[London. 1714].. Broadsheet, 14 x 9 inches. [1]p. plus printed docket title on verso. Dbd. Early folds; early stab holes in left margin. Small portion of inner margin excised, with no loss to text. Some foxing and light offsetting. Very good. An early and interesting petition proposing a new set of rules for clothing merchants buying cloth on credit. It is among the first examples of commercial lobbying literature, which first began proliferating during the major changes in British government in the mid- 1710s. ESTC lists copies at four locations in the United Kingdom and four in the United States, at the California State Library, Columbia, Harvard, and Johns Hopkins. HANSON 1966.

An exceptionally fine and complete copy with both the portraits which often lack, from the collection of Robert Honeyman. "Bernoulli published only one book, <i>Théorie de la manoeuvre des vaisseaux</i> (1714) and apart from this, his dissertation <i>De motu musculorum</i> (1694) and one or two minor pieces, all his work was contributed to journals (189 papers are collected here) or were first published in these volumes, i.e. 59 of his lectures and the <i>Hydraulica</i> in volume IV [appearing here for the first time in print], which was written in competition with his son Daniel." (Roger Gaskell). <br/><br/> ❧Honeyman 293 (this copy, sold for $1,500 in 1978); Norman 217; Stanitz 55; Arnoud de Vitry 55.<br/><br/> "The first volume is primarily devoted to problems in geometry and the early calculus, but also contains papers on muscular mechanics, the resistance of solids, and a geometrical demonstration of the motion of pendulums and projectiles in resisting and unresisting media. Volumes two and three are almost totally devoted to problems of mechanics, the first of these containing his theoretical essay on the maneuvering of vessels and related papers, as well as numerous contributions on the analysis of trajectories. His discourse on the laws governing the communication of movement opens volume three, which also contains his essay on celestial mechanics. The last volume contains contributions on the curvature of elastic plates, his mechanico-dynamical propositions, and problems in dynamics. Most important, its appearance in this volume represents the first printing of t … [Click Below for Full Description]

The work (revised in 1719 under the amended title 'A Compleat History of the Lives and Robberies Of the most Notorious Highway-Men...') is known in Morphew and Dodd's two volume first edition of 1714; reprinted the same year. Thomas Hunter
FONT>7 by 4, 143pp, 1714 Book. Very Good. Hardcover. First edition. A scarce work written by Father Thomas Hunter in response to an essay by Hugh Tootel published anonymously a year previously. First Edition. Hugh Tootell (1671/1672 - 1743) was an English Catholic historian. He is commonly known under his pseudonym Charles Dodd. he is said to have witnessed the siege of Douay (1712) as chaplain to an English regiment; certainly he wrote in that character a short History of the English College at Douay (1713) which purported to be by a Protestant chaplain. As it attacked the Jesuits, Father Thomas Hunter published his Modest Defence (1714), to which Dodd replied in The Secret Policy of the English Society of Jesus (1715). Condition: Originally bound inroan, of which only some remains. Externally worn, missing most of the leather. Joints starting, front hinge strained. Internally, firmly bound, though binding is split in places. Damp staining and heat damage with somemould throughout. Loss to front blanks and title page, possibly from previous worming. [LONGITUDE] GREAT BRITAIN: PARLIAMENT
London: John Baskett, 1714. Folio, with 4 pp. table; bound with 22 other parliamentary acts for the session in contemporary plain calf, brown label, slightly rubbed, in very good condition. The longitude reward announced. The important first publication of the Longitude Act: 'nothing is so much wanted and desired at Sea, as the Discovery of the Longitude'. The act - more often seen in disbound form - is here in its appropriate context in the full printing of the twenty-three Acts of the first session of parliament in 1714. Other acts in the session are of some interest: for example one act removes the "ad valorem" tax on imported books and prints, another is for "Encouraging the Tobacco-Trade",The discovery of an accurate method of measuring longitude was recognised as fundamental to the naval expansion of Britain, especially after disasters such as the loss of Admiral Shovell's squadron on the Isles of Scilly in 1707. The Act was promulgated in July 1714 and is here published by the then Queen's printer John Baskett, as 'An act for providing a publick reward for such person or persons as shall discover the longitude at sea' (pp. [353]-357). This led to the formation of the Commissioners for the Discovery of the Longitude at Sea, otherwise known as the Board of Longitude. One of the first known examples of a government-sponsored award to stimulate scientific research, the board was given the authority to award a first prize of £20,000 to any person who submitted a proposal capable of measuring longitude within half a degree of a great circle, as well as lesser awards and sm … [Click Below for Full Description]

Volckamer, Johann
Nuremburg. A rare double-size folding plate of a pineapple from Volckamer's work on exotic citrus fruit, published from 1708 to 1714. Tab III is one of 4 double-size plates of pineapples, the golden orange pineapple depicted in the center of the print springing full grown from it's foliage, with a tropical scene at the bottom margin, including a group of two natives, one carrying a large water jug on his head. A slightly less exuberant depiction than its companion prints. Copper engraving with later hand color, 9 3/16 x 14 5/16" with large borders. Jos. A Montalegre, fecit. Margin added lower left. Volckamer's elegant prints of then-exotic citrus are pictured in a large scale, seeming to "float" in the skies above landscape scenes below. The locations are purported to be in Nuremberg and northern Italy, but some are strikingly tropical in aspect. Dunthorne # 323. [Attributes: First Edition]
