Larmessin, Nicolas
Paris, France: Chez F. Hurand, 1714. With ornate title page... "Avec un Abrégé Historique sous chacun contenant leurs Naissances, Inclinations et Actions plus Remarquables pendant leurs Règnes"... plus 62 full-page lithograph plates. This book was originally issued with 65 portrait plates of the the Kings of France, typically from the Merovingian Dynasty through the House of Bourbon, beginning with the legendary Pharamond through Louis XIV, Louis the Great, mistakenly listed on the title page as Louis XV, and continuing to the then-present king [in name only], Louis XV. Louis XV succeeded to the throne upon the death of Louis XIV, 1 September 1715. As Louis XV was but 5 years of age at that time, a regent ruled for him until his majority. Thus although the title page bears the date 1714, the book could not have been issued until 1715, at the earliest. Of the numbered plates, numbers 1, 2 and 27 are missing. Printed by St. Seuerin [?]. Later [?] marbled paper wrappers. The wrappers are quite distressed and with creases and tears along the front, spine and back. As to the text block, some of the portrait pages are quite clean but a number are soiled, stained or foxed. 11.25 x 9.25 inches. "The Franks were originally led by dukes (military leaders) and reguli (petty kings). A timeline of Frankish rulers is difficult since the realm was, according to old Germanic practice, frequently divided among the sons of a leader upon his death and then eventually reunited." Esemplare rifilato al margine superiore, in prossimità della battuta della lastra, buona coloritura.

STEELE, RICHARD
London: Printed for J. Roberts, 1714, 1714. First edition. Rothschild 1955; NCBEL II, 1115. Binding a little rubbed; some scattered foxing; very good copy.. 8vo, contemporary panelled calf, raised bands. Frontispiece of a Papal consistory. A highly anti-Catholic work, written under the guise of a translation of an Italian account of a Papal canonization process, with prefatory remarks and running commentary by Steele, whose attitude is suggested by his characertization of the subject: "It displays the Utmost Abuse of Christianity, and that to the most Fantastical Degree." In most copies (including Rothschild's) leaf F8 is excised, as due to a printer's error it contains the same text as leaf G1; leaf F8 is present in this copy. This copy also contains a number of stubs in the early signatures, and several of these have traces of printing that make identification possible. It is evident that the printing office was in chaos.

Also with the normally canceled leaf F8 (the text repeated, with one amendment, on G1). Other stubs preceding a1, B4, B5, D1 (two stubs), and E7 suggest a degree of chaos in the printing house. Steele was prominent in the Whigs' print campaign of the later years of Anne's reign. In 1714, he published his incendiary 'seasonable remarks on the danger of a Popish successor' in The Crisis. The pamphlet led to his expulsion from the House of Commons, leaving Steele with more time to write. This volume, published later in the year, continues with his anti-Catholic campaign, and is 'design'd to expose the prophanation of true religion by the artifices of the church of Rome'. The main text purports to be a translation fr … [Click Below for Full Description]
