Londres [i.e. en Hollande], 1766. (LONGITUDE ACT)
London: J. Baskett, Assigns of T. Newcomb, H. Hills, 1714. First edition. [ii], 355-357, [1] pp. 4to. The first publication of the Longitude Act, which encouraged the discovery of a method of quickly and accurately determining a ship's longitude. "An early example of a means adopted by a government for encouraging scientific discovery and progress" (Grolier/Horblitt). The Act established the Longitude Board, tasked with evaluating proposals for measuring longitude and awarding prizes. The top prize of £20,000 was reserved for any method that could measure longitude within one half of a degree. Subsequent Longitude Acts -- there was a series of such acts throughout the 18th century -- added various other incentives. The problem of accurately determining longitude had confounded navigators and scientists for centuries. The common method of calculating longitude by dead reckoning relied on estimates of speed and direction and was therefore subject to cumulative errors. The need to more accurately determine longitude was brought to the fore by the Scilly naval disaster of 1707, in which four British warships and some 1500 men were lost off the Isles of Scilly after losing their bearings during a storm. The Navigation Act lead to the development of the lunar distance method in 1763 by Nevil Maskelyne and the invention of the marine chronometer by John Harrison in 1773. Harrison received more prize money under the Act than anyone else, and the marine chronometer eventually came into wide use in the 19th century. The act was issued separately and as part of the collected acts of P … [Click Below for Full Description]

EUCLID
J. Roberts for John Senex, and John Maxwell, London, 1714. First edition of Tacquet’s Euclid in English, translated from the Latin by William Whiston. This version of Euclid’s Elements, together with theorems from Archimedes, was compiled in 1654 by Andrew or Andreas Tacquet or Andrea Tacquet (1612-1660), a Flemish mathematician and Jesuit priest. Tacquet was well respected as a mathematician and considered as a predecessor in the development of calculus. His objective in writing his geometry was to produce a version of Euclid’s Elements that could be more easily understood. He succeeded and the text became very popular. His was one of the first examples of breaking away from the “traditional Euclid.” Tacquet also included some theorems of Archimedes, together with some “agreeable Propositions” of his own. The translator William Whiston attended Newton’s lectures while at Cambridge and he showed great promise in mathematics. He was later appointed Newton’s assistant, and finally succeeded him as a Lucasian professor. Ships from U.A.E. [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]

MANGET, Jean Jacques.
, . . Blake, p. 285; Cole Library 1040; Heirs of Hippocrates 443; Wellcome IV, p. 43. A very thoroughly illustrated, systematic account of human anatomy, with 136 large engraved plates, some with a single large figure and some with many small ones. Some of the figures show microscopic views of details. The text and plates cover men, women and children, including skin, hair, muscles, bones and teeth, organs, nerves, blood vessels, respiratory system, digestive tract, reproductive system, etc. Although almost entirely devoted to human anatomy, a brief section is devoted to dogs, with an anatomical plate. The anatomical theatre on the title-pages shows a human dissection in progress, but also dead dogs on the floor. Manget's own work comprises parts 1 and 2 (in 4 books), each with its own title-page, both noting the third part by Eustachius, which also has its own title-page. It had been first published in 1714, but new plates were engraved for the present edition. Some copies include an engraved portrait of Lancisici in the Tabulae anatomicae, not included here. With some spotting and occasional, mostly marginal, stains, but still in good condition. The thoroughly illustrated ancestor of the 1858 Gray's Anatomy.

Johannes Wolters, Amsterdam, 1714. Theophili Golii Grammatica Graeca, sive Educatio Puerilis Linguae Graecae. Pro Gymnasio Argentinensi primum conscripta, jamque denuo ab Authore aucta & recognita. Editio novissima prioribus corectior & distinctior. Amstaelodami, apud Joannem Wolters, 1714. Front endpapers bear a 1726 young scholar's note as well as the bookplate of oil tycoon John W. McReynolds; a few additional, small inky spots and one brief note within the page block, none obstructive; ffep and first blank leaf bear open tears at bottom free corners and a short closed tear at foreedge of title, and both endpapers show light foxing, with residue of decoration at page block edges, otherwise sound, two-color printing with some spectacular ligatures. Firmly bound octavo in contemporary calf, five bands, spine panel modestly crazed with a title plate chipped at the right but with gilt remaining; mottled nutmeg-colored boards have fared much better, bearing only a scuff at the upper rear, a smaller one at the left front, and a small pattern of nicks at the upper front, as well as modest wear at edges and spots of wear through to the board at two free corners. Some curious typographic usages: a major I flanked by mirror minor c's forms the M of the date, for example, and the ligatures for omicron-sigma, chi-rho, and theta-anything are positively Voynichean. GREENWOOD, Jonathan
[?London, 1714-1715]. [?London,, 1714-1715].. Duodecimo (149 by 77 mm), unpaginated, engraved title, 2pp. dedication, 70 engraved plates, 65 with original hand colour, manuscript calculation in ink to front free endpaper, dated in a contemporary hand March 4 to title page, contemporary sheep, blind stamped and tooled, spine in six compartments separated by raised bands, title piece to spine, title in ink. A scarce naval signals book, the first to be printed in the English language. The book was the enterprising production of Jonathan Greenwood. Greenwood was born about 1656 and apprenticed in June 1670 in the Stationers' Company, where he was made free in 1679. He presumably had naval connections, but no other works of his are known and no other record of him as a publisher survives (Mead). The growth of the British navy led to a demand for a record of the signals used at sea. Commanders might have to manage “as many as a hundred ships in battle, many of which were still privateers”: the vessels might not be trained in Navy discipline (Tritten).James II was the first to co-ordinate British flag signals while still Duke of York, and various manuscript works followed, in an inconvenient folio size. Greenwood saw the opportunity for a small, cheaper book aimed at “Inferior Officers who cannot have recourse to the Printed Instructions”; although the instructions to the fleet were confidential, the signals were not (Perrin). Each signal is shown by an engraving of a ship displaying the flags of the appropriate signal, coloured where necessary, with an explanation underneath … [Click Below for Full Description]

Collates [8], 390 pg: complete. First Issue, with anonymous full title page (Variant A), E8, G1, and G3 cancels as is typical, and including "Aristomenes: Or, the Royal Shepherd. A Tragedy" with a separate half-title. An exceptionally clean, pleasing copy of a rare book that has not appeared at auction in over a decade and which is currently the only copy known on the market. Though she had written poetry throughout her youth in the Stuart court, it was only in her final years that Anne Finch, Countess of Winchilsea began to publish her work. Miscellany Poems was the first and only collection she ever released, initially under the by-line "A Lady," and later, at the encouragement of her husband, under her own name. "Finch's works often express a desire for respect as a female poet, lamenting her difficult position as a woman in the literary establishment and at the court...while writing of political ideology, religious orientation, and aesthetic sensibility, her works also allude to other female authors of the time, such as Aphra Behn and Katherine Phillips. Through her commentary on the mental and spiritual equality of the gende … [Click Below for Full Description]
