BAKER, Thomas].
Pierre Miquelin and Jacques Piget,, Paris, 1714. First edition in French of Baker's Reflections upon Learning (1699), a work designed to display the inadequacies of human knowledge and reason and to emphasise the ultimate need for belief in revelation. Bacon and Descartes are closely considered. 8vo (166 × 85 mm.), pp. [xxiv], 347, [5]. Title with metalcut ornament, other woodcut ornaments. Contemporary polished calf, gilt panelled spine, tan morocco label. Spine slightly rubbed with slight chip at head, minor wear to corners. A very good copy. [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]

PURCELL, Henry 1659-1695 et al.
London: William Pearson, for S.H. and Sold by John Young, 1714. "Viewed as a whole, the contents [of Harmonia Sacra], both as to text and music, reveal a style that can best be described as very 'high church'... Purcell had not only contributed a larger share than anyone else to Harmonia Sacra, book I, but, as Henry Playford stated in a preface..., had taken upon himself the responsibilities of music editor as well." Zimmerman p. 147. "In early July 1693 the second volume of Harmonia Sacra was advertised for sale, contained in which were five of Purcell's finest devotional songs... 'In guilty night' is unique among all Purcell's sacred music: it fits into no single category, combining elements of the devotional song with those of the cantata and the oratorio... "Harmonia Sacra also contained two magnificent settings for solo soprano which demonstrate how Purcell had taken the dramatic, declamatory Italian style and created his own variant, brilliantly colourful yet always aware of every subtlety in the text... Purcell's treatment of Nahum Tate's 'Tell me, some pitying angel'... is one of the greatest examples of Purcell's genius for setting words and capturing changing emotions, and arguable one of the best solo settings in the whole English musical repertoire." Binding slightly rubbed and marked, else a very good, clean and tall copy. First edition. [ii], 355-357, [1] pp. 4to. The first publication of the Longitude Act, which encouraged the discovery of a method of quickly and accurately determining a ship's longitude. "An early example of a means adopted by a government for encouraging scientific discovery and progress" (Grolier/Horblitt). The Act established the Longitude Board, tasked with evaluating proposals for measuring longitude and awarding prizes. The top prize of £20,000 was reserved for any method that could measure longitude within one half of a degree.Subsequent Longitude Acts - there was a series of such acts throughout the 18th century - added various other incentives. The problem of accurately determining longitude had confounded navigators and scientists for centuries. The common method of calculating longitude by dead reckoning relied on estimates of speed and direction and was therefore subject to cumulative errors. MARSIGLI, L.F.
Romae, F. Gonzagae, 1714. Folio (375 x 250mm). pp. 40, with engraved title vignette and 31 engraved plates; pp. xlvii, (6), with a folding engraved map. Contemporary vellum. A fine copy of this beautifully produced early work on fungi. Lancisi's commentaries are titled; 'Dissertatio epistolaris de ortu, vegetatione, ac textura Fungorum..' & 'Physiologicae animadversiones in Plinianam Villam nuper in Laurentino detectam...' "Earlier views on the origin of fungi were still, however prevalent. Particularly that elaborated by Luigi Fernando Marsigli (who after retiring from a military career had, about 1710 founded the Institute of Bologna for the advancement of science) and set out at length in "Dissertio de generatio fungorum, 1714". This was supplemented by a commentary by the famous epidemiologist and physician to several popes, Giovanni Maria Lancisi (to whom the dissertation is dedicated), who supported Marsigli's view that fungi are product of corruption, mycelium being the intermediate state between corruption and the fungal fruit-body" (Ainsworth p. 17).//Nissen BBI, 1280; Schliemann 1080.
