Paper]
[London, 1714. Small folio broadsheet. [2]pp., including printed docket title on verso. Ornamental initial. Dbd. Early folds and early stab holes in left margin. Trimmed close, with slight loss to the first line of caption title and docket title. Minor foxing. Overall very good. The most enlarged of three editions of this title recorded by Hanson, who assigns all three a date of 1712. While Parliament did introduce certain paper taxes that year (to which this document appears to refer), this petition also refers to the "late" wars, which indicates it was actually published following the Treaty of Utrecht in 1713. Its discovery within a large bound collection of similar documents, nearly all of which may be dated conclusively to 1714 or 1715, and its reference to a "High Duty Impos'd Two Years Since upon Stock in Hand" strongly suggest a 1714 printing date. The petition protests new paper taxes, charging that the already existing "Excessive Tax upon Paper, hath already much hindred the Printing of Learned and Useful Books in England" and that any additional duties would ruin the domestic paper industry and book trade. With good information on specific kinds of paper, measurements, and duties. The document is among the earliest examples of commercial lobbying literature, which first began proliferating during the major changes in British government in the mid-1710s. ESTC records four copies in the United Kingdom and three in North America. HANSON 1702.

ESTC T34402; Rothschild 1950; Kress 2931. Also issued with the date 1713 in imprint; the setting of type is the same throughout in both issues. [Click Below for Full Description]

But the dramatist, his actors (including Colley Cibber, who played Gloucester in both Richard III and the first performances of Jane Shore, wearing the very same costume in each), and the con … [Click Below for Full Description]

BUSNOT, DOMINIQUE. Histoire du regne de Mouley Ismael, roi du Maroc, Fez, Talifet, Souz, & c. [WITH: La tradition de L'Eglise dans le soulagement des captifs ou le rachat des esclaves. Rouen: G. Benhourt, 1714. An important work in two parts on the kingdom of Morocco in the early 18th century and the attempt to redeem Christian prisoners who were taken captive and held by the marauding pirates of North Africa. The problem reached such epidemic proportions that a religious order, the Trinitarians, was founded with the express purpose of ransoming such captives. The author of the work, Busnot, was one such member and tried unsuccessfully to free captives held in Morocco during his visits to the region. The work describes the history and culture of Morocco and the state of the Christians who were held. The second part is a treatise on the tradition and methods of the Church regarding the redemption of hostages in such situations. Quite an interesting work. 12mo (17 x 10cm), First part: [5], 254pp., [13]. Second part: 278pp. Engraved frontispiece of the King of Morocco granting an audience to the Trinitarians. Bound in contemporary calf, some rubbing, especially to joints, occasional toning. A very good copy. [Attributes: First Edition]

DACIER, Anne .
Rigaud, Paris, 1714. 1 blank leaf + TP + [1]-614 + [615] = Omissions à suppléer + [616] = Fautes d'impression & Approbation + [617]-[619] = Privilege du Roy. 12 mo. First Edition.Based on a single incident (when she inscribed an autograph book with a quote from Sophocles: "Silence is the ornament of women"), Anne Dacier has sometimes been portrayed as a retiring aristocratic lady who considered public intellectual combat to be demeaning to her status as a woman. Had this been true, Dacier would never have published so many works under her own name and she would certainly never have entered into the furious debate that was set off by her translation of Homer whose faithfulness to the original text was in stark contrast to a translation published by Antoine Houdar de la Motte in 1714.Representing the "moderns" in this argument, Antoine Houdar de la Motte published his version of Homer radically altering the text to suit modern sensibilities while criticizing the stylistic and moral flaws of Homer compared with the poetry of modern France. As he did this, de la Motte - who knew no Greek - reduced the epic to twelve books and took the liberty, as he wrote in his defense, "to change what I thought disagreeable"in the poem. He called his rendering an "imitation," rather than a translation. In response to this affront - which she considered to be a travesty on several levels - Dacier published her major treatise on aesthetics: On the Causes of the Corruption of Taste. There, she unconditionally defended the superiority of classical literature, notably the epics of Homer, over the … [Click Below for Full Description]

Great Britain: A rare and fascinating book containing over 200 original hand-tinted British coats of arms dating from the reign of king George 1 (1714-1727) Many of the most prominent family names in British history are represented such as Byron, Cholmondley, Cornwallis, Windsor, Walpole, Hamilton and Somerset among others. The book has no date but begins with King George's coat of arms followed by that of his son HRH George Augustus, Prince of Wales, which would place it at the early 18th century. There are 186 full page hand- tinted coats of arms, (Page size is 19cm by 12cm) Two pages are missing-187 and 188. Two pages at the end contain smaller depictions and aren't tinted. Title and any pre-title pages are missing, front leather board is detached but present, rear board partly detached and has been reinforced with tape. Corners of the boards are rubbed and have the expected wear of a 300 year old book. .Backstrip has five raised bands and an impressed number 2, which suggests this is part of a set. Edges and pastedowns/feps are tanned. Owners ex-libris sticker with own coat of arms is on front cover pastedown. Sporadic foxing throughout, but most of the pages and illustrations are fairly clean, some pages have a small pencil tick to top right hand corner. A wonderful and rare volume.
