[Rycaut, Paul].
1714. 12mo. 498, (6) pp. Title page printed in red and black. With separate engr. title page (counted in the pagination), engr. title vignette, 18 folding engr. plates and one engraving in the text. Contemp. full morocco, covers and spine gilt with giltstamped green spine label. Leading edges gilt, gilt inner dentelle, marbled endpapers. All edges gilt. Beautiful French edition of Sir Paul Rycaut's famous Turkish chronicle: a page-for-page reprint of the - probably pirated - third edition in French, which had appeared at Amsterdam (under the imprint of Abraham Wolfgangk) in 1670. The 1714 edition, not noted in the relevant bibliographies, omits Rycaut's name, citing only that of the translator, but without the words "traduit de l'Anglois", thus falsely suggesting that the translator Briot is the author. "This work is regarded as one of the best of its kind with respect to the religious and military state of Turkey" (Cox). "[Rycaut's] most important work [...] presents an animated and, on the whole, faithful picture of Turkish manners" (DNB). "Provides an account of the society and political system of the Ottoman Empire with unprecedented thoroughness" (cf. Osterhammel, Die Entzauberung Asiens, 32). "An extremely important and influential work, which provides the fullest account of Ottoman affairs during the 17th century [...] Rycaut was appointed consul in Smyrna, where he resided for eleven years. His information on the Ottoman Empire was taken from several sources: original records, and from a Polish resident of some nineteen years at the Ottoman court" (Blackmer). [BOTANICAL] Li Shizhen, revised by Ino^ Jakusui
(1714). [BOTANICAL] Li Shizhen, revised by Ino Jakusui. Shinkosei HONZO KOMOKU. Kyoto & Edo. Shotoku 4 [1714]. Ohon size, 26.8 x 17.7 cm. Ino [1655-1715], an important traditional doctor, revised and enlarged Li Shizhen [1518- 93]'s seminal work of materia medica, which had been imported into Japan through Nagasaki in the early 17th century. Hayashi Ranzan [1583-1657] procured a copy of the Chinese edition in Nagasaki in 1607 and presented it to the Bakufu, which undertook a variety of state sponsorship of herbal medicine, planting two herb gardens near Edo, one in Ushigome and one in Shinagawa. There had been at least one Japanese printing of the original Chinese work in the mid 17th century but the edition at hand, the revised and enlarged Japanese edition of this important work, is the definitive version, undertaken by Ino Jakusui [1655-1715]. The HONZO KOMOKU would go through several subsequent Japanese editions and there is at least one exhaustive version done in modern Japanese in the 20th century, as well. Our copy is complete. There are 52 volumes, bound in 37, then another 12 supplementary volumes bound in 8, for a total of 64 volumes bound in 45. Of the 45 bound up volumes, four are illustrated in b+w woodcut. The printings throughout are good or better. Most volumes have their original worn title labels. There is very little internal soiling, but some worming throughout. Very unusual in any state, even more so in this good condition throughout., Good

Parigi, Le Hay, Duchange, 1714. - Parigi, Collombat, 1715. [Click Below for Full Description]

Lawrence, John.
Printed for Bernard Lintot, London, 1714. 0 engraved title; xiv, 83, [1] pages; Engraved additional title. Later cloth-backed marbled paper boards. Provenance: John Turton (early signature) ; from the Eleanor Squire Library at the Cleveland Garden Center, bookplate, no library markings. Rare first edition of the "first original eighteenth-century English treatise on gardening" (Henrey. ) Laurence was rector of Yelvertoft in Northamptonshire from 1700 to 1721, and this series of works is based firmly on his own achievements in reclaimimg the rectory garden "of about 32 Yards square, mounded round with low Mud-Walls, quite over-run with Couch or Twitch-grass, Nettles and Goose-berry Bushes; and, which was a great deal worse, upon a wet white Clay, lying within a Foot of the Surface." The work in essence tells the story of the author's victory over this hostile environment in the form of practical advice on all aspects of the cultivation of fruit trees. First published in 1714, subsequent editions and continuations appeared in the ensuing years. Henrey III: 933 . Measurements 5" x 7.75". [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]
