Lapide, Cornelius a [Cornelissen van den Steen]:
Antwerpen, Verdussen / Köln, Metternich 1714ff. / 1744. - Zusammen einige tausend Seiten. [Click Below for Full Description]

. Amsterdam, R. and G. Wetstein, J. Oosterwyk and H. van de Gaete, 1714. Folio (33.3 x 21.1 cm). Allegorical frontispiece (by Picart, dated 1711), title page (in red and black ink), engraved portrait of de Bruyn (by G. Spine with six raised bands, title written in ink, in a neat contemporary hand.* First edition, second issue of one of the most richly illustrated voyages through Russia, Persia and adjacent countries and territories. This voyage was made by the Dutch painter Cornelis de Bruin (as on title page), or de Bruyn (as in the portrait) (1652-1727). He went by sea from Amsterdam along the coast of Norway to Archangel above the polar circle, and travelled by river and overland southwards through Russia and the Caspian Sea, from there over land to Persia, the Gulf and by ship again onward to Batavia (now Jakarta), back to Persia, and across the Mediterranean homewards. It is an extensive work important to naval and travel history, and includes beautiful large panoramic views of, for instance, Archangel, Moscow, and "Spahan" (= Isfahan), some are impressively long when unfolded. Most are as stated in the title, from drawings made on the spot by de Bruin himself. The work was dedicated to Anton Ulrich, Duke of Brunswyk and Lunenburg. This edition is identical to the 1711 edition published for the author by Willem and David Goerree. Two book plates … [Click Below for Full Description]

Bisaillon, Peter:
New York & Philadelphia, 1714. [3]pp. Folio. Old fold lines. Light wear and soiling, earliest document more heavily so. Good plus. Three significant early manuscript documents relating to French Canadian trapper and Indian trader and interpreter Peter Bisaillon and his trading activities in North America, including an official license from the Province of Pennsylvania. Bisaillon (1662-1742) - whose name appears in the documents spelled variously Besallion, Bizaillon, and Beselion - came to Canada with his four brothers in the late 17th century. He was part of Henri Tonti's expedition down the Mississippi that went in search of La Salle in 1686. Two or three years later he moved to Pennsylvania, where he engaged in business with Jacques Le Tort as an employee of Dr. Daniel Coxe near present-day Spring City. Coxe ceased business in 1692, but Bisaillon and his associates continued to trade in the wilds of Pennsylvania and the western provinces, maintaining ties with various Indian tribes and Canadian trappers. Jealousy and competition within the fur trade and between the colonies were fierce, and Bisaillon frequently ran into trouble when his competitors' patrons were in power. In 1712, Bisaillon finally found some measure of security in the patronage and employ of James Logan, the secretary of the province, who was consolidating control over both political power and the Indian trade. This endeavor would eventually help precipitate the French and Indian War, as Pennsylvania challenged France for control over the trade in the Ohio country. The first document chronologic … [Click Below for Full Description]

Swift, Jonathan
London: Printed for John Morphew, 1714. First edition, first issue. [2], 45 pp. 1 vols. 4to. The scarce first issue of one of Swift's most effective political pamphlets, written on behalf of the government against Steele's The Crisis. Swift's aspersions on the Scottish peers made the Lords seek special means to suppress his work, and it was reprinted with the offending passages removed. His remarks here make it clear why the suppression was sought: in reply to Steele's note that the Kingdom of Scotland had many nobles, Swift chips in: "They had indeed; and to that we owe one of the great and necessary Evils of the Union upon the Foot it now stands. Their Nobility is indeed so numerous, that the whole Revenues of their Country would be hardly able to maintain them according to the Dignity of their Titles; and what is infinitely worse, they are never likely to be Extinct till the last Period of all Things ... I could Point out some with great Titles, who affected to appear very vigorous for Dissolving the Union, though their whole Revenues before that Period would have ill maintained a Welch Justice of the Peace; and have since gathered more Money than ever any Scotchmen, who had not travell'd, could form an Idea of." Very scarce on the market. Teerink 596; Rothschild 2054. Modern marbled boards. Title somewhat spotted and with wormhole through first few leaves, slight waterstaining in blank margins to text; otherwise very good.

PIGEON, Jean and Gilles LE ROY.
De La Lande, p. 361; Cat. Weil 25, no. 167 (lacking 1 moveable plate); cf. Houzeau-Lancaster 7531 (Premontval's biography). First and only edition of descriptions and illustrations of 4 ingenious and unusual astronomical instruments, all designed and operating according to the Copernican system. The first is one of the earliest examples of a clockwork model of the Copernican solar system. Pigeon notes that the terrestrial globe in the complete planetary system is too small to conveniently demonstrate the earth's movements, so he also built a separate larger one, described and illustrated in the next part of the book. Next comes Pigeon's planisphere, not merely illustrated but included in the book in working form, with a turning dial. It is designed to calculate the distances of the various planets. Finally a second working instrument is included: an orthographic equatorial projection of the globe with a movable pointer to indicate the position of the sun. In very good condition. The hinges are cracked and there is minor damage to the spine and the surface of the leather, but the binding remains structurally good.

AA, Pieter van der.
1714 - Leiden, c.1714. Original colour. Map within separately-printed frame-like border, total printed area 220 x 290mm. Martin Frobisher's map of his route across the North Atlantic to Greenland in 1576, with the straits he discovered there. However it is based on his belief in the existance of the mythical island of 'Frisland', causing him to mistake Greenland for his true location on Baffin Island in Canada. Frobisher (1535-94) intended to find the the North West Passage: he landed on Greenland but thought it to be the non-existent Frisland shown on his charts. When he sailed on and touched land again he believed he had arrived in Greenland when in fact he was at what is now Frobisher Bay on Baffin Island in the Canadian Arctic. Entering the bay he believed he had discovered a strait on Greenland, and even two more voyages (1577 & 1578) did nothing to make him doubt himself. Two more voyages (1577 & 1578) did nothing to make him doubt himself. Over a century later this map still shows Frobisher's Strait on Greenland, although Frisland had been consigned to history.
