WAGSTAFFE, William]
London: John Morphew, 1714. 8vo., in half sheets, 46pp., including the half-title, light waterstain in gutter of a few leaves, recently bound in cloth-backed marbled boards with gilt green morocco label on upper board. A very good copy. First edition. A curious essay by an unlikely author. William Wagstaffe (1683-1725), a physician and satirist, was really a medical man (Doctor of Medicine at Oxford in 1714; Fellow of the Royal College of Physicians, 1718; F.R.S. 1718; a reader in anatomy to the barber-surgeons from 1715 and, finally, from 1720 to be the elected physician to St. Bartholomew's Hospital). A serious review of Britain's taxation regime and its effects on the county as a whole and merchants on the other, as this essay attempts, seems an unnatural excursion from Wagstaffe's usual areas of expertise. Nonetheless, the essay is not without merit. He talks intelligently, for example, about the 'decay of trade, and the ruin of the merchants' brought about, he suggests by their usual backers investing instead in the stock market. 'For it is natural to suppose', he writes, 'that any man would sooner employ his fortune, where he could make twenty or thirty per cent. of it with safety, than expose it to the dangers of the sea, or the vigilance of privateers. From hence it is we may date the ruine of our trade; for by these means our merchants left their correspondents by degrees to other nations, who took hold of the advantage, till at length we lost them entirely, and instead of the most flourishing trading nation in the world, our trade was in money; we were become inco … [Click Below for Full Description]

[Click Below for Full Description]

Nicolson, W[illiam]
London: Timothy Childe; Robert Knaplock, 1714. Second edition completely revised and greatly expanded. Hardcover. g+ to vg. Folio (14 1/2 x 9 1/2"). xviii, 272pp. Modern full morocco retaining parts of the original gilt-stamped covers, with gold lettering and tooling to spine. Marbled endpapers. Originally published in three parts between 1696 and 1699, this 1714 edition of William Nicolson's "English Historical Library" has been corrected and augmented. Divided into three parts, Book I deals with topographical and geographical matters; Book II with ecclesiastical history, and the third contains a description of the contents and locations of public records. The general goal of this work was the search for true, impartial and disinterested history. Nicolson insisted on the need for 'a general Examen, a sort of an Universal Index Expurgatorius, that points at the mistakes and errors of every page of our several historians.' The intention of the work was to identify and separate the 'good sterling history' from the chaff of 'romance or Buffoonry' (from the author's preface). Minor water-staining at lower fore-edge of the first 60 pages (never affecting lettering). Binding in very good, interior in good+ to very good condition.

BATTERSBY, John
London: printed for John Pemberton, 1714. 4to., (4) + 58pp., last two leaves rather soiled, but a large, crisp, copy recently bound in marbled boards, spine lettered. First edition. An interesting account of the devilish conversion tactics used by Roman Catholic priests, as well as by laymen and laywomen, to effect conversions to Rome. Their most potent weapon was the single-minded training supplied by Roman Catholic seminaries and missionary colleges in Europe - including the English College in Rome, the monastery of English Benedictine monks in Paris, the College of English seculars in Lisbon, the College of English Jesuits at St. Omer, the various colleges at Doway, and another at Lamspring in Germany. 'To promote this great business of perverting these nations to Popery, there are such maxims infus'd into every part of the body, into women as well as men, layety as well as clergy, that this zeal of making proselites spreads to every member of the Romish communion'. London: Printed [for Edmund Curll], 1714, 1714. First edition. NCBEL II, 987; Straus, The Unspeakable Curll, page 227; ESTC T65369. Fine copy.. 8vo, recent brown calf period style by Philip Dusel, red morocco label, gilt rules, decorations and lettering. Frontis. Additional leaf with a printed key to the characters from Curll's later editions bound in at the end. The fictionalized memoirs of novelist, playwright and journalist Delarivier Manley (c.1670-1724). The story, written under the guise of a translation and in part a roman à clef about contemporary characters, scandals and affairs, is told in a conversation between two gentleman who discuss the life of Rivella, though she is not present. This mask of translation was a means for Manley to sing the praises of her own charms and to defend her reputation, which had come under attack because, as the narrator notes, "what is not a Crime in Men is scandalous and unpardonable in Woman, as she herself has very well observ'd in divers Places, throughout her own Writings." Rivella went through several editions, but Manley's name was not attached to it until after her death, at which time the publisher Curll also printed a key to the characters.

(Longitude Act)
London: J. Baskett, Assigns of T. Newcomb, H. Hills, 1714. First edition. [ii], 355-357, [1] pp. 4to. Contemporary blind-stamped reverse calf, red morocco spine label. Wear to lower corner of front board, some sporadic toning and foxing to text. First edition. [ii], 355-357, [1] pp. 4to. "Nothing is so much wanted and desired at Sea, than the Discovery of the Longitude" The first publication of the Longitude Act, which encouraged the discovery of a method of quickly and accurately determining a ship's longitude. "An early example of a means adopted by a government for encouraging scientific discovery and progress" (Grolier / Horblitt). The Act established the Longitude Board, tasked with evaluating proposals for measuring longitude and awarding prizes. The top prize of £20,000 was reserved for any method that could measure longitude within one half of a degree. Subsequent Longitude Acts - there was a series of such acts throughout the 18th century - added various other incentives. The problem of accurately determining longitude had confounded navigators and scientists for centuries. The common method of calculating longitude by dead reckoning relied on estimates of speed and direction and was therefore subject to cumulative errors. The need to more accurately determine longitude was brought to the fore by the Scilly naval disaster of 1707, in which four British warships and some 1500 men were lost off the Isles of Scilly after losing their bearings during a storm. The Navigation Act lead to the development of the lunar distance method in 1763 by Nevil Maskelyne and the inve … [Click Below for Full Description]

[Attributes: Hard Cover]
