FULLER, Thomas.
Second edition in English of a popular pharmacopoeia, based on the fifth Latin edition of 1714. According to the introduction, the author had originally compiled "a very great Collection of the best, and neatest Medicines" for personal use, constantly testing and amending the recipes and sharing the manuscript with others. "Now it so chanced, that a certain young Gentleman, a Batchelor in Physick, having gotten one of these, and carrying it into Holland, died and left it there. This unlucky Accident gave me great Uneasiness; for I knew not into what Hands it might fall; and perhaps the Dutch might print it upon me rough as it was, and unprepared for the Press" (A3v). Fuller made a selection from his notes, from which the first Latin Pharmacopoeia extemporanea was published in 1701. Fuller quickly saw several editions through the press, constantly amended, but had no intention of publishing a translation. Then he read an advertisement, announcing the publication of a translation, and he set himself to prepare and publish his own pharmacopoeia in English, which appeared in 1710. In the introduction he defended the "hard Words, and a Sort of Latin English" of the text, stating that "those that are so ignorant, and Ordinary, that they cannot apprehend what I write, should be so diffident also, as not to read it. For whatever they may think, it is assuredly one of the highest and most criminal Presumptions in the World, to thrust themselves into Physick, a Calling so honourable, so difficult, and so extremely dangerous" (A6r).Thomas Fuller (1654-1734) was an English physician an … [Click Below for Full Description]

MANGET, Jean Jacques.
[20], 452, [2]; [12], XVI, 34, [9], [1 blank] pp.A very thoroughly illustrated, systematic account of human anatomy, with 136 large engraved plates, some with a single large figure and some with many small ones. Some of the figures show microscopic views of details. The text and plates cover men, women and children, including skin, hair, muscles, bones and teeth, organs, nerves, blood vessels, respiratory system, digestive tract, reproductive system, etc. Although almost entirely devoted to human anatomy, a brief section is devoted to dogs, with an anatomical plate. The anatomical theatre on the title-pages shows a human dissection in progress, but also dead dogs on the floor. Manget's own work comprises parts 1 and 2 (in 4 books), each with its own title-page, both noting the third part by Eustachius, which also has its own title-page. It had been first published in 1714, but new plates were engraved for the present edition. Some copies include an engraved portrait of Lancisici in the Tabulae anatomicae, not included here. With some spotting and occasional, mostly marginal, stains, but still in good condition. The thoroughly illustrated ancestor of the 1858 Gray's Anatomy.l Blake, p. 285; Cole Library 1040; Heirs of Hippocrates 443; Wellcome IV, p. 43.

Balkan - Bellerive, (Jules-Alexis-Bernard)
Frankfurt, Gleditsch und Weidmann, 1714. 4 Bll., 118 S. Kl.-8°. Mod. [Click Below for Full Description]

[LONGITUDE ACT].
London: Printed by John Baskett ... And by the Assigns of Thomas Newcomb and Henry Hills, 1714. First edition. First edition, and a fine copy, of the Act of 1714 establishing a reward for the discovery of a method of determining longitude at sea. "An early example of a means adopted by a government for encouraging scientific discovery and progress" (Grolier/Horblit). John Harrison (1693-1776), among others, was so encouraged and eventually solved the longitude problem with the invention of his chronometer H4. "Harrison's chronometer not only supplied navigators with a perfect instrument for observing the true geographical position at any moment during their voyage, but also laid the foundation for the compilation of exact charts of the deep seas and the coastal waters of me world ... There has possibly been no advance of comparable importance in aids to navigation until the introduction of radar" (PMM 208). "The Act of 1714 constituted 24 Commissioners either by name or office; if five or more thought a longitude proposal promising, they could direct the Commissioners of the Navy to have their Treasurer issue up to £2000 in total to conduct trials. After experiments were made, the Commissioners of the Longitude or 'the major part of them' were to determine whether the tested proposal was 'Practicable, and to what Degree of Exactness'. The Act set up a three-tiered reward system for methods which were deemed successful" (Baker). This and the ensuing longitude acts passed between 1714 and 1828 set a precedent for government funding and, within fifty years, also gave rise to a … [Click Below for Full Description]

VIRGIL.
London: Printed for the Author, 1714. Octavo (184 x 118 mm). Contemporary unlettered vellum, smooth spine and covers ruled in gilt, marbled endpapers. Early ownership signature to initial blank and title page, contemporary correction to F5; loosely inserted letter (19th-century) presenting the book. Vellum soiled, a little closely cropped at head with occasional loss to pagination, light staining throughout, F2 loosening a little at head, short closed tear to I3. Still a very good copy in a plain vellum binding uncommon for an English book of this period. First edition of Brady's translation of book one of Virgil's Aeneid, with the original Latin and the English translation printed side by side. It was the second published 18th-century English translation of part of the Aeneid, following Joseph Addison's translation of part of the third book in 1704. Brady republished book one with books two and three in 1716, four to six in 1717, and seven to nine and ten to twelve in 1726; however, none of the later books nor the reprinting of the first book had the original Latin parallel. "The work was evidently not widely available in its day: Samuel Johnson writes: 'Dr Brady attempted in blank verse a translation of the Eneid, which, when dragged into the world, did not live long enough to cry. I have never seen it, but that such a version there is, or has been, perhaps some old catalogue informed me'" (ODNB). ESTC T50917; Foxon, B375. [Attributes: First Edition]
