personal use, constantly testing and amending the recipes and sharing the manuscript with others. "Now it so chanced, that a certain young Gentleman, a Batchelor in Physick, having gotten one of these, and carrying it into Holland, died and left it there. This unlucky Accident gave me great Uneasiness; for I knew not into what Hands it might fall; and perhaps the Dutch might print it upon me rough as it was, and unprepared for the Press" (A3v). Fuller made a selection from his notes, from which the first Latin Pharmacopoeia extemporanea was published in 1701. Fuller quickly saw several editions through the press, constantly amended, but had no intention of publishing a translation. Then he read an advertisement, announcing the publication of a translation, and he set himself to prepare and publish his own pharmacopoeia in English, which appeared in 1710. In the introduction he defended the "hard Words, and a Sort of Latin English" of the text, stating that "those that are so ignorant, and Ordinary, that they cannot apprehend what I write, should be so diffident also, as not to read it. For whatever they may think, it is assuredly one of the highest and most criminal Presumptions in the World, to thrust themselves into Physick, a Calling so honourable, so difficult, and so extremely dangerous" (A … [Click Below for Full Description]

Nieto, David
London: Thomas Ilive, 1714. First edition. Hardcover. g to g+. Small quarto. [10] 272pp. 9.5x7.5". Original brown mottled calf boards with blind stamped decorative ruling and motifs on the covers. Spine with gilt lettering and ruling over a red label and raised bands. Gilt tooling along the edges of the boards. Illustrated Spanish title page bordered with elaborate decorative engravings. This is a first edition of Matteh Dan which has been considered Rabbi David Nieto's magnum opus. Organized in the form of a dialogue in five parts, the book acts as a defense of Rabbinic Judaism and the Jewish Oral Law against the views of the Karaites and theological/ ideological attacks during the period from some ex-marranos. In doing so Neito provides a detailed analysis of the nature of Talmudic disputes between the rabbis of the Mishnah and Gemarah. Nieto regarded this work as a supplement to the famous "Kuzari" of Judah Halevi, the purpose of which was to demonstrate the veracity of the Written Law, while the object of his own work was to prove the validity of the Oral Law. In parallel fashion to the original Sefer Ha-Kuzari, which took the form of a supposed dialogue between a rabbi and the pagan King of the Khazars, Nieto's work also takes the form of a dialogue. The first unpaginated section includes a dedication statement and a preface. Text in Spanish, in a two column format. Historiated woodcut initials, decorative headpieces, tailpieces and vignettes throughout the text, as well as a number of tables, charts, calendars and some small illustrated figures. & … [Click Below for Full Description]
