GREENWOOD, Jonathan
1714-1715]., [?London. The first printed English signals book Duodecimo (149 by 77 mm), unpaginated, engraved title, 2pp. dedication, 70 engraved plates, 65 with original hand colour, manuscript calculation in ink to front free endpaper, dated in a contemporary hand March 4 to title page, contemporary sheep, blind stamped and tooled, spine in six compartments separated by raised bands, title piece to spine, title in ink. A scarce naval signals book, the first to be printed in the English language. The book was the enterprising production of Jonathan Greenwood. Greenwood was born about 1656 and apprenticed in June 1670 in the Stationers' Company, where he was made free in 1679. He presumably had naval connections, but no other works of his are known and no other record of him as a publisher survives (Mead). The growth of the British navy led to a demand for a record of the signals used at sea. Commanders might have to manage "as many as a hundred ships in battle, many of which were still privateers": the vessels might not be trained in Navy discipline (Tritten).James II was the first to co-ordinate British flag signals while still Duke of York, and various manuscript works followed, in an inconvenient folio size. Greenwood saw the opportunity for a small, cheaper book aimed at "Inferior Officers who cannot have recourse to the Printed Instructions"; although the instructions to the fleet were confidential, the signals were not (Perrin). Each signal is shown by an engraving of a ship displaying the flags of the appropriate signal, coloured where necessary, with an explanation … [Click Below for Full Description]

[Commerce]
[London, 1714. Small folio broadsheet. [1]p. plus printed docket title on verso. Dbd. Early folds and early stab holes in left margin. Mild foxing. Very good. An early British petitionary leaflet calling for greater enforcement of customs laws for imported goods. The author charges that most consignments of foreign goods are now being made to "Naturalized Foreigners and Unfreemen," who are not under the same obligations as Freemen, who state in their oath "not to Colour of Cover the Goods of Aliens." If "no Remedey be given," it is argued, "all Persons will be discouraged from taking their Freedoms, and few will be left of Substance to perform the necessary Service in the Government of [London]." The document is among the earliest examples of lobbying literature, which first began proliferating during the major changes in British government in the mid- 1710s. ESTC records four copies, at the British Library, Oxford, National Library of Wales, and California State Library. HANSON 1980.

[Brandy]
[London, 1714. Broadsheet, 12 1/2 x 7 3/4 inches. [1]p. plus printed docket title on verso. Dbd. Early folds and early stab holes in left margin. The type for "E" in the first "THE" in the caption title was apparently never inked, as the only evidence of the "E" is in a faint impression visible on the verso. Minor foxing. Very good. An early political leaflet petitioning Parliament for greater enforcement of duties on foreign brandy, arguing that English brandy is under threat from black-market foreign brandy in port towns. The document also explains the growing importance of English brandy to the British economy, enumerating the various British and colonial industries its manufacture supports, including those of corn, coal, molasses, and course sugars. Among the earliest examples of commercial lobbying literature, which first began proliferating during the major changes in British government in the mid-1710s. ESTC records four copies in the United Kingdom and one in the United States, at Columbia. GOLDSMITHS 5108. HANSON 1996.

Robert Machuel
Rouen: 1714. [Click Below for Full Description]

Great Britain: 1714. A rare and fascinating book containing over 200 original hand-tinted British coats of arms dating from the reign of king George 1 (1714-1727) Many of the most prominent family names in British history are represented such as Byron, Cholmondley, Cornwallis, Windsor, Walpole, Hamilton and Somerset among others. The book has no date but begins with King George's coat of arms followed by that of his son HRH George Augustus, Prince of Wales, which would place it at the early 18th century. There are 186 full page hand- tinted coats of arms, (Page size is 19cm by 12cm) Two pages are missing-187 and 188. Two pages at the end contain smaller depictions and aren't tinted. Title and any pre-title pages are missing, front leather board is detached but present, rear board partly detached and has been reinforced with tape. Corners of the boards are rubbed and have the expected wear of a 300 year old book. .Backstrip has five raised bands and an impressed number 2, which suggests this is part of a set. Edges and pastedowns/feps are tanned. Owners ex-libris sticker with own coat of arms is on front cover pastedown. Sporadic foxing throughout, but most of the pages and illustrations are fairly clean, some pages have a small pencil tick to top right hand corner. A wonderful and rare volume.

Alexander Pope
1714. Condition: Very Good. SIGNED BINDING by Lloyd and Wallis. Slim 12mo, late 19th century full navy crushed morocco gilt, raised bands, gilt dentelles, marbled endpapers, all edges gilt. First complete edition and first separate publication of Pope's mock-heroic masterpiece; the 1st edition to contain all five cantos of the poem. Illustrated with an engraved frontispiece and five plates, as well as a later portrait of Arabella Fermor Inserted opposite the dedication. Pope was initially inspired to compose The Rape of the Lock in order to resolve a quarrel that arose between the Fermor and Petre families after Robert lord Petre snipped a lock of Arabella Fermor's hair. Hoping to ease the animosity between the two families through playful humor, Pope, with Arabella Fermor's permission, first published The Rape of the Lock in two cantos in Lintott's "Miscellaneous Poems and Translations" in 1712. Pope's genius, however, is fully displayed in the five-canto version of the poem in which he expands the sketch to include divine machinery, albeit on the miniature scale of sylphs and gnomes. "One of Pope's most brilliant performances, it has also been one of his most popular" (DFrabble, 810). Rothschils170. Bookplates. Early owner inscription, dated 1766, and a few other small ink marks on washed title page. A lovely copy, beautifully bound in full morocco by Lloyd and Wallis. Photos available upon request. British Elections]
[London, 1714. Broadsheet, 15 3/4 x 12 1/4 inches. [1]p. Printed docket title on verso. Dbd. Early folds and early stab holes in left margin. Small portion of inner margin excised, with no loss to text. Very light foxing and offsetting. Very good. A rare and interesting British political petition relating to the right of burgesses to serve in Parliament for St. Edmundsbury, Suffolk. The document traces the political structure and representation of St. Edmundsbury from ancient times through the establishment of the town as a free borough by King Richard II, its charter that soon followed, and a controversy over rights to electing members of Parliament beginning in 1680. The petitioners write that the controversy is based on the question of "In whom the right of Election Resides, whether in the Freemen and Inhabitants of the said Town...or in the Alderman, Capital Burgesses, and Burgesses of the Common- Council." Parliament would decide upon the latter in a resolution passed April 27, 1714, . An interesting look at issues of direct representation closely preceding the major changes in British government of 1714 and 1715, and an early example of lobbying literature. ESTC records three copies, at the British Library, Oxford, and the National Library of Wales. HANSON 1966.
