Anonyme ; [ BARAT, Nicolas ]

GRABE, Joannes Ernestus.
Oxford, E Theatro Sheldoniano, J. Bowyer & H Clements, 1714. 8vo. (30),+ 375; (22),+ 256 pp. Very slight foxing, worse on the first leaves of part 1. Slightly worn contemporary full calf, spine with raised bands, red title label and red prinkled edges, boards with mirror decoaration. From the library of bishop Eric Waller (1732-1811), with its bookplate. ESTC 006385561. All published. This copy with the cancelled title leaves to both volumes also present, with the imprint: "Oxoniae, e theatro Sheldoniano, MDCCXIV. Impensis H. Clements, Londini" Greek and Latin parallel text. First published in 1698-99. Despite its title the work only covers the first two centuries of the Christian church. "Seculum III" was never printed. Johannes Ernst Grabe (1666-1711) was born in Königsberg, and began his career as a Lutheran theologist there. In the 1690s he underwent a crisis of faith, where he came to the conclusion that Luther had been wrong in his break with the Catholic church. He published his accusations in a text entitled "Dubia" in 1695. He intended to convert to the Catholic Church but under the influence of the answers he received to his "Dubia", especially by the pietist Pilipp Jacob Spener, he instead emigrated to Oxford and found his doubts answered in the English church.

Leibniz coined the term "theodicy" here to mean "justice of God" or that branch of philosophy seeking to reconcile the existence of evil with the assumption of a benevolent God. Composed as a response to Pierre Bayle's view that faith and reason are in opposition, Leibniz tries to reconcile philosophy and theology. "In the preface to the Theodicee, Leibniz declares that there are two famous labyrinths in which our reason goes astray: the one relates to the problem of liberty (which is the principal subject of the Theodicee), the other to the problem of continuity and the antimonies of the infinite" (DSB). The work was composed with the encouragement of Sophia Charlotte of Brandenburg, who wished a reply to Pierre Bayl … [Click Below for Full Description]

Stanhope, George
London: Joseph Downing, 1714. 55,[1]pp. plus two folding copper-engraved plans. Early 20th-century blue cloth, leather label. Light soiling. Internally clean, the folding plates fine. Very good. One of a series of sermons preached before the members of the Society for the Propagation of the Gospel in Foreign Parts, notable for its remarkable plates of a proposed college in Barbados. George Stanhope, Dean of Canterbury, lays forth the main purpose of the Society: "The very Being and Design of this Society tends to the more perfect Accomplishment of...converting our Traffick and Navigation, into Means of establishing the Christian Faith, among those yet barbarous People, with whom we deal abroad." The Society's missionaries focused their work on North America and the West Indies. One instrument by which the Society produced "a large Increase of Knowledge in the Natives of those very Countries" was "by settling a College in one of these Plantations, which may nurse up, and send forth, Numbers of able and faithful Ministers to assist in this Blessed Work." The college of which Stanhope speaks is Codrington College in St. James Parish, Barbados. Still in operation today, Codrington College was founded after Christopher Codrington, Barbadian-born British soldier, plantation and slave owner, bibliophile, and colonial governor, bequeathed his estates to the Society for the Propagation of the Gospel in Foreign Parts. Construction began on the college the same year as the present publication, but it was not finished until 1745 due to economic depression, droughts, and other dif … [Click Below for Full Description]
